To compare the electricity cost of running a YouTube stream 24/7, measure the equipment at the wall with a compatible plug-in power meter, record its energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh) over a representative period, then multiply that use by your applicable electricity rate. Compare setups over the same duration and under similar conditions; a computer’s bitrate or resolution settings do not reveal how much power it draws.

What to measure—and what the numbers mean

First decide which equipment’s electricity you want to count. That might be the streaming computer or encoder, plus other devices you choose to include. Keep that boundary consistent when comparing setups. A meter between the outlet and the equipment measures only what is connected through it.

Watts (W) describe power at a moment; kWh measure energy used over time. A cost estimate requires an energy quantity and a price per kWh. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains that “Watts measure power at a specific moment, but we use Watthours (Wh) to measure how much electricity is used over a period of time.” EIA: Measuring electricity.

  • 1 kilowatt (kW) used for 1 hour equals 1 kWh.
  • Watts ÷ 1,000 = kilowatts; kilowatts × hours = kWh.
  • kWh × the applicable unit rate = the usage-based energy charge.

How to measure and compare streaming costs

  1. Choose the equipment boundary. List the computer or encoder and any other equipment whose consumption you intend to include. Use the same equipment boundary for each comparison.
  2. Check the meter before connecting it. Choose a plug-in electricity monitor compatible with your outlet and electrical system. Check its documented maximum rating and accuracy, and confirm whether it accumulates kWh or displays only instantaneous watts. The Efficiency Maine meter instructions describe connecting a monitor between an outlet and equipment.
  3. Measure representative operation. Connect the selected equipment through the meter and record the accumulated kWh at the start and end of a defined interval, or reset the meter’s energy counter if it supports that function. If it reports only watts, take readings during representative operation and record the exact duration. A single watt reading cannot show energy use over a changing period.
  4. Record the operating setup. Note the runtime, equipment included, and relevant stream configuration. If comparing settings, measure each configuration on the actual equipment under similar conditions rather than estimating electricity use from resolution or bitrate.
  5. Apply your electricity rate. Find the usage-based price per kWh on your current bill or tariff for the measured period. If your tariff has time-of-use rates, apply the relevant rates to the periods in which the equipment ran. Keep fixed standing, service, or daily charges separate from the incremental energy cost of the stream.
  6. Calculate and label any estimate. Multiply measured kWh by the applicable unit rate for the measured interval. To estimate a day or year, scale the measured use only if the interval represents normal operation; state the measurement period and treat the result as an estimate.
  7. Compare like with like. Report runtime, kWh, included equipment, configuration, applicable rate or time-of-use periods, and resulting energy charge for each setup.

Calculate the energy charge

For a meter that records accumulated energy, subtract the starting kWh reading from the ending reading. Multiply the difference by your applicable rate per kWh. For example, if a setup uses E kWh during the measurement interval and your applicable unit rate is R per kWh, the energy charge for that interval is E × R. Use your bill’s units and currency; do not substitute a general average for your own tariff.

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

If you have only a steady watt reading, estimate energy as (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours. This is less direct than reading accumulated kWh, especially when the equipment’s load changes. A short test scaled to 24 hours or a year is an estimate, not a measurement of that full period. The meter instruction sheet provides an annualization example based on measured kWh, test hours, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, and a per-kWh rate; its example rate is not a current universal price.

Use your tariff, not a generic electricity price

Electricity rates vary by locality, customer category, and tariff. Use the marginal energy rate that applies to your measured period. If your price changes by time of day, calculate the energy charge using the applicable rate for each period rather than applying one blended rate to all usage. Exclude fixed charges when estimating the extra energy cost attributable to the streaming setup.

Why stream settings do not tell you the electricity cost

YouTube’s encoder guidance covers delivery and video quality, not the power draw of a particular computer. The same stream settings can run on different equipment with different electricity use, so measure the setup rather than converting bitrate or resolution into watts. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Its guidance does not provide a wattage mapping for encoder settings. Common measurement problems

  • The meter shows watts, but you need kWh. Watts are a momentary power reading. If the meter cannot accumulate energy, record readings over a defined, representative interval; a single reading is not enough to determine consumption over time.
  • The test was unusually short or atypical. Equipment load can change during operation. Measure a representative period and label any daily or annual scaling as an estimate.
  • The comparison includes different equipment. Make the equipment boundary explicit, then repeat measurements with the same items included in each setup.
  • The cost seems inconsistent with the bill. Check that you used the correct unit rate, time-of-use period, and currency, and that fixed charges were not mixed into the incremental energy calculation.
  • The meter does not fit or is not rated for the setup. Stop and check compatibility and the specific meter’s documented rating before use.

Or let it run in the cloud

A plug-in meter measures electricity used by local equipment; it does not make that equipment unnecessary. If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud.
