For researching places before a trip, compare Google Maps and Apple Maps by doing the same tasks in both: find candidates, inspect the area, save and annotate places, organize a shortlist, and share it. Google Maps documents collaborative saved lists and place notes; Apple Maps offers custom and curated Guides, Look Around, and personal notes. There is no universal winner: the better choice depends on your destination, device, privacy preferences, and whether you need to share your notes.
How to compare the apps for a real destination
Choose a destination you are actually considering, then use both apps to research the same handful of places. This makes the comparison useful to your trip rather than a general feature checklist.

- Find candidates: Search for the kinds of places you want to visit, such as restaurants, museums, or parks. Compare the results you see for that destination, rather than assuming either app is more complete everywhere.
- Inspect each place and its surroundings: Open the candidate and review the details and imagery available in your region. Apple Maps offers Look Around and curated Guides in supported areas; check whether they cover the places you care about. Apple describes about a thousand curated Guides on its product page, a vendor-reported figure rather than an independently audited count. Apple Maps
- Save the same candidates: Add each place to a collection in both apps. Notice whether the organization makes it easy to keep a trip shortlist separate from other saved places.
- Add a reason to visit: Write a brief note for each saved place, such as “near the hotel” or “good rainy-day option.” Then check what happens to that note when you share the place or collection.
- Share with your travel partner: Try the sharing workflow you would actually use. Check whether the recipient can collaborate on the collection, or only receive a place or link.
- Review privacy settings: Look at the account and device settings you use, including location and history controls. The two services describe different controls and scopes; neither setting should be treated as a complete account of all Maps-related data.
How do I save places I want to visit?
Google Maps: lists with notes and collaboration
Google Maps lets you save places in lists, add notes to places in lists, and share lists or invite collaborators. Google’s Help documentation describes the notes and collaboration workflow for iPhone and iPad, and its saved-list help page states a limit of 3,000 entries. Google warns that larger lists may not display properly. Google Maps Help: Save favorite places
This can suit a shortlist that other people need to help maintain. Before relying on it for group planning, try the exact sharing and collaboration steps on your own devices and confirm what the other person can change.

Apple Maps: Guides and personal notes
Apple Maps lets you save places, create your own Guides, and browse curated Guides. It also supports personal notes on saved places. Apple says those notes are visible only to you. If you share a place, the note may accompany the shared link as text, but it is not added to the recipient’s own note. Apple iPhone User Guide: Save places in Maps
That distinction matters when your note contains planning context that a companion needs. Test whether sharing the place as text is enough, or whether your group needs a shared collection with notes each person can access.

Which map app is better for planning a list of places?
The answer depends on what the list needs to do. Google documents shared lists, collaborator invitations, and notes attached to places. Apple combines personal notes with custom Guides, and its notes do not become the recipient’s saved notes when a place is shared. The table compares the documented workflows; feature availability and behavior can vary by platform and region.
| Planning need | Google Maps | Apple Maps |
|---|---|---|
| Collect places | Save places in lists; Google states a 3,000-entry limit for saved lists. Google Maps Help | Save places and collect them in custom Guides. Apple Maps |
| Add context | Place notes are supported in lists. Google Maps Help | Personal notes are supported; Apple says they are visible only to you. Apple iPhone User Guide |
| Share planning work | Lists can be shared and collaborators invited. Google Maps Help | Places can be shared, but a personal note sent as text does not become the recipient’s saved note. Apple iPhone User Guide |
| Preview places and area | The cited Google documentation does not establish a comparable visual-preview feature. | Look Around and curated Guides are documented, with availability varying geographically. Apple Maps |
What do the privacy controls mean?
Apple Maps
Apple’s Maps privacy documentation says, “You do not have to sign in to your Apple Account to use Maps.” Apple also describes end-to-end encryption for selected synced information when you are signed in with two-factor authentication. Location is needed for many Maps features; Apple says it processes location data in less precise form. These statements describe particular controls and data handling, not a guarantee that every Maps feature works without location access. Apple Maps & Privacy

Google Maps
Google Maps Help says, “Timeline is off by default for your Google Account and can only be turned on if you opt in.” When Timeline is enabled, precise device location is regularly saved to Timeline. Google also notes that other settings may save searches, interactions, or photos associated with places, so Timeline controls do not cover every Maps-related activity setting. Google Maps Help: Manage your Google Maps Timeline
To make a meaningful privacy comparison, inspect the settings on the accounts and devices you actually use. An opt-in Timeline and optional Apple Account sign-in are not directly interchangeable controls.

What this comparison cannot tell you
The documented features above do not establish which app has more accurate listings, better reviews, more reliable opening hours, or superior routes for your destination. Those can vary by place and change over time. If one of those factors will determine your choice, compare the specific destinations and details you plan to rely on, and verify important hours or access information with the venue itself.
