Compare electric-vehicle stocks on three connected dimensions: the quality of revenue growth, the direction of gross and operating margins, and the amount of cash the business generates after capital spending. Growth by itself can be misleading. For example, Lucid’s 2025 revenue rose 68% to $1,353.8 million, yet its gross margin was negative 92.8%.

Use the latest completed annual filing as your base year, calculate comparable ratios from reported figures, then use quarterly releases to identify trends. Keep GAAP and non-GAAP measures separate, split automotive results from energy, software, services, or regulatory credits, and read footnotes before treating cash flow or margins as sustainable.

What a useful EV-stock comparison measures

An EV manufacturer can show rapid sales growth while losing money on every vehicle, or report positive operating cash flow during a year when customer deposits or working-capital timing temporarily help liquidity. A sound comparison therefore combines four questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is revenue growing for durable reasons? Separate unit volume, pricing, regulatory credits, energy storage, software, and services.
  • Do products cover their direct costs? Track total gross margin and automotive gross margin when the company has material non-automotive businesses.
  • Is the company approaching operating breakeven? Follow operating margin and the growth of research and development, selling, general and administrative, and other operating expenses.
  • Does reported growth convert into cash? Calculate free cash flow (FCF) as operating cash flow minus capital expenditures, then divide FCF by revenue.

These measures answer different questions. Revenue indicates demand and scale; gross margin indicates product economics; operating margin shows whether the organization can support itself after overhead; and FCF shows how much cash remains after necessary investment.

Start with a comparable annual-filing table

Use the same fiscal year, currency, and accounting basis for every company. Label every figure as reported or calculated. A practical worksheet includes the following fields:

Field Why it matters How to use it
Fiscal year and currency Prevents mixing periods or currencies Use each issuer’s latest completed annual filing, then convert only when the conversion method is disclosed.
Total revenue and year-over-year growth Shows scale and recent momentum Calculate (current revenue − prior revenue) ÷ prior revenue.
Three-year revenue CAGR Smooths one unusually strong or weak year Calculate (ending revenue ÷ starting revenue)1/3 − 1 when three comparable years are available.
Automotive revenue and other revenue Reveals business mix Separate vehicles from energy generation and storage, software, services, and credits.
Total and automotive gross margin Measures direct-cost coverage Track both the level and year-to-year direction.
Operating income and operating margin Shows whether overhead is covered Operating margin equals operating income ÷ revenue.
Operating cash flow and capital expenditures Provides the inputs for FCF Use cash-flow-statement amounts for the same period.
Free cash flow and FCF margin Measures cash left after investment FCF = operating cash flow − capital expenditures; FCF margin = FCF ÷ revenue.
Cash, investments, and debt Indicates financing capacity Read maturity dates, restrictions, and interest obligations in the notes.
Deliveries and non-recurring items Explains changes in revenue and cash Identify production-ramp costs, restructuring, inventory write-downs, credits, and working-capital swings.

Do not fill an unavailable cell with an estimate. Record “not stated” and identify the issuer and period.

How to judge revenue growth quality

Calculate the basic growth rates

Year-over-year growth is:

(Current-year revenue − Prior-year revenue) ÷ Prior-year revenue × 100

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It captures the latest change but can be distorted by a low comparison base, a model launch, a price cut, or a temporary credit. A three-year compound annual growth rate is:

(Revenue in year 3 ÷ Revenue in year 0)^(1/3) − 1

Use CAGR only when the three years use comparable definitions and currencies. If a company acquires a business, changes segment reporting, or moves revenue between automotive and services, explain the break instead of presenting a mechanically precise trend.

Decompose the source of growth

Request or calculate the contribution from:

  • Vehicle volume: deliveries, production, and the mix of models sold.
  • Pricing: list-price changes, discounts, incentives, and average selling price.
  • Regulatory credits: credits sold to other manufacturers or generated under local rules.
  • Energy generation and storage: battery storage, solar, charging, or grid products.
  • Software and services: subscriptions, connectivity, maintenance, financing, and other recurring lines.

A company with flat vehicle volume but higher revenue from price increases has a different outlook from one adding customers through unit growth. Credit revenue can lift reported sales without proving that vehicle production is profitable, so identify it separately whenever material.

Example: Tesla’s reported mix

Tesla’s 2025 filing reported total revenue of $94.827 billion. It reports automotive, energy-generation-and-storage, and services-and-other revenue separately, and identifies automotive regulatory-credit revenue as its own line. The filing’s separate lines allow an analyst to test whether growth is broad-based or concentrated in credits or non-automotive operations. Tesla’s 2025 filing does not provide the dollar amounts for each of those lines, so do not infer them from total revenue.

Example: why Lucid’s growth needs context

Lucid reported 2025 annual revenue of $1,353.8 million, up 68% from 2024. That is a substantial top-line increase, but the same period produced a negative 92.8% gross margin, compared with negative 114.3% in 2024. The improvement in margin direction is relevant, yet the level shows that revenue growth had not translated into coverage of direct costs. Rank this result below a slower-growing business with positive and improving unit economics unless further evidence changes the conclusion.

Read gross margin before celebrating sales growth

What gross margin tells you

Gross margin is (revenue − cost of revenue) ÷ revenue. It indicates how much remains after direct manufacturing and product costs, before research and development, sales, general and administrative expenses, and other operating costs. A positive margin does not mean the company is profitable; it means the products, in aggregate, cover direct costs.

Use total and automotive margins separately

Energy, software, services, financing, and regulatory credits can have very different margins from vehicle sales. Compare total gross margin with automotive gross margin whenever the issuer discloses both. A rising total margin accompanied by a falling automotive margin may indicate that a higher-margin non-automotive line is changing the mix rather than that vehicle economics improved.

Tesla reported a 2025 total gross margin of 18.0% and a total automotive gross margin of 17.8%. The close values suggest that the reported total was not being transformed by a dramatically different non-automotive margin in that year, but the two measures should still be tracked independently in later periods.

Analyze the trajectory, not one percentage

For each company, record at least three annual margins when available and calculate the change in percentage points. Investigate movements caused by:

  • volume utilization and factory absorption;
  • vehicle discounts, incentives, or price reductions;
  • battery and raw-material costs;
  • new-model launch and production-ramp costs;
  • inventory write-downs or warranty charges;
  • regulatory-credit revenue; and
  • mix shifts toward energy, software, or services.

An improving negative margin can be economically meaningful, as Lucid’s move from negative 114.3% to negative 92.8% illustrates, but it remains far from breakeven until the percentage reaches zero and then becomes sustainably positive.

Use operating margin to test the path to breakeven

Operating margin includes research and development, selling and marketing, general and administrative costs, and other operating expenses after gross profit. It answers whether the company’s current gross profit can support its organization and expansion plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate operating leverage from spending cuts

If revenue rises faster than operating expenses, operating margin can improve through leverage. If margin improves because a company cuts engineering or launch spending, assess whether the reduction delays products or capacity rather than creating durable efficiency. Conversely, rising R&D or factory-support costs may be rational during a ramp, but they increase the revenue required for breakeven.

Track the breakeven math

Record operating income, operating expenses, and revenue for each year. Then ask:

  • Is gross profit growing faster than operating expenses?
  • Are losses narrowing in dollars as well as percentage terms?
  • Is management funding factories, platforms, software, or sales infrastructure ahead of demand?
  • Which costs are recurring, and which are restructuring or launch charges?

A company can report improving gross margin and still lose more money if its operating expense base expands faster than gross profit. Do not call an issuer “near breakeven” from gross margin alone.

Calculate cash conversion and cash burn

Compute free cash flow consistently

Use the cash-flow statement rather than an adjusted presentation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free cash flow = Operating cash flow − Capital expenditures

Then calculate:

Free-cash-flow margin = Free cash flow ÷ Revenue × 100

Capital expenditures should represent the cash spent on property, plant, equipment, tooling, and other necessary investment for the period. If an issuer defines FCF differently, show its non-GAAP figure in a separate column and retain your calculation from reported cash-flow items.

Worked calculation using Tesla’s 2025 figures

Tesla reported $14.747 billion of operating cash flow and $8.53 billion of capital expenditures for 2025. Subtracting the latter from the former gives calculated FCF of $6.217 billion. Dividing $6.217 billion by $94.827 billion of revenue produces an FCF margin of approximately 6.6%. The $6.217 billion and 6.6% figures are calculations from the reported inputs, not separate issuer-reported measures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret positive and negative FCF carefully

Positive FCF means operating cash flow exceeded capital expenditures in that period; it does not prove that future periods will be positive. Negative FCF can be appropriate while a company builds factories, develops platforms, or expands charging infrastructure, but the funding requirement must be matched against cash and investments, debt maturities, and access to new financing.

Lucid states that FCF provides useful information about cash generated after necessary capital expenditures, while also warning that companies calculate non-GAAP measures differently. Keep issuer-defined FCF and your own calculation visibly separate.

Check the quality of operating cash flow

Before treating cash generation as durable, inspect:

  • accounts receivable and inventory changes;
  • customer deposits and deferred revenue;
  • supplier financing and payment-term changes;
  • one-time settlements, tax payments, or refunds;
  • stock-based compensation and other non-cash adjustments; and
  • capitalized costs that move spending out of current-period expenses.

A favorable working-capital swing can make one year look cash-generative even when underlying vehicle economics remain weak.

Make accounting adjustments without destroying comparability

Keep GAAP and non-GAAP columns apart

Build one set of columns for GAAP revenue, gross profit, operating income, cash flow, and capital expenditures. Add a separate section for adjusted EBITDA, adjusted operating income, or issuer-defined FCF. Do not combine an adjusted margin for one company with a GAAP margin for another.

Read the footnotes for major cost items

Investigate stock-based compensation, depreciation, restructuring, inventory write-downs, warranty provisions, and production-ramp charges. These items may be non-cash or unusual in one period, but they can still represent real economic costs or recur during expansion.

Rivian’s 2025 filing, for example, identified $72 million of depreciation and amortization and $306 million of stock-based compensation within research and development. Keep those amounts visible when comparing R&D intensity and operating losses; excluding them may make the company appear closer to breakeven than its GAAP results indicate.

Check segment definitions and currencies

Confirm whether “automotive revenue” includes leasing, regulatory credits, financing, or software. Verify whether a company reports in dollars, euros, or another currency and whether prior-year figures were restated. If a fiscal year ends on a different date, note that seasonal effects can make a direct annual comparison less precise.

Compare companies on four decision axes

1. Growth quality

Prefer a profile where multi-year CAGR, recent growth, vehicle volume, and recurring revenue point in the same direction. Discount growth dominated by one-time credits, price increases that reduce demand, or acquisitions that obscure organic performance.

2. Profitability path

Assess gross-margin level, gross-margin direction, operating-expense leverage, and the estimated time to operating breakeven. A smaller company may have a better trajectory even with a lower current margin if losses are narrowing without starving product development.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Cash durability

Combine FCF margin with capex intensity, liquidity runway, and external financing needs. A company that repeatedly funds operations through equity or debt issuance carries a different risk from one that finances expansion internally.

4. Business mix and scale

Compare automotive volume with energy, software, and services contributions, production footprint, factory utilization, and model breadth. Scale can spread fixed costs, but expansion also raises depreciation, tooling, inventory, and execution risk.

Step-by-step workflow for comparing two EV stocks

  1. Define the peer set. Decide whether you are comparing vehicle manufacturers, diversified energy-and-auto companies, or businesses at similar production stages. Do not mix a mature producer with a pre-scale developer without labeling the difference.
  2. Download each latest annual filing. Record fiscal year-end, reporting currency, segment definitions, and whether prior periods were restated.
  3. Enter reported figures. Capture revenue, cost of revenue, gross profit, operating income, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, cash, investments, debt, deliveries, and major one-time items.
  4. Calculate ratios. Compute year-over-year growth, three-year CAGR where possible, total and automotive gross margins, operating margin, FCF, and FCF margin.
  5. Decompose revenue. Attribute changes to volume, pricing, credits, energy storage, software, and services. Flag any component the filing does not quantify.
  6. Explain margin changes. Tie each major movement to mix, pricing, materials, utilization, launch costs, write-downs, or other disclosed drivers.
  7. Test cash quality. Reconcile operating cash flow to working-capital changes, customer deposits, supplier financing, and non-cash adjustments.
  8. Assess funding needs. Compare cash and investments with the recent cash-burn rate, capex plan, debt maturities, and likely external financing.
  9. Review quarterly evidence. Use sequential quarters to identify inflections, but avoid declaring a trend from a single quarter.
  10. Write a qualified conclusion. State which company has stronger evidence on growth quality, profitability path, and cash durability, and identify the metric that could change that assessment.

Use quarterly releases to confirm, not replace, annual analysis

The annual filing is the cleanest base because it covers a full production and selling cycle. Quarterly results can reveal acceleration or deterioration earlier, but seasonality, model launches, shipment timing, and working-capital movements make individual quarters noisy.

Tesla’s second-quarter 2025 investor summary presents sequential quarterly gross margin, operating margin, and FCF figures. Treat those figures as a trend series: look for several quarters moving in the same direction, then reconcile the movement with deliveries, pricing, mix, and capital spending. A single quarter should not overturn a full-year conclusion without a disclosed structural change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Ranking by revenue growth alone: Pair every growth figure with gross margin and cash conversion.
  • Using total margin for a mixed business: Add automotive margin when energy, software, services, or credits are material.
  • Mixing GAAP and adjusted figures: Put them in separate columns and identify every adjustment.
  • Ignoring stock compensation: Keep the expense visible when evaluating R&D and dilution risk.
  • Calling one positive cash-flow year sustainable: Check working capital, deposits, supplier terms, and one-time items.
  • Comparing unlike periods: Align fiscal years, currencies, segment definitions, and restatements.
  • Hiding missing data: Use “not stated” rather than estimates that imply unsupported precision.
  • Confusing improving losses with profitability: A negative margin that becomes less negative is progress, not breakeven.
  • Using a valuation conclusion without valuation data: Revenue, margins, and cash flow describe operating quality; they do not establish whether a share price is cheap or expensive.

What this framework can and cannot tell you

This method can show whether growth is broad-based, whether vehicle economics are improving, whether operating costs are scaling, and whether investment is being funded internally. It cannot produce a complete global peer ranking, a valuation multiple comparison, or an investment recommendation without a defined peer universe, current share prices, share counts, and complete balance-sheet data.

The strongest comparison is therefore a living worksheet: annual filings establish the baseline, quarterly releases update the direction, and footnotes determine whether the headline ratios represent durable economics or temporary accounting and timing effects.
