For a standard video, YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, requires at least 640 pixels of width, and recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio. Mobile video-thumbnail uploads must be under 2 MB; desktop video-thumbnail uploads can be up to 50 MB.
Start with the correct thumbnail target
Compression cannot fix the wrong canvas. Set the aspect ratio and maximum dimensions before reducing quality.
Standard videos
- Aspect ratio: 16:9.
- Recommended resolution: 3840 × 2160 pixels.
- Minimum width: 640 pixels.
- Accepted formats: JPG and PNG.
YouTube Help says a custom thumbnail should be as large as possible because it is used as the preview image in the embedded player. The 3840 × 2160 recommendation is therefore a quality target, not a requirement to upload a file that large in every situation. If your upload device imposes a 2 MB limit, you may need to export at a smaller size or lower JPEG quality.

A reliable compression workflow
- Keep an original. Save an untouched master so you can make a new export later. Compressing an already compressed JPG repeatedly can soften text and faces.
- Crop the canvas. Use a 16:9 crop for a standard video, 9:16 for a Short, or 1:1 for a podcast playlist. Position faces, logos, and text inside the crop rather than allowing the editor to cut them off.
- Set dimensions. Start at 3840 × 2160 for a standard video when your workflow allows it. Do not export below 640 pixels wide. If the mobile limit is difficult to meet, reduce dimensions in steps such as 3840 × 2160, 2560 × 1440, 1920 × 1080, and then a smaller 16:9 size that remains at least 640 pixels wide.
- Choose a format. Export photographs and mixed images as JPG first. Use PNG when you need crisp flat graphics, transparency, or text that shows unwanted JPG artifacts.
- Export at moderate quality. Begin with a quality setting around the middle-to-high part of your editor’s range, inspect the file size, and lower quality gradually only when needed. The exact number is application-specific; the resulting byte size and preview are what matter.
- Check the actual file. Operating systems often show the size in KB or MB rounded for display. Confirm the exported file itself, not the source document, is below the applicable limit. For a mobile upload, leaving some headroom below 2 MB avoids a borderline rejection.
- Inspect at thumbnail size. Zoom out until the image is roughly the size viewers will see. Text must remain legible, faces recognizable, and high-contrast edges free of obvious blocks or halos.
- Upload from the intended device. A file accepted from a desktop may exceed the mobile video limit. Select the final export in YouTube Studio or the YouTube app and verify that the correct asset type is selected.
JPG or PNG: which export is smaller?

JPG versus PNG is a workflow decision, not a YouTube preference. Both are accepted. Keep a PNG or other lossless master if you expect to revise the design, then make a JPG delivery copy when its smaller size is useful.
How to compress it in an image editor
Crop and resize
Open the master in an editor that offers crop and export controls. Set the crop ratio to 16:9, 9:16, or 1:1 before resizing. Use a resampling option intended for reduction, apply the crop, and set the pixel dimensions. If the editor links width and height, entering 3840 and 2160 preserves the standard 16:9 canvas.
Export a JPG
Choose Export or Save for web, select JPG, and disable any setting that silently changes the crop. Start with a moderate-to-high quality value, export, and read the resulting file size. If it is over the limit, lower quality in small increments. If text becomes visibly damaged before the file is small enough, undo the quality change and reduce pixel dimensions instead.

Export a PNG
Select PNG when preserving transparency or hard-edged artwork is more important than the smallest file. Remove unnecessary metadata if your editor offers that option, then check the size. A PNG that is too large for mobile should be converted to a JPG delivery copy; do not merely rename the extension.
Automate a size target with Python
The following script uses Pillow to crop a standard-video image to 16:9, keep the width at or below 3840 pixels, and search for a JPG quality that stays below a byte target. It never reduces the width below 640 pixels. Install Pillow with python -m pip install Pillow, then run the script with a target such as 1,900,000 bytes for a mobile upload.

Review the generated image at thumbnail size; a smaller file is not useful if important lettering becomes unreadable.

When the file is still too large
- Reduce dimensions before destroying quality. A 2560 × 1440 JPG with readable text is often preferable to a heavily damaged 3840 × 2160 JPG.
- Remove unnecessary layers and metadata. Export a flattened delivery image rather than uploading an editor project file.
- Reduce visual complexity. Large photographic backgrounds, noise, film grain, and many tiny details compress less efficiently than clean areas. Simplifying a background can reduce bytes while improving readability.
- Test another format. A photographic thumbnail generally becomes smaller as a JPG; a flat graphic may remain cleaner as PNG. Compare both at the same displayed size.
- Do not chase the 50 MB ceiling. The desktop allowance is a maximum, not a target. Upload the smallest file that still looks sharp at the preview size.
Troubleshooting YouTube thumbnail rejections
“The file is too large”
Check whether you are uploading a standard video thumbnail from a mobile device. That context has an under-2-MB limit, while desktop video uploads can be up to 50 MB. Re-export as JPG, lower quality, or reduce dimensions while keeping the correct aspect ratio.
The image is rejected even though it looks small
Read the file properties and confirm the actual exported format and byte count. A file named thumbnail.jpg may still contain PNG data if its extension was changed manually. Export through the editor instead.

Undo the most aggressive quality reduction. Try a larger pixel canvas with a cleaner source, reduce photographic noise, or use PNG for flat text-heavy artwork. Always judge the result at the size viewers will see, not only at 400% zoom.

The crop cuts off a face or logo
Return to the original, set the intended ratio before resizing, and reposition the crop. Do not stretch a 16:9 image into 9:16 or 1:1; stretching distorts faces and lettering.
The thumbnail looks different on YouTube surfaces
Vertical videos can receive an automatic 4:5 presentation on Home, Explore, and subscription surfaces. Keep essential subjects away from the extreme edges and preview the asset in the relevant YouTube context when possible.
The upload works on desktop but not on a phone
That is expected when the file is between 2 MB and 50 MB. Make a mobile-safe export below 2 MB, or upload the larger file from a desktop.

Performance and quality checks before upload
- Confirm the asset type: standard video, Short, or podcast playlist.
- Confirm the ratio: 16:9, 9:16, or 1:1 as appropriate.
- Confirm width is at least 640 pixels for a standard video thumbnail.
- Confirm JPG or PNG encoding and the actual byte size.
- View the export at small size on both a light and dark surrounding background.
- Check that faces, numbers, and short title text remain recognizable without zooming.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compress the same thumbnail again after uploading it?
Keep your local master and regenerate a delivery copy instead. Re-encoding an already compressed JPG can add artifacts without giving you useful control over the final size.
Does changing .png to .jpg in the filename compress the image?
No. The filename extension does not change the encoded data. Open the image in an editor or conversion tool and export it as JPG.
Should I design at 3840 × 2160 if I always upload from a phone?
You can design at that recommended resolution, but create a separate mobile-safe export below 2 MB. The design canvas and the upload file do not have to be identical.
