Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo compress photos for a website, first resize each image to the largest dimensions it actually needs on the page, then compare compression settings and formats on that image. Check the result visually and measure its file size: there is no single quality setting or format that works best for every photo.
Start by checking the image’s dimensions and purpose
Compression is only part of optimization. If a page displays a photo at 800 pixels wide but downloads a 3,000-pixel-wide original, the browser receives pixels the layout does not need. Resize the source to suit its largest intended display size before comparing formats or compression levels. Correct sizing can reduce waste even when you keep the same format.
- Ask whether the image is needed at all. Removing a decorative image that does not help the page may save more than compressing it.
- Check the actual rendered dimensions at common layout widths, including mobile and desktop.
- Keep enough pixels for high-density displays; do not assume the CSS width alone is the complete image requirement.
- Save an untouched source separately before resizing or applying lossy compression, so you can make a better version later.
For a page with responsive layouts, prepare a reasonable set of image sizes rather than forcing every visitor to download the largest one. The browser can select among responsive candidates suited to the device and layout. The practical goal is enough candidates to cover the layouts you serve, not a separate file for every imaginable screen width. See web.dev’s image performance guidance for responsive image delivery.
Choose a compression approach
Lossy compression for photographs
Lossy compression discards some image information to make a file smaller. It is often useful for detailed photographs, where a carefully chosen setting can reduce bytes without an obvious change at the display size. The trade-off is image accuracy: pushing compression too far can create visible artifacts.

Compare several settings for the same resized photo. Inspect faces, foliage, smooth gradients, sharp edges, and any small text or graphic detail. Look both at normal display size and at a closer view. Artifacts may show up as blockiness, halos near edges, smeared detail, or banding in gradients. web.dev recommends experimenting with compression levels to find a compromise between file size and quality in its image format guide.
Lossless compression
Lossless compression preserves the image data rather than trading away visual information. It may be the right choice when exact pixels matter, but it generally offers less opportunity to shrink a detailed photograph than a lossy setting. Compare the resulting file size instead of assuming a lossless conversion will produce a substantial reduction.
WebP and AVIF
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency. web.dev describes it as widely supported across modern browsers. Google for Developers reports that lossless WebP files are 26% smaller than PNG files and lossy WebP files are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs at equivalent quality. These are publisher-reported comparisons, not guaranteed savings for an individual image; the result depends on the source and settings. See Google’s WebP overview.

AVIF also supports lossy and lossless modes and offers additional color capabilities, but web.dev says it is not as widely supported as WebP. Choose a delivery method that fits the browsers and systems your audience uses. Depending on your setup, that can mean providing a suitable fallback or using an image service that negotiates an available format. Verify current compatibility for your own audience and workflow rather than treating format support as permanent.

| WebP | You want lossy or lossless compression, including support for transparency. | Measure the output and confirm how your delivery path handles browsers and fallbacks. |
| AVIF | Your delivery setup and audience support it, and its output suits the image. | Its support is less widespread than WebP according to web.dev; plan for that difference. |

A repeatable workflow for optimizing a photo
- Record the display need. Note where the image appears and the largest rendered size that layout requires. Include relevant mobile and desktop widths.
- Resize a copy. Create a source at the appropriate maximum dimensions. Preserve the original separately.
- Make comparison versions. Export a few lossy settings for photographic content, and try WebP or AVIF if your site can deliver them appropriately. If exact pixel data matters, test a lossless option too.
- Compare at equivalent viewing conditions. View the candidates at the size visitors will see, then inspect fine details and edges more closely. Do not judge by file size alone.
- Measure the files. Record dimensions, format, and byte size for each candidate. Choose the smallest result that still meets your visual and delivery requirements.
- Deliver responsive candidates. Where the page needs multiple display sizes, expose a modest set of suitable candidates so the browser can choose rather than downloading an oversized source for every screen.
- Check the page in its real context. Confirm the selected image loads at expected sizes, looks acceptable, and has a fallback path if your chosen format is not available in the delivery setup.
Tools named by web.dev for compression include Squoosh and ImageOptim, along with image optimization services. An image CDN can transform images and serve a format based on browser capabilities. Which route is practical depends on volume: manual tools can work for a small batch, while automation or a service can help when a site needs many images and size variants.
How to decide whether an image is optimized
There is no universal pass/fail file-size target in the cited guidance. Judge each image against its own use. A useful record for a comparison includes the source dimensions, output dimensions, format, compression setting, file size, and a visual note about any quality loss. That makes it easier to revisit a choice if the layout, audience, or delivery options change.

- Dimensions: Is the largest delivered file close to the real display need, rather than dramatically oversized?
- Visual quality: Are faces, edges, gradients, foliage, and embedded detail acceptable at normal viewing size?
- Bytes: Did the chosen settings meaningfully reduce the download compared with the original or alternative export?
- Delivery: Does the audience receive an appropriate candidate and a workable format under the site’s setup?
- Variant count: Are the additional files serving real layout needs, or creating unnecessary generation and maintenance?
web.dev says that WebP has produced greater than 50% savings compared with JPEG in some cases. Treat that as a qualified example, not a promise: individual results vary with the image, settings, and comparison conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and how to fix them
The compressed image looks blurry or has halos
The lossy setting may be too aggressive, or the source may have been resized below the display requirement. Compare a less aggressive export and recheck the dimensions. Pay particular attention to high-contrast boundaries, where compression artifacts are easy to notice.
The new file is not smaller
Compression gains vary with image content, starting format, dimensions, and settings. Try resizing first if the source is oversized; then compare a different compression mode or format. Keep the result only if it saves bytes without unacceptable quality loss.

A format does not display for some visitors
Check the target browser range and the actual delivery behavior. If a format is not supported in part of the audience or workflow, provide an appropriate fallback or use a delivery system that can select among formats based on browser capabilities. Do not assume a conversion alone handles fallback behavior.
The page still downloads a large image on mobile
Inspect the responsive image candidates and how the page selects them. A correctly compressed desktop-sized image can still be unnecessarily large for a narrow layout if the page does not offer appropriately sized alternatives.
There are too many image variants to maintain
Revisit the dimensions you actually use. Generate a reasonable set based on the layouts and device range, then measure whether each candidate has a purpose. More variants are not automatically better if the page rarely selects them.

If you need a clean screenshot of a webpage as an image rather than a compressed copy of an existing photo, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP. This creates a webpage capture; it does not replace resizing and comparing compression settings for photos. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I delete the original photo after compressing it?
Keep an untouched source if you may need to make a new crop, size, or quality trade-off later; an aggressively compressed file is a poor master copy.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I choose one quality percentage for every photo on a site?
No single percentage is established as best for all content. The visual result and file size depend on the image, so compare exports per image or use a tested workflow that evaluates the kinds of images your site serves.
