A dollar subscription price cannot be fairly compared with a rupee electricity estimate until you account for currency conversion, taxes, payment fees, and plan limits.
Start by matching the job you want to run
“Cloud streaming” can describe different services. A cloud service that loops uploaded videos is not the same as a cloud PC running a live game, a cloud encoder processing a camera feed, or a relay sending one incoming stream to several destinations. Compare each service only with a local setup that does the same work at comparable quality.
- Uploaded prerecorded videos: A looping service plays files you upload and sends them to YouTube. - Live gameplay, camera, or production: This needs a setup capable of encoding a live feed, potentially with overlays, external audio, or capture hardware. YouTube explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming and documents encoder-based workflows: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. A prerecorded-loop subscription is not a substitute for this workload.
- Cloud PC or relay: These have different compute, connection, and plan requirements from a prerecorded-video loop. Compare their full terms against the local equipment and work they replace.

Calculate the PC’s electricity cost
Measure at the wall
Use a plug-in electricity monitor or another suitable meter to measure the PC’s average wall draw while it performs the actual streaming task. Do not use the power supply’s rated wattage as the PC’s consumption: the rating describes capacity, not what the system draws during your workload. If you want the incremental cost of streaming on a PC that is already running, compare its draw with and without the streaming task and use the difference.

Use the hours and tariff that apply to you
Calculate the monthly energy and cost with these formulas:
- Monthly PC energy (kWh) = average wall draw (W) ÷ 1,000 × streaming hours per month.
- Monthly electricity estimate (₹) = monthly PC energy (kWh) × applicable marginal tariff (₹/kWh).
Use the marginal rate for the next units on your household bill, rather than assuming one national household tariff. The result can differ by utility, location, and tariff structure.

Worked example—not a typical-PC estimate
A hypothetical PC drawing 150 W at the wall for 120 hours in a month would use 18 kWh: 150 ÷ 1,000 × 120. At an assumed marginal tariff of ₹8/kWh, the incremental energy charge would be ₹144: 18 × 8. These are arithmetic examples using stated assumptions, not a measured PC result or a recommended current tariff. Substitute your meter reading, run hours, and bill rate.
Convert the cloud price into a comparable bill
Start with the provider’s current quote for the plan and usage you need, then calculate what you would actually pay in rupees. Include the payment provider’s exchange rate, applicable taxes, and any foreign-currency or card fees. A generic USD-to-INR spot rate may not match the amount charged to your card; use an actual billed amount when one is available.

Check whether the subscription covers your runtime and workload. Include limits or extra charges for hours, streams, storage, transfers, restarts, or other usage where applicable. Confirm that the service is available in your region and that its connection and upload requirements suit your setup.
- Compare the same number of streaming hours and the same number of channels.
- Match the type of work: prerecorded loop, live encoding, cloud PC, or relay.
- Match quality needs, including resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, overlays, and transcoding.
- Account for local upload bandwidth and any transfer costs the provider charges.
- Include relevant operational costs such as monitoring or recovery effort if they matter to your decision.
If the PC is already owned and the question is only recurring electricity versus a subscription, do not assign its full purchase price to the monthly electricity comparison. Hardware cost belongs in a separate total-ownership comparison when you are deciding whether to buy equipment.

Compare the result without overclaiming
Put the local and cloud estimates side by side for the same period. For example, use one month of measured PC electricity against one month of the cloud plan’s actual rupee-equivalent billed cost, after fees and taxes. If one option has a different runtime limit or does a different job, note that rather than treating the prices as equivalent.
There is no single answer for every Indian household. The electricity side depends on actual wall draw, hours, and marginal tariff; the cloud side depends on current service terms and the amount actually charged after conversion and fees. Reliability and convenience can also matter: a PC depends on local power and internet, while cloud services have their own availability and connection requirements.
