Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo compress images for the web, first resize each image to fit its actual display role, then choose a format and compression level that keeps it visually acceptable. Offer appropriately sized responsive versions, inspect them at the size visitors will see, and measure the page again. Smaller image files reduce download bytes, but the speed improvement depends on whether images are the page’s bottleneck—especially whether an image is its Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element.
What image compression can—and cannot—do
Compression reduces the bytes a browser must download. Resizing also matters: an image can be compressed efficiently and still waste bandwidth if its pixel dimensions are far larger than the displayed image. Conversely, shrinking it too aggressively can make it blurry, particularly on high-density screens. Match both file size and dimensions to the layout.
Image work can improve LCP when the image is the LCP element, but compression alone cannot guarantee a faster page. Server response time, resource priority, other assets, and delivery setup also affect the result. Use page measurements rather than assuming that a smaller file produces a particular speed gain. web.dev’s LCP guidance explains how to identify and prioritize the likely LCP resource.
Use this workflow to optimize web images
- Find the high-impact images. Review page payloads and identify large files, especially images visible near the top of the page or likely to be the LCP element. Compare each file’s bytes and intrinsic pixel dimensions with its display role.
- Resize for real layouts. Create candidates for likely display widths and high-density screens rather than serving one oversized original everywhere. Use responsive image markup or a service that generates resized derivatives. Keep the candidate set manageable and check which version browsers actually download.
- Choose a format and compression mode. Test lossy compression on photographs, where discarding some image information may substantially reduce file size. Use lossless encoding when preserving exact pixel data matters. Compare JPEG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF according to image content, required quality, and the browsers your site must support.
- Inspect visual quality. Compare each result at the size readers will see. Check lettering, logos, line art, sharp edges, and colored text on flat backgrounds closely; lossy compression and chroma subsampling can make artifacts conspicuous there. Keep the smallest version that meets the visual requirement.
- Serve suitable candidates and formats. Use responsive image selection when display sizes vary. Where you offer multiple encodings, use a
<picture>element or content negotiation. If server responses vary by the browser’sAcceptheader, web.dev advises addingVaryso shared caches distinguish the representations. - Measure the page again. Check the page waterfall and lab and field performance data. For a likely LCP image, consider a suitably high fetch priority, then verify its priority and the resulting measurements. Do not lazy-load a hero or likely LCP image by default; lazy loading is for images that are off-screen.
Choose formats and compression based on the image
| Choice | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Lossy or lossless | Test lossy compression for detailed photographs. Prefer lossless when exact pixel preservation is important. | Compare bytes and visual fidelity; inspect text, edges, and flat-color areas for artifacts. |
| JPEG or PNG | Use when they suit the asset or the audience and delivery setup call for a legacy format. | Do not assume a format wins for every image; compare the actual output. |
| WebP | Supports both lossy and lossless compression and is described by web.dev as widely supported on modern browsers. | Test the real asset and browser requirements. Google for Developers describes WebP as offering “superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web,” but that vendor statement is not a guarantee it will beat every alternative for each image. See Google’s WebP documentation. |
| AVIF | Worth testing where its output and browser support suit your audience. | In the cited web.dev guidance, AVIF support is less broad than WebP’s. Provide an appropriate fallback if required, and compare real images rather than assuming AVIF always produces a better result. |
There is no universal quality setting: the right level depends on the source, encoder, content, and acceptable appearance. Avoid treating unsourced percentage savings as a promise for your own files.

Use responsive sizes without creating needless variants
Responsive candidates let the browser select an image suited to the layout and device width instead of downloading a single unnecessarily large image. Choose widths that correspond to actual layout needs, including high-density screens, and verify in developer tools that the intended candidate is being requested. Too few sizes can waste bytes; too many add maintenance and generation overhead. A reasonable, measured set is usually easier to manage than a variant for every possible width.
Tools and hosted delivery options
web.dev’s image performance guidance names Squoosh and ImageOptim as image-compression options. Google also points to the cwebp utility for converting images to WebP; its documentation provides details and downloads for Linux, Windows, and macOS. A hosted option may automate delivery: Cloudflare documents automatic compression, responsive image transformations, modern format delivery, and lazy loading. If your goal is to capture a clean screenshot of a page—not compress the image assets that page serves—ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. For example, save this as shot.webp:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshoot common image optimization problems
- The image looks soft or blurry: Check whether you reduced its dimensions below the rendered need, including high-density display needs. Recreate a larger candidate or use a less aggressive compression setting.
- Text, logos, or edges look damaged: Lossy compression can make artifacts visible on sharp boundaries and flat fields. Try a less aggressive setting or lossless encoding, then compare the result at its display size.
- The page still feels slow after reducing image bytes: Inspect the waterfall and LCP element. Another resource or server delay may dominate; confirm the image is not being delayed by loading priority or delivery.
- The browser downloads an oversized image: Inspect the selected responsive candidate and its rendered dimensions. Adjust the candidate set or markup to better match actual layouts.
- A modern format does not display for some visitors: Confirm the audience’s browser support and provide a fallback with
<picture>or appropriate content negotiation. For negotiated representations, configureVary: Acceptso caches distinguish formats. - A cached page serves the wrong format: When the response varies by
Accept, ensure shared caches account for that header withVary; otherwise representations may not be separated correctly. - The hero image appears late: Check whether it is mistakenly lazy-loaded and inspect its resource priority. Consider an appropriate high fetch priority for the likely LCP image, then verify the effect rather than applying priority hints broadly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I compress every image on a site?
Prioritize images with large byte or pixel costs and those affecting the initial view; not every image contributes equally to the first render.
Is AVIF always smaller than WebP?
No. Results depend on the image, encoder, quality target, and browser requirements, so compare the actual outputs.
