Compare plywood, cement and glass stocks as different businesses, not as interchangeable labels. Start by identifying each company’s products, segments, geography and end markets. Then align fiscal periods, currencies and accounting scope before comparing growth, profitability, returns, leverage, cash generation and valuation. A low P/E is useful only when it is considered alongside operating quality, capital intensity, the cycle and balance-sheet risk.
Why a cross-sector comparison needs a framework
Plywood, cement and glass all participate in construction or durable-goods demand, but their economics are distinct. Plywood companies can be exposed to wood fibre, veneers, resin, freight and interior renovation. Cement producers depend on limestone, fuel, electricity, freight, kiln utilization and regional construction. Glass makers may serve automotive, architectural and project customers, with furnace energy, coating, fabrication, breakage and customer concentration affecting results.
The labels are also imperfect. A “plywood” company may report fibreboard, veneers, laminates, distribution or other wood products. A cement company may include ready-mix concrete, aggregates or downstream products. A glass company may combine automotive glass, float glass, architectural products and fabrication. Read the latest annual report, segment notes and quarterly presentation before placing any company in a peer group.

Step 1: Define the business exposure before reading ratios
Identify reported segments and products
Record the products that generate revenue, the segment in which they are reported and whether the company manufactures, distributes or both. A distributor can show high sales with structurally lower margins than an integrated manufacturer. A company with several segments may have a “plywood” label while most earnings come from another product.
- For plywood, separate branded panels, commodity panels, veneers, fibreboard and distribution. Note whether the company buys finished products or controls board and press capacity.
- For cement, distinguish grey cement, white cement, ready-mix concrete, aggregates and other building materials. Record the geographic footprint because freight makes cement markets regional.
- For glass, separate automotive, float, architectural, coated, fabricated and specialty products. Customer mix can make a glass company more dependent on vehicle production or large construction projects than its name suggests.
Map end markets and geography
Demand may come from housing, renovation, interiors, infrastructure, vehicle production, commercial construction or project activity. Compare the exposure rather than assuming that all three industries move together. A housing slowdown may reduce plywood demand while infrastructure spending supports cement. A vehicle-production downturn can affect automotive glass even when building activity is firm.
Write down the countries and currencies used in the accounts. The dated Indian illustration below should not be merged with older global glass disclosures or with companies reporting different fiscal calendars. Currency conversion can change apparent growth and valuation, especially when exchange rates move sharply.
Step 2: Align the periods, definitions and accounting scope
Use the same fiscal-year convention wherever possible. If one company reports a March year-end and another a December year-end, label the periods explicitly rather than treating them as simultaneous. Compare year-over-year quarters, not an isolated quarter against a full-year figure. A single quarter may reflect seasonality, maintenance shutdowns, weather or a temporary price change.
Preserve whether a number is consolidated or standalone, audited or unaudited, reported or adjusted, and stated in millions, crores or another unit. Revenue is not profit; a segment result is not consolidated net income; and a company margin is not a sector benchmark. Reported exchange and issuer figures are measurements from those companies, not independently harmonized estimates.
Annual reports, quarterly result presentations and exchange filings are the best places to verify segment definitions, management commentary and the notes behind each figure. Check that acquisitions, discontinued operations, exceptional items and changes in accounting policy have not broken the trend.
The metric set that works across all three sectors
Use a dashboard rather than one ratio. The following sequence moves from operating momentum to profitability, returns, financial risk, cash and valuation.

1. Measure growth, but separate price from volume
Begin with revenue growth over several years, then split it into volume, realization or price, product mix and acquisitions. A plywood company can report strong sales because panel prices rose while physical volume fell. Cement revenue can increase through price or premium mix even when dispatches are flat. Glass revenue can reflect higher-value specialty products rather than more square metres or vehicle units.
Read utilization and capacity data with growth. New capacity can depress utilization and returns before demand catches up. Conversely, a mature plant operating near practical capacity may have less volume upside but stronger near-term pricing. Compare reported volume with the company’s own capacity, not with another sector’s units.
For quarterly analysis, compare the same quarter a year earlier and then reconcile it with the full-year trend. Look for consistency across several periods and ask whether management’s explanation is supported by price, volume and mix disclosures.
2. Examine profitability at several levels
Gross and operating economics
Use gross margin where it is consistently reported, then EBITDA or operating margin for the core business. Operating margin shows whether pricing and mix are covering materials, energy, labour, freight and manufacturing overhead. Cement fuel and freight, glass furnace energy and plywood wood or resin costs can move at different speeds, so the direction of margin change matters as much as the level.
Check whether margins include one-time benefits, inventory gains, subsidies or exceptional charges. A commodity price spike can temporarily lift a plywood manufacturer’s margin; a furnace rebuild or kiln shutdown can temporarily depress a glass or cement producer. Compare normalized periods and read the notes before calling a change structural.
Net margin and interest burden
Net margin is useful after operating costs, depreciation, finance expense and tax, but it can hide leverage differences. Two companies with similar operating margins may have very different net margins because one carries more debt or has a different depreciation profile. Track finance cost, effective tax rate and non-operating income alongside net profit.
Do not substitute net margin for operating quality. A gain on an asset sale can increase net income without improving the manufacturing business. Conversely, a planned maintenance outage can reduce one period’s profit while protecting future capacity.

3. Compare ROE and ROCE with the capital structure in view
Return on equity (ROE) measures profit earned on shareholders’ equity. Return on capital employed (ROCE) or return on invested capital is often more informative for capital-intensive manufacturers because it evaluates operating profit against the capital required by the business. Use the same numerator and denominator definitions across companies.
A high ROE can result from genuine operating efficiency, but it can also be amplified by heavy borrowing or a small equity base. A low ROE may reflect a recently commissioned kiln, furnace or board line whose earnings have not yet reached steady utilization. Examine asset age, expansion timing, depreciation and working-capital investment before ranking returns.
Compare returns with the cost of capital and with the company’s own history. A return that exceeds its financing and reinvestment requirements is more valuable than a high percentage produced during a brief commodity upswing.
4. Test leverage, liquidity and interest cover
Debt-to-equity is a quick starting point, but it is not sufficient. Add net debt-to-EBITDA, interest coverage, lease liabilities, maturity dates and undrawn committed facilities. Cement expansion and glass furnace projects can create substantial debt before the new capacity contributes earnings. Plywood working capital and inventory can also absorb cash even when reported profit is positive.
- Debt-to-equity: useful for a first pass, but affected by accumulated reserves, revaluations and lease accounting.
- Net debt-to-EBITDA: relates borrowing to operating earnings, but can look artificially low at a cyclical peak.
- Interest cover: compare EBIT or EBITDA with finance cost and stress-test it at lower margins.
- Liquidity: review cash, revolver availability, maturity concentrations and covenant headroom.
Read debt covenants and security arrangements where disclosed. A company can report low debt-to-equity while facing a near-term refinancing need, foreign-currency exposure or large committed capital expenditure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Follow operating cash flow and capital expenditure
Operating cash flow shows whether accounting earnings are turning into cash after working-capital movements. Compare it with net profit over several years, not just one period. Investigate a gap caused by receivables, inventory, supplier terms, taxes or one-off items.
Subtract maintenance and expansion capital expenditure to estimate cash available for debt reduction, dividends or reinvestment. Cement mines, kilns and grinding units; glass furnaces and coating lines; and plywood presses and board capacity all require different maintenance cycles. A company can show strong EBITDA while consuming cash because it is building capacity or rebuilding a furnace.

Greenply has the highest FY26 revenue growth and ROE in this illustration, while its P/E is slightly above the cited industry P/E and its debt-to-equity is 0.58. Nuvoco has the lowest P/E and debt-to-equity, but also the lowest ROE. Asahi India Glass shows the highest P/E and a P/E well above the cited industry figure, alongside stronger Q1 FY27 revenue growth than the other two companies.
The comparison does not establish that one stock is superior. The companies have different product mixes, scales, capital cycles and demand drivers. The figures also do not provide a harmonized EBITDA margin, ROCE, net debt-to-EBITDA or capex measure, so those metrics must be obtained from the filings before a complete ranking.
Why a low P/E is not enough
P/E compares a share price with earnings per share. It is intuitive, but it is sensitive to the earnings cycle, depreciation, leverage, tax and one-off items. A cement stock can look cheap at the top of a volume and pricing cycle, just before margins normalize. A glass stock can look expensive because the market is pricing specialty mix, a recovery in vehicle production or a newly commissioned asset.
Use at least three valuation views:
- Forward and trailing P/E: compare the definition of earnings and the forecast period. Do not mix adjusted and reported profit without labeling the difference.
- EV/EBITDA: includes debt and is often more useful when capital structures differ, but it still ignores maintenance capex and working-capital needs.
- P/B or replacement-cost context: can help for asset-heavy businesses, provided book values and asset ages are comparable. Replacement cost is not a market price and can be difficult to estimate.
Compare each multiple with the company’s own historical range, its operating growth and its return on capital. A premium multiple requires durable advantages such as stronger mix, pricing power, superior utilization or lower financial risk; otherwise, the premium may simply reflect temporary optimism.

Sector-specific risks that can break a ratio-based ranking
Plywood and wood products
Wood fibre, veneer, resin, labour and freight can change faster than selling prices. Commodity plywood pricing is particularly exposed to short-term supply and demand. Boise Cascade described OSB, plywood and lumber as commodities widely available from multiple sources, with prices and volumes frequently determined in an auction market by participants’ views of short-term supply and demand. That exposure can create sharp margin swings even when long-term housing demand is unchanged.

Check branded versus commodity sales, distributor inventory, resin pass-through, plant utilization, working-capital days and capacity additions. Renovation and interior demand may behave differently from new housing.
Cement
Fuel, electricity, limestone access, freight and regional pricing dominate the cost structure. Kiln utilization and the distance from plant to customer can matter more than national demand. Expansion debt may precede the volume benefit by several years, while maintenance shutdowns can temporarily reduce utilization.
Review premium-product mix, dispatch volume, realization per tonne, energy cost per tonne, captive power, alternative fuels and the geographic balance of plants. Ready-mix operations add a different working-capital and logistics profile.

Furnace energy and raw materials are major cost drivers, while a furnace rebuild is a large, lumpy commitment. Automotive glass depends on vehicle production and model wins; architectural glass depends on construction and project timing; specialty and coated products may support better mix but require technology and customer qualification.
Track furnace age, planned rebuilds, utilization, specialty share, customer concentration, automotive production exposure and project receivables. A short-term margin decline may be a deliberate rebuild cycle rather than permanent deterioration.
Step-by-step workflow for a repeatable comparison
- Build the universe: list the ticker, exchange, reporting currency, fiscal year-end and every material segment for each candidate.
- Read the latest annual report first: verify products, geography, segment revenue, accounting scope, debt and capital commitments.
- Extract three to five years of history: revenue, volume, realizations, EBITDA or operating profit, net profit, ROE or ROCE, debt, interest cover, operating cash flow and capex.
- Normalize the periods: label fiscal years and quarters, separate continuing operations from acquisitions and keep reported and adjusted figures distinct.
- Analyze growth quality: split revenue change into volume, price, mix, currency and acquisitions; compare utilization with available capacity.
- Analyze profitability: identify input costs, pass-through, fixed-cost absorption, exceptional items and the direction of margins through the cycle.
- Stress the balance sheet: test interest cover and liquidity at lower utilization or margins, and list maturities, leases and committed capital expenditure.
- Reconcile cash: compare operating cash flow with profit, then subtract maintenance and expansion capex to assess funding needs.
- Value the equity: compare P/E, EV/EBITDA and, where relevant, P/B with peer ranges, the company’s own history, expected growth and returns on capital.
- Refresh volatile inputs: replace dated share prices, market capitalization and multiples with current exchange or issuer data immediately before publication or an investment decision.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Ranking by sector label: correct this by reading segment notes and weighting each business by earnings, not its marketing description.
- Using one quarter: correct this with year-over-year quarters and a full-year reconciliation.
- Mixing currencies or fiscal years: correct this by preserving the original currency and period, then converting only with a stated exchange-rate method.
- Treating debt-to-equity as total risk: add net debt-to-EBITDA, interest cover, leases, maturities and liquidity.
- Calling revenue growth profit growth: inspect margins, finance costs, taxes and cash conversion.
- Ignoring capex: distinguish maintenance from expansion spending and evaluate returns on incremental capital.
- Assuming a premium P/E is irrational: test whether growth, mix, utilization, balance-sheet quality and returns justify it.
- Assuming a low P/E is safe: check whether earnings are at a cyclical peak, a plant is under repair or debt refinancing is approaching.
What to verify before acting
Use the latest exchange filing, annual report and quarterly presentation to refresh every volatile figure. Confirm the publication date, share-price close, share count, net debt definition, segment boundaries and whether ratios use trailing or forward earnings. Treat the dated Indian figures above as a worked example of the method, not as a current ranking.
Finally, distinguish analysis from execution. A screener can identify candidates, but an investment decision requires reading filings, assessing suitability and following the rules of the relevant market and regulator. The most defensible comparison is the one in which every number has a period, currency, definition and business explanation attached to it.
