The reliable way to compare technology-sector ETFs is to compare the index first, then normalize expense ratios, examine actual holdings and concentration, and evaluate matching NAV total returns alongside volatility and drawdowns. A fund with the lowest fee is not automatically the best fit if its index excludes companies you want, concentrates more heavily in a few stocks, or trades with wider spreads.
XLK and VGT illustrate why the label “technology ETF” is not precise enough. XLK follows the Technology Select Sector Index, a large-cap technology slice of the S&P 500, while VGT follows the broader MSCI US Investable Market Information Technology 25/50 Index. Their cited expense ratios differ by only 0.01 percentage point, yet their index coverage and portfolio construction can produce meaningfully different results. Use the process below to make the comparison on an equal, current basis.
What a technology-sector ETF comparison should measure
An ETF comparison is useful only when every fund is evaluated against the same questions and dates. Record six categories for each candidate:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Index and objective: Which securities can the benchmark own, and what classification rules determine whether a company counts as technology?
- Fees: Are you comparing the same expense-ratio measure, such as gross or net, as of the same date?
- Holdings and concentration: How many securities are held, how large are the largest positions, and what share of assets sits in the top 10?
- Market-cap and sector breadth: Is the fund limited to large companies or does it include mid- and small-cap stocks across a wider investable universe?
- Performance: Do the returns use the same NAV or market-price definition, period end date, and annualization method?
- Implementation and risk: What are the spread, trading volume, assets, tracking difference, tax considerations, volatility, and maximum drawdown?
Do not rank funds until all six categories are filled. A lower fee can be overwhelmed by a different benchmark, concentration in a few companies, trading friction, or a return series measured on incompatible terms.

Step 1: Identify the index before looking at returns
XLK’s index scope
The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) seeks to provide investment results that, before expenses, correspond generally to the price and yield performance of publicly traded equity securities of companies in the Technology Select Sector Index. That objective appears in the fund’s 2025 SEC summary prospectus. The index represents the technology sector as defined within the S&P 500, so the fund is a large-cap sector slice rather than a complete list of every US information-technology company.
VGT’s index scope
Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT) seeks to track the MSCI US Investable Market Information Technology 25/50 Index, according to Vanguard’s 2025 materials. The MSCI investable-market approach reaches beyond the largest S&P 500 technology companies and can include mid- and small-cap information-technology companies, subject to the index’s eligibility and weighting rules.
Why the names do not make the funds interchangeable
Index providers classify companies differently. A company that supplies technology to other industries may be classified outside information technology, while a communications or consumer company may not qualify for a technology-sector index at all. Read the benchmark methodology and prospectus rather than inferring coverage from a fund name, ticker, or a website category label. When comparing a fund that tracks an S&P 500 sector index with one that tracks a broad US information-technology index, expect different company eligibility, market-cap mix, rebalancing rules, and concentration.
| Comparison item | XLK | VGT | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Benchmark | Technology Select Sector Index | MSCI US Investable Market Information Technology 25/50 Index | Different index rules can produce different company coverage. |
| Portfolio universe | Technology sector within the S&P 500; large-cap emphasis | Broader US information-technology investable universe | VGT can include companies outside the large-cap S&P 500 slice. |
| Objective source and date | SEC summary prospectus, 2025 | Vanguard fund materials, 2025 | Use the latest prospectus and methodology when investing. |
| Number of holdings | Not stated in the cited documents | Not stated in the cited documents | Obtain a current holdings file; the number changes over time. |
Step 2: Normalize expense ratios and all-in costs
Use the same fee definition
An expense ratio is an annual operating expense expressed as a percentage of fund assets. Before comparing two figures, confirm whether each is a gross expense ratio or a net ratio after a contractual waiver, and record the as-of date. A promotional waiver or a temporary agreement can make a published net figure look lower than the fund’s recurring cost after the waiver expires.
The cited XLK and VGT figures
State Street Global Advisors lists XLK’s gross expense ratio at 0.08% in 2026 materials. Vanguard lists VGT’s expense ratio at 0.09% in 2025 materials. The difference is 0.01 percentage point, or one basis point. On $10,000, one basis point is approximately $1 per year before considering compounding, trading costs, taxes, or performance differences. That small gap should not decide the purchase by itself.
| Fund | Published expense ratio | Measure and date | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| XLK | 0.08% | Gross expense ratio; State Street Global Advisors, 2026 | One basis point lower than the cited VGT figure. |
| VGT | 0.09% | Expense ratio; Vanguard, 2025 | One basis point higher than the cited XLK figure. |
Costs that the expense ratio does not capture
Compare the fund’s bid-ask spread, the price you pay when buying and the price you receive when selling. A fund can have a slightly lower expense ratio but cost more to trade if its spread is wider. Also check brokerage commissions if your account charges them, the effect of large orders, and whether trading outside the most liquid market hours produces less favorable execution.

Portfolio turnover can create transaction costs inside the fund and may affect taxable distributions, even though those costs are not shown as a simple line item in the expense ratio. Tracking difference—the gap between the fund’s total return and its benchmark return after expenses—captures the combined effect of fees, trading, sampling, corporate actions, and cash management. Use several completed periods rather than one unusually favorable or unfavorable month.
Step 3: Inspect holdings and concentration
Read the full holdings file, not only the fund name
Download each issuer’s current holdings file and record the number of positions, the ten largest holdings, and each position’s percentage of net assets. Holdings change with market prices, creations and redemptions, index rebalances, and corporate actions, so attach a date to every snapshot. A fund can own hundreds of securities yet still behave like a concentrated portfolio if the largest companies account for most assets.
VGT’s documented concentration
Vanguard’s September 30, 2025 fact sheet lists VGT’s ten largest holdings as NVIDIA at 17.2%, Apple at 13.4%, Microsoft at 13.2%, Broadcom at 4.5%, Oracle at 2.4%, Palantir at 2.0%, Cisco at 1.4%, AMD at 1.3%, IBM at 1.3%, and Salesforce at 1.1%. Together, those ten holdings represented 57.9% of net assets in that snapshot.
| VGT holding | Weight on September 30, 2025 |
|---|---|
| NVIDIA | 17.2% |
| Apple | 13.4% |
| Microsoft | 13.2% |
| Broadcom | 4.5% |
| Oracle | 2.4% |
| Palantir | 2.0% |
| Cisco | 1.4% |
| AMD | 1.3% |
| IBM | 1.3% |
| Salesforce | 1.1% |
| Top-ten total | 57.9% |
That 57.9% figure is a dated snapshot, not a permanent portfolio rule. It demonstrates why the top-ten total deserves as much attention as the number of holdings. If the largest positions fall together, they can dominate the ETF’s return even when hundreds of smaller positions are positive.
Concentration questions to ask for both funds
- What percentage of assets is in the largest holding?
- What is the combined weight of the top five and top ten?
- Does a cap or diversification rule limit individual positions?
- How often are the index and portfolio rebalanced?
- Are several holdings exposed to the same economic driver, such as semiconductor demand, cloud spending, advertising, or artificial-intelligence investment?
Do not assume that two funds holding the same company have the same risk. A 15% position and a 2% position contribute very differently to portfolio volatility, and a company’s weight can change without any purchase if its share price rises faster than the rest of the portfolio.

Record the percentage allocated to large-, mid-, and small-cap companies, using the same classification convention for both funds. XLK’s S&P 500 sector construction gives it a large-cap orientation. VGT’s MSCI US Investable Market Information Technology benchmark is broader and can include mid- and small-cap companies. The exact current percentages were not stated in the cited materials, so obtain them from each fund’s latest fact sheet rather than filling the gap with an estimate.

| Market-cap or breadth item | XLK | VGT |

| Mid-cap exposure | Current percentage not stated | Current percentage not stated; broader index can include mid-cap companies |
| Small-cap exposure | Current percentage not stated | Current percentage not stated; broader index can include small-cap companies |
| Sector breadth | Technology sector as defined within the S&P 500 | US information-technology investable-market universe |
Market-cap breadth affects both opportunity and risk. Smaller companies may add exposure to emerging businesses but often have less established earnings, lower trading liquidity, and greater price volatility. A large-cap-only fund may be easier to understand and trade but can omit profitable companies that sit below the S&P 500 threshold.
Step 5: Compare performance on identical terms
Keep the return definition constant
For each ETF, use total returns that include distributions and specify whether the series is based on NAV or market price. State Street notes that ETF shares trade at market prices that can differ from NAV. Mixing XLK’s NAV return with VGT’s market-price return can make one fund appear better because of a premium or discount rather than portfolio performance.
Choose one end date and calculate one-, three-, five-, and ten-year results ending on that date. For periods longer than one year, use annualized returns. A simple annualization for a total return over n years is (ending value / starting value)^(1/n) - 1. Do not compare a five-year figure ending in June for one fund with a five-year figure ending in September for another.
Add volatility and drawdown
Return alone does not show the path an investor had to endure. Add annualized volatility for the same periods and the maximum drawdown—the largest peak-to-trough decline—using the same return series. Two funds can have similar annualized returns while one experiences deeper losses or more frequent large declines. State the measurement window and whether the calculation uses daily, weekly, or monthly observations.
Separate description from prediction
Past performance describes what happened under a particular set of valuations, interest rates, earnings, index weights, and market leadership. It is not a forecast. A recent outperformance period may have been driven by a few large holdings, and that leadership can reverse. Use historical returns to understand behavior, not to promise the next period’s result.
| Performance field | Required standard | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Return type | NAV total return for both funds, or market-price total return for both | Avoids mixing portfolio results with exchange trading effects. |
| Periods | One, three, five, and ten years where available | Shows short-, medium-, and long-term behavior. |
| End date | Identical calendar date or month-end | Prevents different market environments from being compared. |
| Annualization | Annualized for periods longer than one year | Makes horizons comparable. |
| Risk statistics | Volatility and maximum drawdown over the same windows | Shows the cost of the ride, not only the destination. |
| Benchmark gap | Tracking difference over multiple periods | Shows how closely each ETF delivered its index return. |
Step 6: Include implementation and tax considerations
Liquidity, spread, and assets
Check average daily trading volume, assets under management, quoted bid-ask spread, and the spread during the hours you normally trade. Volume is not a guarantee of execution quality, because an ETF can trade efficiently when its underlying securities are liquid and authorized participants can create or redeem shares. Use a limit order when the displayed spread or market conditions make the execution price important, and avoid assuming that a high volume on one day represents normal liquidity.

Tracking quality
Compare each fund’s NAV total return with its benchmark’s total return after accounting for the stated expense ratio. A persistent tracking difference can reflect sampling, withholding taxes on foreign income, corporate-action timing, cash balances, rebalancing costs, or other implementation effects. A single year can be noisy; inspect several periods and note any change in index methodology.

Tax treatment
Tax results depend on the account type, your country and state, holding period, distributions, and the fund’s transactions. In a taxable account, review the most recent distribution history and turnover alongside your own tax circumstances. In a tax-advantaged account, immediate distribution taxes may not apply, but withdrawals and account rules still matter. The ETF label alone does not tell you the after-tax outcome; consult current fund tax documents or a qualified tax professional for personalized advice.
Risk: why sector ETFs can swing more than the broad market
Vanguard’s 2025 fund disclosure states: “Sector ETF products are subject to sector risks and non-diversification risks, which may result in performance fluctuations that are more extreme than fluctuations in the overall stock market.” The warning applies to the decision to own a concentrated technology allocation, not only to one ticker.
Common sources of sector risk
- Valuation sensitivity: Technology shares can react sharply to changes in interest rates and expected future growth.
- Business-cycle exposure: Corporate hardware, software, and semiconductor spending can slow together.
- Regulation and competition: Antitrust actions, export controls, privacy rules, and rapid product substitution can affect several holdings at once.
- Supply-chain and production risk: Semiconductor and hardware companies may share manufacturing or component dependencies.
- Index concentration: A few very large positions can dominate daily and annual results.
Evaluate a technology ETF as a sector allocation, not as a complete replacement for a diversified stock portfolio. Decide how much sector exposure you want before choosing between a narrower large-cap index and a broader information-technology universe.

What the comparison supports
XLK is the more narrowly defined large-cap S&P 500 technology-sector option in this pair. VGT is designed for broader US information-technology exposure and, in the cited September 2025 snapshot, had substantial exposure concentrated in ten companies. The published fee gap is too small to settle the choice. The appropriate selection depends on whether you want the narrower benchmark, broader investable-market coverage, a particular concentration profile, and acceptable trading and tax characteristics.

Decision rules for different investor priorities
If your priority is the lowest stated fee
XLK’s cited 0.08% gross ratio is lower than VGT’s cited 0.09% ratio by one basis point. Treat that as a modest cost advantage, then verify whether the two figures use comparable definitions and dates. Do not pay more in spread or accept a materially different concentration profile merely to capture a one-basis-point difference.
If your priority is broad information-technology coverage
VGT’s MSCI US Investable Market Information Technology benchmark is designed for a broader US information-technology universe than XLK’s S&P 500 sector slice. Confirm the current market-cap weights and holdings before purchase, because breadth does not eliminate concentration in the largest constituents.

Compare the top holding and top-ten percentages directly. The documented VGT snapshot shows that its top ten represented 57.9% of assets, so an investor seeking less concentration must examine XLK’s current holdings rather than assume either fund is diversified enough. If both remain too concentrated, the solution may be a broader-market allocation rather than choosing between these two sector funds.
If your priority is the most comparable performance record
Build a return table with identical end dates, NAV total returns, annualization, volatility, and drawdown. Reject any comparison that mixes market-price and NAV data or uses different period ends. Explain any large tracking difference before treating it as evidence of superior portfolio management.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Choosing by ticker label: Fix it by reading the objective and benchmark methodology.
- Comparing gross with net fees: Fix it by recording the fee definition, waiver, and date.
- Using an old holdings snapshot: Fix it by downloading current holdings and labeling the date.
- Counting holdings without measuring weights: Fix it by calculating top-five and top-ten concentration.
- Mixing NAV and market-price returns: Fix it by keeping the series separate and using one definition for both funds.
- Ranking the latest one-year return: Fix it by adding multiple horizons, volatility, and drawdown; past performance is not a forecast.
- Ignoring trading friction: Fix it by checking the spread and normal execution conditions for your order size.
- Assuming sector exposure is diversified: Fix it by considering shared economic drivers and the fund’s role inside your total portfolio.
- Filling missing data with guesses: Fix it by writing “not stated” and obtaining the current issuer document.
How often to refresh the comparison
Recheck the expense ratio, benchmark documents, holdings, concentration, and market-cap mix before placing a new order. Review performance and tracking difference after each comparable reporting period, and revisit risk when an index methodology changes, a fund merges, or a major holding becomes an unusually large share of assets. A dated worksheet prevents a stale number from being mistaken for a current characteristic.
The central conclusion is straightforward: compare the index first, treat the 0.08% XLK versus 0.09% VGT fee difference as a small input, inspect concentration such as VGT’s documented 57.9% top-ten weight, and judge performance only on matching NAV or market-price terms with risk statistics attached. That process produces a defensible choice without pretending that one technology ETF is universally best.
