To completely remove a PC gaming utility, first uninstall it through Windows, then restart, check its vendor-specific components, and inspect startup entries, services, drivers and leftover folders. The safest sequence is reversible: disable an uncertain auto-start item before deleting it, and remove only entries whose publisher and file path clearly belong to the utility you already removed.
What “completely uninstalled” means
Removing the main program folder is only one part of cleanup. A launcher or gaming utility can leave behind several kinds of components:

A complete cleanup therefore means removing the utility and its dedicated persistence components without damaging Windows, graphics drivers, audio software, anti-malware, shared runtimes or data you still need.
Prepare before uninstalling
- Save work and close the game, launcher window, tray client and updater.
- Confirm which account or library data you want to retain. Copy saves, screenshots, mods and configuration files if they are not synchronized elsewhere.
- If you may reinstall Steam, move the
steamappsfolder outside the Steam directory before removing the client. - Write down the utility’s name, publisher and normal installation path. You will use those details when reviewing startup entries.
- Do not start by deleting a folder from
Program Files. A running process or service may recreate it, and manual deletion can leave the registered uninstaller and service behind.
Use Windows’ normal uninstall path first
Microsoft’s supported baseline is the Installed apps control in Windows Settings. The same function may appear as Add or remove programs on some Windows versions.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On an older interface, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features or search for Add or remove programs.
- Search for the gaming utility, launcher or companion service. Select its menu and choose Uninstall, then complete the vendor wizard.
- If Windows says the program is running, cancel the wizard, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, end the utility’s visible process, tray process and updater, and retry. - Restart Windows even if the uninstaller does not request it. A reboot releases locked files and shows whether a service or startup entry returns.
Uninstall entries can represent separate components. Remove the main client first, then review similarly named anti-cheat, updater or service entries. Do not remove a shared component merely because it appears near the utility alphabetically.
Follow the vendor’s procedure when one exists
Steam
Steam’s documented approach separates personal game data from the client. If you might reinstall, move steamapps outside the Steam installation directory before uninstalling. Then remove Steam through Windows and remove the remaining SteamService entry associated with that installation. Leaving steamapps in place protects downloaded games; deleting it is a separate decision that can remove a large amount of game data.
Epic Games Launcher
Epic documents two supported routes for removing a game: use the game’s menu in the Epic Games Launcher or use Windows Add or remove programs. Choose the route that matches what you are removing. Uninstalling an individual game does not necessarily remove the launcher, and uninstalling the launcher does not automatically mean that every game library or user file should be deleted.

- Close Riot games and the Riot Client.
- In the notification area, open Vanguard’s tray menu and choose its exit option.
- Use the tray uninstall command if offered, or open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall Riot Vanguard.
- Restart Windows and confirm that the Vanguard component no longer starts.
Most games that require Vanguard will not launch while it is absent. If you later need those games, reinstall Vanguard through the relevant Riot game or client and restart when prompted. Removing Vanguard is not the same as removing every Riot game or the Riot Client.
Check for startup residue after the reboot
Task Manager: the quick inventory
Open Task Manager > Startup apps. This view is useful for a fast check of ordinary logon programs and shows whether a familiar launcher still has an enabled startup entry.
- If the entry clearly belongs to the uninstalled utility, select it and choose Disable.
- Restart and verify that the entry stays disabled and the utility does not reappear.
- If the publisher or file path is unfamiliar, leave it alone until you inspect it with Autoruns. A generic name such as “Updater” is not enough evidence of ownership.
Task Manager is not a complete inventory. It does not expose every registry run key, scheduled task, service, driver or boot-time location, so an apparently clean Startup apps list does not prove that all residue is gone.
Use Autoruns for a complete persistence inventory
Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns is the appropriate advanced inspection tool when a launcher still starts, a service remains, or you need to see persistence locations beyond Task Manager. Run it as administrator.

- Download and open Autoruns, then approve the administrator prompt.
- Choose Options > Hide Signed Microsoft Entries to focus the first review on third-party items. This is a filter, not a deletion command; Microsoft entries are still present but hidden from the initial view.
- Review the tabs and entries that correspond to the utility. Autoruns covers Startup-folder items, registry
RunandRunOncekeys, scheduled and boot-related locations, auto-start services, drivers and other persistence points. - Inspect the Publisher, Image Path or file location, and entry name. Match all three to the utility you intentionally removed.
- For an entry that is plausibly related but not yet certain, clear its check box to disable it. Restart and test. Disabling first preserves a recovery path.
- When the machine behaves normally and ownership is certain, select the entry and use the Delete command or toolbar button. Microsoft documents this distinction: unchecking disables an auto-start entry, while the Delete command removes the auto-start configuration.
Do not delete an item merely because it is third-party. Graphics-driver control panels, audio services, anti-malware products, controller software and shared runtime components commonly start with Windows and may be unrelated to the game utility. A path under the removed utility’s own directory, combined with its publisher, is much stronger evidence than a similar-looking name.
Clean boot when you need to isolate a conflict
Microsoft defines a clean boot as starting Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs so background software conflicts affecting apps or games are easier to identify. It is a diagnostic state, not a general-purpose uninstall method.
- Sign in with an administrator account and open System Configuration by searching for
msconfig. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services. Then choose Disable all for the remaining third-party services.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable each enabled startup app, close Task Manager and apply the System Configuration changes.
- Restart and test whether the unwanted launcher or game conflict is gone.
- Restore normal startup after testing. Reopen System Configuration, enable the services and startup apps you need, apply the changes and restart again.
Microsoft specifically warns that the System Configuration utility should be used to change advanced boot options only with guidance from a Microsoft support engineer. Do not alter advanced boot settings as a shortcut for deleting a gaming utility.

Remove a driver or device only when the utility installed one
Some gaming utilities install a virtual device, filter or other driver. Driver cleanup is separate from deleting a startup entry.

- Open Device Manager and expand the category that matches the vendor’s device.
- Confirm the device name and provider belong to the utility you are removing.
- Right-click the device and choose Uninstall device.
- When Windows offers Delete the driver software for this device, select it only when you intend to remove that driver package, not merely the device instance.
- Restart if Device Manager or Windows requests it, then verify that the device is gone and that unrelated hardware still works.
Never use Device Manager as a general cleanup shortcut. Removing a graphics, audio, network, anti-malware or shared input driver because it appears in a gaming-related list can make Windows or other games unstable.
Find and handle leftover files safely
After the reboot and persistence review, inspect the installation folders and documented user-data locations associated with the vendor. Delete only folders clearly named for the uninstalled utility. Common items worth preserving include save data, screenshots, mods, configuration files and game libraries.
- Keep data that another installation may reuse, especially
steamappswhen reinstalling Steam is possible. - Do not empty a whole parent folder if it also contains other games or shared components.
- If a folder is locked, restart and check Autoruns and services before forcing deletion. A locked file often indicates that a background component is still active.
- Do not remove generic folders solely because their names contain “game,” “launcher” or “update.” Verify the publisher and path.
Troubleshooting common failure modes
The uninstaller will not run
Close the game, launcher, tray process and updater. In Task Manager, end only processes that clearly match the utility, then retry the Windows uninstall path. If the process immediately returns, restart Windows and uninstall before opening the launcher again.
The launcher still starts after removal
Check Task Manager’s Startup apps first, then Autoruns with signed Microsoft entries hidden. Look beyond the Startup folder for a Run key, scheduled task, auto-start service or driver. Disable the clearly identified entry, restart, and delete it only after confirming that the utility no longer needs it.

A service returns after you delete its folder
Deleting files does not reliably unregister a service. Reinstalling or running the vendor’s uninstaller may be necessary to remove its registration. Use Autoruns to identify the service’s executable path; do not delete an unrelated service with a similar display name.
A Riot game stops launching
That behavior is expected if the game requires Vanguard. Reinstall Vanguard through the Riot game or client, allow its restart, and test again. Removing Vanguard is appropriate only when you accept that dependent games will remain unavailable until it is restored.
You cannot identify an entry
Leave it enabled while you gather evidence. Check its publisher, full path and related files, and compare those details with the utility’s installation directory. If the entry is signed by Microsoft or belongs to a graphics, audio, security or shared-runtime provider, do not remove it as gaming residue.

Final verification checklist
- The utility is absent from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- You restarted Windows after uninstalling.
- The launcher, tray process and updater no longer run.
- Task Manager’s Startup apps contains no clearly owned entry.
- Autoruns shows no remaining entry whose publisher and path belong to the removed utility.
- Any vendor-specific service or security component has been handled according to its documented procedure.
- Only the intended device or driver was removed in Device Manager.
- Required saves, screenshots, mods, configurations and game libraries remain intact.
- If you used a clean boot, normal startup settings have been restored.
This sequence removes ordinary application files first, then addresses the less visible persistence layers without treating every unfamiliar startup item as disposable.
