“An Unheard Farewell” begins in Chapter 2’s Valley of Ashes, at the Adjutant Sous-Officier’s wrecked carriage near the Guidepost and Demolished Path route. Accept his request, unlock the shaft elevator by destroying the glowing Nephtoglobin growths, then jump from the moving lift onto the hidden mid-shaft ledge. Burn the web-like or gold-vine barrier with fire transmutation, defeat the scout commander, take the scouts’ letter, and report back. The quest always awards Sleight of Hand Amber; your truth-or-lie answer changes the additional follow-up reward.

Where “An Unheard Farewell” starts
Enter the Valley of Ashes in Chapter 2
The quest is available in Chapter 2, in the Valley of Ashes. Continue through the area until you have passed the first Grenadier. The starting point is before the descent toward the large broken bridge, so do not wait until you have completed the bridge section.
Find the wrecked carriage
Look for a damaged carriage beside the route associated with the Guidepost and Demolished Path. The Adjutant Sous-Officier is inside. Approach the carriage and interact with the window rather than searching for a conventional standing NPC in the open area.

Accept the missing-scouts objective
Speak with the Adjutant and agree to locate his missing scouts. The conversation establishes the quest objective. If you have not accepted this dialogue, the later cave and evidence do not count as a completed report for “An Unheard Farewell.”

How to reach and unlock the elevator
Follow the broken-bridge route
From the carriage, proceed down the route toward the large broken bridge. Cross the available platforms and continue forward until you reach the next lantern and the elevator area. The route is a traversal section rather than a separate quest branch: keep moving through the platforms until the lift shaft is visible.
Destroy the Nephtoglobin growths
The lift is blocked by glowing Nephtoglobin growths, also described in walkthroughs as glowing orbs. Shoot or otherwise destroy each visible growth around the lift route. The lift cannot be used for the complete shaft traversal until these obstructions are removed.
Terminology can vary between guides: “Nephtoglobin growths” and “glowing orbs” refer to the same lift-blocking targets. Use the visual glow and the quest area’s objective text as your guide if a later game update uses different wording.

After clearing the growths, continue through the exterior traversal section around the shaft. This completes the lift route and allows the platform to travel through the full vertical passage. If the lift stops short or does not reach the expected height, look for an overlooked glowing target or an unfinished traversal segment before attempting the jump.

Finding the scouts’ hidden cave
Do not ride directly to the top
The scouts’ cave is not on the obvious upper exit. Once the lift is fully unlocked, ride it through the shaft and watch the surrounding walls instead of holding course for the top. The cave entrance is a mid-shaft detour, and continuing upward without stopping can make you pass it.
Jump to the mid-shaft ledge
As the lift moves, identify the narrow ledge partway along the shaft, opposite the route you used earlier. Jump from the moving platform onto that ledge. The timing is the central traversal challenge: wait until the lift is close enough for a controlled jump, and make sure you are aiming for the ledge rather than the shaft wall.
If you miss, recover at the nearest safe point and ride the lift again. The cave route is reached from the lift itself; there is no need to search the upper path for a second entrance.

Recognize the sealed entrance
On the ledge, look for a barrier made of web-like material or gold-colored vines. This is the entrance to the hidden scouts’ cave. The different descriptions refer to the same barrier encountered on the mid-shaft ledge.

Burn the barrier with fire transmutation
Equip or activate fire transmutation and apply it to the barrier. The web-like or gold-vine material must be burned away before you can enter. If the barrier does not react, confirm that fire transmutation is the active ability and that you are targeting the material itself, not the surrounding stone or the ledge.
Defeat the cave enemy and recover the evidence
Prepare for the elite encounter
Inside the cave, confront the enemy identified by walkthroughs as either the scout commander or an elite soldier. The naming differs, but the encounter is the same quest objective. Treat the opponent as a stronger target than an ordinary patrol and avoid rushing past it: the evidence is obtained after the enemy is defeated.
Use posture damage and parries
Guides recommend parries as a reliable way to damage the enemy’s posture and create attack openings. The exact combat sequence depends on your build and timing, so use the defensive and offensive tools with which you are most consistent. The important requirement is to defeat the cave enemy, not to win with a particular weapon or technique.
Take the scouts’ letter or orders
Search the area after the fight and collect the scouts’ letter, also described as their orders. This document is the evidence the Adjutant requested. Some walkthroughs also report a chest in the cave containing Pure Blade Material. Treat that chest as an additional area pickup rather than the quest evidence itself: the letter or orders are the item that advances the report objective.

Return to the Adjutant and finish the quest
Backtrack to the wrecked carriage
Leave the cave and retrace the route to the Adjutant’s carriage near Demolished Path. Return to the same carriage window used to start the quest. Speak with the Adjutant after collecting the scouts’ document; the report dialogue will then present the final decision.
Choose truth or lie
The dialogue asks whether you will tell the Adjutant what happened or give him a lie. Either answer completes “An Unheard Farewell” and grants the shared core reward, Sleight of Hand Amber. The choice affects the additional follow-up outcome, so select according to the result you want or the role-playing decision that fits your character.

The bonus details are not described identically in every walkthrough, so the truth and lie results should be read as source-dependent follow-up outcomes rather than universal item guarantees. The amber reward is the consistent part of the quest reward. If your game displays different names or quantities, follow the in-game dialogue and reward screen for your version.
Rewards and what Sleight of Hand Amber does
Sleight of Hand Amber
Sleight of Hand Amber is the consistently reported core reward for the quest. Walkthrough descriptions associate it with improved firearm reload time and faster weapon switching. The item is awarded regardless of whether you tell the Adjutant the truth or lie.

Aggressive Reconnaissance achievement
PowerPyx lists “Aggressive Reconnaissance” as the quest achievement associated with this objective. If the achievement does not appear immediately, verify that you defeated the cave commander or elite soldier, collected the scouts’ letter, and completed the report conversation at the carriage.
Possible Pure Blade Material chest
Coverage of the cave also identifies a chest containing Pure Blade Material. Its presence is reported as a cave-area pickup, separate from Sleight of Hand Amber and the truth-or-lie reward. Check the cave after the fight before leaving if you want to collect every reported item in the area.
Troubleshooting the route
The Adjutant is not at the carriage
- Confirm that you are in Chapter 2’s Valley of Ashes.
- Make sure you have passed the first Grenadier but have not mistaken a later bridge area for the starting point.
- Search beside the Guidepost/Demolished Path route and interact with the wrecked carriage window.
- If the conversation has already been completed, check the quest objective rather than looking for a second starting NPC.
The elevator will not move through the shaft
- Return to the lift area and inspect the surrounding walls for every glowing Nephtoglobin growth or orb.
- Destroy the targets rather than simply walking past them.
- Continue through the exterior traversal section after clearing the growths; unlocking the targets and completing the route are both required for the full lift trip.
You cannot find the cave
- Do not ride the lift directly to the top.
- Watch for the narrow ledge partway up the shaft, opposite the route used earlier.
- Jump from the moving lift onto that ledge.
- Look for the web-like or gold-vine barrier and use fire transmutation on it.
The barrier does not burn
- Confirm that fire transmutation, rather than another transmutation or attack, is active.
- Target the web or vines directly.
- Move close enough to the barrier for the ability to connect, while remaining on the ledge.
The report conversation does not complete
- Defeat the scout commander or elite soldier inside the cave.
- Collect the scouts’ letter or orders after the fight.
- Return to the original carriage near Demolished Path and use its window interaction.
- Select either dialogue answer; both truth and lie complete the quest when the evidence objective is satisfied.

- Reach Chapter 2’s Valley of Ashes.
- Pass the first Grenadier and find the wrecked carriage near the Guidepost/Demolished Path route.
- Speak through the carriage window to the Adjutant Sous-Officier.
- Accept the request to locate the missing scouts.

- Destroy all glowing Nephtoglobin growths or orbs.

Terminology and patch differences
Walkthroughs use several names for the same locations or objectives: Nephtoglobin growths may be called glowing orbs; the cave opponent may be called a scout commander or elite soldier; and the entrance may be described as a web barrier or gold vines. These wording differences do not indicate separate quest paths. Use the objective text and item names shown in your current game as the final authority if a later patch changes labels.
No published developer statement or authoritative completion-rate statistic is established for this quest. The practical route above is based on current secondary walkthrough coverage, and the truth-or-lie bonus details may vary by version or guide. The shared amber reward, hidden mid-shaft cave, fire-transmutation barrier, evidence letter, and return to the Adjutant are the stable requirements for completion.
