Compare smartphone battery life by looking at measured runtime for the activities you actually do—not by treating a larger mAh figure as a promise of more hours. Use results from the same test publisher and protocol, inspect the individual workload results as well as any combined score, and then use capacity as context for understanding the result.
Why battery capacity alone cannot predict runtime
Battery capacity, usually listed in milliamp-hours (mAh), is one input into how long a phone lasts. Runtime also depends on how efficiently its hardware and software use energy. The IEA 4E EDNA mobile-device study describes endurance as related both to battery size and to device efficiency; it discusses dividing endurance by capacity as a way to normalize for battery size, not as a complete measure of phone quality. IEA 4E EDNA’s mobile-device study was published in 2022.
That is why capacity is most useful after you compare runtime. A phone with a larger battery may last longer, but the mAh figure alone cannot establish how it will perform in browsing, video, gaming, or your own daily mix.
Choose runtime results that match your use
Battery life changes with the workload. A phone that lasts a long time in video playback may perform differently during gaming, camera use, calls, or web browsing. For a typical mix, a combined score can be useful—but only after you understand what activities it combines and whether it includes idle time.

- Mostly watch video? Compare video-streaming or playback results.
- Play graphics-heavy games? Give gaming results more weight.
- Use your phone for a mix of tasks? Consider a combined score, then inspect its component results and weighting.
- Leave your phone idle for long stretches? Check whether the test includes standby; an active-use score will not reflect those idle periods.
How the published test methods differ
Two respected publications can report different runtime figures because they test different activities under different conditions. Treat results as directly comparable only when the publisher and methodology match; cross-publication comparisons are approximate unless their protocols are demonstrably aligned.
| Method | Activities and score | Selected test conditions | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| GSMArena Battery Life Test 2.0 | Calls over 4G/VoLTE, interactive web browsing, YouTube streaming, and a repeated 3D game. Its adjustable Active Use Score combines these, with the default mix slightly emphasizing web and video. | Screen-on tests at 200 nits, Wi-Fi connected, airplane mode enabled, Bluetooth off, location services on, and volume at 15%; calls use a 4G network. | The score estimates continuous active use and excludes standby. Introduced in November 2023. See GSMArena’s Battery Life Test 2.0 methodology and its announcement of the change from the former Endurance Rating. |
| Android Authority battery testing | Web browsing, video playback, camera capture, video recording, video calls, and graphics-benchmark data. | Automated tasks; displays calibrated to 300 nits. The method drains 7% of the battery per task and extrapolates maximum hours. | This is a different protocol from GSMArena’s, so its runtime figures are not direct equivalents. The methodology page does not state a publication date in the retrieved material. See Android Authority’s testing methodology. |
GSMArena explains that a person attempting the same activities may get different runtimes because network environment, background processes, ambient temperature, and available light affect battery drain. Its methodology article, dated 8 November 2023, is describing variables that also matter when you use a phone outside a lab.

A practical way to compare two phones
- List your main activities. Decide whether calls, browsing, streaming, gaming, camera use, or standby matter most to you.
- Find results from the same publisher. Compare phones tested with the same method rather than ranking figures from different labs as if their conditions matched.
- Read the protocol. Note brightness, network setup, settings, task duration, and whether the result represents active use, standby, or both.
- Check both the combined score and its components. A strong aggregate can conceal weak endurance in the activity you care about. GSMArena lets readers adjust the Active Use Score mix; Android Authority publishes several workload-specific results.
- Use mAh as context. Once you have compared relevant runtime results, capacity can help explain part of the difference. Runtime per mAh is a rough efficiency lens, not a definitive score.
- Allow for real-world variation. A controlled test is for comparing phones under stated conditions, not a promise of your exact screen-on time or days between charges.
Why your own phone may last longer or shorter
Real-world runtime depends on settings and conditions that can differ from a published test. Apple identifies screen brightness, background activity, coverage, app behavior, connectivity, and battery capacity as relevant factors; it also notes that Wi-Fi uses less battery power than cellular networks. Apple’s battery-life guidance describes Low Power Mode as reducing or disabling some settings and features.
Google’s Android guidance recommends reducing brightness, restricting apps with high battery use, using Battery Saver, and limiting power-intensive activities such as navigation, tethering, streaming, GPS, and graphics-heavy games. Heat can accelerate battery drain. Exact settings and available features vary by device and software version. See Google’s Android battery-saving guidance.

- Pocket-Sized Portability: At only 5.5" x 2.6" x 0.5" and just 0.5 lbs, this slim, lightweight battery is built to go anywhere. Its compact design fits easily in your pocket, so you can stay powered and comfortable wherever the day takes you.
- High 10,000mAh Capacity: Reliably charge most smartphones 2-3 times or a tablet once, providing ample power for a full day out or during travel.
- Triple-Port Fast Charging: Two USB-A ports and one USB-C port allow you to charge up to three devices at the same time. Whether you're powering a phone, tablet, earbuds, or other small devices, you get fast, convenient charging without waiting for an available outlet.
- Comprehensive Safety System: Features advanced protection against over-charging, over-discharging, over-current, over-voltage, and short circuits for safe charging of all your connected devices.
These factors can help explain why your phone’s runtime differs from a lab result, but they do not replace a controlled comparison when choosing between models.
If you need more runtime away from an outlet
A USB-C power bank can give you an opportunity to recharge when your use outlasts a phone’s per-charge endurance. It does not improve the phone’s own battery life or energy efficiency.
