Compress each screenshot after capture and before moving it into durable storage. For a self-managed workflow, Google’s cwebp encoder is a practical starting point: use lossless encoding when exact pixels matter, and test lossy WebP on representative pages when smaller files are the priority. Do not assume one quality setting or a published format-size statistic predicts results for your screenshots.
Choose compression based on how you use the screenshots
Compression is a step between capture and archival storage. The right output depends on whether people mainly view the images, or whether later work needs the original pixels.
- Use lossless encoding when exact visual fidelity matters, such as for pixel-diffing, audit records, or future reprocessing.
- Evaluate lossy WebP when storage size is important and small visual changes are acceptable. Inspect text, thin borders, icons, and high-contrast areas; compression artifacts can affect these details.
- Keep the original until the encoded file passes your checks. Retain lossless originals or define a retention policy if exact fidelity or reprocessing may matter later.
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency. Google reports that lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNG, and lossy WebP images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality. These are general format comparisons reported by Google, not guaranteed savings for scheduled website screenshots. Google also reports an average 60–70% size saving for lossy WebP with transparency versus transparent PNG; that figure is not a screenshot-archive prediction. Google’s WebP documentation provides the comparisons and format details.
Build a safe capture-to-storage workflow
- Capture to a staging location. Do not overwrite or delete the original at this stage.
- Encode the staged image. Choose a lossless or lossy mode based on the intended use. Google’s documented starting example is
cwebp -q 80 image.png -o image.webp; quality 80 is an example, not a universal recommendation. - Validate the result. Confirm the file opens, dimensions are expected, and text and visual differences meet your requirements. Compare representative screenshots before adopting a setting across the schedule.
- Promote only validated files to durable storage. Keep the original if checks fail or fidelity requirements call for it; otherwise apply your defined retention policy.
- Record enough information to reproduce the result. Store the page URL or stable identifier, capture time, original and output formats, encoder version and settings, and any fidelity-check outcome. This is a workflow recommendation, not a metadata requirement imposed by Google.
Google documents cwebp for encoding and dwebp for decoding WebP to PNG or PPM. See the command-line encoder documentation and decoder documentation.

Automate the encoder without losing recoverability
For a simple shell step after your capture process writes image.png, run:
cwebp -q 80 image.png -o image.webp
That command creates a lossy WebP using the example quality value documented by Google. For production, choose settings by testing your own pages rather than copying that value blindly. Your job should treat a nonzero encoder exit or missing output as a failed conversion, retain the staged original, and avoid marking the screenshot as archived until validation succeeds.

To create a PNG view from a WebP file when needed, use:
dwebp image.webp -o image.png
Decoding a lossy WebP to PNG does not restore image information discarded during encoding. If exact pixels may be needed, preserve the original capture or use a lossless output.

Compare formats and settings on representative pages
Do not choose a setting from file size alone. Build a small test set that reflects your actual pages, including dense text, thin rules, icons, photos, and transparent backgrounds if those occur. Compare the results using the criteria below.
- Legibility: Can readers still distinguish small text, icons, and thin lines?
- Fidelity: Do pixel-diff, OCR, or audit workflows tolerate the changes?
- Storage: What are the actual bytes per screenshot and the projected total for your capture schedule?
- Processing: How much encoding time and CPU does your expected volume require? The cited format documentation does not establish a general CPU-cost figure.
- Compatibility: Can your viewers, diff tools, OCR jobs, archive system, and restore process read the chosen format?
- Reproducibility: Are the encoder version and settings recorded, and can you retrieve an original if a later workflow needs it?
Google’s WebP documentation describes broad browser and tool support and provides decoding tools, but verify the specific applications in your own pipeline. AVIF is also offered in some managed optimization workflows, but the available sources do not establish a current independent comparison of AVIF and WebP for text-heavy screenshots. Test it only if your encoder and downstream tools support it.

Consider managed optimization only if it fits the workflow
Managed image services can automate format negotiation or image optimization, but they are optional rather than prerequisites for compression. Imgix documents automatic compression and format negotiation, including AVIF where possible and fallback formats. Cloudflare documents image optimization through Workers and fallback behavior if AVIF encoding cannot complete quickly. These are vendor-described capabilities, not a comparative evaluation; check current commercial terms and whether a service suits your privacy, retention, access-control, and reliability requirements.
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output, but output format selection is separate from a post-capture compression policy: test the resulting files and keep originals when your fidelity needs require them. ScreenshotNeo also offers scheduled captures as part of its service. Do not assume that a hosted capture service removes the need to decide how screenshots are retained or validated.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common problems
- Text or edges look damaged: The lossy setting may be too aggressive for that page. Compare another setting or use lossless WebP; preserve the original if pixel fidelity matters.
- The output is not much smaller: Results depend on the source capture and encoding mode. Measure actual representative files rather than relying on general format statistics.
- The encoder fails or no output appears: Check that the input path exists and is readable, the output location is writable, and the encoder exits successfully. Keep the staged original and do not advance the archive step on failure.
- An archive or analysis tool cannot open WebP: Check compatibility before changing the pipeline. Use a supported output or decode WebP with
dwebpwhere appropriate; decoding a lossy image does not recover discarded details. - Visual diffs change after rollout: Confirm whether the diff pipeline expects exact source pixels. Use lossless encoding or retain the original for that workflow, and compare using the same recorded encoder settings.
