There is no universal graphics winner you can identify from the consoles’ specification sheets alone. Nintendo lists Switch 2’s maximum TV output as 4K at 60 fps, while Sony’s original PS4 announcement gives its GPU a theoretical rating of 1.84 teraflops. Those figures describe different things; neither tells you how a particular game renders or performs. For a meaningful comparison, match the game, scene, console model, display context and game mode.

What the published specifications actually tell you

Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications describe its screen and available video output. Sony’s 2013 announcement describes the original PS4’s GPU and memory. These figures are useful context, but they are not directly comparable performance scores.

Console and source Published figure What it means—and what it does not
Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo (2025) Built-in 7.9-inch LCD: 1920×1080, HDR10 support, variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz. Describes the handheld display and its capabilities; it does not establish the resolution or frame rate a game will render.
Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo (2025) Maximum TV output: 3840×2160 at 60 fps; up to 120 fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 output selections. These are system output limits, not promises that games render natively at those resolutions or reach those frame rates. The game and its mode determine actual behavior. Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications.
Standard PS4, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (2013) GPU rated at 1.84 teraflops, with 18 compute units and 8 GB unified GDDR5 memory. A theoretical hardware specification, not a direct measure of image quality or a comparable cross-console game benchmark. Sony’s PS4 announcement.
Standard PS4, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (2013) Sony presented smooth 1080p HD as a platform capability and design goal. This does not guarantee that every PS4 game renders natively at 1080p or sustains a particular frame rate. Sony’s North American PS4 launch announcement.

A teraflops rating and a maximum output resolution are different kinds of measurements. Neither figure alone establishes which console produces the sharper image, steadier frame rate or better-looking version of a game.

Does Switch 2 run games at 4K?

Nintendo specifies maximum TV output of 3840×2160 at 60 fps. That describes the signal Switch 2 can output; it does not establish that a game internally renders every frame at native 4K. A game may render at a different resolution or use image reconstruction or upscaling. Check evidence for the specific game and mode before describing its resolution.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

In handheld use, Switch 2’s built-in screen is 1920×1080. That screen specification likewise does not prove that every game renders at 1080p.

How to compare graphics and performance fairly

  1. Match the game and versions. Compare the same title on each console, and identify the game version or update. A conclusion about one title does not establish a result for other games.
  2. Choose comparable scenes and modes. Use the same scene where possible, and compare equivalent graphics or performance modes. Name the mode on each console if they differ.
  3. State the display context. Say whether Switch 2 is handheld or docked. For a TV comparison, use the same display and viewing conditions; do not compare the handheld screen directly with a TV image as though the viewing setup were identical.
  4. Separate rendering resolution from output resolution. Record the game’s internal resolution when reliable evidence establishes it, the final output resolution, and any dynamic resolution, upscaling or reconstruction. Do not infer internal resolution from the TV signal alone.
  5. Assess frame rate and consistency. Report the target frame rate separately from observed performance. Note drops, uneven frame pacing or instability when supported by measurements; a listed output ceiling is not evidence that a game sustains it.
  6. Compare visual details and image quality. Look at settings, effects and visible details, then judge the image at the same display size and viewing distance. Report these separately from resolution and frame rate rather than collapsing them into a single “better graphics” verdict.
  7. Include other performance measures only with evidence. Load times, for example, belong in the comparison only when they have been directly measured or supported by a cited benchmark.

For any game-specific finding, name the game, version, mode and evidence behind the result. Official hardware specifications establish each manufacturer’s published figures, but they do not provide matched Switch 2-versus-PS4 game benchmarks.

Which PS4 model does this comparison mean?

The PS4 figures above refer to the standard PS4 in Sony’s original announcement. PS4 Pro is a different model, so its specifications or game results should not be substituted without clearly labeling the comparison as PS4 Pro. Switch 2 supports inserting Switch 2 and original Switch game cards, but compatibility is a separate question from graphics and performance comparisons.
