Scroll through the content you need to test, let its images load, verify that they loaded successfully, and only then capture and compare screenshots. A full-page capture includes the page’s scrollable area, but it does not guarantee that scrolling-triggered images were requested or rendered.

Why lazy-loaded images go missing

With loading="lazy", a browser can postpone fetching an offscreen image until it estimates the image is near the viewport. Pages can also trigger loading with application code, such as an Intersection Observer. As a result, the page’s load event alone does not establish that images further down the page are ready. See MDN’s lazy-loading overview.

Full-page capture and lazy loading solve different problems: full-page capture sets the screenshot’s scope; scrolling and readiness checks prepare the page. A screenshot tool may capture content beyond the current viewport without causing the page’s own loading behavior to run for every image.

Prepare a reliable comparison

  1. Set the test conditions. Navigate to the exact route, establish the intended application state and use the same browser, viewport, device scale, fonts, and test data for the baseline and new capture.
  2. Trigger loading through the content in scope. Scroll down in increments, pausing enough for the page’s own observers and requests to run. If the page scrolls inside a nested container, scroll that container rather than only the window. There is no universal increment or delay that guarantees readiness: observer roots, margins, and request timing vary by site.
  3. Check relevant images explicitly. For ordinary <img> elements, check both complete and naturalWidth > 0. complete can also be true when an image is broken. Exclude intentionally empty placeholders or handle known expected failures explicitly.
  4. Capture the right scope. Use a full-page screenshot for document-wide layout and content, a viewport screenshot for the initial view, or an element screenshot for a component. Keep that scope and dimensions consistent with the approved baseline.
  5. Review the difference before changing the baseline. Work out whether a mismatch comes from an image that never loaded, an intended content change, a real visual regression, or rendering-environment drift.

Example: prepare a page in Playwright

This JavaScript example illustrates the sequence for a page whose content is in the main document. Adapt the route, scope, timeout, and scrolling to the application; it is not a universal recipe. The readiness check intentionally fails if any document image is broken, so production tests should scope it to the images under test and account for known placeholders or expected failures.

// Navigate and establish the same application state used by the baseline.

// Trigger viewport-based loading throughout the document.
const height = await page.locator('body').evaluate(el => el.scrollHeight);
for (let y = 0; y < height; y += 600) {
  await page.evaluate(y => window.scrollTo(0, y), y);
  await page.waitForTimeout(100);
}
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollTo(0, 0));

// Require successful completion for all document images.
await page.waitForFunction(() =>
  [...document.images].every(img => img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0)
);

// Capture and compare after preparation.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ fullPage: true });

The fixed pause in the scroll loop gives scroll-triggered code an opportunity to run; it is not proof that network requests have finished. In a production test, prefer condition-based waits tailored to the page. CSS background images and content inserted only after scrolling need application-specific checks. For nested scrolling, enumerate and scroll the relevant container, then verify the images in that region.

Stabilize the visual diff without hiding real changes

Playwright’s screenshot assertions retry until two consecutive screenshots match, which can help avoid comparing during an unstable capture. That does not trigger every lazy image or prove successful loading; keep the explicit readiness step.

Playwright notes: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery or power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Keep those conditions stable where possible, and review any intended baseline changes. Playwright supports comparison options such as a maximum differing-pixel threshold; choose tolerance based on expected rendering noise and the risk of overlooking a meaningful change, not to silence an unexplained diff.

Choose comparison scope and conditions

  • Document regression: prepare the page and capture full-page so the comparison covers the scrollable document.
  • Initial-view regression: capture the viewport without scrolling if the test is specifically about what a visitor first sees.
  • Component regression: capture the target element and prepare only the assets and state relevant to it.
  • Responsive or browser variants: compare the same viewport, browser project, and application state first. Compare other variants as separate cases.

When interpreting a diff, distinguish missing requests from changes in content, layout, image rendering, or environment. A threshold is a comparison policy, not evidence that a mismatch is harmless.

Troubleshooting missing or inconsistent images

  • The image is still absent in the screenshot: confirm that the scroll reached the actual loading region, including any nested scroller, and wait for the site’s request or application-specific ready state.
  • The readiness check times out: identify which image failed. It may be a broken URL, a deliberately empty placeholder, or an asset whose loading is controlled by site code. Scope the check or explicitly handle the expected case rather than treating complete alone as success.
  • The image check passes but the screenshot lacks imagery: the page may use CSS background images or insert content through application code. Add a check for the relevant element or application state; document.images covers image elements, not every way a page can display an image.
  • Repeated captures differ: check that the page and assets have settled, then stabilize browser, OS, fonts, viewport, device scale, and test data. Screenshot retry behavior helps capture stability but cannot fix inconsistent application state.
  • The baseline changes across viewport sizes: treat each viewport as its own comparison case. Responsive layouts may load or arrange content differently, so do not compare unlike dimensions as if they were the same test.

For a one-call capture, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its full-page capture can load lazy images; it also offers selector-based capture and wait options. Use the API with a URL and your access key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/products -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a page’s load event mean its lazy images are ready?

No. Offscreen images may not be requested until scrolling brings them near the viewport, and a page may use application-level loading logic.

Does taking a full-page screenshot trigger lazy loading?

Not necessarily. Full-page capture defines the captured area; prepare the page by triggering its loading behavior and checking readiness first.
