The most reliable comparison uses six separate tests: normalized revenue growth, comparable margins, deal quality, forward visibility, guidance accuracy and cash conversion. Revenue tells you what was recognized; bookings and deal wins indicate potential future work; backlog or cRPO shows what is contracted; margins show economics; and cash flow tests whether accounting earnings are turning into cash. A large contract cannot replace any of those checks.

Use the method below to compare companies even when their fiscal calendars, currencies, accounting measures and business mixes differ.

1. Normalize every company’s reporting basis before comparing numbers

A spreadsheet can make mismatched figures look precise. Before entering a single percentage, create a reporting-basis row for each company.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the period end and fiscal-year label. A company’s Q4 may end in a different month from another company’s Q4. Label the actual quarter-end dates and do not call two periods comparable merely because both are named “Q4.”
  2. Identify the currency and translation basis. Keep the reported-currency result, then record constant-currency growth if management provides it. A reported increase can reflect exchange rates rather than stronger demand.
  3. Separate organic growth from acquisition-driven growth. Acquired revenue can raise the consolidated number without showing that the legacy business grew.
  4. Mark the scope. Note whether a metric is consolidated, an operating segment, product-only, services-only or subscription-only. Segment results should not be compared with company-wide results.
  5. Label the accounting basis. Keep GAAP (or the applicable statutory basis) separate from non-GAAP measures. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has warned that companies can calculate similarly titled non-GAAP measures differently, so identical labels do not guarantee identical economics.

Put these qualifiers beside each number, not in a distant footnote. A table that says “18% growth” without saying reported or constant currency, organic or acquired, and consolidated or segment-level is incomplete.

2. Start with revenue, then test its quality

Capture both year-over-year (YoY) and sequential growth. YoY reduces the effect of seasonality; sequential growth shows the latest direction but can be distorted by quarter length, holidays, project milestones or normal fiscal-season patterns.

What to collect

  • Total revenue and the exact quarter-end date.
  • YoY and sequential percentage changes.
  • Reported and constant-currency growth, when both are disclosed.
  • Organic growth and the contribution from acquisitions.
  • Mix by product versus services, subscription versus project work, geography and customer industry.
  • Any change caused by divestitures, reclassifications or a different consolidation perimeter.

Why mix matters

Two companies can grow at the same rate while taking very different risks. Subscription revenue is generally recognized over the contract term, while a project may be recognized as milestones are delivered. Product sales can be large but lower-margin than implementation or support services. A geographic concentration can make one result more exposed to a particular currency or regional economy.

Cisco Systems’ Q4 FY2026 release illustrates why the headline number needs context: it reported $17.3 billion in revenue and 18% YoY growth, alongside GAAP and non-GAAP operating-margin figures. The same release reported product orders up 35% YoY and $4 billion of AI-infrastructure orders during the quarter. Revenue describes what was recognized in Q4; the order data describes demand entering the pipeline. Neither should be substituted for the other.

Useful calculations

For each company, calculate:

  • YoY growth: (current-quarter revenue ÷ year-ago-quarter revenue) − 1.
  • Sequential growth: (current-quarter revenue ÷ prior-quarter revenue) − 1, with quarter-length and seasonal effects noted.
  • Organic growth: the company’s disclosed organic rate, rather than a homemade estimate that may use a different definition.
  • Growth contribution: the percentage points attributable to acquisitions, currency and divestitures when management provides a bridge.

Do not rank a company on revenue growth until you can explain how much came from demand, price, currency, acquisitions and timing.

3. Compare margins only on the same basis

Margin is revenue left after a specified cost layer. Gross margin describes the cost of goods or delivery; operating margin includes operating expenses; net margin also includes financing, taxes and other below-operating items. For an IT-services comparison, operating margin is often the most useful starting point, but only when scope and accounting basis match.

Build a like-for-like margin table

Field What to record Question it answers
Gross margin GAAP/statutory and, if supplied, adjusted gross margin How efficiently does the company deliver its products or services?
Operating margin GAAP/statutory and non-GAAP, each in a separate column How much operating profit remains after selling, research and administrative costs?
Direction Current margin minus year-ago and prior-quarter margin, in basis points Is profitability expanding or contracting?
Bridge items Restructuring, acquisition costs, foreign exchange, utilization, wage changes and mix Is the movement recurring or one-time?
Scope Consolidated or segment; services, product or subscription Are the two percentages actually comparable?

One basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point: a move from 16.0% to 16.5% is an increase of 50 basis points. Always show the starting and ending margin so a basis-point change cannot be mistaken for a percentage change.

Explain one-off effects instead of ignoring them

An acquisition can dilute reported margin even when management expects long-term synergies. ServiceNow said an acquisition was expected to create approximately a 75-basis-point FY2026 operating-margin headwind and approximately a 125-basis-point headwind in Q2 2026. That disclosure is a reminder to distinguish the reported result from the expected underlying effect; do not silently “adjust” the number unless the company supplies a clearly defined reconciliation.

Keep GAAP with GAAP and non-GAAP with non-GAAP. If one company reports a non-GAAP operating margin and another reports only GAAP, mark the comparison as incomplete rather than blending the figures. List the exclusions in each reconciliation: stock-based compensation, amortization, restructuring and acquisition costs can materially change the result.

4. Treat bookings and deal wins as leading indicators, not revenue

A booking is an agreement or order accepted during a period. Revenue is recognized as the company delivers products or services under the relevant accounting rules. The interval between those events can be weeks, years or never if a contract is cancelled, resized or delayed.

Questions to ask about every large deal

  • Size: Is the value total contract value (TCV), annual recurring revenue, first-year revenue, or an undisclosed estimate?
  • Timing: When does delivery begin, and when does management expect revenue recognition?
  • Recurring content: How much is subscription, managed service or renewal work versus one-time implementation or hardware?
  • Duration: Is the contract one year, multi-year or subject to annual termination?
  • Concentration: Would losing one customer or vertical materially change the outlook?
  • Conversion: Does the award enter backlog, cRPO or another contracted-revenue measure, and how quickly has similar work converted historically?

Wipro reported $3,455 million of total bookings and $1,440 million of large-deal bookings in Q4 FY2026, with an IT-services operating margin of 17.3%. The booking totals indicate sales activity and potential future work; the 17.3% margin describes the economics of the services reported for that period. They answer different questions and should be displayed in separate scorecard columns.

Order growth can also lead recognized revenue. Cisco reported product orders up 35% YoY and $4 billion of AI-infrastructure orders in Q4 FY2026 while reporting $17.3 billion of quarterly revenue. Those orders may be fulfilled over later periods; the release does not make them equivalent to Q4 revenue.

5. Use book-to-bill to test conversion and segment demand

Book-to-bill compares bookings with revenue for a stated period. A ratio above 1.0x means bookings exceeded recognized revenue during that period; below 1.0x means recognized revenue exceeded new bookings. It is a flow measure, not a guarantee of future revenue, and definitions can differ by segment.

DXC Technology FY2026 segment Book-to-bill Segment margin How to read it
Consulting and Engineering Services 1.10x 10.3% Bookings exceeded reported revenue for the period; compare the ratio with the segment’s margin and backlog.
Global Infrastructure Services 0.94x 6.8% Bookings were below recognized revenue; investigate whether this is timing, market pressure or a deliberate portfolio shift.
Insurance 0.76x 10.1% Bookings were well below recognized revenue; assess the risk to later-period revenue if the pattern persists.

DXC’s segment figures show why consolidated results can conceal diverging demand. Compare each segment’s book-to-bill with its revenue trend, margin, backlog and contract duration. A high ratio in a small segment does not automatically offset weak bookings in the company’s largest segment.

6. Check backlog, cRPO and recurring-revenue visibility

Visibility measures how much future work is contracted or expected to recur. Depending on the business, look for backlog, current remaining performance obligations (cRPO), recurring revenue, renewal or retention rates and contract duration.

How to interpret the measures

  • Backlog: contracted work not yet recognized as revenue; ask how much is expected within the next 12 months.
  • cRPO: contracted revenue expected to be recognized in the near term; confirm the company’s definition and period.
  • Recurring revenue: subscription or managed-service revenue that renews, but still carries churn, pricing and renewal risk.
  • Renewal or retention: evidence of customer durability; check whether the rate is gross or net and whether it includes expansion.
  • Contract duration: longer duration can improve planning but may also lock in prices before costs rise.

ServiceNow reported cRPO growth and subscription-revenue guidance, while HCLTech’s investor materials highlight bookings and total contract value from new deal wins. Record the precise definition, currency, period and growth basis for each measure. Do not compare a cRPO percentage with a TCV dollar figure as though they were the same type of visibility.

7. Test guidance credibility and cash conversion

Guidance versus actual results

Guidance is a forecast, not a result. Save the previous quarter’s revenue, margin and growth outlook, then compare it with the actual report. Record whether the company met, exceeded or missed the midpoint and whether it changed the full-year range.

  1. Copy the original guidance range and date into your scorecard.
  2. Use the same currency, accounting basis and constant-currency convention for the actual result.
  3. Calculate the difference from the midpoint and identify whether the variance came from demand, delivery timing, currency, acquisitions or cost control.
  4. Track revisions across several quarters. Repeated beats with raised guidance and repeated misses with lowered guidance convey more than one quarter’s variance.

Cash conversion

Compare operating cash flow (OCF) with net income and revenue. A simple cash-conversion ratio is OCF ÷ net income; interpret it with working-capital timing, customer advances, tax payments and restructuring cash costs in view. Free-cash-flow margin (free cash flow ÷ revenue) adds the effect of capital expenditure.

Wipro reported Q4 FY2026 operating cash flow at 90.1% of net income and FY2026 operating cash flow at 112.6% of net income. The quarterly and full-year figures differ because working-capital movements can reverse between periods. Use both horizons rather than declaring earnings high- or low-quality from one quarter alone.

8. Assemble a practical comparison scorecard

Axis Collect Decision question
Growth YoY and sequential revenue; reported, constant-currency and organic rates Is demand growing after separating currency, acquisitions and timing?
Margin Gross and operating margin; GAAP/non-GAAP label; bridge items Are economics improving on a comparable basis?
Deal quality Total bookings, large-deal bookings, TCV, orders and book-to-bill How much demand is new, recurring, durable and likely to convert?
Visibility Backlog, cRPO, renewal or retention, recurring revenue and duration How much future revenue is contracted or repeatable?
Execution Prior guidance versus actuals and estimate revisions Can management forecast and deliver consistently?
Cash quality OCF, free-cash-flow margin and OCF-to-net-income conversion Are reported profits becoming cash?

Use a numeric scoring system only after recording the raw facts. If you assign weights, state them explicitly: a growth-oriented comparison may weight organic revenue and bookings more heavily, while a mature-services comparison may emphasize cash conversion, renewal rates and margin stability. The score is a decision aid, not a substitute for reading the reconciliations and contract disclosures.

9. Common comparison errors and how to correct them

Comparing fiscal quarters by label alone

Symptom: One company’s “Q1” covers a different set of months or has a different number of days. Fix: show period-end dates, label the mismatch and use trailing-twelve-month figures when seasonality makes a single quarter misleading.

Mixing reported and constant-currency growth

Symptom: A company appears to grow faster solely because currency translation helped it. Fix: put reported and constant-currency rates in separate columns and explain the gap.

Comparing GAAP with adjusted margin

Symptom: One margin excludes stock compensation or restructuring while the other does not. Fix: compare statutory with statutory first; then make a separate adjusted comparison with every exclusion listed.

Calling a contract announcement immediate revenue

Symptom: A headline TCV is added to the current quarter’s sales forecast. Fix: identify start date, delivery schedule, recurring portion, cancellation terms and backlog or cRPO treatment.

Using one large deal as proof of durable demand

Symptom: A record award obscures customer concentration or weak smaller bookings. Fix: examine the distribution of deals, renewal rates, segment book-to-bill and conversion history.

Ignoring cash and guidance

Symptom: A company wins on revenue and margin but repeatedly misses its own outlook or fails to convert earnings to cash. Fix: add guidance variance and OCF-to-net-income conversion to the same scorecard.

10. A repeatable quarterly workflow

  1. Collect the primary release and filing. Save the quarter-end date, currency, accounting basis, segment definitions and management guidance before copying figures.
  2. Fill the normalization fields. Mark reported versus constant currency, organic versus acquired growth, and consolidated versus segment scope.
  3. Enter revenue and mix. Calculate YoY and sequential changes, then annotate product, services, subscription, geography and acquisition effects.
  4. Enter margins and bridges. Keep GAAP and non-GAAP separate; calculate basis-point changes and list one-off items.
  5. Enter bookings and conversion data. Distinguish total bookings, large deals, TCV, orders, book-to-bill, backlog and cRPO.
  6. Check visibility. Record recurring revenue, retention, contract duration and the portion expected to convert within 12 months when disclosed.
  7. Score execution. Compare the prior guidance range with the actual result and note revisions.
  8. Check cash quality. Calculate OCF-to-net-income and free-cash-flow margin, while explaining working-capital timing.
  9. Write the conclusion from the evidence. State which company has stronger current growth, better economics, more durable visibility, more credible execution and better cash conversion. If the metrics conflict, describe the trade-off instead of forcing a single winner.

The resulting comparison answers six different questions without confusing them: what grew, how profitable it was, what new work was won, how much future work is visible, whether management delivered its forecast and whether profits became cash.
