The reliable way to compare India Cements with UltraTech, Shree Cement and other listed producers is to normalize every quarterly figure before judging growth. Put all companies on the same reporting period, consolidation basis and units; then compare cement volume, realization per tonne, EBITDA per tonne, costs, cash generation, leverage and capacity execution. Revenue growth by itself cannot tell you whether performance came from selling more cement, charging higher prices or temporarily benefiting from lower costs.
What a quarterly cement comparison should answer
A useful comparison answers five linked questions:
- Did the company sell more cement, and was the increase broad-based or limited to a region?
- Did selling prices or product mix lift realization per tonne?
- Did power, fuel, freight and other operating costs rise or fall faster than revenue?
- Did the resulting EBITDA and profit improvement convert into operating cash flow?
- Is the balance sheet strong enough to fund announced capacity, or is growth dependent on additional borrowing?
India Cements has significant regional exposure, so an all-India average can be misleading. Keep geography visible in the comparison and explain when a peer’s operating area, product mix or scale makes its numbers less comparable.
Choose a stable, relevant peer set
Use the same peer group each quarter unless you clearly document an exclusion. A practical listed set for India Cements is UltraTech Cement, Shree Cement, Ambuja Cements, ACC, Dalmia Bharat, JK Cement and Ramco Cements.

|---|---|---|
| UltraTech Cement | Large-scale benchmark for volume, utilization, cost and capacity execution | Its size and nationwide footprint can produce lower unit costs than a regional producer |
| Shree Cement | Useful for profitability, efficiency and balance-sheet comparisons | Check product mix, geography and the exact scope of each disclosure |
| Ambuja Cements | Provides another large-company reference for pricing, costs and expansion | Verify whether figures are standalone or consolidated and how subsidiaries are treated |
| ACC | Offers a separate operating and regional benchmark | Do not assume its reporting perimeter matches Ambuja or UltraTech |
| Dalmia Bharat | Useful for regional growth, utilization and cost trends | Geographic mix can make quarter-to-quarter price comparisons differ from India Cements |
| JK Cement | Helps compare a diversified regional footprint and expansion cycle | Separate grey cement, white cement and other disclosed businesses where possible |
| Ramco Cements | Useful regional peer for volume, realization and operating-cost analysis | Keep its regional exposure distinct from national producers |
Do not change the peer set merely because one company has an unusually good or bad quarter. Exclude a company only when geography, product mix, scale, reporting scope or a structural event makes the comparison misleading, and state the reason.

Lock the reporting basis before entering numbers
Most bad comparisons are caused by mixing unlike figures. Create a header for every quarter and company with the period ended, publication date, currency and units, reporting basis, restatements and exceptional items.
- Download the company documents. Obtain the latest India Cements quarterly release, investor presentation, earnings-call material and exchange filing. Download the same-period documents for every selected peer.
- Identify the period. Record the quarter ended and publication date. A result published later is not a later operating period.
- Record the scope. Mark each number as standalone or consolidated. Consolidated results may include subsidiaries, while standalone results may not; they are not interchangeable.
- Record units exactly. Note whether revenue and profit are in rupees crore, million or another unit, and whether volume is in tonnes, lakh tonnes or million tonnes.
- Check restatements. Use the restated comparative when a filing changes the prior-period presentation, and retain a note explaining the change.
- Separate exceptional items. Keep recurring operating performance apart from gains, losses, impairment, restructuring or other exceptional entries.
NSE IndAS filings are particularly useful for scope control because they identify the reporting quarter, unaudited status, standalone or consolidated basis, revenue, power and fuel expense, freight and forwarding expense, finance costs, exceptional items, tax and debt-service ratios. Shree Cement investor materials also provide long-run fields such as production capacity, revenue, EBITDA, net profit, net worth and market capitalisation, alongside links to quarterly results and annual reports.
Metrics that belong in the quarterly worksheet
Build one row per company and quarter. Record reported values first; add calculations in separate columns so a reader can distinguish disclosure from arithmetic.
| Area | Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Volume | Cement volume sold; clinker volume where disclosed | Demand capture, dispatches and the relationship between clinker production and cement sales |
| Revenue | Net sales | Combined effect of volume, realization and business mix |
| Pricing | Realization per tonne | Average revenue earned for each comparable tonne |
| Profitability | EBITDA or PBIDT | Operating earnings before financing and tax; use the company’s own definition |
| Unit economics | EBITDA per tonne and EBITDA margin | Profit generated by each tonne and by each rupee of sales |
| Costs | Power and fuel; freight and forwarding; other operating cost | Whether input inflation, logistics or efficiency changed the result |
| Assets | Capacity, utilization and commissioning progress | Available supply, plant productivity and the timing of future growth |
| Financial risk | Net debt and finance cost | Leverage burden and the cost of funding expansion |
| Cash and investment | Operating cash flow and capex | Whether accounting profit is becoming cash and how much is being reinvested |
| Below operating profit | PAT, tax and exceptional items | What shareholders actually earned after financing, tax and one-off effects |
Calculate realization and EBITDA per tonne correctly
Per-tonne measures are powerful only when numerator and denominator match. If the filing reports cement revenue and cement volume for the same scope and period, calculate:
Realization per tonne = matching cement revenue ÷ matching cement volume
EBITDA per tonne = matching EBITDA ÷ matching cement volume
For example, do not divide consolidated revenue by a standalone cement volume, or total-company EBITDA by grey-cement volume if the numerator includes white cement, ready-mix concrete or other businesses. If a matching figure is not disclosed, write “not stated” rather than estimating it.

Also distinguish a reported operating EBITDA per tonne from your own calculation. The company’s measure may use a particular volume definition, exclude a business or adjust for an item that is not obvious from the headline statements. Preserve the label and explain any difference.
Read volume and utilization before revenue
Volume shows whether the company captured demand. Compare cement volume year on year and sequentially, and add clinker volume when disclosed. A rise in clinker production with flat cement dispatches can indicate inventory building rather than end-market strength.
Capacity utilization puts volume in context. A producer with higher sales but much more installed capacity may be using its assets less efficiently than a smaller peer. Record installed capacity, the utilization percentage and whether a shutdown, maintenance event or commissioning affected the denominator.
Geography matters. India Cements’ regional exposure means a southern-market demand or pricing move may not resemble a national producer’s average. When a peer reports nationwide volume growth, explain that the geographic mix is different instead of treating the percentage as directly comparable.
Separate price, mix and volume in the revenue bridge
Revenue growth is the combined result of volume, realization and the mix of products and markets. Start with a bridge:
- Compare current-quarter and prior-year cement volume.
- Compare realization per tonne on a matching basis.
- Multiply the volume change by the prior-period realization to approximate the volume contribution.
- Multiply current-period volume by the realization change to approximate the price or mix contribution.
- Reconcile the two contributions to reported revenue, allowing for rounding and businesses not included in the per-tonne numerator.
Use “price or mix” unless the company separately discloses price and mix. A higher realization may come from list-price increases, regional pricing, premium products, stronger trade sales or a different customer mix. It is not proof of a pure price increase.
Explain EBITDA through power, fuel and freight
After the revenue bridge, explain the cost bridge. Track power and fuel expense, freight and forwarding expense and other operating cost both in absolute rupees and per tonne where the denominator matches.
Rank #3
- Power and fuel: changes can reflect fuel prices, waste-heat recovery, captive power, renewable sourcing, kiln efficiency or the timing of procurement contracts.
- Freight and forwarding: changes can reflect lead distance, rail versus road use, diesel prices, dispatch locations and the mix of coastal, bulk or bagged sales.
- Other operating cost: include raw materials, employee costs, maintenance and other disclosed items, but do not assume an unexplained residual is a permanent efficiency gain.
Read EBITDA per tonne together with EBITDA margin. Per-tonne EBITDA shows operating economics independent of sales scale; margin shows how much of each rupee of revenue remains after operating costs. A company can have a higher per-tonne result but a lower margin if realization or mix differs.
Use both year-on-year and sequential comparisons
Same-quarter year-on-year comparison controls for recurring seasonal demand patterns better than a simple quarter-to-quarter comparison. Use it for volume, realization, costs, EBITDA, PAT and cash flow.
Sequential change is still essential for momentum, but interpret it carefully. Monsoon timing, planned shutdowns, price changes, fuel-cost timing and dispatch patterns can make one quarter unusually high or low. A sequential volume fall during a monsoon-affected quarter does not automatically indicate a loss of market share.
Add a trailing-four-quarter view when available. It reduces the effect of one unusual quarter and shows whether utilization, EBITDA per tonne, cash generation and leverage are actually improving.
What the latest UltraTech disclosure demonstrates
UltraTech Cement’s Q1 FY27 release in 2026 is a useful example of the level of detail to capture. The figures below are consolidated, as reported in that release, and compare Q1 FY27 with Q1 FY26 unless noted otherwise.
| Measure | Q1 FY27 | Q1 FY26 | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales | ₹24,465 crore | ₹21,040 crore | Reported increase of about 16% |
| PBIDT | ₹5,146 crore | ₹4,591 crore | Operating earnings increased alongside sales |
| PAT | ₹2,604 crore | ₹2,221 crore | Reported increase of about 17% |
| Domestic sales volume | 39.2 million tonnes | Not stated in the cited release | Use the disclosed denominator when calculating per-tonne measures |
| Installed capacity | 200.1 MTPA | Not stated in the cited release | Capacity denominator for the reported utilization rate |
| Capacity utilization | 81% | Not stated in the cited release | Read with capacity additions and shutdowns |
| Operating EBITDA per tonne | ₹1,214 | ₹1,198 | Reported increase of ₹16 per tonne |
The company’s official headline described the quarter as “UltraTech delivers strong Q1 FY27 performance: Net Sales up 16%, PAT up 17%, Domestic volumes up 13.1%.” Treat those percentages as the company’s reported comparisons and verify the underlying scope before comparing them with India Cements.
The same release stated: “India Cements Q1 FY27 Normalised PAT at Rs. 52 crores compared to Net loss of Rs. 183 crores in Q1 FY25, supported by 18.5% volume growth.” Preserve the stated comparison exactly: it references Q1 FY25, not Q1 FY26. “Normalised PAT” is also not automatically comparable with an unadjusted PAT line, so identify the adjustment before using it in a peer table.
Judge profit quality with cash, debt and capex
A one-quarter PAT increase can be driven by exceptional items, tax changes or lower interest rather than stronger cement operations. Check EBITDA, operating cash flow and finance cost together.
- Operating cash flow: compare it with EBITDA and PAT. A widening gap can reflect working-capital absorption, inventory or receivables.
- Net debt: record the period-end balance and the direction of change. Falling debt while capex continues indicates stronger internal funding.
- Finance cost: rising interest expense can offset operating improvement and may signal a more leveraged expansion program.
- Capex: compare spending with announced projects and commissioning dates. Capex without progress on usable capacity does not create near-term volume.
- Capacity execution: track new grinding units, kilns, debottlenecking and commissioning progress separately from management guidance.
Do not call a quarter’s improvement durable until cash generation, leverage and capacity execution support it. Management guidance should be labelled as guidance, not as a reported result.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Mixing standalone and consolidated results
Symptom: one company’s revenue is consolidated while its volume or profit is standalone. Fix: rebuild the row using one basis, or mark the metric unavailable.
Using different periods
Symptom: a June quarter for one company is compared with a March quarter for another. Fix: align the quarter ended, not merely the publication month.
Dividing mismatched revenue by volume
Symptom: a calculated realization looks implausibly high or low. Fix: confirm that revenue includes the same products, geography and subsidiaries as the volume denominator.
Treating PBIDT and EBITDA as identical
Symptom: a reported PBIDT number is merged into an EBITDA series without checking definitions. Fix: retain the reported label and document the company’s reconciliation or exclusions.

Ignoring exceptional items
Symptom: PAT growth is far larger than EBITDA growth. Fix: show reported PAT, normalized PAT if provided, and the exceptional item separately.
Overreading sequential changes
Symptom: a monsoon-affected quarter is treated as a permanent collapse. Fix: compare the same quarter year on year and use a trailing-four-quarter view.
Comparing national and regional averages without context
Symptom: India Cements is judged against a nationwide realization as if both sold into the same markets. Fix: add geography, lead distance, product mix and market exposure to the explanation.

- Test demand: compare cement and clinker volumes, utilization and regional conditions.
- Bridge sales: separate volume from realization and mix.
- Bridge operating profit: explain power, fuel, freight and other cost per tonne.
- Check durability: compare EBITDA per tonne and margin on both year-on-year and sequential bases, then inspect the trailing-four-quarter trend.
- Check funding: compare PAT with operating cash flow, net debt and finance cost.
- Check execution: match capex and commissioning progress with the company’s stated capacity plan.
- Label the conclusion: identify which statements are reported figures, which are your calculations and which are management guidance.
A simple worksheet should therefore contain the quarter ended, publication date, basis and units at the top; volume and realization in the first block; EBITDA, margin and cost lines in the second; and cash flow, debt, capex and capacity execution in the final block. Keep a notes column for geography, shutdowns, exceptional items and definition changes.
How to reach a defensible conclusion
India Cements is improving relative to peers only when the evidence aligns across several measures: comparable volume growth, stable or improving realization, lower or controlled cost per tonne, better EBITDA per tonne, positive operating cash flow, manageable net debt and credible capacity execution. A single strong revenue or PAT number is not enough.
The most informative comparison is therefore not “which company grew fastest?” It is “which company converted market demand and pricing into repeatable per-tonne operating profit and cash without weakening its balance sheet?” That question keeps India Cements, UltraTech, Shree Cement and the rest of the peer set on a consistent, decision-useful basis.
