You can use systemd to run a long-lived FFmpeg process and restart it after an unclean exit, but systemd alone cannot confirm that YouTube is receiving valid moving video and audio. The reliable workflow is to validate the encoder first, run it as a restricted service, and check both its status and YouTube Live Control Room. The exact encoder command and unit depend on whether you are streaming a file, camera, desktop, or incoming relay, and on the Ubuntu, FFmpeg, and systemd versions in use.

Choose the source and encoder before creating a service

This guide is for a persistent encoder process managed by systemd. It does not provide a universal FFmpeg command: file playback, a live camera, desktop capture, and an incoming relay need different inputs and may require different codecs or device configuration. No end-to-end FFmpeg command or unit file has been validated for a particular Ubuntu release here, so test your actual command on the target machine before putting it into a unit.

  • Video file or playlist: A headless FFmpeg process can read local media and send it to YouTube. Confirm that the source does not run out and that looping behavior is intentional.
  • Camera: Identify and test the capture device, its format, and audio input independently. A camera is not required for prerecorded-file streaming.
  • Desktop capture: A desktop encoder has display-server and graphics requirements. OBS on Linux requires an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland; meeting those baseline requirements does not guarantee adequate encoding performance. See the OBS Project system requirements.
  • Incoming relay: Verify that the upstream feed remains available and that FFmpeg’s input handling suits its reconnect and timeout behavior.

Check the installed versions before relying on unit directives or encoder options: use lsb_release -a (if available), ffmpeg -version, and systemd --version. Ubuntu releases can ship different systemd versions; verify directives against the local man systemd.service and man systemd.exec pages.

Confirm YouTube eligibility and prepare the stream

YouTube Help says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Requirements and Studio labels can change; check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance for the account you will use.

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and open its stream settings. The precise labels can vary as Studio changes.
  2. Choose the ingest server and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key as a password: do not paste it into screenshots, public notes, shell history, or logs.
  3. Keep the broadcast’s intended state in mind. A running encoder is only one part of the workflow; the broadcast and ingest configuration in Studio must also be valid.

Validate the encoder and network outside systemd

First run the exact encoder invocation interactively under the account and environment that will later run the service. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream, the picture moves, audio is present when expected, and the uplink can sustain the selected output. A command that starts successfully is not proof of a healthy stream.

Match the output to YouTube’s ingest guidance

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no interval longer than four seconds. Its documentation covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for the stated ingest guidance, and frame rates up to 60 fps. For stereo audio it lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current codec- and resolution-specific recommendations before choosing a preset.

1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published values in its encoder settings table checked in 2026, not a promise that your connection can sustain them. Allow headroom for network variation and test with representative movement and sound. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.

Keep the command explicit

Use the input and output options that match the source, and make the required output behavior explicit in the command you tested. When adapting an FFmpeg invocation for the service, use absolute executable and file paths, and specify a working directory or configuration path rather than relying on an interactive shell’s defaults. Do not assume a command copied from another Ubuntu host will work with your FFmpeg build, device names, codecs, or hardware.

Create a restricted systemd service

Run the encoder as a dedicated unprivileged service account, not as root. The unit should directly execute the validated encoder command using absolute paths. A typical long-running service needs a suitable service type, explicit input/configuration paths, and a failure restart policy with a delay. The exact unit contents must be checked on the installed systemd release, especially for credentials and newer directives.

  1. Create a dedicated account with only the file and device access the chosen source requires. Ensure the account can read the media/configuration and write any required state or logs.
  2. Place the unit in /etc/systemd/system/ with a descriptive name such as youtube-stream.service. Set User=, Group= if appropriate, and explicit WorkingDirectory= and paths.
  3. Set ExecStart= to the exact encoder executable and arguments already tested. systemd does not invoke a shell for this line by default; do not rely on shell expansions, pipes, or interactive profile setup.
  4. For a persistent encoder, configure an appropriate restart behavior such as Restart=on-failure and a sensible RestartSec=. Consult the installed systemd.service manual for the restart conditions and start-rate limits that apply.
  5. Reload unit definitions and enable/start the service using the commands below, then inspect its state and logs.
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f

Protect the stream key

Do not put the key in a world-readable unit file or an ordinary environment variable. Upstream systemd documentation warns that environment variables are not suitable for passing secrets to service processes. Where the installed systemd version supports it, use an appropriate systemd credential directive and adapt the encoder invocation to read the credential securely. Confirm the directive in that Ubuntu release’s local documentation. If credentials support is unavailable or incompatible with the encoder, use a narrowly permissioned secret file owned by the service account or root as appropriate, and ensure the key is not exposed in command-line arguments, logs, or shell history. Review access permissions and rotation procedures for whichever method you choose.

Verify the stream end to end

systemctl status reports whether systemd considers the process running; it does not prove YouTube is ingesting usable media. Check both the process and the platform:

  • Use systemctl status youtube-stream.service for the active state and recent exit details.
  • Use journalctl -u youtube-stream.service to inspect encoder errors, input failures, and restart attempts. Avoid logging the stream key.
  • Open the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that video is visible and moving, audio is present if expected, and stream-health messages show no unresolved issue.
  • Monitor the stream during operation, not just at startup. A frozen image, silent audio, or failed ingestion can occur while the process remains active.

Test recovery and know what systemd cannot fix

After a healthy test, deliberately stop or terminate the encoder in a controlled maintenance window and confirm that systemd attempts the configured restart. Then test a network interruption and restoration separately, watching both the unit logs and YouTube’s stream health. Do not use a production broadcast for disruptive tests without warning viewers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart=on-failure addresses process exits covered by the configured policy. It does not detect a process that stays alive while producing frozen or invalid output, and it cannot repair an exhausted file, invalid stream key, inadequate bandwidth, unavailable input device, or a YouTube broadcast that is no longer in a state to accept the feed. Repeated failures can also hit systemd’s start-rate limit; use the installed manual to understand the applicable limit and reset behavior. Fix the underlying cause before repeatedly restarting a failing unit.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check Next action
Unit fails immediately Executable path, arguments, file permissions, or missing interactive environment Inspect journalctl -u youtube-stream.service; run the validated command under the service account and use absolute paths.
Unit is active but Studio shows no usable stream Ingest URL/key, broadcast state, network path, or encoder output Check the Studio stream settings and health messages, then confirm the encoder is producing the expected audio/video format.
Repeated restart attempts stop Persistent process failure or systemd start-rate limiting Read the unit journal and local systemd service documentation; correct the cause before resetting or restarting.
Stream is connected but picture is frozen or audio is missing Input source, capture device, file behavior, or mapping/encoding configuration Inspect the source and encoder output, then verify moving video and sound in Live Control Room; an active service state will not catch these faults.
Stream breaks when network conditions change Uplink capacity, packet loss, or encoder reconnect behavior Test the connection under representative load and check whether the encoder can reconnect; a simple service restart may not handle an ongoing network problem.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a local capture workflow, StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a camera feed. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
