To determine whether a company beat or missed earnings, compare the reported results for the exact fiscal quarter with a clearly identified, pre-release analyst consensus on the same accounting basis. Calculate the absolute and percentage surprises for EPS and revenue, then test whether operating metrics, margins, cash flow and forward guidance support the headline result. A positive surprise alone does not predict the stock’s next move.
What “beat” and “miss” actually mean
A beat means the reported figure exceeded the analyst estimate you have chosen; a miss means it fell below that estimate. The label is incomplete unless you identify the provider, the estimate’s capture date, the fiscal period and the accounting basis.
For example, “the company beat earnings” could refer to adjusted earnings per share (EPS) from one data vendor, while the company’s filing reports GAAP EPS. Those are different comparisons. Likewise, a consensus captured after the release is not the expectation investors held before the release and cannot be used to describe a pre-release surprise.

Start with the correct fiscal quarter and primary documents
Calendar labels are not reliable. A company may call a period “fiscal second quarter” even when it ends in a month that differs from the calendar quarter. Write down the company’s exact fiscal period and end date before collecting numbers.
The company’s earnings release, investor presentation, earnings-call transcript or recording and regulatory filing are the primary documents. Charles Schwab’s investor education guidance identifies these materials as the core set to review. Use the filing to verify the income statement, cash-flow statement, share count, segment data and footnotes rather than relying only on a headline release.
- Fiscal period: record the fiscal-quarter name, start date and end date.
- Reporting date: note when the release became public.
- Currency and units: distinguish dollars, euros or another currency, and millions from billions.
- Accounting basis: label every figure GAAP, adjusted, non-GAAP or another disclosed basis.
- Share measure: use diluted EPS when that is the company’s reported measure, and note the weighted-average diluted share count.
Build a like-for-like actual-versus-consensus record
Create a worksheet before interpreting the numbers. Save the estimate provider, publication or capture time and aggregation method whenever disclosed. Consensus is an aggregation of analyst forecasts, not an official company number; providers may use a mean, median or another methodology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fiscal period | Company’s exact fiscal quarter and end date | Prevents comparison with a different period |
| Actual EPS | Value, currency, diluted/basic designation and GAAP or adjusted basis | EPS figures are not interchangeable across bases |
| EPS consensus | Estimate, provider, capture timestamp and mean/median convention | Defines what “beat” means |
| Actual revenue | Total revenue, currency and units | Prevents millions-versus-billions errors |
| Revenue consensus | Estimate, provider and estimate vintage | A post-release estimate is not a pre-release expectation |
| Operating metrics | Bookings, subscribers, same-store sales, production, free cash flow or the company’s key driver | Shows whether the headline result reflects healthy demand |
| Guidance | Low, high and midpoint for the future period, plus the period covered | Keeps outlook separate from the quarter already reported |
Match each actual with the same metric in the consensus. Compare EPS with EPS and revenue with revenue; do not substitute net income for EPS. Confirm whether the consensus is GAAP or adjusted before doing any arithmetic.
Calculate the size of the surprise
For any metric, first calculate the absolute surprise:
Absolute surprise = actual result − analyst estimate
Then calculate the percentage surprise:
Percentage surprise = (actual result − analyst estimate) ÷ |analyst estimate| × 100
The absolute-value denominator keeps the direction of the result in the numerator while avoiding a sign reversal when an estimate is negative. Still, a percentage can be unstable or misleading when the estimate is close to zero or negative. In those cases, lead with the dollar or per-share difference and explain why the percentage is not economically meaningful.

Illustrative calculation
Suppose a company reports adjusted diluted EPS of $1.20 against a pre-release consensus of $1.10. The absolute surprise is $0.10, and the percentage surprise is ($1.20 − $1.10) ÷ $1.10 × 100 = 9.1%.
If revenue is $5.25 billion versus a $5.10 billion consensus, the absolute surprise is $150 million and the percentage surprise is 2.9%. Report both figures; a 9.1% EPS beat alongside a 2.9% revenue beat may indicate margin, tax, interest or share-count effects rather than proportionally stronger demand.
When the estimate is negative or near zero
If the consensus is a loss of $0.02 per share and the company reports a loss of $0.01, the result improved by $0.01, but a 50% calculation can exaggerate its significance. State the per-share change, the direction of the loss and the denominator problem. If the consensus is exactly zero, do not present a percentage surprise; use the absolute difference and a plain-language explanation.
Check the accounting basis, share count and unusual items
GAAP reported EPS and adjusted or non-GAAP EPS are not interchangeable without a reconciliation. A company may exclude stock compensation, restructuring, acquisition costs, impairment, litigation, gains or losses on investments, or other items from adjusted EPS. Read the reconciliation in the release or filing and identify whether the excluded item is genuinely unusual or recurring in practice.
EPS is also a per-share measure. Net income can rise while EPS rises faster because the company repurchased shares, or EPS can fall despite stable net income if dilution increases. Record diluted weighted-average shares and compare them with the prior-year and prior-quarter figures.
- Check the income statement for operating income, interest expense, taxes and one-time gains or charges.
- Check the cash-flow statement to see whether reported profit converted into operating cash.
- Read footnotes for acquisition accounting, segment changes, discontinued operations and restatements.
- Reconcile adjusted figures to GAAP before comparing companies that use different non-GAAP definitions.
A headline EPS beat caused mainly by buybacks, a lower tax rate or a nonrecurring gain says something different from a beat driven by recurring revenue and operating leverage.
Test revenue quality and the operating metrics that drive the business
Repeat the actual-versus-consensus comparison for revenue and for the metrics investors use to value that business. Depending on the industry, these may include bookings, subscribers, same-store sales, production volume, average revenue per user, backlog, order growth or free cash flow.
Revenue composition
Break revenue into segments, products, regions or recurring and transactional streams when the company discloses them. Ask whether growth came from volume, price, foreign-exchange translation, an acquisition or a one-time contract. Compare organic growth with reported growth where that distinction is available.

Margins and operating leverage
Compare gross, operating and net margins with the prior-year quarter and prior quarter. A revenue beat accompanied by falling gross margin may indicate discounting, input-cost pressure or an unfavorable mix. Conversely, a modest revenue beat with expanding operating margin can produce a larger EPS surprise that is supported by operations.
Cash flow and balance sheet
Compare operating cash flow and free cash flow with net income, and inspect receivables, inventory, deferred revenue, debt and cash. Weak cash conversion can make an accrual-based earnings beat less durable. Rising debt, a large working-capital use or a material change in liquidity can matter more than a small EPS variance.
Compare management guidance with the right forward consensus
Guidance describes a future period; it is not the result already reported. Match the period and metric precisely. Do not compare next-quarter guidance with the quarter just completed.
When management gives a range, preserve the entire range and calculate a midpoint only as a convention:
Guidance midpoint = (low end + high end) ÷ 2
For example, guidance of $2.00 to $2.20 billion has a $2.10 billion midpoint. State the low, high and midpoint, then compare each with the forward analyst consensus. A midpoint comparison can hide the range’s width, so never replace the range with the midpoint alone.
| Forward item | Company guidance | Forward consensus | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Low and high; midpoint labeled as such | Provider, date and estimate | Above, below or straddles consensus |
| EPS | GAAP or adjusted basis and range | Same basis and period | Basis mismatch invalidates the comparison |
| Margin | Specified range or qualitative outlook | Comparable estimate if available | Shows whether growth is expected to be profitable |
| Operating metric | Bookings, subscribers, production or other target | Same metric and period | Tests the assumptions behind revenue |
Read management’s explanation and question-and-answer session for demand, pricing, costs, margins, capital allocation, risks and changes to the outlook. A result can beat the old consensus while guidance effectively lowers expectations if analysts had already moved above the published figure.
Use the estimate vintage and revisions correctly
Analyst estimates change before a release. Record whether your consensus was captured days or minutes before the announcement and do not mix it with a later estimate. If the provider discloses a range, analyst count or dispersion, preserve that information; a small beat over a tightly clustered consensus differs from a small beat over widely scattered forecasts.

The CFA Institute and National Investor Relations Institute’s 2004 guidance warns that “The magnitude of analysts’ earnings estimates or basis used may not match the earnings guidance provided by corporate issuers.” That is why a company’s guidance and an analyst consensus must be labeled separately rather than treated as equivalent numbers.
Compare the quarter with history and peers
A surprise has meaning only in context. Compare the current quarter with the prior-year quarter for seasonality and with the immediately preceding quarter for sequential momentum. Then compare relevant competitors or industry conditions, keeping fiscal periods and accounting bases consistent.
| Comparison axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| EPS surprise percentage | How far did EPS differ from the named consensus? |
| Revenue surprise percentage | Did sales also exceed expectations, and by how much? |
| Year-over-year growth | Is the business larger than in the comparable seasonal quarter? |
| Sequential growth | Did momentum improve or weaken from the previous quarter? |
| Margin direction | Are gross and operating margins expanding or contracting? |
| Cash-flow conversion | How much operating or free cash flow supports reported profit? |
| Guidance versus forward consensus | Does the outlook sit above, below or across the analyst range? |
| Estimate revisions | Were forecasts rising or falling before and after the release? |
| Recurring versus one-off drivers | Can the factors behind the result reasonably repeat? |
| Post-release price reaction | How did the market respond, without treating that response as proof of business quality? |
Keep each row comparable. A company with a December fiscal year-end may report a fiscal quarter that does not align with a peer’s calendar quarter, and a retailer’s same-store sales cannot be substituted for a software company’s bookings.

Share prices reflect expectations about future cash flows, not just the reported quarter. Charles Schwab summarizes the point this way: “A company can beat headline estimates and still see its shares fall if investors are disappointed by the outlook or another closely watched part of the report.”
Common explanations include:
- Guidance below expectations: The company beat the historical consensus but forecast a weaker next period.
- Lower-quality beat: EPS exceeded estimates because of buybacks, tax benefits or a one-time item while revenue or cash flow lagged.
- Margin pressure: Sales beat, but costs, pricing or mix reduced expected profitability.
- Key-metric miss: Subscribers, bookings, same-store sales or another closely watched driver disappointed.
- High expectations: Investors had positioned for a much larger beat than the published consensus.
- Estimate revisions: Analysts may cut future forecasts after hearing management’s assumptions.
- External conditions: Interest rates, industry news or broad market risk can dominate a single report.
Do not infer that a positive surprise guarantees a positive stock move, or that a falling stock proves the quarter was poor. Treat the price reaction as one observation to explain alongside the fundamentals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Worked example: separating an EPS beat from its drivers
Consider this hypothetical, internally consistent comparison:
| Metric | Actual | Pre-release consensus | Absolute surprise | Percentage surprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adjusted diluted EPS | $1.20 | $1.10 | $0.10 | 9.1% |
| Revenue | $5.25 billion | $5.10 billion | $0.15 billion | 2.9% |
| Free cash flow | $410 million | $430 million | -$20 million | -4.7% |
The company beat both EPS and revenue estimates, but free cash flow missed. Suppose the filing also shows diluted shares down 6% year over year and a lower tax rate. The correct conclusion is not simply “strong earnings.” The evidence points to a revenue beat, an EPS result helped partly by share-count and tax effects, and weaker cash conversion that requires investigation. The next questions are whether margins improved, whether receivables or inventory absorbed cash, and what guidance says about the following period.

How much weight should a beat receive?
Use a simple evidence hierarchy. A broad, recurring beat is stronger when revenue, key operating metrics, margins and cash flow all exceed expectations and guidance is maintained or raised. A narrow EPS beat is weaker when revenue misses, cash conversion deteriorates, the share count falls sharply or excluded items account for the difference. A result that beats an old consensus but falls below recently rising expectations should be described with the estimate vintage and revision history, not with an unqualified “beat.”
For historical context only, FactSet’s Earnings Insight dated October 17, 2025 reported positive EPS surprises at 86% of S&P 500 companies that had reported by that point and positive revenue surprises at 84%. Those figures describe that reporting season’s companies at that date; they are not current rates and should not be used to predict the next quarter.
