To compress a scanned PDF without making its pages hard to read, keep an untouched original, use scanned-document optimization settings, and make a conservative test copy. Check small text, fine lines, and shaded or halftone areas at normal viewing size and close zoom before using the result. Compression can reduce detail, and it cannot restore information missing from a blurry or low-resolution scan.
Why scanned PDFs need a different approach
A scanned PDF stores page content as images. Its file size and visible quality are affected by image resolution, compression, and any processing applied to those images. A generic compression preset may not give you enough control to preserve the details that matter in a particular document.
There is no universal output size or setting that guarantees readability. The right balance depends on the source scan, whether pages are color, grayscale, or monochrome, how the PDF will be used, and any fidelity or archival requirements.
Choose settings for the scan type
Adobe’s Acrobat guidance recommends adaptive compression at 300 dpi for grayscale or RGB input and 600 dpi for black-and-white input. These are recommendations for Adobe’s workflow, not universal targets or a way to add detail to an existing scan. Changing a resolution setting cannot recreate detail the scanner never captured.

These formats are not interchangeable in every workflow. If preserving the appearance of the source matters more than reducing file size, favor lossless compression where available. If you need a smaller file, try a lossy option on a copy and review the result rather than assuming the size reduction is worth the visual change. Compress the PDF in Acrobat
Adobe documents a scanned-file enhancement workflow in Acrobat. Labels or access may vary with Acrobat version and plan; the cited documentation does not establish that a particular feature is available on every plan.

- Preserve the source. Make a working copy of the PDF so you can return to the original if the processed pages lose clarity.
- Open scan enhancement. In Acrobat, select Scan & OCR, then Enhance scanned file.
- Choose pages and image settings. Select the pages to process and choose settings appropriate to color/grayscale or monochrome content. For Adobe’s adaptive-compression recommendations, use 300 dpi for grayscale or RGB and 600 dpi for black and white; do not treat these as a way to increase the detail of an existing scan.
- Use filters only when they address a visible problem. Deskew can straighten tilted pages; descreen targets halftone dot patterns; background removal can reduce unwanted page background; and text sharpening may help with softness. Enable only useful adjustments, since processing can also change or remove detail.
- Run OCR only if you want searchable text. If needed, enable Recognize text, choose the appropriate language setting, and check recognition on difficult pages. OCR adds searchable or selectable text; it does not sharpen the page image.
- Enhance and save as a new PDF. Adobe’s documented sequence is to choose the pages and settings, optionally enable text recognition, and select Enhance. Keep the original separate.

Check readability before replacing or sharing the original
Compare the processed copy with the original at the size people will normally use, then zoom in to check fine detail. Include pages that represent the document’s hardest cases, not just a clean text page.

- A page with small print, footnotes, or dense text.
- A page with diagrams, thin rules, or fine line work.
- A page with halftones, shaded backgrounds, or mixed text and images.
Look for softened or broken text, missing thin lines, altered shading, and any background or graphic detail removed by a filter. If readability suffers, return to the working copy, reduce compression or filter intensity, and process it again. Judge the result by legibility and faithful page content as well as file size.

If the original scan is already blurry, skewed beyond correction, or missing fine detail, compression cannot restore what is absent. OCR may make recognized text searchable, but the visible scan can remain difficult to read. If you still have the paper original and its content is important, recapturing it with suitable scan settings may be more useful than repeatedly compressing the existing PDF.

For preservation-sensitive material, compression choices should reflect the collection and the intended use; the Library of Congress notes that scanning and compression decisions depend on the characteristics of the material, with some content requiring different treatment. Avoid assuming that the smallest file is automatically the best archive copy.
