The most defensible way to compare video-game publishers is to score three separate things: scale (net revenue and net bookings), economics (gross, operating and cash margins), and future earning power (the release and content pipeline). Use the same fiscal-period basis and accounting definitions first. Then adjust your interpretation for recurring spending, platform mix, franchise concentration, launch timing and exceptional charges. A publisher can lead in revenue while having weaker margins, or show a large operating loss because of an impairment that does not represent the cost of its current releases.
Start with the question each metric answers
No single number identifies the “best” publisher. Each measure describes a different part of the business, so put the measure beside the question it can actually answer.
Net revenue measures recognized sales
Net revenue is the amount recognized under the publisher’s accounting rules during its fiscal year. It can include full-game sales, downloadable content, virtual currency, subscriptions, advertising, licensing and other activities, depending on the company’s disclosures. Revenue is useful for measuring reported scale, but it is not a direct count of player spending in the period and it does not show when cash was collected.

Bookings are closer to the value of orders and purchases generated in a period, even when accounting recognition occurs later. Take-Two defines net bookings to include digital and physical products, licensing fees, merchandise, in-game advertising, strategy guides and publisher incentives. Because definitions vary, copy each publisher’s own definition before making a cross-company comparison. A bookings figure should never be treated as interchangeable with revenue.

Gross margin shows the economics after direct costs
Calculate gross margin as (revenue − cost of revenue) ÷ revenue. It indicates how much of each recognized revenue dollar remains after costs directly assigned to products and services. It does not include every expense required to create, market and operate a franchise.
Operating margin includes the cost of running the portfolio
Operating margin is operating income ÷ revenue. Development, sales and marketing, general and administrative costs, acquisition-related amortization, restructuring and impairments can all affect it. A high gross margin can therefore coexist with a weak or negative operating margin.
Cash generation tests earnings quality
Operating cash flow and free cash flow show whether reported results are converting into cash after working-capital movements and investment. Add cash-flow measures only when every publisher’s statement uses a comparable definition; do not substitute an adjusted cash metric for an audited one without labeling the adjustment.
Keep the comparison on one accounting basis
Before ranking companies, write down four controls: fiscal-year end, reporting currency, consolidation scope and metric definitions. Electronic Arts’ FY2025 ended March 31, while Take-Two’s fiscal year and a calendar-year publisher may cover different months. Comparing those periods as if they describe the same market conditions can distort a launch-heavy business.
Fiscal-year bridge
Display the exact year-end date beside every number. If one publisher reports a March 31 year and another reports a December 31 year, explain that the periods overlap different launches, holiday quarters and live-service seasons. A trailing-12-month bridge can help, but it must be constructed from reported quarterly figures rather than by silently relabeling fiscal years.
Currency and consolidation checks
- Keep each figure in the currency in which it was reported, or state the exchange-rate date and method used for a conversion.
- Confirm whether a figure covers the parent company, a segment or a consolidated group.
- Check whether a business was acquired, sold or held for disposal during the period.
- Record whether the number is GAAP/IFRS, non-GAAP, constant-currency or management-defined.

These figures establish reported scale for their respective fiscal periods; they do not by themselves establish superior profitability or a stronger future slate. A league table covering additional publishers, including Embracer, should be populated from each company’s latest annual filing using the same definitions before publication.
Read revenue quality, not just revenue size
Two publishers with equal revenue can have very different durability. Separate recurring consumer spending from launch-driven sales, then examine where the spending occurs.

Recurring consumer spending
Recurring consumer spending generally includes virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases and advertising. It can make revenue less dependent on a single launch, but it also increases dependence on retention, content cadence, platform policies and player engagement.
Take-Two reported that recurrent consumer spending represented 79.4% of FY2025 revenue. That is a mix statistic for the stated fiscal year, not a guarantee that future revenue will have the same composition. Use the same category definition when comparing another publisher; a company that reports “live services” may classify items differently.
Platform and channel mix
Record mobile, console and PC shares separately. Mobile economics, user-acquisition costs and advertising exposure differ from console and PC economics. Also distinguish digital from physical distribution. Take-Two reported that digital online channels accounted for 96.4% of FY2025 revenue and that mobile represented 52.2%. Those figures describe a business heavily shaped by digital retention and live operations rather than only boxed-game launches.

Do not add these percentages together: they describe overlapping dimensions of the same revenue base. A mobile purchase can also be digital and recurrent.

Separate reported margins from normalized performance
Start with the reported income statement, then identify unusual items. Never replace the reported result with an adjusted result without showing both.
Take-Two’s FY2025 gross margin
Take-Two reported FY2025 net revenue of $5,633.6 million and gross profit of $3,062.2 million. The resulting gross margin is approximately 54.3% ($3,062.2 million ÷ $5,633.6 million). That margin describes the amount left after cost of revenue; it is not an operating margin.
Why an impairment can overwhelm operating results
Take-Two recorded a $3,545.2 million goodwill impairment in FY2025. The charge drove a reported operating loss even though gross profit remained positive. Goodwill impairment is an accounting reduction in the carrying value of acquired goodwill; it does not represent a cash payment in the period, but it is still economically important because it signals that management’s valuation of an acquired business has fallen.

When comparing operating performance, present two views:

- Reported operating margin: operating income or loss divided by revenue, including every recognized charge.
- Analytical normalized margin: the reported result with specifically identified exceptional items shown separately, with the calculation and rationale disclosed.
Do not call a result “normalized” merely because it removes a disappointing expense. Check the notes for goodwill and intangible impairments, acquisition amortization, restructuring, stock compensation and capitalized development costs. Some of these recur regularly in acquisitive publishers, so removing them may overstate sustainable profitability.
Margins to collect for every publisher
- Gross profit and gross margin.
- Reported operating income or loss and operating margin.
- Any company-defined adjusted operating income, with a reconciliation to the reported figure.
- Research and development or product-development expense when separately disclosed.
- Sales and marketing expense.
- Cash flow from operations and the company’s stated free-cash-flow measure.
If a publisher does not disclose a comparable margin or adjustment, leave that field out of the ranking rather than filling it with an estimate.
Evaluate the game pipeline as a portfolio
A pipeline is more than a list of announced games. Score release cadence, franchise importance, evidence of production progress, post-launch support, platform breadth and concentration risk. Announcements are not equivalent to completed development, and dates can move.
Use a release register
For each announced title, record the expected window, platforms, internal or external development status, franchise, and the latest evidence of production progress. Add a confidence label based on the company’s wording, but do not convert an announced window into a guaranteed launch.

Weight releases by importance
Counting every title equally exaggerates the value of a small release slate. Classify titles as flagship, established annual franchise, mid-tier, mobile or experimental, then assign more weight to titles that can materially affect bookings and recurring spending. Keep the classification qualitative unless the publisher supplies a quantitative forecast.
Measure content-update capacity
Live games need a schedule of meaningful updates, not merely a launch. EA’s report of more than 600 content updates in FY2024 is evidence of operating capacity during that period. Compare the definition used: an update can range from a major expansion to a smaller event, so do not treat the count as equivalent to 600 new games.

Check diversity and timing
- Spread releases across sports, action, strategy, role-playing, casual and mobile categories where the portfolio supports it.
- Check whether several major launches cluster in one quarter, increasing marketing and quality-assurance pressure.
- Look for a balance between new intellectual property and established franchises.
- Record platform coverage and whether a title launches simultaneously or rolls out in stages.
- Distinguish a firm date from a broad window or an aspiration.
Quantify concentration and downside risk
Concentration risk answers the question “How much goes wrong if one franchise slips?” Start with the largest franchises and annual cycles, then connect them to revenue or bookings where the filing provides a share.
Franchise concentration
Calculate a disclosed share as franchise revenue or bookings ÷ total revenue or bookings. If the filing gives only qualitative dependence, label it qualitative. Take-Two’s risk disclosures specifically identify dependence on NBA 2K and Grand Theft Auto, as well as timely release, market acceptance and control of development and marketing costs. Those disclosures make concentration a central part of its risk assessment even when a single percentage is not provided.

- A delayed flagship can leave a fiscal year with high fixed development and marketing costs but no offsetting launch revenue.
- A weak reception can reduce full-game sales, add-on purchases and the active audience for future updates.
- Annual sports cycles can provide cadence but create dependence on licensing, roster relevance and repeat purchase behavior.
- Live-service portfolios can produce recurring spending yet require sustained content, server operations and community management.
- Acquisitions can expand a pipeline while introducing goodwill, integration and impairment risk.
A diversified pipeline should receive a lower single-title risk premium than one dominated by one launch. That is an analytical judgment, not a reported accounting metric; document the assumptions behind it.

Use a worksheet with one row per publisher and separate columns for period, scale, profitability, mix, pipeline and risk. Keep the raw reported numbers beside any derived score.

Score each category independently before producing an overall view. A publisher can rank first on scale, second on margin and fourth on pipeline; collapsing those differences into one number hides the trade-off.
A practical step-by-step comparison workflow
- Set the cutoff date. Write the publication date and use the latest annual filing or results release available by that date.
- Normalize periods. Record each fiscal year-end and create a bridge for companies whose years do not align.
- Copy definitions. Preserve each company’s wording for revenue, bookings, recurrent spending and adjusted profit.
- Enter reported scale. Add net revenue and net bookings without mixing currencies or segment totals with consolidated totals.
- Calculate margins. Derive gross margin and operating margin from reported statements; retain the underlying dollar amounts.
- Reconcile exceptional items. List impairments, acquisition amortization, restructuring and other adjustments before discussing normalized performance.
- Map the pipeline. Build the release register, classify importance and record update cadence and platform coverage.
- Test concentration. Calculate disclosed franchise shares and note qualitative dependence where percentages are unavailable.
- Write the conclusion by dimension. State which publisher leads in scale, margins, recurring mix and pipeline resilience, rather than naming one universal winner.
Common comparison errors and how to avoid them
Ranking revenue without checking bookings
Revenue recognition can lag or lead customer purchases. Show both measures and explain the definition.
Comparing fiscal years as calendar years
A March-ending year and a December-ending year capture different holiday and launch quarters. Put the end date in every table.

Calling gross margin an operating margin
Gross margin excludes operating expenses and impairments. Present the formulas and labels separately.
Removing every unusual expense
An acquisition-heavy publisher may incur amortization or restructuring repeatedly. Show reported results first and explain each proposed adjustment.
Treating announcements as shipped games
Use a confidence label and revisit dates at publication. The May 26, 2026 Grand Theft Auto VI date, for example, was a plan in Take-Two’s FY2025 disclosure and requires a later-status check now.

Counting updates as equivalent to launches
Content updates demonstrate operational capacity, but their scope varies. Keep update counts separate from title counts.
How to state the final verdict
Finish with a dimensional verdict: identify the scale leader using the stated revenue and bookings period; identify the margin leader only after accounting for impairments and other adjustments; describe revenue durability through recurring and platform mix; and rate pipeline resilience by weighted releases, update capacity, diversity and concentration. This format answers “who makes the most money?” without pretending that the largest publisher automatically has the best economics or safest future.
For a current league table, refresh every annual filing, recheck release dates and update the accounting-adjustment notes. Pipeline status and outlooks are volatile, while fiscal definitions and impairment treatment can change the apparent ranking even when the underlying franchises have not.
