The only dependable way to tell which of Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart, or Aldi is cheaper for you is to compare the same basket at nearby stores on the same date, convert every item to a common unit, and use the lowest price you can actually redeem. Advertised prices alone do not establish that one chain is cheapest.
Start with a fair, local comparison
Grocery pricing is not a national constant. Store location, inventory, package size, loyalty status, digital coupons, fulfillment channel, and the date can all change the amount charged. Choose one nearby location for each chain and record the comparison date. Kroger explicitly says that prices and promotions may vary by location, may require a Shopper’s Card, and may differ when an order is placed through a third-party delivery service (Kroger’s mobile-app guidance).
Do not compare one highly advertised item at each store and call the result a winner. A sale on milk at one chain says little about the cost of your complete trip. Build one fixed basket and price every line at every store where the item is reasonably comparable.

Use products your household actually buys. Include enough categories to expose differences in everyday pricing, such as produce, dairy, meat, pantry goods, frozen food, beverages, and household staples. Write down the exact brand, package size, variety, and quality grade. If you are evaluating store brands, label the tier: basic, organic, premium, or another clearly defined level. Comparing an organic item at one store with a conventional item at another produces a misleading total.

When an identical item is unavailable, record the substitute rather than silently switching products. Note the brand, size, ingredients or grade, and any quality difference. A lower price is not a saving if the substitute is materially smaller or does not meet your requirements.
Record two prices for each item
For each store, capture the ordinary shelf or online price and the lowest price available to that specific shopper after a loyalty account, clipped coupon, or advertised sale. Keep the conditions beside the number. A price that requires a membership, a digital coupon, a minimum quantity, or a limited-time promotion should never appear as an unconditional price.
Kroger digital coupons can be clipped to a Shopper’s Card and used in store, for pickup, or for delivery (Kroger digital weekly ad). Albertsons for U provides personalized deals and Points when the member account is used (Albertsons for U FAQ). ALDI publishes app offers that can be checked before shopping (ALDI mobile app).
Use a price sheet that separates unlike costs
A spreadsheet prevents a low headline price from hiding an expensive package, a service fee, or a difficult second trip. One row should represent one basket item at one store. Useful columns are:
- Store and specific location
- Product description, brand, package size, and quality tier
- Regular shelf or online price
- Sale, coupon, or loyalty price
- Coupon or membership condition
- Comparable quantity and unit
- Unit price
- Availability or substitute note
- Pickup or delivery channel
- Fees, minimum-order rule, and substitution adjustment
Add a date and a source note for every price. A screenshot, weekly-ad entry, or checkout record makes it possible to tell whether a later change came from a new promotion, a different store, or a package-size change. Keep the original regular price even when a sale is active; otherwise you cannot evaluate how much of the result depends on a temporary offer.
Keep shelf-price data separate from trip costs. A store can have a lower merchandise total but become more expensive after delivery, service fees, a minimum-order requirement, or a second drive. Recording both layers lets you answer two different questions: “Which store sells this basket for less?” and “Which shopping plan costs me less overall?”
Normalize every item to a common unit
Package sizes make direct shelf-price comparisons unreliable. Convert each comparable item to price per ounce, pound, count, or liter before adding totals. The calculation is:

Unit price = price paid ÷ usable quantity in the same unit.
For example, compare two differently sized packages by dividing each final price by its ounces rather than comparing the printed package totals. Use pounds for meat or produce sold by weight, count for eggs or individual items, and liters when liquid products are labeled that way. Keep the unit consistent within each category.
Check that the quantity is actually comparable. A multipack, family-size package, drained-weight item, or product sold by count can make a package appear cheaper while delivering less usable product. Record the number printed on the package and the unit used in your calculation so another shopper can reproduce it.

Handle weighted products after fulfillment
For meat, produce, deli items, and other variable-weight products, use the final fulfilled weight rather than the estimated cart weight. The amount can change at checkout. Instacart’s ALDI help information warns that weighted-item totals may vary and that some in-store sales or promotions may not apply online (ALDI online-order pricing information). Enter the final weight and charge in your sheet when the order is complete, or mark the result as an estimate until then.
If the store charges by the pound but displays an estimated total, preserve both figures: the advertised per-pound rate and the final fulfilled amount. That distinction prevents a weighted item from distorting the entire basket comparison.
Compare like with like when brands differ
Brand matching is ideal, but store-brand assortments often differ. If no identical product exists, compare equivalent package size, ingredients, grade, and claims such as organic or cage-free. Show the difference in your notes and avoid presenting the result as a strict brand-to-brand test. At ALDI in particular, assortment and package sizes can differ from other chains, making unit price and ingredient comparison more informative than brand-name matching.
It can help to run two versions of the basket: a named-brand basket for items where brand matters, and a store-brand basket with each chain’s basic, organic, or premium tier clearly identified. Do not combine the two totals into one ranking, because they answer different shopping questions.
Keep online and in-store economics separate
Price the basket through the channel you will actually use. A store’s website, pickup system, delivery marketplace, and physical shelf may show different prices or promotions. Put the channel in a separate column and add costs only after the item total is calculated.

- Pickup: Check whether the displayed price is the store price and whether a pickup fee or order minimum applies.
- Delivery: Add delivery, service, small-order, and other disclosed fees. Check substitution settings because a replacement can change both size and price.
- Third-party marketplace: Verify the retailer’s pricing-policy label. Instacart notes that some in-store promotions may not apply online.
- In-store trip: Add fuel or travel time only in the final trip comparison, not to the item’s unit price.
Do not treat a marketplace cart total as a pure shelf-price measurement. It combines merchandise prices, availability, substitutions, and fees. A fair report can show both the comparable item subtotal and the actual checkout total for the chosen channel.
Use the same channel at every chain when the goal is a channel-to-channel test. If you must mix channels, label that limitation prominently. A Walmart in-store basket and a Kroger delivery basket are useful for deciding how to shop, but they are not a clean test of merchandise prices alone.
What each chain’s own tools can tell you
Kroger
Kroger’s digital weekly ad supports list building, weekly deals, personalized coupons, and Shopper’s Card savings (Kroger digital weekly ad). Clip qualifying coupons before checkout and record whether the price is available in store, pickup, or delivery. Kroger says digital coupons can be used across those channels, but prices and promotions may vary by location and may not carry over to Instacart orders (Kroger ways to shop).
Albertsons
The Albertsons app combines deals, coupons, item lookup, and shopping-list functions (Albertsons mobile apps). Albertsons for U is free and offers personalized deals, Points, and grocery or fuel rewards. A clipped offer applies when the member account is identified at checkout (Albertsons for U FAQ). Record the immediate item discount separately from Points or fuel value so your basket comparison does not mix a direct price reduction with a reward you may redeem later.
When valuing Points or fuel rewards, state whether you are counting them at face value, excluding them, or reporting them as a separate benefit. The immediate basket total should remain visible even if rewards materially affect your decision.

Walmart
Walmart describes its U.S. pricing approach as “Every Day Low Prices,” intended to make routine budgeting more predictable (Walmart Every Day Low Prices). This is Walmart’s own positioning, not an independent finding that it is cheapest for every basket. Walmart’s U.S. store policy matches an identical price advertised on Walmart.com, while Walmart.com generally does not match competitor prices (Walmart price-match policy). Check the exact item, size, and local availability before relying on a web listing.
ALDI
Use the official ALDI app to check current offers and savings (ALDI mobile app). Do not assume that a missing national brand means the item has no equivalent. Compare ingredients, quality tier, package quantity, and unit price. Because assortment changes and sizes may not match other chains, an ALDI comparison often requires a clearly documented substitute rather than a simple brand match.
How published price studies should influence your expectation
A June 2024 online grocery pricing study reported Kroger at a 5.3% premium to Walmart and Albertsons/Safeway at about a 21.6% premium (June 2024 online grocery pricing study). These are directional basket results, not a promise about your checkout. The study said loyalty rewards, fuel rewards, and personalized promotions were not fully captured. Local assortment, timing, and discounts can therefore reverse or shrink the difference for an individual shopper.

Decide how to treat discounts and rewards
There are three useful views of a basket. The regular-price view shows what a shopper without an account or clipped offer would pay. The redeemable-price view applies only discounts that the shopper can actually claim at that location and channel. The net-benefit view reports later Points, fuel rewards, or other credits separately. Presenting all three prevents a personalized coupon from being mistaken for a price available to everyone and prevents a future reward from being treated as cash already saved.
Write down expiration dates, quantity limits, and account requirements. If a promotion applies only when buying multiple units, calculate the qualifying quantity and show the nonqualifying price for any extra unit. If an offer is personalized, another household may not see it, so label the result as account-specific.
Compare the whole trip, not just the item subtotal
After calculating unit prices, add the comparable item totals for each store. Then evaluate whether the difference is worth the travel, time, and risk of an incomplete basket. A practical decision model is:
- Calculate the merchandise subtotal using the redeemable price for each item.
- Add channel fees and any disclosed minimum-order cost.
- Estimate the extra travel required for a store or a second stop.
- Check how many items are unavailable or require substitutes.
- Choose the plan with the lowest acceptable total, not necessarily the store with the lowest single item.
If one store is only slightly cheaper but requires a separate trip, the saving may not justify the time or fuel. Conversely, a meaningful basket difference can justify a second stop when both stores are nearby and the needed items are in stock. Keep this judgment explicit rather than hiding it inside a claimed “cheapest store” ranking.
For a split trip, create a second total that includes only the items assigned to each store, then add the travel burden once for the actual route. Do not count the same delivery fee or drive twice. If a key item is unavailable, show the cost of completing the basket elsewhere instead of silently dropping it from the comparison.
A repeatable comparison workflow
- Set the date and locations. Select one nearby Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart, and ALDI location. Save the store or ZIP-code context with your sheet.
- Freeze the basket. List products, brands, sizes, quantities, and quality tiers before checking prices.
- Collect regular prices. Capture shelf or online prices for every item, including package quantity.
- Collect redeemable prices. Sign in to the relevant loyalty account, clip eligible coupons, and record sale conditions.
- Normalize units. Calculate price per ounce, pound, count, or liter. For weighted goods, update the calculation with the fulfilled weight.
- Document substitutions. Mark unavailable items and describe any replacement’s size, brand, grade, or ingredient difference.
- Separate channel costs. Add pickup, delivery, service, minimum-order, and substitution effects after the item subtotal.
- Compare totals and trip burden. Evaluate the complete basket, travel, time, availability, and likely checkout changes.
- Save the evidence. Keep screenshots or notes showing the date, location, coupon condition, and channel so the comparison can be repeated next week.
Repeat the exercise on a consistent schedule if prices matter to your budget. A weekly comparison captures changing ads, while a less frequent comparison can reveal whether a chain is consistently competitive after your normal discounts. Keep each date’s sheet rather than overwriting it; the history shows whether a result was a one-week promotion or a recurring pattern.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a national ranking as a personal answer
A published average cannot account for your store, basket, loyalty offers, or inventory. Treat rankings as a starting hypothesis and run the local-basket test.

Comparing sticker prices with different package sizes
A larger package can have a lower unit price even when its shelf total is higher. Always calculate the common unit before deciding.

Show the regular price and the redeemable price together. State whether an account, clipped offer, quantity threshold, or expiration condition applies.
Mixing rewards with immediate discounts
Points, fuel rewards, and future credits have different value and timing from an instant price reduction. Keep them in separate columns and explain when they can be used.
Ignoring weighted-item adjustments
Estimated cart weights are not final prices. Recalculate with the fulfilled weight or identify the result as provisional.
Assuming online promotions equal in-store promotions
Check the channel label and retailer policy. A marketplace may omit an in-store sale, apply different pricing, or substitute another product.

Declaring a winner from one cheap item
Compare the complete fixed basket. A chain can lead on one advertised product while costing more across the rest of the list.
Dropping unavailable items from the total
Removing out-of-stock products makes a store look artificially cheap. Keep the item in the basket, mark it unavailable, and show the documented substitute or the cost of buying it on another stop.
Changing the basket halfway through
Adding a larger size, a different quality grade, or a new brand after seeing prices destroys comparability. Freeze the list first; create a separate value-oriented basket if you want to test substitutions.

These services can reduce manual entry, but verify the displayed location, package size, date, coupon conditions, and channel before accepting a result. A retailer’s own app remains the authority for that retailer’s current offer and account-specific eligibility.

What a trustworthy result looks like
Report the date, locations, basket definition, unit-price method, loyalty conditions, channel, fees, substitutions, and trip assumptions. A useful conclusion might identify one store as the lowest for the measured basket while noting that another becomes competitive after a redeemable promotion or avoids a second trip. That is more accurate than claiming that one chain is permanently cheapest.
