To shrink a large video on a Windows PC, keep the original, encode a separate copy as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, and check the result before uploading. YouTube recommends H.264 when a file is too large, but compression is a quality-versus-size tradeoff—not a way to guarantee identical picture quality in a smaller file. YouTube’s upload cap is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less, so first check whether you need to compress at all.

Check whether the video actually needs compression

YouTube allows uploads up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever limit is reached first. An account must be verified to upload videos longer than 15 minutes. YouTube also recommends using an up-to-date browser for files larger than 20 GB. These are YouTube’s stated rules, not separate India-specific limits. YouTube’s upload-limit guidance

  • If your file is within both limits and uploads reliably, compression is optional.
  • If it exceeds either limit, make a smaller copy. YouTube recommends compressing an oversized video with editing software and using H.264.
  • If the file is large but within the limit, compression may still make uploading more manageable; it does not make the internet connection faster. Encoding happens on your PC, while uploading uses your connection.

YouTube accepts many formats, including MOV, MPEG, MP4, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GPP, WebM, DNxHR, ProRes, CineForm, and HEVC. A file does not need conversion just because it is not MP4. MP3, WAV, and PCM audio-only files cannot be uploaded as videos. YouTube’s supported upload formats

Choose settings that balance size and quality

Use MP4, H.264, and AAC for a general-purpose upload

YouTube’s upload guidance specifies MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, and AAC-LC or Opus audio. Keep the source frame rate and aspect ratio where possible; YouTube recommends a 48 kHz audio sample rate. H.264 is also the codec YouTube specifically advises for compressing files that exceed its upload cap. YouTube’s video and audio encoding settings

Keep the source resolution unless you have a reason to lower it

Reducing resolution can reduce file size, but it also lowers the maximum playback detail. Try adjusting the encoder’s quality or bitrate before downscaling a good-quality source. YouTube’s player adapts to different aspect ratios; 16:9 is standard on computers. Avoid adding black bars or padding to the video itself. YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance

Use bitrate recommendations as a reference, not an upload cap

YouTube says uploads do not require a specific bitrate limit. Its recommended bitrates are starting points for encoding, not guaranteed file sizes or promises of a particular perceived quality. The following figures are for SDR video; frame-rate category matters:

Resolution Standard frame rate High frame rate
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p 16 Mbps 24 Mbps
2160p (4K) 35–45 Mbps 53–68 Mbps

HDR recommendations differ from these SDR values. For example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p HDR at standard frame rates and 15 Mbps at high frame rates; for 2160p HDR, it recommends 44–56 Mbps at standard frame rates and 66–85 Mbps at high frame rates. See YouTube’s encoding table for the full settings and qualifications.

A lower bitrate generally produces a smaller file but can make detail, motion, or gradients look worse. A higher bitrate retains more data but may leave the file large. HandBrake’s Constant Quality control is a different rate-control method from setting a bitrate; a quality-slider value cannot be translated directly into YouTube’s bitrate recommendations. There is no single quality value established as best for every stream recording.

Compress a video on Windows with HandBrake

HandBrake is free, open-source software available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Download it through the official HandBrake download page, rather than a third-party download site. Exact interface labels can vary by release, so use the setting names shown in your installed version.

  1. Check the file. Note the original’s size, duration, resolution, frame rate, and whether it is SDR or HDR. Make sure the destination drive has room for a separate output file.
  2. Keep an untouched original. Do not overwrite the source. If an encode has a problem, the original remains available for another attempt.
  3. Open the source in HandBrake. Choose the recording you want to compress. If you are offered presets, choose one suitable for a general MP4/H.264 encode, then inspect the settings rather than assuming the preset matches your needs.
  4. Set the output format and video codec. Choose MP4 as the container and H.264 (AVC) as the video codec. Use progressive video. Preserve the source frame rate; where the interface offers a constant-frame-rate option, select it if you need a constant rate, but do not change the source rate just to reduce size.
  5. Set quality or bitrate. For a simpler workflow, use HandBrake’s Constant Quality control and make a short test encode to judge the picture before encoding the whole recording. For bitrate-based encoding, use YouTube’s recommended rate for the source resolution, frame-rate category, and SDR/HDR type as a reference. Do not treat it as a maximum upload bitrate or as an exact file-size calculator.
  6. Set audio. Use AAC audio, preferably AAC-LC where available, and 48 kHz sample rate in line with YouTube’s guidance. Keep the audio channels appropriate to the source.
  7. Preserve the frame. Keep the source aspect ratio and avoid adding black bars. Only lower resolution if you accept the lower maximum playback detail and the other settings do not produce a small enough file.
  8. Choose a new filename and destination. Save the output separately from the source, preferably somewhere with enough free disk space for the encode.
  9. Encode and inspect. Start the encode. When it finishes, compare the output size and duration with the original, then check representative scenes for picture defects and listen for missing, distorted, or out-of-sync audio.
  10. Upload the checked copy. Upload through YouTube Studio. If 1080p or 4K playback options are not available immediately, YouTube says processing higher qualities can take several hours. YouTube’s upload-processing troubleshooting guidance

Should you use hardware encoding?

HandBrake includes hardware-encoding presets for supported media engines. The project says it disables those presets when the relevant hardware or drivers are missing or outdated. Hardware encoding can prioritize speed and need not produce identical results to software encoding, so inspect the output rather than assuming that the fastest option gives the same quality. Common compression and upload problems

  • The output is still too large: try a lower quality target or bitrate, or reduce resolution if lower playback detail is acceptable. Make one change at a time and inspect the result.
  • The picture looks blocky or smeared: the encode may be too aggressive for the source, especially during fast motion or detailed scenes. Raise the quality target or bitrate and encode a new copy.
  • The video looks stretched or has black bars: check that the output preserves the source aspect ratio and that you have not added padding. YouTube’s player adapts to aspect ratios; you generally do not need to bake bars into the video.
  • Audio is missing or wrong: confirm that an audio track is enabled and encoded in a supported format such as AAC-LC or Opus. Check the output by playing it before upload.
  • The upload is rejected: check the file size and duration against YouTube’s limits, confirm that the account is verified if the video is over 15 minutes, and use a supported file format. Use an up-to-date browser for uploads larger than 20 GB.
  • High resolutions do not appear after upload: allow YouTube time to process the video; higher-quality versions such as 1080p or 4K may take several hours to become available.
  • The file takes a long time to upload from India: upload time depends on the final file size and your actual sustained upload speed, which can vary. Estimate from those two values rather than assuming a nationwide speed or fixed time.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 with uploaded videos, that is different from compressing a recording for an ordinary upload. StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a YouTube livestream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI works as well as cards. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
