There is no single “fastest” handheld GPU. The useful comparison is sustained performance at the same resolution, preset, upscaling mode, API, power source and firmware. Record average FPS together with 1% or 0.1% lows and frame-time behavior: a higher average can feel worse when stutter is severe. Ryzen Z1 Extreme handhelds have a higher 9–30 W power ceiling, while Steam Deck OLED operates at 4–15 W and can be smoother or more efficient in particular games.
What “real-world GPU performance” means on a handheld
A handheld gaming PC does not have a fixed graphics speed in the way a desktop graphics card is often described. Its integrated GPU shares memory with the CPU, runs inside a thermal envelope, and changes clocks as the device switches between battery and charger operation. The same processor can therefore produce materially different results at 10 W, 20 W and 30 W.
“Fastest” should mean the best result for the way you will play. For a plugged-in session, that may be the highest sustained frame rate at 30 W. For travel, it may be the smoothest 30-FPS lock at a lower wattage, with acceptable fan noise and useful battery life. Compare those use cases separately rather than combining them into one ranking.
- Average FPS describes throughput over the run.
- 1% and 0.1% lows expose the slowest moments that averages hide.
- Frame-time plots show whether frames arrive evenly or in visible spikes.
- Power, temperature, noise and runtime determine whether the measured speed is practical away from a wall socket.
A 120 Hz display does not make a game run at 120 FPS. The panel refresh rate only sets the maximum cadence it can show; the rendered resolution, game settings and APU power limit still determine actual frame delivery.

Hardware baseline: the GPUs and power limits
The principal comparison in current handheld PCs is between the RDNA3 graphics in Ryzen Z1 Extreme systems and the RDNA2 graphics in Steam Deck OLED. The following figures are the specifications reported by AMD and GamersNexus; they describe the platform, not a guarantee of performance in every game.
| Platform | GPU architecture and compute units | GPU clock listed in the comparison | Configurable APU power | Battery capacity | Panel resolution/refresh in the cited material |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Ally with Ryzen Z1 Extreme | RDNA3, 12 compute units | 2.7 GHz | 9–30 W | 40 Wh | Not stated |
| Lenovo Legion Go with Ryzen Z1 Extreme | RDNA3, 12 compute units | 2.7 GHz | 9–30 W | Not stated | 2560×1600; refresh rate not stated |
| Steam Deck OLED | RDNA2, 8 compute units | 1.6 GHz | 4–15 W | 50 Wh | Not stated |
| Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor specification | Integrated RDNA3 graphics; Zen 4 CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads | CPU boost up to 5.1 GHz | AMD configurable TDP: 9–30 W | Depends on the handheld | Depends on the handheld |
The 12-CU versus 8-CU count is not a complete performance forecast. Z1 Extreme graphics can use more power, but a small chassis, a conservative battery profile or a heat-soaked session can prevent the GPU from sustaining its peak. Steam Deck OLED’s lower ceiling limits absolute throughput, yet its 50 Wh battery and lower operating range can support a different efficiency trade-off than a 40 Wh, higher-power design.
Set up a fair, repeatable test
Before comparing two handhelds, decide what question the test answers. A battery comparison should not use the same settings as a plugged-in maximum-performance comparison. Keep a written test sheet so every result remains attributable.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Choose the rendered resolution. Use a common mode such as 1280×720 when both devices support it, or test each device’s practical 800p/720p mode separately. GamersNexus used 1280×720 because it was natively supported by both the Ally and Deck in its comparison.
- Lock the graphics preset. Record Low, Medium or a custom preset and list any changed options such as shadows, crowd density or ray tracing.
- Fix upscaling. Specify whether the game is native, FSR, RSR or another scaler, and record its quality mode. Do not compare native 1080p on one device with 720p upscaled to 1080p on another.
- Keep the API constant. Vulkan and DirectX can produce different frame pacing and shader-compilation behavior. Use the same API where the game supports both.
- Update and document software. Apply firmware, operating-system and graphics-driver updates through the manufacturers’ first-party tools, then record the exact versions. A driver change can alter shader compilation, power behavior or compatibility.
- Select a repeatable workload. Use a built-in benchmark or the same route through a demanding area. A repeatable route is preferable to a short menu scene that does not load the GPU consistently.
- Set the power condition. Run one series on battery in the chosen Performance profile and another while connected to the charger in the device’s Turbo or 30 W profile. Note whether the charger is supplying enough power for that mode.
- Allow the device to settle. Ignore an unusually high first pass if clocks and temperatures have not reached their sustained state. GamersNexus removed initial passes that were not representative after thermal and power limits engaged.
- Run enough passes to expose stutter. Capture average FPS, 1% low, 0.1% low and a frame-time plot for every pass. Repeat outliers rather than averaging them away.
- Log the environment. Record fan/noise mode, ambient conditions if available, surface temperature, battery percentage, charger state and whether background downloads or overlays were active.
This protocol prevents a common error: declaring one handheld faster because it produced a higher number during a brief burst before its cooling system or power controller intervened.
Read averages and lows together
Average FPS is useful for throughput, but it cannot show how often the game pauses. A title averaging 48 FPS can feel less responsive than one averaging 46 FPS if the first device has repeated 80–100 millisecond frame times. The 0.1% low is particularly useful for finding rare but obvious stalls; the 1% low gives a broader view of recurring dips.
GamersNexus reported this exact divergence in Dying Light 2 at 720p Low with FSR Quality. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme Ally averaged 48 FPS versus 45.8 FPS on Steam Deck OLED, yet the Ally’s lows were much worse and its frame-time plot showed spikes approaching 40–110 ms. The higher average therefore did not translate into a smoother experience.

When examining a plot, look for a mostly even band of frame times with occasional isolated spikes versus a repeating saw-tooth pattern. Spikes can come from shader compilation, asset streaming, CPU scheduling, memory pressure or a power-limit transition. Repeat the run after shaders have cached and after background activity has stopped; if the spikes remain, they are part of the device-and-game combination you are evaluating.

Representative game results at matched settings
The following measurements illustrate why results must be tied to a game, API, resolution and test date. They are not a universal leaderboard.
| Game and settings | Steam Deck LCD | Steam Deck OLED | Ryzen Z1 Extreme handheld | What the result indicates |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2, 720p, Vulkan | 49.7 FPS average; 26 FPS 0.1% low | 53 FPS average, about 7% above LCD | Effectively tied with OLED in the cited retest | More compute units do not guarantee a visible lead in every workload; frame pacing and game engine behavior matter. |
| Dying Light 2, 720p Low, FSR Quality | Not stated | 45.8 FPS average | 48 FPS average; much worse lows and spikes on Ally | The small average advantage can feel worse when 0.1% lows and frame times are unstable. |
| Cyberpunk 2077, 720p Low, FSR 2.1 Quality | 44 FPS average | 44.6 FPS average | Not stated in this comparison | OLED’s result was essentially level with LCD in this test. |
| Resident Evil 4, 720p | Not stated | 28.6 FPS average | 30.4 FPS average with stable lows | A modest average lead is more meaningful when lows remain stable. |
Separate measurements from Tom’s Hardware put the ROG Ally at 47 FPS in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 40 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, 50 FPS in Borderlands 3 and 54 FPS in Forza Horizon 5, all at 720p. Plugged-in Turbo mode raised several of those results substantially. Because the test conditions and power profile differ from the GamersNexus runs, these numbers should be used as additional examples, not mixed into a single ranking.
Resolution and upscaling can reverse the result
Integrated GPUs render far fewer pixels at 1280×720 or 1280×800 than at 1920×1080 or 2560×1600. A handheld with a high-resolution panel may therefore look slower simply because it is being tested at its native output. Compare both native and practical performance modes, and state whether the game is rendering internally at a lower resolution.
Tom’s Guide measured the Lenovo Legion Go at 1080p at 23 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, 41 FPS in Dirt 5 and 23 FPS in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. In Doom Eternal, the device produced 15–20 FPS at 2560×1600, 30–45 FPS at 1920×1200 with a 30 W TDP, and mid-70s at 1280×800. The large change is primarily a pixel-load and power-setting story, not a sudden change in GPU architecture.
Use the same upscaler quality when comparing devices. “FSR Quality” at 720p input is not equivalent to native 1080p, and a vendor’s driver-level scaler may use different sharpening or scaling behavior than the game’s integrated option. Record both the output resolution shown to the display and the internal render resolution whenever the game exposes them.

Battery, heat and noise are part of GPU performance
A benchmark that lasts only while the battery is full can overstate portable performance. Repeat the test at a representative charge level and on the charger. Some handhelds reduce the available wattage on battery, while plugged-in Turbo or 30 W modes can raise FPS at the cost of runtime, fan noise and surface heat.
Battery capacity alone is not a runtime prediction. The cited hardware table lists 50 Wh for Steam Deck OLED and 40 Wh for ROG Ally, but the Ally’s higher configurable power ceiling can consume energy faster. Report measured runtime with the game, brightness, refresh setting, audio, wireless state, frame cap and power profile documented. If runtime was not measured, label it “not stated” rather than inferring it from watt-hours.

- Surface temperature at grips and controls, not just the hottest internal sensor.
- Whether a fixed 30 or 40 FPS cap permits a quieter, longer session.
- Whether the charger can maintain the selected high-power profile during gameplay.
A stable frame cap can be a better real-world choice than an uncapped average. It reduces bursty power demand and makes frame pacing easier to judge, provided the cap is applied consistently on every device.
Memory, drivers and operating systems can move the numbers
Handheld APUs use shared system memory. Memory speed and allocation affect both CPU and GPU work, while operating-system overhead, driver maturity and the game API can change results independently of nominal compute-unit counts. Windows and Linux-based environments may also differ in shader caches, overlays, background services and compatibility layers.
Document the OS and driver version beside every result. Do not combine a launch-day test on one device with a later retest on another and call the difference architectural. If a game receives a patch, rerun the same route on both systems or mark the results as belonging to different software conditions.

AMD’s own Labs testing of Ryzen Z1 Extreme on the ASUS ROG Ally in April 2023 covered nine selected games at low settings, using 1080p output upscaled from 720p with Radeon Super Resolution. AMD explicitly noted that the results were configuration dependent. That qualification applies to vendor charts generally: use them to understand a test setup, not as a promise for your library.

If you mostly play plugged in
Prioritize sustained 25–30 W testing, cooling behavior and frame-time consistency. A Z1 Extreme handheld has the higher power ceiling and can produce substantially higher results in games that scale with GPU wattage. Confirm that the charger and thermal profile can maintain that mode for a complete session, not just a short benchmark.
If you mostly play on battery
Compare the devices at the same battery wattage and with an identical frame cap. Include runtime, fan noise and the point at which performance begins to drop. The Steam Deck OLED’s 4–15 W range and 50 Wh battery may make it the more efficient option in a particular game, even when a Z1 Extreme system wins an unrestricted plugged-in test.
If you play demanding new releases
Use 720p or 800p output with a consistent upscaler, then inspect 0.1% lows. Do not assume a high-resolution panel should be driven natively; the Doom Eternal results demonstrate how quickly a 2560×1600 workload can overwhelm an integrated GPU.
If you value a smooth locked experience
Choose the device and settings that hold your target cap with the fewest frame-time spikes. A stable 30 or 40 FPS can be preferable to a fluctuating 50–70 FPS range. Test the exact games you play, because Red Dead Redemption 2, Dying Light 2, Cyberpunk 2077 and Resident Evil 4 already produce different winners under closely related settings.

Troubleshoot results that look wrong
The first run is much faster
Let the device reach its sustained thermal state, then repeat. Early clocks can fall after the cooler and power controller engage. Exclude the transient pass and report the settled runs.
Average FPS is high but the game feels jerky
Check the 1% and 0.1% lows and inspect the frame-time plot. Disable background downloads and overlays, allow shader caches to build, and repeat the same route. If 40–110 ms spikes remain, report them instead of hiding them behind the average.
Plugged-in and battery results are nearly identical
Confirm that the intended Turbo or 30 W profile is active and that the charger supports it. Some systems silently remain in a lower profile when the adapter, cable or battery condition does not permit the higher limit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOne handheld wins only at native resolution
Match internal render resolution and upscaler quality before drawing a conclusion. A 2560×1600 panel can impose far more pixel work than a 1280×800 output, even when both devices contain similar integrated graphics.
A newer driver changes the ranking
Record the old and new versions and rerun both devices under the same software state. Treat the result as a software update effect, not evidence that the hardware specifications changed.
Bottom line
Compare handheld GPUs as complete, sustained systems rather than as compute-unit counts. Ryzen Z1 Extreme devices offer the strongest performance ceiling because their RDNA3 graphics can operate from 9 to 30 W, but that advantage appears only when cooling, firmware and power delivery sustain it. Steam Deck OLED’s lower-power RDNA2 design can match or beat them in selected games and modes, and a smoother frame-time profile is often more valuable than a higher average. The defensible method is to lock every rendering variable, test battery and charger conditions separately, and publish averages, lows, frame times, runtime and acoustics together.
