To compare luxury-goods companies fairly, put their revenue on the same fiscal timeline and currency basis, separate reported growth from organic or constant-currency growth, and compare operating margin with operating margin. Then examine whether each margin is rising or falling and connect the movement to product mix, geography, pricing, currency, distribution and fixed costs. A fast-growing company is not automatically stronger if its margin is contracting; a high-margin company is not automatically healthier if demand is slowing.
The benchmark below uses recent disclosures from LVMH, Kering, Richemont and Hermès. It keeps gross margin separate from operating margin and flags where a comparable figure was not disclosed.
A consistent framework for comparing luxury companies
1. Put fiscal periods on one timeline
Luxury groups do not all close their books on the same date. LVMH, Kering and Hermès report calendar-year results in the cited releases, while Richemont’s cited financial year ended 31 March 2025. Label every period explicitly rather than calling all of them “2025 results.” Richemont’s March year-end means its latest period overlaps only part of the calendar-year companies’ 2025 period, so a ranking can contain timing effects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the same currency for the table, normally the reporting currency when all companies report in euros. If you convert currencies, use one clearly stated rate and do not mix translated revenue with a company’s own constant-currency percentage. A reported euro increase can reflect exchange rates rather than stronger underlying demand.

2. Match the margin definition
Operating margin is operating profit divided by revenue. Recurring-operating margin uses recurring operating profit and is the closest like-for-like measure when every company reports it. Gross margin is gross profit divided by revenue and excludes different cost layers from operating margin. Keep gross margin in its own column and do not rank a gross-margin percentage directly against another company’s operating margin.
3. Show both the level and the direction
A current margin is a snapshot; the change from the prior period reveals momentum. A high margin that is falling can indicate weaker demand, heavier investment, discounting or unfavorable mix. Rapid revenue growth with a falling margin can mean that new stores, marketing or logistics are being added before sales mature. Conversely, modest growth with a stable or rising margin may indicate pricing power and disciplined cost absorption.
4. Separate reported growth from underlying demand
Reported growth includes currency translation, acquisitions, disposals and calendar effects. Organic, comparable or constant-currency growth is intended to isolate underlying trading, but the definitions differ by company. Display both when available; never combine a reported percentage from one company with an organic percentage from another in a single ranking.

The calculations you need
Reported revenue growth
For a single period, calculate:
(current-period revenue − prior-period revenue) ÷ prior-period revenue × 100
Keep the company’s published percentage when one is available, because its scope may reflect disposals, acquisitions or restatements that a simple calculation does not capture.
Two-year or three-year CAGR
For a multi-year view, use:
(ending revenue ÷ starting revenue) 1 ÷ number of years − 1
Use reported revenue for the CAGR and show the latest organic or constant-currency rate in a separate column. A reported CAGR is not an organic CAGR.

Operating margin and change in percentage points
Calculate operating margin as operating profit divided by revenue, then compare periods in percentage points:
current margin − prior margin
Say “down 2.4 percentage points,” not “down 2.4%,” when describing a margin movement. A percentage-point change measures profitability directly; a percentage change would measure the relative size of the margin itself.

What the benchmark says about each company
LVMH: scale with a modest recent slowdown
LVMH combines many businesses, so its consolidated result can conceal strong and weak divisions. The table shows a lower 2025 revenue and recurring-operating profit than in 2024, alongside a 1.1-point margin contraction. The 2024 organic-growth figure of 1% indicates that reported performance should be read with currency and mix in mind. For an investment comparison, inspect the individual businesses before treating the group percentage as a pure measure of demand.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The practical conclusion is not that scale guarantees growth. Scale can spread fixed costs and support a high margin, but a diversified portfolio also makes the headline margin sensitive to which categories and regions grow fastest.
Kering: a large gap between Houses
Kering’s group decline and sharp recurring-margin compression are not evenly distributed. Gucci’s contraction and margin profile differ materially from Bottega Veneta’s comparable growth and margin. A group ranking that ignores House-level data would treat two very different operating situations as one. Separate the largest House, the fastest-growing House and the rest of the portfolio, then ask whether investment is being directed toward recovery, brand elevation or capacity.
Kering Chairman and CEO François-Henri Pinault described the period this way: “In a difficult year, we accelerated the transformation of several of our Houses and moved determinedly to strengthen the health and desirability of our brands for the long term.” The statement explains management’s strategic intent; it does not replace the revenue and margin evidence.

Richemont: jewellery strength offsets watch weakness
Richemont’s group result illustrates why category mix must sit beside the margin. Jewellery Maisons and Specialist Watchmakers show sharply different growth and profitability. A group-level 4% sales increase can therefore coexist with pressure in a major category, while the consolidated margin falls because the faster-growing or more profitable mix changes. The March year-end also makes its period timing different from calendar-year peers.
Gross margin of 66.9% describes the cost of goods sold, whereas the 20.9% operating margin includes selling, administration, marketing and other operating expenses. Comparing those two percentages as if they measured the same layer would produce a false ranking.
Hermès: strong growth with a separate gross-margin signal
Hermès reported both current-currency and constant-currency growth for 2024 and 2025, making the currency effect visible rather than hidden. Constant-currency growth was higher than current-currency growth in both years, so exchange translation reduced the reported euro increase. Gross-margin rates also moved upward. The cited releases provide recurring operating income for 2025 but do not state a directly comparable operating-margin series across both years; do not infer a trend that the disclosure does not establish.
The approximately 41.3% recurring margin is a simple division of the reported 2025 recurring operating income by revenue. It is useful as a transparency check, but differences in presentation and scope mean it should not be used as an automatic league-table winner against another company’s operating margin.
Step-by-step method for your own comparison
- Define the decision. Decide whether you are looking for fastest underlying demand, strongest current profitability, most resilient margin, or a balance of all three. A single winner cannot satisfy every objective.
- Choose the observation date. Record each company’s fiscal year-end and the publication date of the release. Put Richemont’s 31 March year-end on a separate line from calendar-year results.
- Collect primary figures. For every period, capture revenue, reported growth, operating or recurring-operating profit, the associated margin, gross margin, and the prior-period margin. Keep the exact labels used by the company.
- Build two growth columns. Enter reported growth in one column and organic, comparable or constant-currency growth in another. Write “not stated” when the company does not disclose a comparable number.
- Reconcile currencies. Use euros consistently, identify whether a figure is reported or translated, and avoid converting a constant-currency percentage into a euro amount without the company’s exchange-rate methodology.
- Calculate direction. Subtract the prior margin from the current margin in percentage points. Calculate a two-year or three-year reported-revenue CAGR separately from the latest organic rate.
- Split the business. Add categories, Houses, regions and channels. Record segment growth and margin where disclosed; Kering’s House divergence and Richemont’s jewellery-versus-watch contrast show why this step changes the interpretation.
- Explain the bridge. Attribute changes to price, volume, currency, raw-material costs, store openings, marketing, wholesale-to-direct mix and fixed-cost absorption only when the filing supports the explanation. Mark an interpretation as a hypothesis when the release does not quantify the driver.
- Write the verdict with conditions. State which company leads on the chosen measure, what could reverse that ranking, and which missing disclosure limits confidence.
How to interpret common result patterns
High growth and rising margin
This is the clearest combination, but test whether acquisitions, currency or a small comparison base caused the result. Confirm that organic or comparable growth supports the reported increase and that the margin definition is consistent.
High growth and falling margin
Look for store investment, logistics expansion, heavier marketing, wage inflation, raw-material costs or discounting. A temporary investment cycle can be rational if management explains the payback, but the margin decline is still a real cost to monitor.
Low growth and stable margin
This may indicate pricing power, disciplined supply and strong fixed-cost absorption even when volumes are soft. Check whether constant-currency growth is better than reported growth and whether a favorable category mix is masking weak parts of the portfolio.

Low growth and falling margin
This is the most concerning combination because weaker demand and negative operating leverage arrive together. Investigate inventory, markdowns, wholesale exposure, regional concentration and whether management is restructuring the brand.
High margin with no comparable growth disclosure
Do not assume the company is outperforming. A missing organic measure may simply reflect the reporting format. Use reported growth, currency context and segment evidence, and label the uncertainty.

Category mix
Jewellery, leather goods, watches, beauty, wines and spirits can carry different gross margins, price points and growth rates. A shift toward a lower-margin category can reduce the group margin even when total revenue rises.
Geography and China exposure
Regional demand, tourist spending and local currency movements can change both sales and profitability. China and wider Asia exposure should be shown by company or segment when disclosed; do not infer a group percentage from a single regional comment.
Pricing and volume
Price increases can lift reported revenue while volumes decline. Compare price, traffic and units where available, and treat revenue growth without volume evidence cautiously.
Direct retail versus wholesale
Direct stores and e-commerce provide more control over presentation and customer data but require rent, staff and capital. Wholesale can expand reach with a different cost structure. Direct-to-client share was not stated as a comparable group percentage in the cited figures, so do not fill that gap with an industry assumption.
Currency
Constant-currency growth isolates translation effects, while reported euro revenue reflects the rates used in the accounts. A company can post positive constant-currency growth and a much smaller current-currency increase, as the Hermès figures demonstrate.

Raw materials and fixed-cost absorption
Leather, precious metals, watch components, freight and energy affect gross margin. Rent, technology, store payroll and corporate staff are largely fixed over short periods, so weak sales can compress operating margin faster than gross margin.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Mixing fiscal years: Label the March year-end separately from calendar years.
- Comparing gross margin with operating margin: Put them in separate columns and explain the cost layers.
- Using organic growth as if it were reported growth: Preserve both labels and definitions.
- Ranking on one year only: Add a two-year or three-year reported-revenue CAGR.
- Ignoring segment dispersion: Break out Houses and categories when group results hide divergence.
- Calling a percentage-point move a percentage move: Use percentage points for margin changes.
- Filling undisclosed cells with estimates: Write “not stated” and identify the source period.
- Over-reading management language: Treat strategy statements as context, not as proof of financial improvement.
- Assuming currency is demand: Check constant-currency or comparable data before drawing a demand conclusion.
A practical scoring model
If you need one ranked view, score separate dimensions rather than blending incompatible percentages. For example, create four columns: latest reported growth, latest organic or comparable growth, current operating or recurring-operating margin, and margin change. Add a fifth column for disclosure quality, noting whether fiscal period, currency and segment data are clear.
Weight the columns according to the question. A growth-focused screen might give the largest weight to organic growth and a smaller weight to current margin. A quality-focused screen might emphasize margin level, margin direction and the stability of results across categories. Keep the raw figures beside every score so a reader can reproduce the judgment.
Do not award extra points merely because a company reports a gross margin; disclosure availability is useful, but gross margin is not interchangeable with operating margin. Likewise, do not penalize a company for having a March year-end; adjust the timeline and explain the overlap.
Bottom-line interpretation
The most defensible comparison is a matrix, not a single leaderboard: reported growth shows what reached the accounts, organic or constant-currency growth points to underlying demand, operating margin shows profitability after operating costs, and margin direction shows whether that profitability is improving. The 2024–2025 benchmark demonstrates why context matters: LVMH’s scale comes with a modest margin decline, Kering’s group result masks major House divergence, Richemont’s jewellery and watch businesses move in opposite directions, and Hermès reports strong constant-currency growth alongside a separately disclosed gross-margin improvement.
Choose the company that best fits your stated objective only after aligning periods, definitions and currencies. If a key comparable figure is not disclosed, make that limitation part of the conclusion instead of manufacturing precision.
