The cheapest investment platform is the one with the lowest total cost for your balance, trades, funds, currencies, account type, and holding period—not the one advertising the lowest dealing commission. Make a like-for-like model that includes platform, dealing, fund, foreign-exchange, tax, cash, advice, transfer, exit, and security costs. Then verify the legal entity, custody arrangement, regulator, and compensation scheme separately. A platform can be inexpensive yet unsuitable, or regulated yet unable to protect you from investment-market losses.
Provider tariffs, fund menus, tax rules, protection limits, and regulatory proposals change. Date every figure you record and recheck it before opening or transferring an account.
Why there is no universal cheapest or safest platform
Two investors can use the same platform and pay very different amounts. A percentage platform fee may be modest for a small balance but expensive after years of growth. A fixed account charge can dominate a small portfolio. Frequent traders may care more about dealing and foreign-exchange charges, while a buy-and-hold investor may pay most through fund expenses and the platform fee. A tax-advantaged wrapper, retirement account, or taxable account can also have different tariffs and rules.

Service models matter as well. A self-directed account, guided portfolio, robo-managed service, and full advice relationship may charge different combinations of platform, fund, advice, and transaction fees. Investment availability, transfers, cash treatment, execution controls, and support can justify a higher price for one investor and not for another.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) says consumers should be able to identify and understand investment charges so they can choose the channel and products that fit them. Yet its consumer review, conducted in 2022 and updated on its website in 2025, found that 56% of surveyed consumers said finding the total cost on their platform was easy, while 14% found it fairly or very difficult. Only 51% said comparing total costs between platforms was easy; 28% found that comparison fairly or very difficult.
The FCA’s July 2026 disclosure proposal also reported that 30% of non-advised platform users did not know how much they were charged. Those figures are a reason to build your own comparison rather than rely on a headline such as zero commission.
1. Define the exact use case before collecting prices
Write down the assumptions once and use the same assumptions for every platform. If a provider uses tiered pricing, run separate calculations for small, medium, and large balances rather than assuming one rate applies everywhere.

| Country and regulator | Residence, governing jurisdiction, and relevant regulator | Taxes, compensation schemes, disclosure rules, and eligible products differ by jurisdiction. |
| Account wrapper | Taxable account, individual savings wrapper, retirement account, or another local structure | Each wrapper can have separate fees, dealing rules, withdrawal restrictions, and tax treatment. |
| Starting balance | Amount invested on day one | Percentage fees scale with assets; fixed fees have a larger impact on smaller balances. |
| Contributions and withdrawals | Amount, frequency, and dates | Regular payments may trigger dealing, conversion, or account charges and change the balance on which percentages are applied. |
| Trading pattern | Number, size, market, and order type of trades each year | Dealing, spread, execution, telephone, and transaction-tax costs depend on activity. |
| Holdings | Specific funds, ETFs, shares, or managed portfolios | Ongoing fund charges, entry or exit charges, and availability differ by product. |
| Currencies | Base currency, assets traded in other currencies, and expected conversions | Foreign-exchange spreads or explicit conversion fees can be material even when trading is advertised as free. |
| Holding period | Expected one-, five-, ten-, and twenty-year periods | Recurring charges compound over time and one-off transfer or exit fees are spread differently over short and long periods. |
2. Inventory every charge, not just the dealing commission
Use the provider’s current fee schedule and account or wrapper tariff, then reconcile them with the fund prospectus or key information document (KID), a sample statement, and a trade confirmation. The FCA Handbook’s disclosure categories are one-off entry costs, one-off exit costs, ongoing costs, transaction costs, and performance fees or carried interests. The practical list below turns those categories into line items for your spreadsheet.
Platform or wrapper fee
This is commonly a percentage of assets, a fixed subscription, a tiered schedule, or a combination. Record the rate at each balance band, the minimum and maximum charge, billing frequency, and whether cash is included in the calculation. Check whether different wrappers have different allowances or caps.
Dealing and execution costs
Record the commission for each market and order type, plus telephone-dealing charges, regular-investment charges, and any minimum ticket. A zero-commission headline does not necessarily remove the bid-ask spread, venue or execution-related costs, or taxes charged on a transaction. Ask how the platform presents those costs on a confirmation.
Fund and ETF costs
Enter the ongoing charge for every fund or ETF, along with any entry, exit, performance, or carried-interest charge. Some costs are deducted inside the fund rather than billed by the platform, so they may not appear as a separate account transaction. Use the product’s prospectus or KID, not a generic platform estimate.
Foreign exchange
Record both an explicit conversion fee and the spread built into the exchange rate. Note whether conversions occur when buying, selling, receiving dividends, or withdrawing. A platform that is cheap for domestic trades can be costly for an international portfolio.

Taxes and transaction levies
List stamp duty, financial-transaction taxes, exchange levies, withholding taxes, and any local charges that apply to the market and account wrapper. Tax treatment is jurisdiction- and product-specific; do not assume a tax-free wrapper removes every transaction levy or fund-level tax.
Advice or managed-service fee
If a person or automated service selects or rebalances investments, record its percentage or fixed fee separately from the platform and fund charges. Check whether the service fee is charged on cash, whether it has a minimum, and whether rebalancing creates additional dealing or foreign-exchange costs.
Cash, inactivity, custody, and service charges
Record fees for uninvested cash, account inactivity, paper statements, special requests, market-data packages, premium dealing channels, and other optional services. Also record the interest rate paid on idle cash and whether the platform keeps a margin between the rate it earns and the rate credited to you. Cash interest is an economic benefit or cost and belongs in the comparison even when it is not labelled a fee.
Transfers and exits
List outgoing transfer charges per holding, account-closure fees, in-specie transfer limitations, sale-and-repurchase costs, and any charge for withdrawing cash. An apparently cheap account can become expensive if you later move a portfolio or need to sell holdings that cannot be transferred.
| Cost group | Questions to answer | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One-off entry | Is there an initial account, product, or subscription charge? | Account tariff, product prospectus, and terms. |
| One-off exit | What does closure or withdrawal cost, and is an exit fee explicit? | Tariff, transfer form, and account terms. |
| Ongoing | What percentage or fixed amount recurs, and what balance is used? | Platform tariff and statement. |
| Transaction | What commission, spread, levy, and conversion cost applies to each trade? | Dealing schedule and trade confirmation. |
| Product | What ongoing, entry, exit, performance, or carried-interest charges are deducted inside the fund? | Fund prospectus or KID. |
| Service | What advice, managed-service, custody, data, telephone, or paper charges apply? | Service agreement and optional-services tariff. |
3. Calculate a fair, like-for-like comparison
Use identical investment performance assumptions for every platform. You are isolating fees, not predicting returns. A simple model can start with:
annual platform cost = asset balance × platform percentage + fixed account charges
Then add dealing, foreign-exchange, taxes, fund expenses, advice, and other charges according to the dates and amounts in your use case. For tiered pricing, apply each band to the portion of assets that falls within that band, if that is how the tariff works; do not apply the highest rate to the entire balance unless the provider’s terms say so.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Enter the case. Add country, wrapper, starting balance, contributions, withdrawals, trades, holdings, currencies, and holding period.
- Enter every tariff line. Keep percentage, fixed, per-trade, per-conversion, and product-level costs in separate columns so a zero in one column does not hide a charge in another.
- Model one, five, ten, and twenty years. Apply the same assumed investment return, contribution schedule, and withdrawals to each provider. Show both pounds or dollars paid and the ending balance after charges in your own currency.
- Test balance and activity bands. Run low, medium, and high balances and low, medium, and high trading frequencies. This reveals where a fixed fee stops mattering or a percentage fee becomes dominant.
- Check marginal actions. Calculate the incremental cost of one additional trade, one currency conversion, a transfer of a single holding, and a withdrawal. Marginal costs often determine the best platform for an active investor.
- Reconcile the output. Compare your model with a sample statement or confirmation. Ask the provider to explain any unexplained line item before treating the tariff as complete.
Keep a dated copy of every tariff and document used. If a provider changes a fee, rerun the affected scenarios rather than editing history and losing the comparison baseline.

4. See why small recurring fees matter over long periods
Recurring charges reduce the money that remains invested and therefore reduce future growth on that money. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance illustrates this effect with a hypothetical $100,000 investment growing at 4% annually for 20 years: approximately $208,000 with a 0.25% annual fee, $198,000 with a 0.50% annual fee, and $179,000 with a 1.00% annual fee.
Those figures are an illustration, not a forecast or a promise of return. They exclude the reader’s actual contributions, withdrawals, taxes, fund charges, and platform-specific pricing. Recreate the calculation with your own assumptions and keep platform and product fees separate so you can see which one drives the difference.
A percentage fee can look tiny in a single month while costing a substantial amount over decades. Conversely, paying a slightly higher percentage may be rational if it provides a wrapper, investment, transfer, accessibility, or support feature you would otherwise have to buy elsewhere. The model should expose that trade-off rather than declare a winner from one rate.

5. Treat cash, currency, and tax as first-class costs
Uninvested cash
Record the balance likely to sit in cash, the interest rate credited, how often it changes, and whether a fee is deducted from cash. Two platforms with identical investment fees can produce different outcomes if one pays materially less interest on idle money. Verify whether cash is held in a bank deposit, a client-money account, or another arrangement because that affects both return and protection.
Foreign exchange
Use the actual conversion path in your portfolio: funding the account, buying an overseas asset, receiving a dividend, selling, and withdrawing. Enter the stated spread or fee for each conversion and do not assume that a displayed exchange rate is the interbank rate. If the platform converts automatically, find out when and at what rate.
Taxes and wrappers
Compare accounts under the tax rules that apply to your residence and wrapper. Record transaction taxes and withholding taxes even when the platform does not describe them as fees. A tax advantage can outweigh a modest tariff difference, but eligibility, annual limits, reporting, and withdrawal rules must be verified with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser.
6. Verify what is protected if the firm fails
Protection is a separate question from price and market performance. Start with the exact legal entity named in the account agreement, not only the consumer-facing brand. Check that entity on the relevant regulator’s current register and note its authorization status, permissions, and jurisdiction.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Identify the entity. Record the legal name, company number if supplied, registered jurisdiction, and the entity actually holding your account.
- Check authorization. Confirm the entity and the specific service on the regulator’s register. FCA consumer guidance warns that not every product or service sold by a regulated firm is covered by FCA regulation.
- Understand custody. Ask how securities are held, whether they are segregated from the firm’s own assets, how fractional interests are recorded, and what happens during reconciliation or insolvency.
- Separate securities from cash. Find out which protection regime applies to investments and which applies to uninvested cash. Limits and eligibility can differ by jurisdiction, product, entity, and event.
- Record the compensation scheme. Write down the scheme administrator, covered event, eligibility conditions, and current limit from its own rules. Do not infer coverage from the word regulated or protected.
- Find the complaints route. Note the firm’s internal procedure, response times, ombudsman or alternative-dispute body, and any court or regulator escalation route.
Compensation arrangements generally address firm failure or eligible misconduct under scheme rules; they do not reimburse losses caused by a fund, share, bond, or currency falling in market value. A regulated platform can fail while the assets are segregated and later returned, but the timing, shortfall process, and eligible compensation depend on the legal structure and local rules. Use the account’s entity and wrapper when checking those rules.

7. Compare capabilities alongside total cost
Once total costs and protection are clear, compare whether each platform can actually support your plan. A low headline price is irrelevant if it prevents the investments or account actions you need.
| Comparison axis | Checks to make |
|---|---|
| Investment range | Required funds, ETFs, shares, bonds, fractional dealing, exchanges, and regular-investment options. |
| Wrappers and tax features | Availability of the account types you need, transfer rules, contribution limits, and reporting. |
| Transfers and withdrawals | In-specie support, transfer timing, partial withdrawals, sale requirements, and charges per holding. |
| Execution and dealing controls | Order types, dealing windows, price limits, settlement information, confirmations, and error-correction process. |
| Cash and custody | Interest treatment, client-money arrangements, asset segregation, and treatment of fractional holdings. |
| Service and accessibility | Support hours, phone or chat availability, accessibility features, language, and help for vulnerable customers. |
| Security | Multi-factor authentication, device controls, withdrawal verification, alerts, session management, and account-recovery process. |
| Automation and tools | Recurring investments, rebalancing, tax reports, portfolio tools, statements, and the quality of available investment analysis. |
| Protection scope | Legal entity, regulator, custody model, compensation scheme, and complaints administrator. |
Score each item against your needs before applying a price preference. For example, a platform without the wrapper or fund you require is not a low-cost alternative; it is a non-option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Use documents and statements to uncover hidden charges
Request or download four documents for each candidate: the current fee schedule, the account or wrapper terms, the prospectus or KID for every intended fund, and a sample statement or trade confirmation. FCA good practice calls for a single comprehensive list, calculators or worked examples, clear explanations, and an explicit statement about exit fees.
- Search for separate sections covering cash, foreign exchange, telephone dealing, transfers, withdrawals, paper statements, and inactivity.
- Check whether a percentage is quoted inclusive or exclusive of fund, advice, or transaction costs.
- Confirm whether listed rates are recurring, introductory, tiered, capped, or subject to a minimum.
- Match the product name and share class in the KID to the instrument you would actually buy; similar names can have different charges.
- Compare the statement’s line items with the tariff. An unexplained debit should be resolved in writing before you fund the account.
Scattered pages, legalistic descriptions, unexplained cash or conversion deductions, and an absent exit-fee explanation are warning signs about transparency. They are not proof of misconduct, but they justify asking precise questions and retaining the answers.
9. A repeatable decision framework
After calculating costs and checking protection, make the decision in this order:
- Eliminate non-fits. Remove platforms that cannot provide your required wrapper, investments, currencies, transfers, or access needs.
- Reject unresolved protection gaps. Do not open an account until the legal entity, authorization, custody, compensation scheme, and complaints route are documented.
- Compare total cost for your base case. Use the same balance, contributions, withdrawals, trades, holdings, and period for each remaining option.
- Stress-test the result. Check low and high balances, low and high activity, extra currency conversions, a transfer, and a withdrawal. Note when the ranking changes.
- Inspect marginal costs. If two platforms are close, compare the cost of the next trade, conversion, contribution, or transfer rather than rounding both to a headline percentage.
- Choose the lowest-cost adequate service. Prefer the option that meets your requirements with clear, verifiable pricing and acceptable protection, not the lowest isolated fee.
10. Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
Comparing commission alone
Problem: A 0% dealing rate is compared with a percentage platform fee, while fund, spread, conversion, and tax costs are ignored.
Fix: Calculate the complete annual and transaction cost for identical holdings and activity.
Using a provider’s example without your balance
Problem: A worked example may use a balance or trading pattern unlike yours.
Fix: Replace every input with your starting balance, contributions, withdrawals, trades, currencies, and holding period; run several balance bands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIgnoring fixed charges on a small account
Problem: A low percentage can coexist with a minimum monthly or annual fee.
Fix: Divide fixed charges by your balance to see their effective percentage, then include them in the scenario total.

Missing fund-level expenses
Problem: The platform displays its own fee but the fund deducts an ongoing charge internally.
Fix: Read the exact fund prospectus or KID and add the product charge to the platform charge.
Assuming regulation guarantees returns
Problem: The words regulated or protected are treated as insurance against falling prices.
Fix: Verify the entity and scheme rules and explain separately what happens to client assets, cash, and market losses.
Forgetting the exit
Problem: The cheapest opening tariff becomes costly when you transfer or close the account.
Fix: Model a partial transfer, a full transfer, and a cash withdrawal before committing.
Using stale tariffs
Problem: A saved comparison uses a promotional rate or an old wrapper rule.
Fix: Date the tariff, retain the source document, and rerun the model whenever the provider or regulator changes the terms.
11. Keep the comparison current
Review the spreadsheet at least when you change platform, wrapper, fund, currency mix, contribution level, or trading frequency. Also review it after a provider announces a tariff change, a regulator updates disclosure requirements, or a protection scheme changes its rules. Record the date, legal entity, account type, tariff version, and assumptions beside each result.
The FCA’s 2026 proposal to present distributor and product costs consistently may change how platforms display charges. Until any new presentation is implemented, continue checking both the platform’s own costs and costs deducted inside products. Clear disclosure is useful, but it does not replace a calculation based on your actual portfolio.
A sound comparison therefore has two outputs: a dated total-cost model and a protection-and-fit checklist. Together they answer the questions that a headline commission cannot: what you will really pay, what you can buy and move, how cash and currency are treated, and what protections apply if the firm or product fails.
