O2C can connect order capture through invoicing and payment collection, but platforms differ in which stages they automate. A fair shortlist starts by deciding what your organization needs, then tests integrations, controls, operational fit, evidence, and total contract cost.
What an order-to-cash platform may cover
O2C describes connected work from receiving and managing orders through invoicing, collecting payments, and resolving receivables. Depending on the product and deployment, automation may include:
- Order management
- Credit management
- Customer inquiry management
- Invoice delivery
- Cash application
- Deductions and dispute handling
- Collections
These modules do not necessarily replace core ERP order management or cover every accounts-receivable task. Map each workflow to the system that will own it—O2C platform, ERP, or another tool—and identify handoffs before comparing vendors.

Build a comparable evaluation
Give every vendor the same scenarios and ask for demonstrations using your process assumptions. This makes gaps and differences easier to see than demonstrations built around each vendor’s preferred workflow.
1. Fix the workflow scope
List the stages you want to automate and the ones that will stay in the ERP or other applications. For each stage, specify the users, handoffs, exceptions, approvals, and required outputs. Ask vendors to show the complete path, including what happens when a transaction cannot proceed normally.
2. Test the ERP and ecosystem connections
Use your actual ERP product and deployed version, plus the surrounding systems that matter: AP portals, banks, payment channels, and customer systems. For every connection, ask whether it is a certified or pre-built connector, an API, a file exchange, or custom work. Confirm the supported data flows, ownership, failure handling, upgrade responsibility, and who maintains the connection after go-live.

For example, Billtrust’s reviewed integration page describes ERP connections through direct connectors or custom integration and says it delivers invoices to more than 260 AP portals worldwide. That stated reach does not establish that a particular ERP version, portal, payment rail, or data flow is supported in your geography or contract; validate the exact configuration with the vendor. Esker describes plug-and-play connectivity with leading ERP systems, including REST APIs and file exchange for legacy systems or large data volumes. Ask which method applies to your environment and what it means for implementation and ongoing support. Esker’s connectivity overview describes the methods it lists.
3. Exercise exceptions and controls
Demonstrate disputed invoices, deductions, unmatched cash, approval paths, audit trails, and failed integrations—not just a clean transaction. Confirm how exceptions are assigned, escalated, corrected, and reconciled, and which system retains the authoritative record.

4. Validate operational fit
Check fit against the organization that will run the platform, not only its feature list. Establish requirements for:
- Legal entities and countries
- Transaction volumes and currencies
- Languages and country-specific invoicing needs
- Roles, access controls, and approvals
- Reporting and governance
- Data migration, customer staffing, and implementation partners
- Connector support, upgrades, and ongoing maintenance
Ask vendors to state dependencies, timeline assumptions, customer responsibilities, and the effect of upgrades on integrations. Treat broad statements about global or plug-and-play support as a starting point for these questions, not as proof that every local requirement is covered.

The reviewed material does not establish a shared methodology or independent verification for these figures. Before treating any claimed result as relevant to your business, request the baseline, precise metric definition, customer cohort, measurement window, and references. Esker’s page with its stated outcome figures is the source for these vendor claims.
The Hackett Group’s 2025 Cash Application Software Digital World Class Matrix lists Billtrust, Esker, HighRadius, Oracle, SAP, and other providers in that category. It is evidence of participants in cash application software, not a complete O2C shortlist or a ranking for every buyer. The Hackett Group’s 2025 matrix can inform market discovery, but should not substitute for fit evaluation.
HighRadius describes an integrated finance platform that includes O2C and advertises pre-built ERP integrations. It also refers to outcome-based pricing without stating a comparable O2C subscription or implementation price. Ask what the pricing model covers in the specific offer rather than assuming it applies to every deployment. HighRadius’s product information describes its platform and pricing language.

Compare costs using the same quote scope
Public comparable prices were not established in the reviewed evidence, so a reliable cost comparison requires quotes based on matching assumptions. Do not infer total cost from a pricing label or compare a narrow module quote with a broader suite quote.
Send each vendor the same scope and normalize the proposal for:
- Modules and workflows included
- Users, entities, transaction volumes, countries, and currencies
- ERP and other integrations, including custom work
- Implementation, migration, and partner services
- Support, maintenance, and connector ownership
- Volume tiers, renewal terms, and contract duration
- Exit costs and any charges needed to change or remove integrations
Ask vendors to separate recurring software fees from setup, implementation, integration, and support charges, and to state assumptions behind each line item. This helps distinguish a lower initial quote from a lower expected contract cost.
Use a shortlist decision framework
For each candidate, record whether it meets the requirement, what evidence supports that conclusion, and what remains unverified. A useful shortlist should make unresolved risks visible rather than hiding them behind an overall score.

- Workflow: Mark each required O2C stage as covered, out of scope, or dependent on another system.
- Integration: Record the exact ERP/version and connection type, plus data ownership, failure handling, and maintenance responsibility.
- Controls and exceptions: Note demonstrated handling for disputes, deductions, unmatched cash, approvals, audit, and failed transfers.
- Operating fit: Confirm entities, geography, volume, language, currency, reporting, security, migration, and staffing assumptions.
- Evidence: Separate demonstrated product behavior and customer references from vendor-reported outcomes; document metric definitions and measurement context.
- Commercials: Compare normalized quotes with the same modules, volumes, integrations, implementation scope, support, renewal, and exit assumptions.
Do not declare a universal winner from category inclusion or a vendor’s stated savings. Choose based on the workflow coverage, integration responsibilities, operational constraints, evidence quality, and contract scope that matter to your organization.
