The cheapest-looking crypto exchange is not necessarily the cheapest place to trade. Compare the same asset pair, quote currency, order size, order type, account volume tier, and time of day. Then calculate the all-in cost: explicit trading fee plus spread, expected slippage or market impact, payment or deposit charges, and any withdrawal and blockchain network fees.

This method works for order-book platforms and instant-buy screens. It also explains why a low advertised fee can cost more when liquidity is thin, why a market order can fill away from its preview, and when moving coins to a self-custody wallet changes the economics.

Start with an all-in cost, not the headline fee

For a fair comparison, express every cost in the same currency and as a percentage of the trade value. A practical model is:

Not every transaction includes every item. A limit order that remains on an exchange may have no withdrawal cost yet, while an instant purchase funded by a card can have several charges before you own the asset. The point is to include the costs that apply to your actual end-to-end plan.

Rates are not fixed. Coinbase says simple buy and sell quotes include a spread, while Advanced Trade connects directly to an order book without an included spread in the quoted price. Fees can also vary with payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction, and asset. A quote that was cheapest five minutes ago may not be cheapest when you submit.

A reproducible eight-step comparison

Use the following sequence whenever you compare venues. Keep screenshots or notes so you can audit the result later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Fix the exact market. Choose one pair, such as BTC/USD, and keep the quote currency identical. BTC/EUR and BTC/USD are different markets with different liquidity and funding costs.
  2. Fix the notional amount. Record the amount you will spend or sell, not only the number of coins. A $200 order can interact with a very different portion of the order book than a $20,000 order.
  3. Record the execution type. Label the transaction as market, limit, instant-buy, recurring purchase, conversion, or another interface. An instant quote and an order-book order do not expose price risk in the same way.
  4. Record your fee tier. Note the account’s trailing-30-day volume and the maker or taker rate that will apply. If the venue has pair-specific pricing or a promotion, write down the expiration and eligibility conditions.
  5. Capture the live market. At the same moment on each venue, record the best bid, best ask, displayed spread, and visible depth near those prices. Crypto liquidity changes continuously, so comparisons made hours apart are not controlled.
  6. Preview the order. Write down the quoted receive amount, explicit trading fee, payment charge, exchange rate, and quote-expiration timer. Do not rely on a fee page alone; the preview is where method- and asset-specific charges appear.
  7. Estimate market impact. For an order-book trade, walk through successive price levels until your full size is filled. The difference between the first available price and the size-weighted average is your expected impact. A limit order can cap the worst acceptable price, although it may not fill.
  8. Add the exit or custody leg. If the plan ends with a transfer, include the exchange’s withdrawal charge, the selected blockchain network fee, minimum withdrawal, and any receiving-venue deposit rule. Repeat the capture as close to submission as possible.

What each cost component actually measures

Explicit trading fee

An explicit fee is the percentage or fixed amount shown separately from the execution price. Order-book venues generally classify a filled order as maker or taker. A maker order adds resting liquidity, usually through a limit order that does not execute immediately. A taker order removes existing liquidity, commonly through a market order or a limit order that crosses the spread.

Kraken’s current fee explainer says the fee is charged when an order executes and varies with 30-day USD volume, trading pair, and maker or taker status. The cited schedule ranges from -0.02% maker to 0.80% taker; the negative maker figure means a qualifying tier can receive a rebate rather than pay a positive fee. That range is a schedule example, not a promise that every account or pair receives those rates.

Coinbase also uses maker and taker pricing for order-book trades and provides discounts based on trailing-30-day volume. Your comparison should therefore use the rate displayed for your account, not the venue’s lowest advertised tier.

Spread

The spread is the gap between the best available buy price (ask) and sell price (bid). Coinbase defines it as the difference between the current market price and the price at which you buy or sell. On a simple-buy screen, the spread can be embedded in the quote, so the interface may show one all-in exchange rate instead of separate bid and ask prices.

To estimate the immediate spread cost, compare the quoted buy price with the quoted sell-side market reference for the same timestamp. For a round trip, you normally cross the spread twice: once when buying and again when selling. Do not treat the displayed mid-market price as a guaranteed execution price.

Slippage and market impact

Slippage is the difference between the expected execution price and the actual fill. It can be favorable or unfavorable, but buyers usually experience an unfavorable increase and sellers an unfavorable decrease when the market moves or available liquidity is insufficient. Market impact is the portion caused by your own order consuming multiple levels of the book.

Coinbase notes that low liquidity or low activity increases slippage. Its conversion example cancels when slippage exceeds 10%, illustrating that some interfaces impose a protection threshold rather than guaranteeing a fill at the previewed rate. A cancellation threshold is not a promise that smaller slippage will be zero.

Binance’s educational material recommends inspecting the depth view. It explains that higher trading volume generally corresponds to smaller percentage spreads, while volatility and larger order size can increase slippage. These are general relationships; measure the exact pair and size instead of applying a market-wide average.

Payment and deposit charges

Funding can add a fixed or percentage charge that is unrelated to the trading fee. The amount may depend on whether you use a bank transfer, card, or another payment rail, and on your country. A venue can advertise a low trading rate while a particular payment method makes a small purchase expensive.

Include any deposit fee, currency-conversion charge, and delay risk. If you must convert your local currency before depositing, record that conversion rate separately from the crypto execution rate so you do not hide a cost inside a single percentage.

Withdrawal and network fees

A withdrawal charge is set by the venue; a blockchain network fee pays for transaction processing and can vary with congestion and the selected network. Some venues bundle these into one displayed amount, while others show them separately. Check the network supported by both the sending exchange and your destination address. Sending on an incompatible network can make funds inaccessible.

Simple quotes versus order books

Feature Simple-buy or conversion screen Order-book trading
Price shown Usually a single quoted rate for a short acceptance window Bid, ask, and multiple price levels
Spread visibility May be embedded in the quote Visible as the difference between best ask and best bid
Fee presentation May be bundled with the quoted rate or shown at confirmation Maker or taker fee is normally listed separately
Execution certainty Quote may be accepted or refreshed; terms can expire Market orders normally fill, but price can move; limit orders control price but may remain unfilled
Best use Convenience when the quoted total is acceptable Price-sensitive trading where you can read depth and manage execution

Do not compare a simple-buy quote on one venue with a maker fee on another and call the latter cheaper. The first may already include spread and other adjustments. Compare the final amount received for the same cash outlay, then separately analyze why the totals differ.

How to read depth and estimate a realistic fill

The top-of-book price applies only to the quantity available at that level. Suppose the best ask offers 0.10 BTC, the next ask offers 0.20 BTC at a higher price, and your order is 0.25 BTC. Your fill is split across at least two levels. Calculate a size-weighted average:

Average fill = (quantity1 × price1 + quantity2 × price2 + …) ÷ total quantity

Compare that average with the first ask to estimate market impact before adding the explicit fee. Repeat the calculation on the sell side using bids. A deep-looking book can still be misleading if displayed orders disappear quickly, so treat visible depth as an estimate rather than a guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a limit order, choose a maximum buy price or minimum sell price that you can accept. The trade-off is execution risk: a limit order may fill only partially or not at all if the market does not reach it. A market order prioritizes completion but accepts variable price.

Maker and taker tiers: why account volume changes the answer

Most schedules use trailing 30-day volume rather than a permanent account label. A trader who crosses a threshold can receive a lower rate for subsequent fills, while a new or low-volume account pays the base tier. Pair-specific schedules, stablecoin markets, and promotions can create additional differences.

Item to record Why it changes the comparison
Trailing-30-day volume Determines the tier on venues that use volume discounts, including the current Coinbase and Kraken schedules.
Maker or taker status A resting order and an immediately matched order can have different rates; a maker rebate is possible at some Kraken tiers.
Pair category Fees and liquidity can differ between the same asset quoted in different currencies or stablecoins.
Promotion end date A temporary discount should not be treated as the recurring cost of the account.
Jurisdiction Available products, payment rails, and fee schedules can change by country or region.

When documenting a result, write the tier and timestamp beside the percentage. “0.20% fee” is incomplete without saying whose account, which pair, and when.

Worked example: turning a quote into a comparable total

Assume, purely as an illustration, that you plan to spend $10,000 on BTC. Venue A shows a 0.40% explicit fee, a 0.20% effective spread, and an estimated 0.30% impact for your order size. There is no payment charge, but withdrawing later costs $25 plus a network charge quoted at $8.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trading-stage cost is:

$10,000 × (0.004 + 0.002 + 0.003) = $90

If you withdraw, add $33, making the modeled end-to-end cost $123. This arithmetic is not a market measurement; it demonstrates how to combine separate line items. Replace every percentage and fixed amount with the values from your live preview and order-book calculation. A different venue with a higher trading fee could still be cheaper if its spread, impact, or withdrawal charge is lower.

Jurisdiction, access, and operational checks

A fee comparison is useful only if you can legally and practically use the venue. Confirm the supported country, identity-verification requirements, available fiat currency, deposit and withdrawal rails, and the exact asset and network you need. An account that cannot withdraw your chosen asset, or that requires an expensive currency conversion, is not a viable low-cost option.

Also check status and settlement constraints before placing a time-sensitive order. Maintenance, delayed bank transfers, withdrawal holds, and network congestion can create an opportunity cost even when the posted fee is low. Treat availability and reliability as decision factors alongside price.

Custody changes the end point of the calculation

Leaving coins on an exchange and withdrawing to self-custody are different risk choices. Trezor explains that when an exchange holds the keys, the exchange controls access; its hardware-wallet approach keeps keys offline and uses on-device verification. Ledger likewise describes private keys remaining offline in a Secure Element protected by its operating system.

A hardware wallet does not erase exchange-provider charges or blockchain network fees. It becomes relevant after the purchase, when you calculate the withdrawal leg and decide whether the reduction in exchange-counterparty exposure justifies that cost and the responsibility of securing your recovery information. Verify the destination address and network on the device before approving a transfer.

Choose according to the job you need done

For a small, infrequent purchase

Prioritize the final quoted amount, payment charge, minimum withdrawal, and ease of verification. A tiny explicit trading fee is irrelevant if a fixed funding or withdrawal charge consumes a large share of the purchase.

For repeated, high-volume trading

Prioritize the applicable 30-day tier, maker-versus-taker mix, pair liquidity, and API or order-entry controls you actually use. Model several order sizes because a fee discount cannot compensate for substantial market impact.

For price-controlled execution

Use the order book, inspect depth, and consider a limit order with a defined price boundary. Accept that the order may not fill and establish what you will do if only part of it executes.

For a purchase that will move to self-custody

Include the withdrawal minimum, exchange charge, network selection, and expected arrival amount. Compare the cost per dollar for your intended size, not the fee in isolation.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

  • Comparing different pairs: use the same asset and quote currency on every venue.
  • Using a fee-table maximum or minimum: apply your account’s current tier and identify whether the order is maker or taker.
  • Ignoring the spread in an instant quote: compare the quoted rate with a contemporaneous market reference or order-book mid-price.
  • Assuming a market order fills at the preview: calculate depth-based impact and allow for movement before matching.
  • Testing at different times: capture prices and depth together, because liquidity and volatility change continuously.
  • Forgetting fixed charges: include payment, deposit, withdrawal, and network amounts in the same all-in calculation.
  • Treating a promotion as permanent: record the end date and recompute after it expires.
  • Choosing an unsupported network: confirm that the destination accepts the exact network selected at withdrawal.
  • Assuming self-custody is free: a hardware wallet changes key control, not exchange or blockchain charges.
  • Relying on an old screenshot: refresh the quote immediately before submission and verify the final receive amount.

The defensible answer to “Which exchange has the lowest fees?” is therefore conditional: for your country, pair, size, order type, volume tier, funding method, and withdrawal destination, calculate the complete transaction path and choose the lowest total that still meets your execution and custody requirements.
