To make a 24-hour video playlist easier to upload, encode a copy at a lower bitrate or resolution, then inspect a representative test segment before processing the full day. First check the destination’s format and size limits: the right export depends on the service and on the source video’s resolution, frame rate, HDR/SDR format, and audio.
For a quick planning estimate, a constant total bitrate of 1 Mbps produces about 10.8 decimal GB over 24 hours. Lowering the bitrate reduces the amount of data, but can reduce picture or sound quality; there is no universal setting that guarantees both a small file and an acceptable result.
Check the source and destination before encoding
“Playlist” could mean one 24-hour file or multiple entries, and the receiving service is not specified. Before choosing settings, check its current upload rules, including maximum file size and duration, accepted formats, and whether it supports resumable uploads. Those details can change what export is practical.
- Record the source resolution, frame rate, and whether it is progressive or interlaced.
- Check whether the picture is SDR or HDR, and note the audio format, number of tracks, and channel layout.
- Determine whether you will upload one file or multiple playlist entries.
- Keep an untouched original and encode a separate copy.
Use the destination’s current encoding guidance rather than assuming one service’s recommendations apply everywhere.

Estimate how much bitrate reduction can save
For a 24-hour file, estimated decimal size in GB is approximately total average bitrate in Mbps × 10.8. Total bitrate includes both video and audio. This is a calculation based on a constant average bitrate over 86,400 seconds—not a published file-size guarantee. Real output varies with content, encoder behavior, audio settings, and container overhead.
If the destination is YouTube, its published SDR recommendations for standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) include 8 Mbps for 1080p, 5 Mbps for 720p, and 2.5 Mbps for 480p. For high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps), the corresponding examples are 12, 7.5, and 4 Mbps. YouTube separately lists HDR recommendations; for example, 1080p standard frame rate is 10 Mbps and 720p is 6.5 Mbps. These are recommendations, not stated minimums or maximums. YouTube also recommends 384 kbps stereo audio. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Using the standard-frame-rate SDR recommendations plus 384 kbps stereo audio gives these approximate 24-hour sizes:

| Example export | Calculation | Approximate size |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p SDR, 8 Mbps video | (8 + 0.384) × 10.8 | 90.5 GB (about 90 GB) |
| 720p SDR, 5 Mbps video | (5 + 0.384) × 10.8 | 58.1 GB (about 58 GB) |
| 480p SDR, 2.5 Mbps video | (2.5 + 0.384) × 10.8 | 31.1 GB (about 31 GB) |
These are derived estimates, not sizes published by YouTube. They assume a constant average total bitrate; your encoded file may differ.

Constant quality
Constant-quality encoding aims to keep perceived visual quality more consistent, so the file size varies with the footage. HandBrake’s official presets generally use this approach. A Web preset is intended for internet sharing, while Creator presets target video hosts such as YouTube and Vimeo. See HandBrake’s official preset documentation.
This is a reasonable starting point if you can accommodate an uncertain output size. Encode a short representative sample and check its result before committing to the full 24 hours.

Average bitrate or target size
If the upload window imposes a strict size limit, use an average bitrate or target-size approach to make the output size more predictable. FFmpeg documents bitrate as an encoding option; the exact controls depend on the encoder and workflow. See FFmpeg’s codec documentation.
For a rough video bitrate budget, divide the desired file size in bits by 86,400 seconds, then leave room for audio and container overhead. A target does not guarantee an exact final size, so leave a margin below a service limit.

Compress a copy with HandBrake
- Open the source. Load the video or the individual file you want to encode. If your playlist is made of multiple entries, determine whether the receiving service expects separate uploads; do not assume HandBrake will preserve the playlist structure as one upload.
- Choose a starting preset. Select a Web preset for general internet sharing or a Creator preset aimed at a hosting service. Treat presets as a starting point, not a substitute for the destination’s current specifications.
- Set the output format and quality. Use constant quality when consistent visual quality matters more than a predetermined file size. If you have a strict size or upload-window target, use an average bitrate or target-size workflow instead, accounting for audio and overhead.
- Preserve the source frame rate. Avoid changing it unless the destination specifically requires otherwise. YouTube recommends uploading at the recorded frame rate and deinterlacing interlaced sources. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4, H.264, progressive video, and the same frame rate as the source; follow different requirements if your destination specifies them. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings.
- Do not upscale. Reducing resolution can lower data requirements, but upscaling a source does not add captured detail. Choose a lower resolution only if the loss of detail is acceptable for the content.
- Encode and review a representative segment. Check motion, small text, dark scenes, speech, and audio synchronization. If artifacts or blur are unacceptable, raise quality or bitrate, or choose a higher resolution; if the file remains too large, test a lower setting.
- Encode the full duration only after the test passes. Save to a new file, retain the original, and allow time for the long encode to finish before beginning the upload.
Estimate the upload time realistically
Divide the file size in bits by your sustained upload rate in bits per second to estimate transfer time. For example, a 58 GB decimal file is about 464 billion bits; at a sustained 5 Mbps upload, the arithmetic estimate is about 25.8 hours. This is a lower-bound planning estimate, not a guarantee: network speed varies, interruptions add time, and overhead is not included.

A smaller file can fit a slow connection’s upload window more easily, but a long encode may itself take many hours. HandBrake notes that hardware presets use dedicated media engines optimized for maximum encoding speed; actual results depend on supported hardware and settings. See HandBrake’s encoder documentation.

The exported file is still too large
Use a lower average bitrate or target size, or test a lower resolution. If using constant quality, remember that output size varies with the footage. Review a sample after each adjustment rather than guessing how much quality a particular setting will retain.
The video looks blocky, soft, or difficult to read
The bitrate or resolution may be too low for the motion, detail, or text in the footage. Re-encode a representative segment at a higher bitrate or resolution and compare it before processing the whole file.

The upload will not finish in the available window
Recalculate from the actual export size and your sustained upstream rate, then allow for fluctuations and interruptions. Check the destination’s current duration, file-size, and format limits; the service is unspecified here, so its exact requirements cannot be assumed.
The result has the wrong frame rate or interlacing artifacts
Check the export’s frame-rate and scan settings against the source and destination guidance. YouTube recommends matching the recorded frame rate and deinterlacing interlaced sources; another service may advise differently.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the end goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than simply uploading a file, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
