You do not compare screenshot pixels with Loki. Use a browser test such as Playwright to capture pages and compare them with approved baselines; use Grafana Loki to query timestamped logs that can help explain a failed visual test. The two tools answer different questions and work best when you correlate them with a shared test-run ID.
What Loki can—and cannot—tell you about a screenshot
Grafana describes Loki as a horizontally scalable log aggregation system. It collects and queries log streams using labels and LogQL; it does not compare PNG, JPEG, or other screenshot pixels. Loki’s overview explains its log-focused model.
For screenshot comparison, a browser test captures a rendered page and checks it against a reviewed reference image. Playwright Test provides screenshot assertions and baseline management. Loki can then help answer what the application or test was doing around the capture time—for example, whether a request failed or an error was logged—provided those events are sent to Loki.
| Need | Browser screenshot test | Loki/Grafana |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Rendered browser screenshot and approved baseline | Timestamped log streams and labels |
| Question answered | Did the rendered UI differ beyond the configured tolerance? | What logged events or errors occurred around the test or incident? |
| Typical output | Screenshot, diff, and test result | Log query results, visualized log volume, dashboards, or alerts |
| Main limitation | Environmental variation and dynamic content can add noise | Loki does not inspect or diff screenshot pixels |
Set up repeatable screenshot comparisons with Playwright
The example below uses Playwright Test’s documented screenshot assertion. Install Playwright Test in a JavaScript project and install the browser binary required by your project before running it. Keep the test route, browser, viewport, data, authentication, and capture environment consistent between baseline generation and later runs.

1. Add a visual test
Create a test such as tests/homepage.spec.js:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
Replace the example URL with the route you own or are authorized to test. The first assertion can create a reference screenshot if none exists. Treat that image as a proposed baseline: inspect it, confirm that it represents the intended UI, and commit or otherwise approve it through your team’s normal review process. Do not treat automatic baseline creation as approval.
2. Run and review the comparison
Run the test in the same environment used to create the baseline. Playwright warns that screenshots can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; its guidance is to run comparisons in the same environment as the baseline. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

When a test fails, inspect the actual screenshot and diff before changing the reference. Classify the difference as an intended design update, a real rendering regression, or capture noise. Update a baseline only after someone has reviewed and accepted the change; a baseline-update command does not establish that a change is correct.
Control visual noise without hiding real regressions
Stabilize the page and capture environment
- Use fixed test data and a predictable authentication state.
- Keep viewport, browser version, operating system, and relevant browser settings consistent.
- Wait for the page state your test actually needs, rather than capturing during an uncontrolled transition.
- Control clocks, rotating content, animations, ads, or other volatile regions only when their changes are outside the behavior the test is intended to verify.
Playwright supports screenshot styles for controlling volatile elements. Apply such masking or hiding deliberately: suppressing a region also means the comparison will not catch meaningful changes there. See the screenshot assertion options.

Choose a project-specific tolerance
Playwright exposes maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio, and a color threshold for screenshot comparisons. There is no universally correct tolerance: begin with a strict comparison on stable pages, inspect actual diffs, and adjust only when you understand the source and impact of noise. A permissive threshold can hide a real visual defect; an overly strict one can flag harmless rendering variation. Configuration details are in Playwright’s visual comparison documentation.
Correlate a failed visual test with Loki logs
Send relevant application and test-run logs to Loki with timestamps and useful, bounded labels. Include context such as a run identifier, build version, and environment in log fields or labels where appropriate, then query the matching service and time interval in Grafana. Loki’s labels identify streams; avoid turning highly variable values such as unique run IDs into unbounded stream labels if that would create excessive label cardinality. Keep the run identifier available in log content or another searchable field if it is not a suitable label.

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- Record the test run ID and capture time in the test output and relevant application events.
- When the screenshot assertion fails, inspect its actual image and diff first.
- Open Grafana Explore and query the relevant Loki stream and time range for that run, service, build, or environment.
- Check logged errors, failed requests, and events near the capture to help distinguish a rendering regression from an application or test failure.
The exact LogQL expression depends on your stream labels and log format; do not copy a query with labels your Loki deployment does not use. Grafana’s Loki documentation describes querying logs, while Grafana’s logs documentation covers exploring log lines and context.
Keep screenshot evidence separate from log storage
Store baselines, actual screenshots, and visual diffs as browser-test or CI artifacts according to your team’s retention policy. Link them to the test run, and use the run context in logs to make investigation easier. The documented Loki workflow is for log aggregation and querying; it is not a built-in screenshot artifact store or pixel-diff service.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot assertion fails repeatedly with small differences | Capture environment or page content is changing | Match the baseline environment and stabilize test data, readiness, and volatile regions before changing tolerance. |
| A large unexpected diff appears | Possible UI regression, failed page load, wrong test state, or changed baseline environment | Inspect actual and expected images; verify route, auth, data, browser, and application logs before accepting a new baseline. |
| The baseline changes but the defect remains | A generated reference was accepted without review | Restore or regenerate from a known-good state, then approve only after reviewing the change. |
| No useful Loki results for the failing run | Relevant events were not shipped, the time range is wrong, or query labels do not match the deployment | Confirm ingestion, timestamps, stream labels, and run context; widen the interval around capture time. |
| Expecting Loki to show a webpage image diff | Confusion between log monitoring and browser visual testing | Use the browser test’s screenshot and diff artifacts; use Loki only to investigate correlated log events. |
