The cheapest advertised GPU is rarely the cheapest useful GPU. Compare providers on the same model, VRAM, region, node topology, billing mode and workload duration, then convert every quote to an effective cost per usable GPU-hour. Add storage, egress, minimum billing, setup delay, interruption probability and restart work. In parallel, verify that the exact GPU quantity and topology can be delivered when you need them, and read the SLA’s scope, exclusions and credit cap rather than relying on a headline percentage.
Start with an apples-to-apples GPU comparison
A price comparison is meaningful only when the offers describe equivalent hardware and operating conditions. An H100 PCIe is not interchangeable with an H100 SXM for every workload, and a single card is not equivalent to an eight-GPU HGX node with a high-speed interconnect. Record these fields for every quote:
- GPU SKU and variant: for example, H100 PCIe, H100 SXM or A100 PCIe/SXM.
- VRAM: capacity affects whether your model fits and how much data can remain on device.
- Node topology: single GPU, multi-GPU server, NVLink/NVSwitch arrangement and inter-node fabric.
- Region and zone: data-transfer distance, tax, capacity and compliance rules vary by location.
- Billing mode: community or marketplace, secure or dedicated, spot, on-demand, reserved or committed.
- Workload duration: an hourly experiment, a week-long batch run and a six-month training job have different commitment and restart economics.
Keep the quote date and geography beside the number. GPU prices and capacity move with supply, promotions and regional demand, so a rate observed in 2026 is a dated snapshot, not a permanent tariff.

effective usable GPU-hour = (GPU rental + storage + egress + minimum-billing waste + setup time + expected interruption/restart cost + reservation commitment) / usable GPU-hours
For a multi-GPU node, divide the node price by the number of GPUs only if your job can use those GPUs and the provider allows the allocation you need. An eight-GPU server billed as a unit costs more than a single-card instance when you need only one card, even if the arithmetic per card looks attractive.
Include non-rental charges
- Storage: persistent disks, object storage and snapshots continue to cost money while GPUs are stopped. Include the capacity and retention period needed for checkpoints.
- Egress: moving datasets, checkpoints or generated results out of the provider can dominate a short GPU run. Estimate bytes leaving the region, not just bytes copied into it.
- Minimum billing: a one-minute job may be billed for a larger increment. Multiply the minimum by the number of failed starts and test runs.
- Setup time: count image pulls, driver installation, data staging and queue time as unavailable GPU time when comparing providers.
- Interruption and restart: spot eviction can require recomputing work, restoring a checkpoint and waiting for another placement. Price the expected lost hours and operator time.
- Commitment: a reservation or cluster plan can lower the unit rate but creates a payment obligation if utilization falls.
Use a dated comparison sheet
For each provider, capture the exact URL or quote reference, timestamp, region, GPU variant, VRAM, topology, billing mode, included storage, transfer terms, minimum charge, support channel and cancellation terms. Do not mix an on-demand single-GPU price from one region with a spot eight-GPU price from another and call the result a provider ranking.

Dated H100 and A100 price examples
The following figures are examples published or compiled in 2026. They are useful for establishing an order of magnitude, but they can change by region, variant, billing mode and available supply.
| Provider or comparison | GPU or configuration | Published price | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| RunPod | H100 PCIe | $2.89 per hour | 2026 example rate; confirm whether the offer is Community Cloud or Secure Cloud and check the selected region. |
| RunPod | H100 SXM | $3.99 per hour | 2026 example rate; SXM and PCIe are different hardware variants. |
| RunPod | A100 PCIe/SXM | $1.79 per hour | 2026 example rate covering the listed A100 variants; verify the exact card before deployment. |
| Lambda | H100 SXM instance | $3.99–$4.29 per GPU-hour | 2026 range for instance configurations; configuration and region determine the exact value. |
| Lambda 1-Click Cluster | 16 GPUs | $6.16 per GPU-hour | 2026 listed rate for plans from two weeks to one year; it is a cluster price, not a one-card self-serve rate. |
| Lambda 1-Click Cluster | 64 GPUs | $5.85 per GPU-hour | 2026 listed rate for plans from two weeks to one year. |
| Lambda 1-Click Cluster | 256 GPUs | $5.54 per GPU-hour | 2026 listed rate for plans from two weeks to one year. |
| CoreWeave | Eight-GPU HGX H100 node, on demand | $49.24 per hour | 2026 node quote. Dividing by eight gives $6.155 per GPU-hour before other charges. |
| CoreWeave | Eight-GPU HGX H100 node, spot | $19.71 per hour | 2026 node quote. Dividing by eight gives about $2.46 per GPU-hour, subject to spot interruption. |
| GPUCost comparison | H100, Vast.ai example | $1.47 per hour | 2026 comparison-table snapshot; marketplace supply and host terms require separate validation. |
| GPUCost comparison | H100, RunPod example | $2.89 per hour | 2026 comparison-table snapshot; the underlying offer can vary by mode and region. |
| GPUCost comparison | H100, CoreWeave example | $4.25 per hour | 2026 comparison-table snapshot; it may represent a different configuration from the HGX node quote. |
| GPUCost comparison | H100, Google Cloud example | $9.80 per hour | 2026 comparison-table snapshot; verify machine type, region and attached resources. |
| GPUCost comparison | H100, Azure example | $12.29 per hour | 2026 comparison-table snapshot; verify machine type, region and billing mode. |
The GPUCost table did not provide a directly comparable H100 value for AWS, so do not infer one from another AWS instance type. Its values are comparison snapshots rather than universal quotes.

Understand the three provider classes
Hyperscalers: AWS, Google Cloud and Azure
Hyperscalers are usually the strongest fit when your GPU workload must sit beside existing identity, private networking, compliance controls, data warehouses, managed databases or multi-region failover. Their operational tooling and contractual framework can reduce integration work. The trade-off is that GPU capacity can be constrained and the all-in rate can exceed a specialized provider, especially after adding attached storage, premium networking and data transfer.
Choose this class when the surrounding platform is as important as the accelerator. A team already operating in one hyperscaler may save engineering hours by keeping IAM, logging, private endpoints and disaster-recovery procedures in the same environment, even if the raw GPU-hour quote is higher.
GPU-native clouds: CoreWeave and Lambda
GPU-native providers concentrate on accelerator fleets, cluster scheduling and AI-oriented networking. They can expose clearer GPU-focused pricing and prebuilt cluster products. The relevant question is not whether the provider specializes in GPUs, but whether the exact SKU, interconnect and quantity you need are available for your start date and duration.
Lambda distinguishes first-come self-serve instances from 1-Click Clusters ranging from 16 to more than 2,000 GPUs. The cluster rates above therefore address a different procurement problem from a single H100 instance. CoreWeave’s HGX quote is likewise a complete eight-GPU node; a single-card user cannot assume that the divided figure is an orderable product.
Marketplaces and aggregators
Marketplaces pool third-party supply and can advertise very low rates. The lower price transfers more validation work to you: inspect host reputation, hardware identity, network path, disk persistence, image provenance, eviction behavior and support escalation. A marketplace is attractive for checkpointed experiments, batch processing and flexible research, but a bargain host that disappears during a long run can cost more than a stable on-demand instance.

Measure whether the GPU will actually be available
Availability is a probability and a lead-time question, not a provider-wide label. Ask for a quote containing the exact GPU SKU, VRAM, region, quantity, interconnect or topology, storage type and required start deadline.
Run a repeatable placement test
- Send the same specification to each provider, including the number of GPUs and whether a single node or multi-node fabric is required.
- Record the request timestamp, quoted rate, billing mode and promised start window.
- Measure request-to-ready time, including queueing, image startup and data staging.
- Log failed placements, substitutions, region changes and wait-list behavior rather than counting only successful launches.
- Repeat at several times and dates if the project is important; one successful launch cannot establish a stable capacity probability.
- Record whether the offer is community, secure, spot, on-demand or reserved, because each class can have a different pool and interruption policy.
RunPod advertises “Thousands of GPUs across 30+ regions” and separates Community Cloud from Secure Cloud. That breadth can improve the chance of finding a card, but it does not guarantee that a particular H100 variant is free in your chosen region at your deadline. Lambda separates first-come self-serve instances from larger 1-Click Clusters, so a self-serve result should not be treated as evidence that a 256-GPU allocation is immediately obtainable.
Convert delay into money
If a training team costs $X per hour and a low-rate provider adds six hours of queueing, the delay has an opportunity cost even before the GPU starts. Add the delay to the effective-cost sheet. A provider with a higher nominal rate but immediate capacity can be cheaper for a deadline-bound job.
Read an SLA as a contract, not a percentage
An SLA percentage is meaningful only with its scope and remedy. Check whether it applies to one virtual machine, a multi-zone fleet, a reserved cluster or merely network connectivity. Then identify exclusions for maintenance, customer configuration, storage, interconnect failures and force majeure. Finally, calculate the maximum service credit as a fraction of the affected bill; a credit is not the same as reimbursement for lost training time or data.
| Provider or analysis | Commitment described | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| AWS EC2 | 99.99% Region-Level uptime | Requires instances running concurrently across at least two Availability Zones; AWS documents this as one of two EC2 SLA commitments. |
| AWS EC2 | 99.5% uptime | Individual-instance commitment; credits range from 10% to 100% depending on measured uptime. |
| Google Cloud Premium Tier | At least 99.99% monthly uptime | Applies to multi-zone instances under the stated Premium Tier terms. |
| Google Cloud | At least 99.9% monthly uptime | Single non-memory-optimized instance; credits rise to 100% below 95% uptime. |
| CoreWeave, secondary analysis | 99.95% | Reported for reserved contracts by ClusterBid in 2026; verify the contract offered to your account. |
| Lambda, secondary analysis | 99.9% | Reported for on-demand service by ClusterBid in 2026; verify product-specific terms. |
| RunPod, secondary analysis | No explicit spot SLA reported | ClusterBid reported no explicit RunPod spot SLA in 2026; confirm the current spot terms and remedy directly. |
Ask these SLA questions before signing
- Does the clock measure instance reachability, GPU health, network connectivity or the whole training cluster?
- Are planned maintenance and provider-initiated migrations excluded?
- Do storage, attached volumes and interconnects have separate commitments?
- Is the guarantee per instance, per zone, per cluster or per billing account?
- What evidence and deadline are required to claim a credit?
- What is the maximum credit, and is it limited to the affected monthly GPU charge?
For a distributed job, design for failure even when an SLA exists. A credit may offset part of a bill but cannot restore optimizer state, lost wall-clock time or a missed launch window.

Compare interruption and restart behavior
Spot and marketplace capacity can be economically compelling because you accept eviction risk. The correct comparison is expected completed work, not rented hours. Estimate checkpoint interval, checkpoint duration, probability of eviction during a run, time to obtain a replacement and the amount of recomputation after restart.
Build a restart-cost estimate
- Measure how many training hours are lost when the process stops between checkpoints.
- Measure checkpoint upload and restore time, including object-storage and egress charges.
- Estimate replacement wait time from your placement logs.
- Multiply those hours by the GPU and operator cost.
- Compare the result with the premium for on-demand or reserved capacity.
Frequent, validated checkpoints can make spot suitable for experiments and batch jobs. A run that cannot be restarted safely, such as a tightly coupled multi-node training job without resilient orchestration, usually needs dedicated capacity and a topology with predictable networking.

Single-GPU inference and development
For an API, notebook or development environment, prioritize predictable startup, persistent storage, image management and a stable network path. A low hourly rate loses its advantage if every deployment requires manual driver repair or if model downloads repeatedly cross a costly egress boundary.
Multi-GPU training
Check whether the GPUs are in one HGX/NVSwitch system or spread across ordinary hosts. Confirm the interconnect technology, bandwidth and topology exposed to your framework. A nominally equal number of GPUs can deliver very different scaling efficiency when collective communication crosses a slower network.
Recommended Free Tools
Data-intensive pipelines
Price the path from the data source to the GPUs and from the GPUs to archival storage. A provider with integrated object storage and private networking may reduce transfer and security work even when its accelerator line item is higher. Include storage performance and persistence in the same worksheet as GPU price; a fast temporary disk is not a substitute for durable checkpoints.

Assess provisioning, support and operational tooling
Record how a provider handles images, driver versions, Kubernetes or API access, logs, metrics, autoscaling, secrets and incident communication. Portability is an economic variable: a standard container image and exportable checkpoints reduce the cost of moving when capacity disappears or a contract changes.
- Provisioning: measure time from API request to a healthy GPU visible to your framework.
- Support: test the escalation path with a concrete hardware or networking question before a production incident.
- Automation: verify that instances, volumes, firewall rules and teardown can be managed reproducibly.
- Observability: collect GPU utilization, memory errors, thermal data, network throughput and eviction events.
- Portability: export images, environment manifests and checkpoints, and document any provider-specific drivers or schedulers.
Operational friction should be converted into labor hours in the effective-cost model. A cheaper GPU that requires a specialist to repair every deployment may be more expensive than a managed option for a small team.
Choose a provider by workload pattern
| Workload condition | Usually the better starting class | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Strict compliance, existing enterprise identity and private data services | Hyperscaler | Integrated IAM, networking, compliance controls and multi-region services can outweigh a GPU price premium. |
| Dedicated AI training or inference with a confirmed GPU topology | GPU-native cloud | GPU-focused products and cluster operations can reduce deployment work when the required capacity is available. |
| Checkpointed experiments, flexible batch work and interruptible research | Marketplace or spot tier | Lower rates are useful when eviction and replacement are acceptable. |
| Long training run with a hard deadline | On-demand or reserved capacity with redundancy | Price restart risk, queueing and deadline impact rather than selecting the lowest spot quote. |
These are starting points, not universal rankings. A hyperscaler can be the economical choice when moving data and identity elsewhere is costly; a marketplace can be the right answer when the job is disposable and checkpointed.

- Define the job: list GPU model, VRAM, GPU count, topology, region, storage, network needs, runtime and deadline.
- Create a normalized quote: request on-demand, spot and reserved options under the same specification.
- Calculate usable cost: include all charges, startup delay and expected restart work.
- Test capacity: run repeated placements and record wait times, failures and substitutions.
- Inspect the contract: map SLA scope, exclusions, credit process and maximum remedy to the actual service.
- Run a small workload: validate framework compatibility, storage throughput, interconnect performance and checkpoint recovery before committing to a long run.
- Set a fallback: keep portable images and checkpoints, and identify a second region or provider that meets the minimum topology.
- Recheck at launch: confirm price, capacity and terms on the day the production allocation is requested.
Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing unlike GPU variants: H100 PCIe and H100 SXM differ in memory and interconnect characteristics; label the variant in every spreadsheet row.
- Dividing a node quote without checking allocation: an eight-GPU price divided by eight is useful normalization, not proof that one GPU can be purchased separately.
- Using a marketplace snapshot as a guarantee: the lowest listed rate may depend on a particular host, region or interruption policy.
- Ignoring queue time: a GPU that becomes ready tomorrow cannot satisfy a job due tonight.
- Treating an SLA credit as reliability insurance: credits are capped remedies and do not automatically cover lost work, data or staffing.
- Leaving checkpoints out of the budget: durable storage, upload time and restore traffic affect both cost and recovery time.
- Ranking providers from one observation: availability changes by hour, region, quantity and topology; retain dated measurements.
- Locking into a commitment without utilization evidence: reserved cluster rates can be lower while unused capacity still creates a larger total bill.
What a defensible comparison report contains
At minimum, preserve the quote date, geography, exact hardware, topology, billing mode, capacity test results, effective-cost calculation, interruption assumptions, SLA excerpt and migration plan. Report observations as observations: for example, “the requested eight H100 SXM GPUs became ready in 42 minutes in this region on this date.” Do not generalize that one result into a permanent provider-wide availability ranking.
The final recommendation should state the condition under which it remains valid: region, GPU variant, quantity, runtime, deadline and tolerance for interruption. Revisit the sheet whenever any of those conditions changes, because GPU supply and published rates are dynamic.
