To use YouTube’s 90-day strike-expiry option, open the Copyright School link or prompt in your copyright-strike notification or YouTube Studio, complete the school, then wait 90 days from the date YouTube applied the strike. Completing the school does not restore the removed livestream. YouTube also says that when an active livestream is removed for copyright, live-streaming access is restricted for seven days.

Complete Copyright School and check the strike status

  1. Open the strike notice. Use the Copyright School link or prompt in the copyright-strike notification, or look for the strike and its available actions in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s guidance describes the requirement, but does not establish one stable screen-by-screen interface for every account.
  2. Complete Copyright School. YouTube requires completion for the strike-expiry route. If you have completed it before, the 90-day period still runs from the date the strike was applied, not from the date you completed the school.
  3. Check Studio for separate restrictions. Confirm the strike status and whether livestreaming access is still restricted. YouTube says an active livestream removed for copyright results in a seven-day live-streaming restriction.

The school-and-wait route expires the strike; it does not reinstate the removed video. Check the status in Studio rather than assuming the livestream will return when the 90 days pass.

First identify what happened to the livestream

A copyright strike is not the same as a Content ID claim. YouTube scans live broadcasts for matches to third-party material, including another live broadcast. If its systems detect a match, YouTube may show a placeholder image and warn you to stop using the material. If you address the issue, the stream may continue; if the material remains, the broadcast may be interrupted or terminated. A livestream can also be terminated after a copyright or Community Guidelines strike.

An archived livestream can receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends. That claim is distinct from a copyright removal request that results in a strike. Check the notice and Studio status to determine which action YouTube took before choosing a response.

If you had permission to use the material

YouTube says a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for a licensed stream to avoid interruption. A stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted, including when the material is territory-restricted. Contact the rights holder about allowlisting and confirm that the permission covers the content, channel, and relevant territories.

Choose the right strike-resolution route

YouTube lists three ways to resolve a copyright strike. Choose based on whether you accept the removal, can obtain the claimant’s cooperation, or believe YouTube removed the material by mistake.

Route When it fits What to expect
Complete Copyright School and wait You are not contesting the removal and want to use the strike-expiry route. Complete the school; the strike expires 90 days after it was applied. The removed video is not reinstated through this route.
Ask for a retraction You can contact the person or organization that submitted the copyright removal request and seek their agreement to withdraw it. Resolution depends on the claimant retracting the request.
Submit a counter notification You believe the removal was mistaken, such as because the content was misidentified or qualifies for a copyright exception. This is a legal request, not a routine Copyright School step. YouTube forwards it to the claimant, who has 10 US business days to respond with evidence of legal action.

When to use a counter notification

Submit one only if you believe the removal was a mistake, including where you believe the material was misidentified or qualifies for an exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain. A counter notification shares your information with the claimant. YouTube warns that false information or misuse of the process can have account or legal consequences. Consider qualified legal help if the dispute is complex or you are concerned about disclosure of personal information; a lawyer is not required merely to complete Copyright School.

Check whether a scheduled removal is still pending

A scheduled copyright removal may give you seven days to act before the content is removed and a strike is applied. During that window, deleting the content can avoid the strike. Once removal and the strike have taken effect, deleting the video does not resolve the strike. Read the notice carefully to confirm whether the removal is scheduled or already complete.

What a strike means for future livestreams

YouTube says that an active livestream removed for copyright leads to a strike and restricts live-streaming access for seven days. Separately, three copyright strikes within 90 days can make a channel subject to termination. These are copyright-strike consequences; do not treat a Content ID claim as though it were automatically a strike.

Before streaming again, review the material you plan to use and retain permission or licensing records. If a rights holder has licensed content for your channel, resolve any allowlisting issue before going live. YouTube’s copyright and livestream guidance explains the relevant policies; use the specific help links in your Studio notice for the action on your account.

Or let it run in the cloud

Copyright School resolves a strike; it does not prevent future rights issues. For an already-prepared video or playlist that you have the rights to stream, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream running from the cloud:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
