Compare the local-currency amount your recipient can actually use and how long it takes to become available—not just a service’s advertised fee or blockchain confirmation time. The fairest comparison uses the same corridor, amount, funding source, stablecoin, and payout method for every quote.
What to compare before choosing a service
Crypto remittances involve more than sending tokens. Conversion, compliance checks, a recipient’s cash-out, and local payment rails can all affect the final cost and delivery time. Compare four outcomes for the same transfer:
- Total sender cost: everything deducted or charged to send the money.
- Recipient’s net payout: the local-currency amount the recipient can use after conversion and deductions.
- End-to-end availability: the time until the recipient can use or withdraw the funds.
- Quote certainty: whether the rate and payout are final, estimated, conditional, or subject to change.
Availability and costs depend on the corridor and payout method. There is no evidence here to support a blanket claim that crypto remittances are always cheaper or faster than traditional channels.
How to make a like-for-like comparison
- Set identical transfer conditions. Use the same send amount, origin and destination, date and time, funding method, stablecoin, and recipient payout method for each service. A quote for a bank payout is not directly comparable with one for cash pickup.
- Write down what the sender pays and what gets converted. A displayed transfer fee may not show the full amount charged to the sender or the amount that actually enters the conversion.
- Compare the offered exchange rate with a reference rate. Record the provider’s rate and compare it with a contemporaneous reference rate. The difference is a cost even if the provider advertises no fixed fee. The UK Financial Conduct Authority warns that describing a transfer as “zero cost” can mislead when an exchange-rate markup applies: FCA guidance on price transparency in international payments.
- Add every charge along the route. Check provider and agent fees, applicable taxes, blockchain network fees, exchange or conversion charges, intermediary or recipient-bank charges, wallet withdrawal charges, and cash-out fees. A displayed service fee is not necessarily the end-to-end cost.
- Use the final local-currency payout as the key result. Check whether third-party fees or a later conversion could reduce the amount shown in the quote.
- Measure time to usable funds. Start when the sender pays and stop when the recipient can use or withdraw the payout. Do not treat blockchain confirmation or transfer initiation as proof that the recipient has access to the money.
- Record quote conditions. Note whether the rate or fee is promotional, temporary, limited to a first transfer, or conditional on a particular funding or payout method.
Why a blockchain confirmation is not the delivery time
A transfer can be confirmed on-chain before the recipient has usable money. The service may still need to convert the stablecoin, complete compliance checks, process a withdrawal, or deliver funds through a local bank or cash-out network. Those on- and off-ramp steps can add both cost and delay.

In its 2026 mystery-shopping exercise, Banca d’Italia sent 200 USDC across ten corridors between Italy and Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Japan. End-to-end settlement varied with local payment infrastructure: tested routes using instant payment systems finished in under 20 minutes, while routes requiring standard bank transfers took one to two business days. These are observations from that exercise, not service guarantees. Banca d’Italia’s 2026 study identifies on- and off-ramp frictions as major sources of cost and duration.
What the cost evidence can—and cannot—show
In the same Banca d’Italia exercise, total costs ranged from 0.30% to nearly 9% of the transferred amount. The study found no systematic cost advantage for stablecoins over traditional remittance channels, and on-chain transfer costs were only a marginal share of total cost on the tested routes. Those results describe the exercise, not a universal market average or a live quote for a particular service.

For your own route, a low or zero network fee does not establish that the remittance is inexpensive. The conversion rate, payout charges, and other steps can matter more than the blockchain transfer itself. Compare the net payout and total amount paid rather than ranking services by one line item.
What to look for in a quote and receipt
For covered US remittance transfers, Regulation E disclosure fields include the transfer amount, provider fees and taxes, total, exchange rate, applicable covered third-party fees, the amount the recipient receives, and the date funds will be available. The rules also address the possibility that non-covered third-party fees or taxes may reduce the amount received. Whether a particular crypto transfer or provider is covered depends on the facts and applicable law; this is not a rule that automatically covers every crypto transaction. See the CFPB’s Regulation E remittance-transfer disclosure rule.

The CFPB says costs may include provider, agent, and third-party fees, taxes, and exchange-rate spread. It cautions that “free” or “no fee” marketing can obscure spread, conversion fees, or wallet withdrawal costs, and that advertised delivery times should reflect when funds are actually available. In its 2024 Circular 2024-02, the CFPB states: “Providers must thus take care not to engage in deceptive acts or practices in their marketing claims about the speed of a remittance transfer.” This guidance concerns US consumer-protection law, not a global legal rule. CFPB Circular 2024-02.
UK FCA examples recommend showing the applied exchange rate, explaining markups, presenting total fees and recipient amount, and explaining possible intermediary or recipient-bank deductions before the customer commits. OECD guidance published in 2026 calls for disclosure of total transaction cost including currency conversion, expected delivery time, payment-status tracking, and terms of service. These are useful transparency checks, but legal obligations depend on the jurisdiction and transaction. For permitted US remittance-disclosure estimates, Federal Reserve rules allow an exchange-rate estimate based on a recent publicly available wholesale rate and, where applicable, a provider’s or correspondent’s typical spread. Check whether the rate shown is final or estimated and when it can change. Federal Reserve Regulation E compliance guide.

Fees and performance vary by corridor, and the available study does not establish current prices or delivery times for named providers or enough evidence to rank services for an individual route. Check live quotes for your corridor and verify supported funding and payout methods, local availability, licensing and consumer protections, custody and redemption arrangements, quote-expiry terms, and cash-out charges. A “cheapest” or “fastest” label is meaningful only when based on a documented, like-for-like comparison.
