The fairest comparison uses annualized total return after inflation, measured over the same dates and currency, against a benchmark that represents the same risk exposure. Then add volatility, maximum drawdown, liquidity, credit and interest-rate risk, fees, taxes, and diversification value. A higher historical return is not automatically the better investment.

What a valid asset-class comparison must control

Comparing a stock price with a bond coupon or a gold quote can produce a misleading ranking. Each number may represent a different currency, period, income assumption, fee level, or risk exposure. Define the comparison before collecting returns.

  • Geography and currency: State the market (for example, U.S. or India) and whether returns are measured in local currency or converted to a common currency. Currency movements can dominate the result for an overseas investor.
  • Exact dates: Use the same start and end dates, including whether the dates are market closes. A result covering five calendar years is not interchangeable with one covering five years and three months.
  • Series type: Identify a price index, total-return index, fund NAV, spot price, futures series, or an individual security. Price-only data omit income.
  • Distribution treatment: Say whether dividends, bond interest, and fund distributions are reinvested. A total-return series normally assumes reinvestment; a price series does not.
  • Costs and taxes: Decide whether the comparison is gross, net of fund expenses and trading costs, or after the investor’s taxes. Use the same convention for every asset class.

FINRA defines total return as gain or loss in value plus investment earnings (FINRA, Key Concepts: Return and Rate of Return). That definition is the starting point for an apples-to-apples calculation.

Step 1: Measure total return, not just price change

Total return combines the change in market value with cash earned while holding the investment. For an investment that starts at V0, ends at V1, and pays distributions whose reinvested value is included, the holding-period total return is:

Total return = (ending value ÷ beginning value) − 1

Stocks

Include dividends. A stock that rises 40% but pays no dividend has a 40% price return; a stock that rises 35% and pays dividends has a higher total return if those dividends are included. For diversified exposure, use a broad-market or large-cap total-return index rather than selecting a single winning company.

Bonds

Include coupon interest, reinvestment of that interest when applicable, and the change in the bond’s market price. Selling before maturity can produce a gain or loss even when every coupon was paid. Bond investors face interest-rate, credit, reinvestment, inflation, and liquidity risks. A bond is a loan to the issuer with periodic interest and principal repayment at maturity, subject to those risks (SEBI, Investment Asset Classes).

Gold

Gold generally has no contractual coupon or dividend. Compare a clearly defined spot-price series or a gold investment’s total return, then subtract storage, insurance, fund expense, bid-ask spread, and trading costs where they apply. A gold fund’s return will not exactly equal the spot price because of those costs and tracking differences.

Funds and other pooled investments

Use the fund’s total return after its stated expense ratio and distributions, and disclose whether trading commissions, platform charges, or taxes are included. Do not compare a gross index return with an investor’s net fund return without labeling the difference.

Step 2: Annualize periods so they are comparable

A five-year gain cannot be ranked directly against a one-year gain. Convert each holding-period result to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR), the constant yearly rate that would produce the observed ending value:

FINRA recommends annualizing a multi-year result before comparing it with a one-year result (FINRA, Key Concepts: Return and Rate of Return).

Worked calculation

  1. Suppose a hypothetical investment grows from 1,000 to 1,300 over five years, with all income already reinvested.
  2. Compute the growth multiple: 1,300 ÷ 1,000 = 1.30.
  3. Raise it to the reciprocal of five: 1.300.2.
  4. Subtract one. The CAGR is approximately 5.4% per year.

This is an illustration of the method, not a historical return for any asset class. Use the same dates and formula for every candidate.

Step 3: Show nominal and real returns

A nominal return is the percentage increase in the account balance before inflation. A real return estimates the change in purchasing power. For a matching inflation rate, calculate:

Real return = (1 + nominal return) ÷ (1 + inflation rate) − 1

For example, a 7% nominal return during 3% inflation is about a 3.9% real return, not 4% exactly, because the rates compound.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission cites long-run stock-market returns of about 10% nominal and roughly 6%–7% real after inflation. The page does not state a year for those figures, so treat them as a historical illustration rather than a forecast (SEC, Roadmap: Risk). Your own real return should use the inflation index relevant to your country, spending pattern, and measurement dates.

Step 4: Match each asset with an appropriate benchmark

A benchmark should be broad enough to represent the exposure, investable in principle, and calculated with the same return convention as the investment being tested.

Asset or exposure Benchmark approach What to match Common mismatch
Stocks Broad total-market or large-cap total-return index Country, market-cap segment, currency, dividends, and whether returns are net or gross Comparing one volatile stock with a diversified index
Bonds Bond index with comparable credit quality and duration Government or corporate status, maturity or duration, currency, yield convention, and reinvestment Comparing short-term government bonds with long-term high-yield debt
Gold Defined gold spot series or gold investment total-return series Currency, physical versus fund exposure, storage or fund costs, and trading hours Using an uncosted spot quote to represent a fee-charging fund
Cash and cash equivalents Relevant short-term government bill or cash-equivalent rate Term, credit quality, currency, and reinvestment rate Using a fixed historical rate for a changing cash yield
Real estate Investable property or listed real-estate total-return index suited to the exposure Listed versus private holdings, leverage, geography, property type, income, and valuation frequency Treating a private appraisal series as directly comparable with a daily-priced stock index
Commodities Clearly specified commodity index or the relevant physical-asset series Contract roll costs, collateral income, currency, and the exact commodities included Assuming a futures index equals a spot-price return
Private equity Only a methodology-matched private-market benchmark Valuation lag, fees, leverage, cash-flow timing, survivorship, and illiquidity Ranking a smoothed private estimate beside a liquid daily index without adjustment

The SEC notes that stocks, bonds, cash, real estate, commodities, and private equity have different characteristics and risks; they should not be treated as interchangeable categories (SEC, Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing).

Compare the risks behind the return

Put the same risk measures beside every return number. A useful comparison table has these columns:

Measure How to calculate or describe it Why it changes the decision
Volatility Standard deviation of periodic total returns, with the interval stated Shows how widely results varied, but does not describe the path or permanent loss by itself
Maximum drawdown Largest peak-to-trough decline during the period Tests whether an investor could tolerate the worst observed loss
Worst period Worst calendar year or rolling period, clearly labeled Reveals concentration of downside that an average can hide
Recovery time Time from a peak to a return to that peak, if recovery occurred Important when withdrawals or a near-term purchase are planned
Income yield Dividends, coupons, or distributions divided by the stated base Separates cash generation from price appreciation; state whether the yield is trailing, forward, or distribution-based
Liquidity Trading frequency, bid-ask spread, settlement, and ability to sell at a known price Illiquid assets may require discounts or long notice periods
Credit and default risk Issuer ability to pay interest and principal Material for corporate, sovereign, and structured debt; not the same as stock-market volatility
Interest-rate sensitivity Duration or another stated sensitivity measure Longer-duration bonds generally react more to rate changes than shorter-duration bonds
Currency exposure Local-currency return, hedged return, or unhedged converted return Exchange rates can add or subtract from the investor’s result
Inflation sensitivity Historical real return and behavior during inflationary periods Nominal gains can still reduce purchasing power
Fees and taxes Expense ratio, commissions, spreads, custody, storage, and applicable tax treatment Small recurring costs compound; tax rules differ by country, account, holding period, and income type
Correlation and diversification Correlation with the rest of the portfolio over the same period An asset with a lower standalone return may reduce portfolio drawdowns

What each major asset class represents

Stocks: highest growth potential with substantial loss risk

Stocks represent ownership in companies. The SEC describes stocks as historically the riskiest of the three major categories of stocks, bonds, and cash, but also as having the greatest growth potential. Its investor guide says large-company stocks have lost money on average about one out of every three years, a historical characterization rather than a prediction (SEC, Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing). Compare a diversified stock index with a similarly diversified alternative, and report both the total return and the path of losses.

Bonds: contractual income with rate and credit trade-offs

A bond typically promises periodic interest and repayment of principal at maturity, but the market value changes before maturity. Higher coupons or yields can compensate for greater credit, duration, liquidity, or inflation risk. A bond held to maturity and a bond fund sold after a rate increase can have very different investor outcomes, so state the holding and exit assumptions.

Gold: a non-income asset used for diversification or a hedge

SEBI describes precious metals such as gold and silver as stores of value that investors may use as a hedge against economic uncertainty and inflation (SEBI, Investment Asset Classes). That is a potential use case, not a guaranteed hedge in every period. Because gold has no contractual coupon or dividend, its result comes primarily from price movement after ownership costs. Include its correlation with the portfolio, not just its standalone return.

Cash and cash equivalents: stability with purchasing-power risk

The SEC describes cash equivalents as generally the safest and lowest-return major category, with inflation as the principal concern (SEC, Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing). Their nominal rate can change as short-term rates change, so use a period-matched cash benchmark rather than assuming today’s rate persisted.

Real estate, commodities, and private markets

These categories require extra care because the investable vehicle may differ from the underlying asset. Listed real-estate securities trade daily and can behave like equities; private property valuations may be infrequent. Commodity futures returns can include roll gains or losses and collateral income. Private equity returns can be affected by leverage, delayed valuations, cash-flow timing, and limited liquidity. Define the vehicle before drawing a ranking.

How to calculate a risk-adjusted comparison

After computing annualized nominal and real total returns, compare the compensation received for the risk taken.

Sharpe-style excess return

A common measure is:

Risk-adjusted return = (annualized portfolio return − risk-free rate) ÷ annualized volatility

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

State the risk-free proxy, return frequency, date range, and whether returns are nominal or real. The ratio is sensitive to the chosen period and assumes volatility is a useful description of risk; it does not capture every form of illiquidity, default, leverage, or tail loss.

Drawdown and downside checks

Pair any ratio with maximum drawdown, worst year, and recovery time. An asset can have a high average return and still be unsuitable for money needed during a deep, long decline. For bonds, add credit quality and duration; for gold, add storage or fund-tracking costs; for cash, add the real-return shortfall during inflation.

A repeatable comparison workflow

  1. Write the investor question. Specify whether the goal is growth, income, capital preservation, inflation protection, or diversification, plus the investment horizon and withdrawal needs.
  2. Choose the investable representatives. Select a broad total-return stock index, a bond index with matching quality and duration, a defined gold series, and category-appropriate benchmarks for any other assets.
  3. Lock the data conventions. Record geography, currency, dates, index type, distribution reinvestment, and gross or net treatment in a worksheet.
  4. Calculate holding-period total return. Include dividends, coupons, and distributions; subtract stated expenses and trading or ownership costs when the objective is investor net return.
  5. Annualize. Apply the CAGR formula to every multi-year result. Do not average yearly percentages arithmetically when the question concerns compounded wealth.
  6. Convert to real return. Use the inflation series relevant to the investor and preserve the nominal-versus-real label in every table.
  7. Add risk statistics. Calculate volatility, maximum drawdown, worst period, and recovery time; document the methodology and frequency.
  8. Adjust for implementation. Include taxes, fund expenses, commissions, spreads, custody, storage, currency hedging, and liquidity constraints that the investor would actually face.
  9. Assess portfolio contribution. Examine correlation and whether the asset improves the portfolio’s risk at the target allocation. A low-correlation asset can be useful even with a lower standalone return.
  10. Run sensitivity checks. Recalculate for different start dates, inflation assumptions, currencies, and fee levels. A ranking that changes completely with the window is not a robust forecast.

Fees, taxes, and inflation can reverse the ranking

Use net-of-cost figures when choosing between real products. Expense ratios reduce fund returns every year; trading spreads and commissions matter most when turnover is high; physical gold can incur storage and insurance costs; and private or alternative investments may embed management and performance fees. Put each cost in the same annualized framework rather than subtracting a one-time charge from only one asset.

Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction, account type, holding period, and whether the return is interest, dividend, capital gain, or a distribution. Do not apply one country’s rates to another investor. Build a separate after-tax column using the investor’s actual rules, and label any tax assumption as an assumption rather than a universal fact.

Use returns to build a portfolio, not to chase a winner

The SEC states that risk and reward are linked, that long-horizon investors may be able to accept more exposure to higher-risk categories, and that diversification can offset weakness in one category with stronger results in another (SEC, Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing). Vanguard likewise emphasizes that asset mix is a major driver of portfolio outcomes and recommends reviewing fund expense ratios in prospectuses (Vanguard, How should I choose investments?).

Set a target allocation based on time horizon, spending needs, loss tolerance, and required liquidity. Rebalance when allocations drift materially from that target rather than letting the best recent performer determine the portfolio. A comparison should therefore end with two decisions: which exposure meets the objective, and what allocation can be held through its likely bad periods.

Frequent comparison mistakes and fixes

  • Price return versus total return: Replace a stock price chart with a dividend-inclusive total-return series and include bond coupons.
  • Different holding periods: Convert every result to CAGR before ranking it.
  • Nominal numbers presented as purchasing power: Show the inflation-adjusted result separately.
  • Incompatible benchmarks: Match bond duration and credit quality, stock market segment, gold vehicle, currency, and fee convention.
  • One spectacular year treated as a forecast: Use several periods and disclose that historical averages can be exceeded or missed. FINRA warns that past performance rarely predicts future results (FINRA, Key Concepts: Return and Rate of Return).
  • Ignoring the path: Add drawdown, worst year, and recovery time to the average return.
  • Ignoring liquidity: Check settlement, redemption limits, spreads, and the possibility of a forced sale.
  • Calling gold a guaranteed hedge: Treat inflation or crisis protection as a possible behavior, then verify it over the exact period and currency being studied.
  • Mixing gross and net data: Put expenses, trading costs, storage, taxes, and currency conversion in a clearly labeled net-return calculation.
  • Confusing diversification with safety: A lower correlation can reduce portfolio risk, but every investment still carries some risk. The SEC states, “All investments involve some degree of risk” (SEC, Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing).

A practical reporting template

For each asset, publish one row with: representative investment; benchmark; currency; start and end dates; price or total-return series; distribution assumption; holding-period return; annualized nominal return; inflation measure; annualized real return; volatility; maximum drawdown; worst year; recovery time; income yield; liquidity; credit/default exposure; interest-rate sensitivity; fees; taxes; and correlation with the proposed portfolio.

That format answers both questions that matter: what the asset earned under a defined, reproducible method, and what the investor had to endure or pay to earn it. Because historical averages can be exceeded or missed, use the result to set expectations and allocations—not to promise the next period’s winner.
