To compare phones by how large and heavy they feel to carry, line up each exact model’s height, width, depth, and weight. Keep screen diagonal separate: it measures the display, not the outside of the handset. These specifications help narrow a shortlist, but they cannot tell you whether a particular phone will feel comfortable in your hand.
Which phone measurements should you compare?
Record the body dimensions and weight for each phone, then compare like with like. Manufacturers publish screen details separately from body measurements, as shown in Google’s Pixel comparison and Apple’s iPhone comparison.
| Specification | What it tells you | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Width | The handset’s side-to-side span | Relevant to how much the phone spans across your hand; it does not establish one-handed comfort on its own. |
| Height | The handset’s top-to-bottom length | May matter for reach and pocket length, depending on how you use the phone. |
| Depth | The handset’s thickness | Check whether the manufacturer’s figure includes the camera bump. |
| Weight | The listed mass of the phone | Compare the exact model and configuration; similar dimensions do not guarantee similar weight. |
| Display diagonal | The screen’s diagonal measurement | Useful for comparing display size, but not a substitute for body width, height, or depth. |
| Folded and unfolded dimensions | The phone’s size in each state | For foldables, compare both states rather than relying on a single dimensions row. |
How to build a useful comparison
- Identify the exact phones. Write down each model and generation, plus any region or configuration distinction shown on the manufacturer’s page. A family name alone may not identify the specifications you need.
- Collect the same measurements. For every phone, record height, width, depth, weight, and display diagonal in a table. Convert measurements into consistent units before comparing.
- Keep display and body size separate. Use diagonal to compare screens, and the three body dimensions to compare the handset’s exterior. A larger display diagonal does not, by itself, tell you which phone is wider or thicker.
- Read the specification notes. Google says dimensions and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process; it also says its depth measurement excludes the camera bump. Apple likewise notes that size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process. See Google’s Pixel hardware specifications and Apple’s iPhone comparison.
- Compare each measurement with your priorities. You may give more weight to width and mass for handling and carrying, or to height and depth for reach, pocket length, and bulk. Those are personal trade-offs, not universal comfort rules.
- For a foldable, note both states. Compare its folded dimensions with other phones as you would carry it, and its unfolded dimensions if screen size in use matters. Google’s specifications for the Pixel 11 Pro Fold provide measurements for both states.
What specifications cannot tell you
Published dimensions and weight are useful for filtering a shortlist, but they are not a hands-on comfort test. The official specifications cited here do not establish a universally comfortable phone width or weight, or a reliable comfort ranking for different hands. If possible, handle the exact device before buying; grip and reach are individual.
Also treat manufacturer figures as published specifications, not guarantees that every manufactured unit will measure identically. Configuration and manufacturing variation are explicitly noted by Google and Apple. For Google phones, a listed depth that excludes the camera bump may not represent the phone’s maximum protrusion.
