Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Compare the amount the recipient can actually use—not just the advertised transfer fee or a token’s blockchain speed. For the same country pair, amount, funding method, quote time and payout method, compare the final local-currency value, end-to-end delivery time, access requirements and risks. A stablecoin may be cheaper or faster on a particular route, but neither result is guaranteed.
Start with the exact transfer you need
A route is only comparable with another route if both solve the same job for the sender and recipient. Fix the details before collecting quotes:
- Sending and receiving countries.
- Amount and currency the sender will pay.
- Funding method, such as a bank transfer or card.
- What the recipient needs: local bank deposit, mobile-money balance, cash, or a token they can actually use.
- When you need the funds available and whether the recipient can complete identity checks or account setup.
Availability, limits, payout options and rules differ by corridor and provider. Do not assume that a service, token, network or cash-out route available in one country is available in another.
Compare the recipient’s net amount, not the headline fee
Collect comparable, timestamped quotes
- Request a quote for the same send amount, funding method and recipient payout method from each conventional remittance provider and any token route. A conventional transfer quote can be a useful baseline; for example, check Wise’s current quote and route eligibility rather than assuming availability or a particular price.
- Record the quote time, how long it remains valid, the exchange rate offered, every listed fee, and the amount the recipient is expected to receive.
- For a token route, identify the asset, network, and each service involved in converting fiat to tokens and tokens back to local currency.
Include every cost along the route
Count the sender’s transfer or funding fee, any exchange-rate markup, crypto purchase and sale charges, network fee, intermediary or liquidity costs, and recipient withdrawal or cash-out fee. Note who pays each charge. A quoted fee of zero does not mean the transfer has no cost if the exchange rate is worse.

Compare the final usable value in the recipient’s local currency. Use the provider’s actual offered rate for the calculation; a mid-market rate is only a benchmark, not the rate the customer necessarily receives. If a quote shows a token amount rather than local currency, include the cost and uncertainty of converting that token into something the recipient can use.
The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide page, last updated August 18, 2025, displays a 6.36% global average remittance cost and says its comparison covers 367 corridors, from 48 sending countries to 105 receiving countries. That is a dated global benchmark, not a live quote or the price for any particular route. Use the World Bank corridor comparison to investigate the relevant route rather than applying the average to your transfer.
Compare end-to-end delivery time
Separate blockchain settlement from the whole transfer. A token can arrive on-chain before the recipient has usable money: fiat funding, provider checks, confirmations, token conversion, local payout processing and recipient withdrawal can each add time or fail independently.

Ask each provider for the expected time from sender funding to the recipient having usable local currency or a usable token. Check whether quoted timing depends on business hours, identity verification, payment method or other conditions. For a token route, note the expected time at each step—funding, purchase, transfer, sale and payout—rather than treating a block confirmation as delivery.

Check whether the recipient can receive and use the payout
Confirm that both sides can practically access the route. Verify the provider’s country coverage, transaction limits, recipient requirements, payout methods and operating hours. For a token payout, establish whether the recipient can safely hold that token and whether a usable local off-ramp exists. A fast transfer to a wallet is not useful if the recipient cannot convert, withdraw or spend the balance.
Cross-border payment systems face different institutional arrangements and limited interoperability. The BIS paper Cross-border payment technologies: innovations and challenges, published March 11, 2026, says: “Cross-border payments (XBP), particularly remittances and retail transactions, remain more costly, slower, less accessible, and less transparent than domestic payments.” That is why a result on one corridor should not be assumed to apply to another.

Assess token, provider and transaction risks
Do not treat a peg as a bank deposit or guaranteed redemption
A stablecoin’s target value does not make it identical to a bank deposit or guarantee that every holder can redeem it at par in every circumstance. Before comparing a token route, check what asset backs the token, who issues it, what reserve and redemption information is disclosed, where redemption is available, and what could happen during a loss of peg or reduced liquidity.
About 98% of stablecoin value was dollar-denominated, according to a BIS paper published May 5, 2026. This is a market-level observation, not evidence that every stablecoin is dollar-backed or that a dollar token is suitable for a particular recipient. See the BIS paper on stablecoins’ impact on the international monetary and financial system.

Check the service and the recipient’s recovery options
Verify the provider’s authorization and complaint process where relevant, the applicable local restrictions, and the provider’s terms for custody and redemption. For a self-custody route, confirm who controls the wallet keys, how the recipient will recover access, and whether the selected network matches the receiving wallet. Transfers to a wrong address or incompatible network may be difficult or impossible to reverse; find out what recourse exists before sending.

Do not infer consumer savings from evidence about market flows. BIS Working Paper 1265 studies Bitcoin, Ether, Tether and USD Coin cross-border flows between 184 countries from 2017 through 2024. Its abstract reports stronger links between stablecoin flows, remittance costs and transactional imperatives, especially in emerging and developing economies; it does not establish that an individual consumer will save by using a token. Stablecoins may reduce cost or increase speed for some cross-border payments, but the outcome depends on route design, service layers and receiving conditions. The IMF identifies possible efficiency gains alongside concerns including fragmentation and runs in its May 11, 2026 discussion of tokenized finance and money. Its December 4, 2025 explainer says some remittances can cost up to 20% of the amount sent; that is an upper-bound contextual statement, not a typical fee or a quote for your route. The explainer also notes that stablecoins are substantially used for crypto-asset trading. Read the IMF explainer.
An August 7, 2026 IMF speech says the end-user cost comparison is not uniform: on- and off-ramp fees and relative exchange rates can change the result. It describes the underlying IMF research as forthcoming, so treat this as emerging evidence rather than a settled result for every corridor. Read the IMF speech. BIS Annual Economic Report 2025 material likewise cautions that lower costs and faster speeds are not guaranteed and flags consumer-protection risks. Read the BIS discussion.

Price transparency matters for conventional transfers too: Wise’s G20+ Scorecard Report 2026 focuses on consumer price transparency and notes that FX markups may not be clear to consumers. Compare the actual offered rate and recipient total, not just the displayed transfer fee.
Make the choice against your priorities
After gathering quotes, choose the route that best meets the recipient’s needs at an acceptable total cost and risk. A token route can look inexpensive at the network layer yet become costly or unusable after conversion and cash-out. A conventional service may show a clear recipient total but have different coverage, timing or payout constraints. Treat any claimed speed or price advantage as something to verify on the exact corridor.
Quick Recap
- If the recipient needs local currency, prioritize the net local-currency amount and confirmed payout path.
- If timing matters, compare the full funding-to-usable-funds estimate and the conditions attached to it.
- If the recipient is unfamiliar with wallets or self-custody, include setup, security and recovery burden in the comparison.
- If either route depends on a provider, token redemption or local off-ramp, check its current terms and availability before sending.
