There is no universally “best” steel grade. Compare the exact product form and governing specification first, then verify strength, ductility, toughness, weldability, formability, corrosion behavior, heat-treatment response, availability, certification, and delivered cost. A36, A572 Grade 50, and A992 can look similar in a strength table yet be unsuitable substitutes when the shape, thickness, chemistry limits, welding procedure, or design code changes.

Start with the specification, not the grade number

A designation is incomplete without its standard, product form, dimensions, condition, and required tests. “A572 Grade 50,” for example, identifies a strength grade within ASTM A572, but the permitted chemistry and properties depend on the product covered and its thickness. “A992” is written for hot-rolled structural shapes and is used predominantly for W-shapes; it is not a generic label for every plate, bar, tube, or finished part.

Before comparing quotations or approving a substitution, record these details:

Grade Standard and principal form Minimum yield strength Tensile strength Important qualification
ASTM A36 ASTM A36 structural carbon steel; applications and forms depend on the purchase specification 36 ksi 58 ksi A general structural grade; confirm the permitted product form and thickness.
ASTM A572 Grade 50 ASTM A572 high-strength, low-alloy structural steel; product-form requirements apply 50 ksi 65 ksi Higher minimum strength than A36; chemistry, welding, and thickness requirements still govern.
ASTM A992 ASTM A992/A992M hot-rolled structural shapes, predominantly W-shapes 50 ksi 65 ksi Similar strength to A572 Grade 50, with tighter chemistry and mechanical-property controls, including a maximum yield-to-tensile ratio and a carbon-equivalent limit.

ASTM A36: when a general structural grade is enough

A36 provides the lowest of the three tabulated minimum strengths: 36 ksi yield and 58 ksi tensile strength in the AISC comparison. It can be appropriate when the design does not benefit from a higher-strength material, when the specified product is readily available, or when fabrication requirements favor a conventional carbon-steel grade. The designation alone does not establish impact toughness, corrosion resistance, or suitability for a particular welded detail. The project specification and the applicable product standard must supply those requirements.

ASTM A572 Grade 50: more strength, with a form and thickness check

A572 Grade 50 raises the cited minimum yield strength to 50 ksi and tensile strength to 65 ksi. That increase can reduce required area or weight in a strength-controlled member, but it does not automatically reduce the size of a connection, improve fatigue life, or make a thinner section available. Verify the grade for the exact plate, shape, bar, or other product ordered, and check the design code’s requirements for ductility, slenderness, connection design, and welding.

ASTM A992: the usual choice for modern W-shapes

AISC describes A992 as a hot-rolled-shape specification used predominantly for W-shapes and states that it should be specified for all W-shapes used today. Its nominal strength values are similar to A572 Grade 50, but its tighter chemistry and mechanical controls make behavior more consistent for structural design and fabrication. The maximum yield-to-tensile ratio helps preserve a margin between yielding and tensile rupture; the carbon-equivalent limit supports more predictable weldability. Neither control eliminates the need to qualify the welding procedure or check the actual mill certificate.

Bridge and weathering steels require a separate comparison

ASTM A709/A709M covers bridge steels and, in the current 2026 listing, includes Grades 36, 50, 50S, 50W, 50CR, QST 50, QST 50S, QST 65, and QST 70. The “W” and “CR” weathering grades are intended to provide enhanced atmospheric-corrosion resistance compared with conventional grades, but their performance depends on the exposure, detailing, drainage, and whether the environment permits a protective patina to form.

A709 contains substitution restrictions. A bridge contract therefore cannot be treated like an open-ended choice among materials with the same nominal yield strength. Check the owner’s bridge specification, fracture or impact requirements, welding provisions, coating system, and the permitted grade substitutions before ordering. A weathering grade is not a license to omit paint in every environment: persistent moisture, deicing salts, marine exposure, crevices, and poorly drained details can prevent reliable patina development.

Manufacturing grades: chemistry, hardenability, and the finished part

Construction grades are generally selected around a structural design specification. A machine part is selected around the properties that remain after processing. SAE J412 (2026) describes itself as a guide to selecting steel types and grades. It distinguishes steels commonly purchased by chemical-composition requirements from HSLA steels commonly purchased by mechanical properties. SAE notes that HSLA properties are obtained in the as-rolled condition and are not intended for purchaser heat treatment.

SAE J413 (2024) frames the next decision differently: once a steel is selected that will through-harden in the relevant section size, the engineer chooses finished-part tensile properties based on service stresses. In practice, compare the following before choosing a bar or forging grade:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Chemistry and hardenability: alloy content and hardenability determine whether the center of the actual section reaches the required structure during quenching.
  • Section size: a grade that hardens through a small shaft may not harden through a large gear, pin, or block.
  • Heat-treatment route: normalize, quench and temper, carburize, induction harden, or leave as-rolled only when the specification and design allow it.
  • Final hardness and toughness: strength without adequate impact resistance can create a brittle failure risk, especially at low temperature or in notched details.
  • Machinability and distortion: alloy content, hardness, residual stress, and quench severity affect tool life, dimensional change, and scrap risk.
  • Weldability and repair: carbon equivalent, preheat, interpass temperature, hydrogen control, and post-weld treatment may govern whether welding is practical.
  • Fatigue and wear: cyclic stress concentration, contact pressure, surface treatment, and finish can matter more than nominal tensile strength.
  • Inspection and certification: specify heat number traceability, hardness mapping, ultrasonic or magnetic-particle inspection, and acceptance limits when the part’s consequence of failure warrants them.

Do not treat a familiar automotive or machinery number as interchangeable with a construction designation. SAE, ASTM, and other systems can use similar-looking numbers for different chemistry, product forms, and test regimes.

Compare grades on the properties the part actually needs

Yield and tensile strength

Yield strength controls the onset of permanent deformation in many designs; tensile strength describes the maximum engineering stress before necking and rupture in a tensile test. Use the values required by the governing design code and the actual thickness or section. A higher minimum yield value may allow a lighter member, but connection limit states, buckling, fatigue, deflection, bearing, and fracture can still control the design.

Ductility and notch toughness

Ductility allows redistribution and forming without sudden fracture. Notch toughness measures resistance to crack growth under specified conditions and is often expressed through an impact test at a stated temperature. Never compare “toughness” as a label alone: identify the test method, specimen orientation, temperature, absorbed-energy requirement, and thickness applicability. A bridge or low-temperature structure may need an impact requirement that a general structural purchase does not.

Weldability and carbon equivalent

Weldability depends on chemistry, thickness, restraint, hydrogen, heat input, joint design, and procedure control. A992’s carbon-equivalent limit and tighter chemistry improve predictability, but the welding engineer still needs a qualified procedure and the mill certificate. For other grades, calculate or verify the carbon-equivalent method required by the project and set preheat and interpass limits accordingly.

ASTM A400 cautions that steels with a maximum carbon content of 0.40% or more, or hardness above HB 293 after heat treatment, are not recommended for welding applications. That warning is not a universal pass/fail rule for every repair, but it is a clear reason to stop and obtain engineering review rather than weld a heat-treated part on the assumption that a high-strength label makes it safe.

Formability and fabrication route

Bending, flanging, punching, cold drawing, and deep forming impose different demands. Higher strength can increase springback and forming force. Check minimum bend radius, edge quality, grain direction, plate thickness, and whether hot forming changes the supplied properties. A grade suitable for a rolled beam may be a poor choice for a deeply formed bracket or a cold-headed fastener.

Corrosion and weathering

Strength grade and corrosion performance are separate decisions. Ordinary structural steel generally needs a coating, corrosion allowance, or controlled environment. Weathering grades can reduce atmospheric-corrosion rate under suitable wet-dry cycles, but they require compatible detailing and exposure. Chlorides, continuously wet surfaces, crevices, and buried or immersed service can defeat the intended weathering mechanism. Specify coating preparation, thickness, repair, inspection, and maintenance instead of assuming that a stronger grade is automatically more durable.

Heat-treatment response and section-size limits

For a machined part, ask whether the required hardness and toughness are achievable at the center of the largest section, not just on a surface coupon. Hardenability, quench medium, agitation, transfer time, tempering temperature, and distortion controls all matter. SAE J412’s distinction is especially important for HSLA products: if the properties are supplied in the as-rolled condition and the material is not intended for purchaser heat treatment, a later hardening cycle can invalidate the expected performance.

Availability, certification, and delivered cost

Price per ton is only one component of cost. Include minimum order quantity, cutting and forming, welding consumables, preheat and inspection, coating, heat treatment, machining allowance, scrap, freight, and schedule risk. A grade that is nominally cheaper can cost more if it requires a special mill run or extensive processing.

AISC advises checking producer listings and rolling schedules because some structural shapes are rolled periodically and others may require accumulated orders. Ask the supplier to confirm the exact section, thickness, length, grade, edition, test requirements, and delivery date in writing. Require a traceable mill test report and reconcile its heat number with the material received.

When a higher-strength substitution is acceptable

“Higher strength” is not a complete engineering justification. A substitution is acceptable only when the responsible engineer and the governing specification permit it and all affected limit states remain satisfactory. Review:

  • Design resistance, buckling, deflection, fatigue, fracture, bearing, and connection requirements.
  • Ductility, elongation, notch toughness, and any impact-test temperature.
  • Weld procedure qualification, carbon equivalent, preheat, hydrogen control, and heat input.
  • Forming limits, springback, machining behavior, and dimensional tolerances.
  • Coating compatibility, corrosion environment, and weathering or paint requirements.
  • Availability of the exact product form, thickness, length, and certified test results.
  • Contract language, design-code permissions, and any bridge or owner-specific substitution restrictions.

For example, A992 and A572 Grade 50 share the 50 ksi/65 ksi values in the cited AISC comparison, but A992’s shape-specific specification and tighter controls do not make every A572 product an equivalent W-shape. Likewise, replacing A36 plate with a higher-strength grade can alter welding, forming, toughness, and connection behavior even if the member’s calculated stress is lower than the new yield strength.

A practical grade-selection workflow

  1. Define the duty: list loads, temperature range, cyclic exposure, corrosion, wear, forming, machining, welding, and required service life.
  2. Freeze the product form: identify the exact shape, plate, bar, tube, fastener, forging, or finished part and its maximum section or thickness.
  3. Select the governing standard: write the full ASTM, SAE, bridge, or project specification and edition on the drawing or purchase order.
  4. Set property requirements: specify yield, tensile, elongation, toughness test and temperature, hardness, and any fatigue or wear acceptance criteria.
  5. Check processing: confirm forming route, welding procedure, heat treatment, machining sequence, coating, and inspection plan.
  6. Check supply: obtain written confirmation of section availability, rolling schedule, minimum order, lead time, certificates, and traceability.
  7. Review substitutions formally: compare every affected design and manufacturing requirement; obtain the engineer’s approval before changing the purchase order.
  8. Verify receipt: match heat numbers, dimensions, condition, markings, and mill test results to the order before fabrication.

Examples of the decision in practice

W-shaped building column or beam

Begin with the project’s structural code and the W-shape designation. A992 is the normal starting point for modern W-shapes because AISC identifies it as the specification that should be used for all W-shapes today. Then check the member’s thickness, connection design, fire or coating system, toughness requirements, and delivery schedule. Do not substitute a different product form merely because its table lists 50 ksi yield strength.

Plate girder or heavily welded frame

Compare the permitted plate specification, thickness-dependent properties, carbon equivalent, toughness, welding procedure, and inspection requirements. A572 Grade 50 may reduce required area relative to A36, but the engineer must verify weldability, connection details, fatigue category, and availability of the required plate size. If atmospheric corrosion is a major concern, evaluate the appropriate A709 weathering option and the project’s substitution rules rather than adding a weathering label informally.

Machined shaft, pin, or gear

Define the finished hardness, core toughness, surface wear, fatigue duty, and largest section. Use the SAE selection guidance to distinguish a chemistry-purchased steel from an HSLA grade supplied for as-rolled properties. Confirm that the selected steel will through-harden in the actual section size, choose the heat-treatment route, establish distortion allowances, and specify hardness and inspection after treatment. A construction grade with a higher nominal yield value is not a shortcut to the required part performance.

What to put on the purchase order

A useful order identifies the complete material requirement rather than a bare grade number. Include the standard and edition, product form, dimensions and tolerances, supplied condition, minimum mechanical properties, impact-test method and temperature when required, chemical limits or carbon-equivalent rule, heat-treatment instructions, surface and coating requirements, nondestructive tests, certificate and traceability requirements, quantity, cut lengths, and delivery date. State whether substitutions are prohibited or require written engineering approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom-line selection rule

Choose the grade that satisfies the governing specification and the complete service and manufacturing envelope—not the grade with the largest yield-strength number. For common building W-shapes, start with ASTM A992; for other structural products, compare the exact A36 or A572 Grade 50 product requirements and thickness. For bridges, evaluate the applicable A709 grade and its corrosion, toughness, and substitution provisions. For machine parts, select by chemistry, hardenability, heat treatment, final hardness and toughness, and process capability. In every case, confirm availability and the mill certificate before treating a proposed substitution as equivalent.
