Apple’s published tests give the iPhone 18 Pro Max more battery headroom than the iPhone 18 Pro, but those “up to” figures are controlled-test maximums—not a promise of how long either phone will last for you. Compare the models against your screen-on habits, apps, signal conditions, charging routine, and preferred phone size.
What are the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max battery estimates?
Apple lists higher maximum battery estimates for the iPhone 18 Pro Max in each of these categories. The figures are useful for comparing the phones under Apple’s test conditions, not for predicting an individual day.
| Apple’s published test category | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Up to 24 hours | Up to 30 hours |
| Downloaded video playback | Up to 36 hours | Up to 45 hours |
| Streamed video playback | Up to 33 hours | Up to 40 hours |
These are Apple’s published maximum test results for the current models, not guaranteed daily runtimes. See Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max technical specifications and the Apple Support iPhone 18 Pro Max tech specs for the figures and test notes. Apple says actual battery life varies with use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and other factors.
What do Apple’s battery tests represent?
Typical use
Apple says its typical-use testing used preproduction phones and a representative profile based on median usage across iPhone users. The profile combines messaging, photos, music, social media, video streaming, games, web browsing, and navigation. It gives the models a common comparison point, but your mix of activities may be very different.

Video playback
Apple describes repeating an HDR movie under specified settings. Its notes distinguish downloaded playback from streamed playback and describe conditions such as Wi-Fi and paired headphones. That controlled setup does not reproduce every person’s brightness level, cellular reception, app mix, or routine. Apple’s technical specifications warn: “Battery life varies by use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength and other factors; actual results may vary based on usage.”
How should you compare battery life for your own day?
1. Start with time away from a charger
Think about your longest typical stretch without access to power: a commute, travel day, field work, or a full day away from an outlet. The Pro Max’s higher published maximums are more relevant if you regularly need extra headroom through a long day. If you can charge during the day, that difference may matter less to your routine.

2. Account for what you do on screen
Video streaming, games, navigation, camera use, and extended browsing involve different patterns of use than mostly messaging or audio playback. Apple’s typical-use profile includes a mix of activities, but it cannot tell you how either phone will perform with your particular proportions. Use your own routine as the comparison rather than treating one test category as a forecast.
3. Consider signal and background activity
Cellular coverage, notifications, background tasks, and extended on-screen activity can all affect battery use. Weak or inconsistent reception may make your day unlike a test conducted under specified conditions. Apple’s guide to iPhone battery usage and health explains how to review app, system, screen, background, and cellular-coverage activity.

Are the published figures enough to predict which one will last longer for you?
No. Apple’s specifications establish that the Pro Max has higher maximum results in these test categories, but they do not establish a personalized runtime or an independently measured, apples-to-apples result for your usage. Your configuration, activity, signal, and background processes all affect what you experience.
Regional configurations can also differ: Apple notes that some eSIM-only models have larger batteries and additional video-playback capacity. Check the specifications for the exact model and region you plan to buy. Apple’s launch announcement provides regional eSIM configuration context.
