To get a YouTube thumbnail under 2 MB for a mobile upload, keep the intended 16:9 crop, export a photographic design as JPG, and lower the quality a little at a time until the downloaded file is safely below the limit. If the image is still too large, reduce its dimensions before exporting. Check the file’s actual size; pixel dimensions alone do not determine whether it meets the upload limit.
YouTube Help’s 2026 guidance lists a 2 MB limit for video thumbnails uploaded on mobile and a 50 MB limit for video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails uploaded on desktop. This guide targets the stricter mobile limit so the same file is less likely to be too large when uploaded from a phone.
Check the limit and thumbnail requirements first
There are two different upload limits in YouTube Help’s current 2026 guidance:
| Upload context | Thumbnail limit | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile upload | 2 MB | YouTube Help, 2026; video thumbnails |
| Desktop upload | 50 MB | YouTube Help, 2026; video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails |
If you will upload from a phone, use the 2 MB target. For a standard video thumbnail, YouTube recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution up to 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Its guidance says, “Your custom thumbnail image should be as large as possible.” That does not mean you must use the maximum resolution: a smaller image can be a more practical way to reduce file size while preserving a clear composition.
#1 Best Overall
YouTube names JPG and PNG in its official format guidance. WebP is supported by the browser compressor discussed below, but it is not listed here as an official YouTube requirement; use JPG or PNG when you want to stay with the formats YouTube names.
Choose a sensible size and format
Use 1280 × 720 as a practical working canvas
For a standard 16:9 video thumbnail, 1280 × 720 is a practical working size documented by Buffer’s YouTube resizer. It is below YouTube’s recommended maximum of 3840 × 2160 and well above the 640-pixel minimum width. Starting at 1280 × 720 often avoids carrying unnecessary pixels into the export while retaining a useful canvas for arranging text and imagery.

If your source is larger, resize a copy rather than damaging the original. Keep the crop at 16:9, and check that important text, faces, and logos remain in frame. Do not stretch an image to force the ratio: crop or reposition it instead.
Use JPG for photographs and gradients
JPG uses lossy compression: it reduces file size by discarding image information. It is usually a good first choice for photographs or designs with smooth gradients. Export at high quality, inspect the result, then lower the quality in small steps if it is still over the size target. Watch for blockiness, ringing around high-contrast edges, and softness in faces or lettering.

Use PNG when sharp edges or transparency matter
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it can preserve crisp flat-color edges and text without the compression artifacts that can appear in a JPG. The trade-off is that a PNG may be too large for a 2 MB mobile upload, particularly when the image contains detailed or photographic content. Check the exported file size; if it is too large, try JPG or reduce the dimensions while preserving the composition.
Compress the thumbnail with an image editor
- Keep the original. Open a copy of the source image so you can return to it if later exports look too soft.
- Set the crop. For a standard video, compose the thumbnail in a 16:9 frame. A 1280 × 720 canvas is a documented practical working size; YouTube’s recommended video-thumbnail resolution goes up to 3840 × 2160.
- Choose the format. Start with JPG for a photograph-heavy image. Keep PNG if transparency or hard, clean edges are important.
- Export at high quality. Save a new file rather than overwriting your source. The precise quality control and menu path vary by editor, so use that application’s export or save-for-web control.
- Check the file size. Use your operating system’s file information or the upload dialog. If the export is above 2 MB, lower JPG quality a small amount or resize the image and export again.
- Inspect the actual thumbnail. View it at the size viewers are likely to encounter. Check faces, small text, and edges for softness, blockiness, or halos. If the result is visibly degraded, restore some quality and reduce dimensions instead, or reconsider PNG versus JPG.
- Upload and verify. Upload the finished file in YouTube Studio and confirm that the thumbnail appears as intended. YouTube notes that thumbnail changes may take time to appear.
The 2 MB threshold is about the exported file, not the canvas dimensions. A 1280 × 720 image can still exceed 2 MB depending on its format and image content, while a larger image may compress to a smaller file. Always check the saved result.

Use a browser compressor if you want a quick adjustment
The browser compressor covered by video.yt documents a workflow that accepts PNG, JPG, or WebP, lets you choose a format and quality, compare the before-and-after, and download the compressed result. Its site says compression runs locally in the browser. That is useful if you do not want to install an editor, but the downloaded file still needs to be checked against the 2 MB target.
- Open the compressor and upload your PNG, JPG, or WebP thumbnail.
- Choose an output format. For YouTube’s named formats, select JPG or PNG; WebP is an optional tool-supported format, not an official requirement stated here.
- Adjust quality, then compare the original and compressed previews. Look closely at faces, fine text, and sharp edges.
- Download the result and check its actual file size in your operating system or upload dialog.
- If it remains above 2 MB, reduce quality in small increments or resize the image, then compare again. If visual quality suffers, go back to the original and try the other format.
Fix common size and quality problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The mobile uploader rejects the image as too large | The saved file exceeds the 2 MB mobile video-thumbnail limit. | Check the downloaded file’s size, then reduce JPG quality slightly or resize and export again. Do not rely on canvas dimensions as a proxy for bytes. |
| The thumbnail looks blocky or has halos | JPG compression may be too aggressive, especially around high-contrast edges. | Raise JPG quality and inspect again. If crisp flat-color edges or transparency are essential, try PNG and check whether its size is acceptable. |
| Text or faces look soft | The export may have been resized too small or compressed too heavily. | Return to the original, preserve a useful working canvas such as 1280 × 720, and increase quality before testing another export. |
| The PNG is over the limit | Lossless PNG can retain substantial image data. | Try JPG for a photographic design, or reduce dimensions while keeping the key content readable. Recheck transparency needs before switching formats. |
| The image is cropped or distorted | The working canvas does not match the intended 16:9 composition, or the image was stretched. | Restore the original and crop or reposition it within a 16:9 canvas; do not stretch it to fit. |
| The new thumbnail is not visible immediately | YouTube says thumbnail changes may take time to appear. | Confirm the upload in YouTube Studio and allow time for the change to appear before replacing the file again. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an image compressor: it does not take an existing thumbnail and reduce its file size. It can capture a web page when you need a screenshot for a thumbnail workflow. Its API accepts a URL and returns a screenshot or PDF; the example below captures the Stripe homepage as a WebP image. Use your own public page URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.

Frequently asked questions
Does compressing the thumbnail reduce its pixel dimensions?
Not necessarily. Compression quality can reduce file size while leaving pixel dimensions unchanged. Resizing changes dimensions; it is a separate option when the exported file is still too large.
Can I use a WebP thumbnail?
The cited browser compressor supports WebP, but YouTube Help’s listed formats are JPG and PNG. To follow YouTube’s named format guidance, export as JPG or PNG.
Why does YouTube say a thumbnail change may take time?
YouTube notes that thumbnail changes may take time to appear after upload. Confirm the change in YouTube Studio before assuming the new file failed.
