To compare viewer retention across playlists on a 24/7 YouTube stream, use YouTube’s playlist-context metrics over the same date range: average time in playlist, playlist average view duration, views per playlist start, playlist starts, and playlist estimated minutes watched. These metrics answer different questions: average time in playlist measures time spent watching playlist videos after a start, while playlist average view duration measures the average length of individual video playbacks in that playlist.
Do not treat either playlist metric as a playlist-wide audience-retention curve. YouTube’s documented retention report is video-level, while live-stream concurrency describes the stream audience rather than attributing viewing to a playlist.
Choose what “retention” means for your comparison
Before comparing playlists, decide whether you want to measure playlist-context consumption, retention within individual videos, or the audience pattern of the live stream. These are related but distinct views of performance.
| Question | Use these measures | What they tell you |
|---|---|---|
| How much viewing happens after someone starts a playlist? | Average time in playlist; views per playlist start | Time spent watching playlist videos after initiation, and video views generated per playlist start. |
| How long does each video playback last in playlist context? | Playlist average view duration | The average length of individual video playbacks within the playlist. |
| How much total playlist-context viewing occurred? | Playlist estimated minutes watched; playlist starts | Total viewing volume alongside the number of times the playlist was started. |
| Where do viewers leave a particular video? | That video’s audience-retention report | Viewer behavior by elapsed position within one video, not a comparison curve for multiple playlists. |
| How does the live audience change during a stream? | Average and peak concurrent viewers; concurrent viewers by stream position | The audience pattern for an individual live-streamed video, not playlist-attributed retention. |
Compare playlist metrics in YouTube Studio or the API
1. Select playlists and align the date range
In YouTube Studio playlist analytics, choose the playlists you want to compare and use the same date range for each. An authorized YouTube Analytics API playlist report can also be used; its playlist reports can be filtered to one playlist, and time-based reports use day or month. Record the date range and each metric’s name and scope beside your results.

2. Record starts, viewing time, and per-start behavior
For each playlist, record playlist starts, views per playlist start, average time in playlist, playlist average view duration, and playlist estimated minutes watched. Read them as complementary measures rather than substitutes:
- Playlist starts show how often viewers initiate a playlist.
- Views per playlist start indicates how many playlist video views occur per start.
- Average time in playlist estimates time spent watching videos in the playlist after it is started.
- Playlist average view duration measures average individual video playback length in playlist context.
- Playlist estimated minutes watched shows total playlist-context viewing, which reflects volume as well as viewer behavior.
3. Interpret volume and continuation together
A playlist with more estimated minutes watched may simply have more starts. Compare starts and total minutes alongside per-start measures before calling one playlist more effective at keeping viewers watching. Views per start and average time in playlist help describe continuation and duration, but neither alone explains why viewers behaved differently.

4. Keep metric scope visible
Playlist-context metrics may include videos from other channels. Aggregated video metrics, by contrast, cover only videos owned by the channel that owns the playlist. The documented web-only metrics include average time in playlist, playlist starts, and views per playlist start; account for that limitation when choosing a report or building an API-based comparison.
Use video retention reports for individual videos, not whole playlists
YouTube’s audience-retention report examines elapsed positions within a video and requires a single video ID filter in the documented API report. It is useful when you want to find where viewers drop away from a particular video, but it is not one curve that compares several playlists. For a playlist-level comparison, use playlist-context measures; for a video-level diagnosis, inspect the relevant video report.

Add live-stream audience context separately
For the 24/7 stream itself, review stream-level average view duration and average and peak concurrent viewers as context. Where useful, inspect concurrent viewers by stream position to see how the live audience changes during an individual live stream. YouTube describes the position as generally representing a single minute, and the report applies to one live-streamed video.
Keep these figures separate from playlist metrics: concurrency and stream-level duration do not, by themselves, attribute viewing to a playlist. YouTube’s live-stream documentation also states, “Data in YouTube Analytics is based on Video ID.” See YouTube Help’s See your live stream’s metrics, the YouTube Analytics metrics reference, and YouTube Analytics API channel reports. The official pages reviewed do not provide publication dates; the metric guidance here was checked on October 3, 2026, and report details may change.

Common interpretation mistakes
- Calling average time in playlist and playlist average view duration the same thing: one estimates playlist time after initiation; the other averages individual video playback lengths.
- Using total minutes as proof of stronger retention: more starts can raise total minutes, so check starts and per-start outcomes too.
- Comparing mismatched periods: align date ranges and note the range with every result.
- Treating a video-retention curve as a playlist comparison: the documented retention report is tied to a single video ID.
- Attributing live concurrency to a playlist: stream-level audience measures do not identify playlist-driven viewing on their own.
- Assuming all playlist activity is channel-owned content: playlist-context metrics can include other channels’ videos, whereas aggregated video metrics are limited to videos owned by the playlist-owning channel.
