Connect the controller before opening the demo, enable the matching controller support in Steam, then open the demo’s per-game layout from the Library. Demos with native Steam Input support use developer-defined actions and action sets; demos without it require a legacy layout that translates controller inputs into keyboard, mouse, or XInput events.
The key limitation is compatibility: a remapped gamepad cannot add gamepad support to a demo that accepts only keyboard and mouse input. In that case, map the controller to keyboard and mouse controls or use the demo’s own control settings.
What Steam controller remapping changes
Steam Input sits between your physical controller and a game or demo. It can pass through gamepad signals, assign controls to actions exposed by the developer, or emulate keyboard, mouse, and XInput-style inputs for software that does not understand Steam Input directly.
Steam’s player guide supports configuration options for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and generic controllers. In 2020, roughly a quarter of all controller sessions on Steam used Steam Input, including nearly half of PlayStation-controller sessions. Valve has also reported that more than 2,000 Steam games used gamepad emulation for at least one controller type. Those figures describe Steam-wide usage, not a guarantee that a particular demo supports every controller or mapping style.

Before you start
- Connect the controller to the computer. For wireless hardware, charge it and pair it with the operating system first.
- Close external remapping utilities unless you specifically need one. A utility can make Steam see an emulated Xbox 360 controller instead of the original PlayStation device.
- Install the demo in your Steam Library and launch it once if possible. Check its own controls menu so you know whether it supports a gamepad or only keyboard and mouse.
- Keep the Steam desktop client available for editing. Big Picture mode has a separate but equivalent configuration path.
Enable controller support in Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Choose Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Under the controller options, enable the support option matching your device: PlayStation, Xbox, or generic controller support. Enable only the options you need when possible, because multiple translation layers can make device identification harder.
- Confirm that the controller appears as a detected device in the same screen. If it is absent, fix the USB, Bluetooth, pairing, battery, or operating-system problem before editing a demo layout.
Steam’s per-game editor may not appear until a compatible controller is plugged in. Valve’s player guidance states that, with the device plugged in and the correct menu showing, you should select “Edit Steam Controller Configuration…”.
Open the layout for one demo
Desktop Steam
- Open Library and locate the demo.
- Right-click the demo’s entry.
- Select Edit Steam Controller Configuration….
This layout is associated with that demo rather than automatically changing every game in your Library. If the entry is missing, return to Steam > Settings > Controller, verify that the device is detected, and reopen the demo’s context menu.
Big Picture mode
- Open the demo’s game menu.
- Choose Manage Game.
- Select Controller Configuration.
The labels can look different from the desktop client, but the layout concepts are the same: action sets for native Steam Input titles and templates or direct bindings for legacy emulation.

| What the demo supports | What you see in Steam | Best mapping approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Steam Input API | Developer-defined actions and one or more action sets | Assign physical controls to named actions | Each action set is independent; menu and gameplay bindings may differ |
| Gamepad support without native Steam Input actions | A controller or gamepad layout can be selected | Use a gamepad-oriented template or direct buttons and axes | The demo must actually accept gamepad input |
| Keyboard-and-mouse only | No useful native gamepad actions; legacy options are available | Map buttons and sticks to keyboard keys, mouse buttons, and mouse movement | A gamepad-only template will not create missing gamepad support |
| Specialized DirectInput device, such as a flight stick or racing wheel | Device may be detected but remapping options are unsuitable | Disable generic/DirectInput remapping where recommended by Steamworks | Steam does not support remapping these devices through the standard controller system |
When the demo does not clearly advertise its input model, test its own controls menu. A layout that works in Steam’s controller screen can still fail if the demo ignores the type of signal Steam sends.

Remap a demo with native Steam Input support
Native Steam Input support means the developer supplied action names rather than asking you to bind directly to raw keyboard keys or controller buttons. The names may describe movement, camera control, jump, confirm, pause, or other functions. Use those actions instead of guessing which physical button the developer intended.
- Open the demo’s controller configuration screen.
- Choose the action set shown for the current context, such as gameplay or menu controls.
- Select a controller region or input area, such as the face buttons, left stick, right stick, triggers, bumpers, D-pad, or menu buttons.
- Choose the developer-defined action you want that physical input to perform.
- Repeat the process for the controls you need. Leave unused controls unassigned rather than creating conflicting bindings.
- Save or apply the layout, then launch the demo and test movement, camera, interaction, pause, and menu navigation separately.
Understand action sets
Action sets are separate collections of bindings for different screens or modes. A demo may use one set during gameplay and another in menus. Changing a binding in the menu set does not automatically change the gameplay set, and vice versa.
If buttons work in menus but not during play, reopen the configuration editor and select the gameplay action set. If gameplay works but the pause or inventory screen does not, edit the menu set. Some demos switch sets automatically; others expose a manual control or rely on the developer’s implementation.

For a demo with no named Steam Input actions, select a legacy template or create legacy bindings. The editor can translate a physical controller input into a keyboard key, mouse button, mouse movement, or XInput-style gamepad event.

- Open Edit Steam Controller Configuration… or Controller Configuration in Big Picture mode.
- Choose a legacy template that matches the demo’s input style. A keyboard-and-mouse template is the appropriate starting point for a demo that does not recognize gamepads.
- Select an input region, such as a stick, trigger, button, or D-pad direction.
- Assign the key, mouse action, or XInput-style button that the demo expects. For example, map movement directions to the same keyboard keys the demo lists in its controls menu.
- Use mouse-region or mouse-like bindings for camera control when the demo expects pointer movement. A button press alone cannot substitute for continuous camera movement.
- Save or apply the layout and test one function at a time in the demo.
Use multi-button bindings and activators carefully
Steam’s legacy editor supports multi-button bindings and activators. A multi-button binding can require more than one physical input, while an activator can change what an input does depending on how it is pressed or held. These features are useful for secondary actions when the controller has fewer buttons than the keyboard layout, but they can also create accidental repeats or conflicts.
- Give the primary action a simple press before adding hold, double-press, or chord behavior.
- Reserve a modifier button for functions that are rarely needed simultaneously with movement.
- Test short press, long press, release, and repeated input separately.
- Remove an activator if the demo already interprets held keys or repeated mouse clicks on its own.
Save, apply, and test the layout
Saving the layout does not prove that the demo accepts the resulting signal. Test from inside the demo, ideally in its title screen and a controllable section.
- Apply the layout in Steam’s configuration screen.
- Launch the demo without closing Steam’s controller service.
- Test menu navigation, confirmation, cancellation, movement, camera control, primary action, secondary action, pause, and any required modifier.
- Watch for duplicate actions, such as a controller button producing both a gamepad event and a keyboard key.
- Return to the layout editor and change only one binding at a time so you can identify the cause of a failure.
If the demo has its own control options, set them to the keys or buttons you are emulating. For a keyboard-and-mouse-only demo, a gamepad-only mapping cannot provide movement or camera input because the demo has no gamepad code to receive it.

The configuration option is missing
- Plug in or pair the controller before opening the demo’s Library menu.
- Check Steam > Settings > Controller and confirm that the correct PlayStation, Xbox, or generic support option is enabled.
- Close and reopen the demo’s context menu after Steam detects the device.
- If the controller still does not appear, test the cable, USB port, Bluetooth pairing, battery, and operating-system device list.
Steam sees the wrong controller
External remappers such as DS4Windows or InputMapper can expose an emulated Xbox 360 controller while hiding or replacing the original PlayStation device. Decide which layer should own the translation. For a Steam Input layout, close the external remapper and let Steam detect the physical controller directly, then recheck the enabled support option.

Buttons work in menus but not during gameplay
The demo is probably using separate action sets. Edit the gameplay set rather than the menu set, apply the layout, and test again. If the demo changes sets only after a particular screen or mode loads, test the binding in that exact context.
A gamepad-only template does nothing
Steam Support states that “Gamepad-only input styles will only work with gamepad supported games.” Select a keyboard-and-mouse legacy layout and bind the controller to the keys and mouse actions listed by the demo. If the demo requires simultaneous keyboard and mouse input, assign those inputs to separate controller controls or use a modifier.
Movement works but the camera does not
Movement may be mapped to keyboard keys while the camera expects mouse motion. Reassign the right stick or another control to a mouse region or mouse-movement binding. A single mouse-button click will not replace continuous camera movement.
Inputs repeat, lag, or trigger twice
- Look for duplicate bindings in both a native action set and a legacy layer.
- Remove unnecessary activators and test a plain press.
- Check whether an external remapper is sending a second virtual controller.
- Use one translation layer at a time whenever possible.
A flight stick or racing wheel is not remappable
Steamworks recommends disabling generic or DirectInput remapping for specialized devices such as flight sticks and racing wheels because Steam does not support remapping those devices through the standard controller system. Use the demo’s native device settings or the device’s supported configuration software instead.

How to compare two demos before building layouts
Two demos can behave differently even when they are distributed through the same Steam client. Compare them on four practical axes:
- Native Steam Input actions: named actions and action sets generally provide clearer, context-specific bindings than raw emulation.
- Gamepad support: a demo that accepts a gamepad can use gamepad or XInput-style mappings; a keyboard-and-mouse-only demo needs emulation.
- Action-set design: separate menu and gameplay sets require separate edits and tests.
- Controller detection path: direct recognition is easier to troubleshoot than a device presented through an external remapper.
Record the result for each demo in a small checklist: controller detected, configuration command visible, native actions available, gamepad accepted, menu set present, gameplay set present, and keyboard/mouse fallback required. This avoids assuming that a layout that works in one demo will work in another.
Choosing a controller for demos
If you do not already have a recognized controller, an XInput-compatible USB game controller is the simplest starting point for demos that advertise gamepad support. Steam’s official guidance also covers PlayStation and generic controller options, but recognition, button labels, wireless behavior, and operating-system compatibility vary by model. Confirm those details for the exact controller before buying; Steam Input cannot make an unsupported operating-system device appear.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A controller is not a solution for every demo. If the title is keyboard-and-mouse-only, choose hardware with enough buttons for the required keys and a stick or touch surface that can provide mouse movement, or use the keyboard and mouse directly.
Quick Recap
Practical layout checklist
- Controller connected and visible in Steam’s Controller settings.
- Correct PlayStation, Xbox, or generic support option enabled.
- Demo-specific configuration opened from the Library.
- Native action set selected when the demo provides named actions.
- Correct action set edited for both gameplay and menus.
- Legacy keyboard, mouse, or XInput bindings used when native actions are unavailable.
- Gamepad-only templates avoided for keyboard-and-mouse-only demos.
- External remappers removed or deliberately configured so only one virtual controller is active.
- Specialized DirectInput remapping disabled for flight sticks and racing wheels where Steamworks advises it.
- Layout applied and tested in the demo, not only in Steam’s editor.
