To compare screenshots of a website with a long table, capture both page versions under the same browser, viewport, zoom, and page state. Use a full-page capture to review overall layout, or compare the table in aligned row-sized sections when one tall image is hard to inspect. A visual diff reveals appearance changes; verify cell values separately with text or DOM checks.

Choose the capture that makes the table readable

Start with the question you need to answer: did the page layout change, did the table’s appearance change, or did its data change?

  • Full-page screenshots: Use these for an overview of page structure and changes around the table. Playwright supports full-page captures as well as screenshot buffers that can be sent to image-diff processing. Playwright’s screenshot documentation describes these options.
  • Table-element screenshots: Capture just the table when the whole element fits and its text remains legible. Playwright supports element screenshots, which can keep unrelated page content out of the comparison. See the screenshot documentation.
  • Aligned sections: If the table is too tall to inspect comfortably in one image, compare corresponding row-sized sections. This is a practical manual technique, not a special long-table procedure prescribed by Playwright. Keep each section’s row boundaries consistent between versions.

A full-page image gives context; a table-only capture or matching sections make details easier to examine. You can use both when you need to check the page’s overall layout and individual rows.

Make the two captures comparable

Visual differences can come from the capture environment rather than a website change. Playwright warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Its guidance is to generate and compare baselines in the same environment. Read Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

For a fair before-and-after comparison, keep these conditions the same:

  • Browser and version, operating system, and capture setup.
  • Viewport width and height, browser zoom, and device scale where applicable.
  • Page state: the same route, scroll position or capture scope, filters, expanded rows, and other relevant controls.
  • Data and timing, where possible. Wait for table data, fonts, and images to finish loading before capturing.

If your goal is browser compatibility, capture each browser as its own comparison rather than treating browser-specific rendering changes as evidence of a site regression. Percy’s Playwright integration supports browser-specific snapshots; consult BrowserStack’s Percy Playwright integration documentation for its workflow.

Compare appearance without mistaking noise for a defect

A pixel diff can expose changed wrapping, alignment, borders, spacing, or movement. Review the highlighted regions against the actual page: small rendering variations may create noise, while a permissive threshold can hide a real defect.

For automated checks, Playwright Test compares screenshots with reference images and supports configuration such as pixel allowances and color thresholds. Its screenshot assertion captures repeatedly until two consecutive screenshots match, and a custom stylesheet can hide volatile content from the capture. See Playwright’s visual comparison documentation and the screenshot assertion API.

  1. Capture the old and new page with the same settings and stable data.
  2. Compare the full page, table element, or matching row sections—whichever best fits the review.
  3. Inspect each diff highlight in context. Confirm whether it reflects a meaningful layout or styling change.
  4. Set an explicit threshold or pixel allowance only after reviewing the observed differences. Avoid loosening it merely to make noisy comparisons pass.
  5. Update the reference image only when the visual change is intentional and has been reviewed.

Check table values separately from pixels

A visual match does not prove that every cell contains the correct value. Pair image comparisons with text snapshots or DOM-level assertions when data correctness matters. Playwright documents both image and text snapshot comparisons; use the image check for appearance and a text or DOM check for the content you expect. See Playwright’s snapshot guidance.

For example, a screenshot can reveal that a column became too narrow and its values now wrap, while a text assertion can check that a particular row still contains the expected value. These answer different questions; use both when the review requires both.

Choose a workflow for the review

Approach Best for What to account for
Manual screenshots, side by side or in an image-diff viewer Occasional reviews and quick investigation Capture settings and page state must be kept consistent by the reviewer; split tall tables into aligned sections if needed.
Playwright Test screenshot baselines Repeatable checks within a test workflow Use a consistent capture environment, stabilize volatile content, review diffs, and update baselines intentionally.
Percy with Playwright Hosted visual review or browser-specific snapshots Follow the integration’s setup and browser-specific snapshot workflow in Percy’s Playwright documentation.

Pick based on how often you review changes, whether you need automated baseline comparisons, which browsers matter, and whether cell content needs its own assertions. There is no published statistic in the cited documentation that establishes one approach as universally more accurate.

Troubleshoot misleading or unusable diffs

  • The diff flags most of the page: Check that browser, operating system, viewport, zoom, device scale, and page state match. Rendering can vary across environments.
  • Rows appear shifted: Check whether the table data, fonts, images, or other content loaded at different times. Stabilize data and wait for page assets before capture.
  • Animated or changing content creates noise: Use a stable test state or Playwright’s custom screenshot stylesheet to exclude volatile regions.
  • The whole-table image is hard to review: Capture the table element if it fits legibly, or compare corresponding row-sized sections with matching boundaries.
  • A visual check passes but a value may be wrong: Add a text snapshot or DOM assertion for the relevant cell; image comparison alone checks appearance.
  • You are comparing different browsers: Treat them as separate browser-specific comparisons, since browser and operating-system rendering differences can affect appearance.
  • A reference image changed after an intentional redesign: Review the diff first, then update the baseline so the new appearance becomes the reference.
