There is no universal cheapest brand to run. The current listed prices in the comparable 1.5-ton, 3-star examples are ₹36,500 for Voltas and ₹38,990 for Blue Star; an exact like-for-like LG retail price is not established here. Electricity cost depends on the specific model’s BEE annual units or ISEER, your tariff and usage, while installation, warranty extensions and repairs can erase a small purchase-price difference. Compare one exact model per brand and add every ownership cost before deciding.
What “total cost” means for an AC
Use this calculation for the period you expect to own the unit:
Total cost = purchase price + installation and extras + electricity + maintenance or AMC + paid warranty + repair or replacement allowance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompare models with the same nominal capacity, split-inverter design and BEE rating year. A 1.5-ton label alone does not make two machines equivalent. Cooling capacity, rated input, ISEER, annual energy units, ambient-temperature capability, noise, warranty coverage and the installation package all affect value.

Prices, stock, electricity tariffs, promotions and warranty terms change. Record the seller, city, quotation date and exact model number so that two offers are genuinely comparable.
Current price anchors: what is known and what is missing
The available official-store listings provide useful starting points, but they are not a complete three-way quote.
| Brand and exact listing | Capacity and type | BEE rating | Displayed price | What the price does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Voltas 183INV Vertis Zephyr Gold | 1.5 ton split inverter | 3 star | ₹36,500 offer price (MRP ₹64,990) | Installation inclusions, city-specific delivery, current stock, warranty extensions and future electricity cost |
| Blue Star G Smart Wi-Fi inverter | 1.48 ton (approximately 1.5 ton) split inverter | 3 star | ₹38,990 sale price (MRP ₹61,500) | Installation inclusions, city-specific delivery, current stock, warranty extensions and future electricity cost |
| LG 2026 BEE-rated lineup | Exact retail model not identified | 2026 announcement, but no like-for-like listing here | Not stated | Do not substitute an unrelated LG model or assume a price from the announcement |
On these displayed prices, Blue Star costs ₹2,490 more than the Voltas offer. That is only an upfront difference; it is not a running-cost or five-year verdict. Obtain an LG quotation for the same capacity, split-inverter configuration and BEE year before ranking the brands.
Why tonnage is not enough
The Kerala Energy Conservation model table illustrates the variation even among nominally 1.5-ton units:
| Model | Nominal capacity | Rated cooling capacity | Rated input |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voltas 4501299 | 1.5 ton | 4,850 W | 1,900 W |
| LG LSA5FP2VTY1 | 1.5 ton | 5,125 W | 1,970 W |
| Blue Star 2HW18RA | 1.5 ton | 5,101 W | 1,950 W |
These are model-level examples, not brand averages and not the same models as the current store price anchors. Rated input is a laboratory or nameplate point; an inverter does not draw that power continuously. For a real comparison, photograph each unit’s BEE label and record annual energy consumption in kWh, ISEER, rated cooling capacity, refrigerant, operating-temperature range and noise specification.
Build a like-for-like comparison sheet
1. Lock the technical match
- Choose the same nominal capacity, such as 1.5 ton, after checking room heat load and local climate.
- Match split-inverter construction and the same BEE rating year. A 2026 5-star model is not directly comparable with an older rating-year 3-star model.
- Record the exact model code, not just a series name or a retailer’s shortened title.
- Use the label or manual’s annual units and ISEER. Do not calculate consumption from a brand average.
2. Record the conditions that change performance
- Cooling capacity and rated power input.
- Declared ambient-temperature capability, particularly if the room routinely experiences very hot weather.
- Indoor and outdoor unit noise where the exact model documents it.
- Included pipe length, drain hose, outdoor stand, wiring, plug, delivery and commissioning.
- Compressor, PCB, parts and labour warranty terms, including exclusions and registration requirements.
3. Ask for one installed quotation
Ask every seller to quote the same scope in writing: standard copper-pipe length, extra pipe per metre, drain extension, electrical cable, stabilizer if required, outdoor stand, wall drilling, transport, old-AC removal or exchange, vacuuming, leak testing and commissioning. A low appliance price can become expensive when every accessory is added separately.

Installation and warranty can change the ranking
A BSES Delhi replacement-scheme sheet lists common extras separately, including extended warranty, stabilizer, copper piping, electrical wire, drain piping, stand, delivery and electrical plug. Its one-year extended-warranty examples were ₹1,180 for Blue Star, ₹2,990 for Voltas and ₹3,450 for LG. Those are scheme-specific 2023 figures, not current national prices. Use them only to understand the kinds of charges that may appear; request a fresh quote for your city and date.

Calculate electricity cost correctly
For each model, use:
Annual electricity cost = BEE annual units (kWh) × your tariff (₹/kWh)
For a multi-year view:
Period electricity cost = annual units × tariff × ownership years
If your tariff has slabs, fixed charges or time-of-use rates, calculate each slab instead of multiplying by one headline number. Keep the tariff assumption next to the result; a cost without a tariff and usage period is not portable between households.
Illustrative scenario using the label value
Suppose a model’s label states 1,200 kWh per year, your effective tariff is ₹8 per kWh, and you keep the AC for five years. Electricity is 1,200 × ₹8 × 5 = ₹48,000. This is an example calculation, not the consumption of any particular Voltas, LG or Blue Star model. Replace 1,200 with the exact annual-units figure on your label.
Rated-input stress test (not a bill forecast)
The model table can show why nameplate power alone is insufficient. If each unit were forced to draw its rated input continuously for eight hours a day over 120 days, at ₹8 per kWh, the arithmetic would be:
Rank #3

| Model | Rated input | Energy in this artificial scenario | Annual cost at ₹8/kWh | Five-year cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Voltas 4501299 | 1.900 kW | 1,824 kWh | ₹14,592 | ₹72,960 |
| LG LSA5FP2VTY1 | 1.970 kW | 1,891.2 kWh | ₹15,129.60 | ₹75,648 |
| Blue Star 2HW18RA | 1.950 kW | 1,872 kWh | ₹14,976 | ₹74,880 |
Inverter modulation, thermostat cycling, room insulation, outdoor temperature and fan settings make real use different. Treat this table as a transparent upper-load arithmetic exercise, never as a forecast or a reason to choose one brand.
Does a 5-star AC recover its higher price?
It can, but only when the electricity saving exceeds the premium and the unit is used long enough. Use:
Payback years = (higher purchase price + required extra installation cost) ÷ annual bill saving
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Calculate at least three cases:
| Case | Usage inputs to vary | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Low use | Fewer hours per day, fewer cooling months, lower tariff | The efficiency premium may take many years to recover |
| Medium use | Your measured or best-estimate hours, months and tariff | Most useful planning case |
| High use | Long daily operation, more months, higher tariff | Savings can justify a higher purchase price sooner |
LG’s January 21, 2026 announcement says industry estimates indicate that moving to a new 5-star AC under the 2026 norms can save approximately ₹19,000 over 10 years, depending on usage and tariff rates. That is a conditional manufacturer-reported estimate, not a guaranteed saving for every household. Recalculate it with the exact two models’ annual units and your bill.
Worked payback example
Assume a 5-star model and a 3-star model differ by ₹10,000 after installation, and the 5-star unit reduces your bill by ₹2,500 per year under your medium-use scenario. Payback is ₹10,000 ÷ ₹2,500 = four years. If low use reduces the annual saving to ₹1,000, payback becomes ten years; if high use raises it to ₹4,000, payback is 2.5 years. The model’s label data, not the star count alone, supplies the annual saving.
Assemble five-year and ten-year totals
Make one row per exact model and one column for every cost. A practical worksheet looks like this:

Do not present an invented repair amount as a brand statistic; use your own contingency or a written service quotation.
How to compare service and reliability without overclaiming
No controlled, current head-to-head reliability study for Voltas, LG and Blue Star is established by the available material. Therefore, a universal “most reliable” verdict would not be evidence-based. Compare practical, documented risk instead:
- Authorised service availability at your PIN code.
- Published compressor, PCB, parts and labour coverage.
- Exclusions for installation errors, voltage events, corrosion, refrigerant leaks and unauthorised repair.
- Response commitments or service channels stated in writing.
- Local installer quality, especially copper-pipe routing, insulation, vacuuming and drainage.
- Availability and quoted price of common replacement parts after the standard warranty.
Ask neighbours or building maintenance staff about response times only as local anecdotes, not as proof of brand-wide reliability. Keep the installation invoice, serial number, commissioning report and warranty registration confirmation.
Step-by-step buying procedure
- Define the load. Measure room size, sun exposure, occupancy, insulation and top-floor heat. Confirm whether 1.5 ton is appropriate before comparing brands.
- Shortlist exact models. Match capacity, split-inverter type and BEE rating year. Exclude listings that do not show a complete model code.
- Capture label data. Record ISEER, annual kWh, rated cooling and input, noise and operating-temperature limits.
- Get simultaneous quotes. Request appliance, delivery, installation, pipe length, stand, wiring, drain, stabilizer, removal and commissioning as separate line items.
- Check warranty language. Confirm compressor, PCB, parts and labour periods, exclusions, registration deadline and who pays transport or gas charges.
- Model three usage cases. Enter low, medium and high hours, months and tariff into the annual-kWh formula.
- Compute payback. Divide the installed premium by the annual bill difference; reject a premium that never recovers within your planned ownership period unless comfort or another feature justifies it.
- Inspect installation. Before signing completion, verify pipe insulation, drain slope, outdoor-unit support, electrical protection, vacuuming, leak testing and cooling operation.
- Save records. Keep the quote, invoice, model and serial numbers, label photograph, installation report and warranty confirmation.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Comparing MRP with another brand’s sale price: use transaction prices on the same date and in the same city.
- Using a different rating year: match the BEE year or explain the limitation prominently.
- Assuming rated watts equal annual consumption: use annual kWh or ISEER; rated input is only a reference point.
- Ignoring pipe length: add the same installed distance and accessories to every quote.
- Treating an extended warranty as automatically valuable: read what parts, labour, visits and exclusions it actually covers.
- Using a brand-average reliability claim: compare local authorised service evidence and documented warranty scope.
- Projecting a promotional price for ten years: separate one-time purchase price from recurring electricity, maintenance and repair costs.
- Choosing by star label alone: calculate the price premium and payback under your own usage.
Decision framework
Choose the lower-priced model when
The installed quote is genuinely lower, annual-unit differences are small, your usage is modest and you expect to move or replace the AC before an efficiency premium pays back.
Choose the more efficient model when
It has materially lower annual kWh, you run the AC for many hours or months, the tariff is high, and the calculated payback fits comfortably inside your ownership period.

Pause and get more information when
The LG price is missing, the BEE year differs, installation scope is vague, warranty coverage is only verbal, or the seller cannot provide annual units and a complete model code.
Bottom line
The current listed anchors make Voltas cheaper upfront than Blue Star by ₹2,490, while an exact LG price still needs to be obtained. That does not establish which is cheaper to run. The defensible choice comes from a same-date installed quotation, matching BEE-year label data, explicit tariff and usage assumptions, and a five- or ten-year total that includes warranty, maintenance and repair risk. Buy the model whose documented total fits your ownership period—not the brand with the lowest headline price.
