Cypress can capture a website screenshot, but cy.screenshot() does not compare images or create an overlay by itself. To compare a current page with an approved baseline, add a visual-testing plugin or service that integrates with Cypress. Its review interface can show the baseline and current capture together, or combine them in an overlay or highlighted difference view.
What an image overlay shows
A visual comparison starts with two images: an approved baseline and a new capture produced by a test. An overlay puts the images on top of each other so shifted edges, changed spacing, and altered colors are easier to spot. A difference view highlights pixels or regions that differ. The exact views and review controls depend on the plugin or service you choose.
Cypress’s own cy.screenshot() command captures an image; Cypress does not perform image comparison itself. The comparison and overlay workflow comes from the visual-testing integration.
Set up a reliable Cypress comparison
- Choose a meaningful checkpoint. Use Cypress to navigate to a particular page, open a component, or drive the application into a specific state before capturing. Capture deliberate UI states rather than every incidental point in a test.
- Make the state reproducible. For changing API data, use
cy.intercept()with fixture data so the test sees predictable responses. Keep the browser and rendering environment consistent between baseline creation and later runs. Cypress screenshots disable JavaScript timers and CSS animations by default, which helps reduce variation during capture. - Add an integration. Select a Cypress-compatible visual-testing plugin or hosted service, install and configure it according to its current documentation, and use its Cypress command or workflow to save a baseline and compare subsequent captures. Cypress’s guide lists both open-source plugins and hosted services; their setup and review steps are not interchangeable.
- Review the result. Inspect the baseline and current images, then use the integration’s overlay or highlighted difference view to locate changes. Approve a new baseline only when the visual change is intentional.
- Control unavoidable variation narrowly. If a third-party widget or ad cannot be made deterministic, mask only the affected region using the integration’s supported mechanism. A broad page-wide threshold can hide real regressions elsewhere.
Where the Cypress screenshot command fits
it('captures the account page at a stable checkpoint', () => {
cy.intercept('GET', '/api/account', { fixture: 'account.json' }).as('account');
cy.visit('/account');
cy.wait('@account');
cy.screenshot('account-page');
});
This example captures a screenshot after the test receives fixture-backed account data. It does not create a baseline comparison or overlay; connect the capture checkpoint to the command or workflow documented by your chosen visual-testing integration.

Choose the right capture scope and tool
Element or full page?
- Capture an element for a component-level check. A focused image reduces unrelated page changes in the comparison and gives the resulting diff a clearer owner.
- Capture a full page when the page’s overall layout is what you need to validate. Full-page captures can include more unrelated variation, so stabilize or mask dynamic areas carefully.
Local plugin or hosted service?
| Approach | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Local or CI-based plugin | Image comparison can remain in your project or CI environment, avoiding transfer of images to a hosted comparison service. Your team is responsible for baselines, CI artifacts, review, and consistent rendering. |
| Hosted service | May provide a service-specific comparison and review workflow, such as pull-request review, baseline approval, or cross-browser and responsive rendering. Check current capabilities, Cypress compatibility, image handling, and pricing with the provider. |
Cypress’s guide lists Cypress Image Diff, Cypress Image Snapshot, Cypress Visual Regression, and Visual Regression Diff as open-source options, along with hosted services including Applitools Eyes, Argos, Chromatic, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Percy, Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io. This is a set of options, not a ranking or guarantee that every product fits every project. The plugin catalog changes: for example, its listing for Cypress Image Snapshot 11.0.0 shows an update in September 2026 and a requirement for Cypress 15.10.0 or newer. Verify the live catalog and package documentation before installing or relying on a version-specific setup.
Questions to check before adopting a tool
- Does it capture the pages, elements, or components you need?
- Where are baselines stored, and who can approve updates?
- How are differences surfaced in CI or pull requests, and how can reviewers share them?
- Does it support the browsers and responsive widths your tests require?
- How does it handle dynamic regions and rendering variation?
- What Cypress versions does it support, and how are captured images handled?
Reduce noisy differences without hiding regressions
Visual tests are most useful when a difference corresponds to a real change. Fix unstable inputs first: fixture-backed network responses and a consistent rendering environment make comparisons more meaningful. Cypress’s default suppression of timers and CSS animations also reduces some capture-time movement.

When a region remains inherently variable, use a narrow mask for that region rather than loosening the comparison across the whole page. Review the overlay or diff before changing a baseline; a difference may be an unintended regression, not harmless noise.
Troubleshoot common comparison problems
- The test saves an image but reports no comparison.
cy.screenshot()only captures. Configure a visual-testing integration and use its documented baseline and comparison workflow. - Every run shows differences in data-driven content. Stub the relevant API with
cy.intercept()and a fixture, then ensure the test waits for the response before capture. - Text, edges, or layout differ between machines. Confirm that baseline and current captures use a consistent browser and rendering environment. Inspect the changed region rather than immediately approving a new baseline.
- An ad or third-party widget changes unpredictably. If you cannot control its content, mask only that region using the integration’s supported feature.
- A plugin setup or command fails after an upgrade. Check the plugin’s current package documentation and catalog entry for supported Cypress versions and configuration; do not assume an older setup still applies.
- The diff is too broad to review. Capture the component or element relevant to the test instead of the whole page, unless page-wide layout is the specific behavior under test.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot capture without configuring a browser, ScreenshotNeo offers a single GET request. This captures an image; it does not replace a visual-testing integration’s baseline comparison or overlay review.

Can Cypress create an image overlay with cy.screenshot() alone?
No. The command captures an image; a visual-testing plugin or service must supply image comparison and any overlay or difference view.
