There is no universally “best” bank fixed deposit. A sound comparison uses the same principal, tenure, customer category, callable status, payout option and booking date, then checks effective yield, premature-closure cost, liquidity, tax impact and deposit-insurance concentration. Canara Bank’s rate card effective 17 March 2026 illustrates why the details matter: it lists 6.25% for many callable slabs from one year through 10 years, 6.50% for 444 days and 6.60% for 555 days. Those figures are date-specific examples, not permanent recommendations.

What a fair Canara Bank FD comparison includes

Comparing only the largest percentage on a rate page can produce the wrong choice. A fixed deposit is a package of return, access to cash, operating features, tax treatment and deposit-insurance exposure. Compare the same facts for Canara Bank, State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.

  • Return: quoted rate, compounding convention, maturity amount or total periodic payouts, and after-tax yield.
  • Liquidity: whether the deposit is callable, premature-withdrawal rules, penalty, sweep options and any loan or overdraft facility.
  • Safety: how much of your principal and accrued interest falls within the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) limit at each bank.
  • Convenience: online and branch servicing, nomination, renewal instructions and tax documents.
  • Fit: whether the deposit is for an emergency reserve, regular income, a known future expense or long-term capital preservation.

If any of these variables differs, the comparison is not really between like-for-like deposits.

Read Canara’s rate card by tenure, date and customer category

Canara Bank’s published card effective 17 March 2026 gives three useful reference points:

Canara FD slab Published rate Qualification
Many callable deposits from 1 year through 10 years 6.25% Illustrative slab on the card effective 17 March 2026
444 days 6.50% Illustrative dated slab on the same card
555 days 6.60% Illustrative dated slab on the same card

These are not a promise that every customer or every product receives the same return. Rate cards separate customer categories and product features. Canara, SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank publish separate senior-citizen rates or uplifts, so use the exact tenure row for the depositor you are pricing. A general-customer quote and a senior-citizen quote are different inputs, not interchangeable alternatives.

Record the card’s effective date when you compare it. A rate can change between the day you research and the day you book, and a special 444-day or 555-day slab is not equivalent to a one-year deposit simply because both are described as short term.

Set a common basis before you calculate return

Fix the principal and tenure

Enter the same principal for every bank and use an identical number of days or the same stated tenure convention. Do not compare a ₹1 lakh quote from one bank with a ₹5 lakh quote from another, or a 444-day product with a 12-month product while calling the rates directly comparable.

Choose cumulative or periodic payout

A cumulative FD retains interest until maturity, while a monthly, quarterly or other periodic-payout FD distributes interest during the term. A maturity amount from a cumulative deposit cannot be compared directly with a periodic-payout quote. Record the payout option beside the rate and use each bank’s calculator or disclosure to obtain the maturity value or the sum of scheduled payouts.

Capture compounding and the booking date

Compounding frequency, day-count conventions and the date on which the deposit is booked affect the result. The quoted annual percentage is only one input. Keep the principal, tenure, payout convention, customer category, callable status and booking date fixed while you calculate.

Compare effective, after-tax yield

For a fair decision, compare the cash you receive with the amount invested and account for the tax treatment that applies to you. Two deposits with similar pre-tax rates can produce different after-tax outcomes for people in different tax brackets. Keep each bank’s tax-document and TDS information with the calculation; do not treat a headline rate as an after-tax return.

Understand the premature-withdrawal rules

Breaking an FD before maturity changes the return. The applicable rule can use the rate for the period the deposit actually ran, a stated reduction, or both. Read the product disclosure rather than assuming that the maturity rate will be paid.

Bank Premature-closure rule stated in the available policy material
Canara Bank A 1% penalty formula applies; the exact product disclosure controls the calculation.
HDFC Bank A 1% reduction applies to applicable premature withdrawals.
SBI A 0.50% or 1% reduction rule applies, depending on the deposit terms.
ICICI Bank The rate applicable on the booking date for the period actually run is used, less the applicable penalty.

The wording matters. A “1% reduction” is not the same as simply subtracting one percentage point from the rate you remember seeing today. Some products also specify a minimum holding period or exclusions. Write down the minimum period, calculation base and any exception before you commit funds.

Callable and non-callable deposits

Canara’s policy distinguishes callable and non-callable deposits. A non-callable deposit does not permit premature withdrawal under that policy. A callable deposit can generally be closed early subject to the product’s penalty and other conditions. Never infer callable status from the bank name or from a similar-looking tenure; check the product label on the booking screen or advice.

Loans and overdrafts as an alternative to breaking the FD

Canara’s policy says loans or overdrafts are generally allowed against deposits, subject to exceptions. This facility can preserve the FD’s maturity structure while providing short-term liquidity, but the borrowing rate, margin, documentation and eligibility still need to be checked. Compare the cost of borrowing with the loss caused by premature closure instead of assuming either option is cheaper.

Use DICGC insurance as a separate safety test

Deposit insurance is independent of the interest rate. DICGC guidance states that each depositor is insured for eligible principal plus interest up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, when held in the same right and capacity. Branches of the same bank are aggregated; opening accounts at different branches does not create a fresh ₹5 lakh limit.

“Each depositor in a bank is insured upto a maximum of ₹ 5,00,000 … for both principal and interest amount held by him in the same right and same capacity.” — Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation, Guide to Deposit Insurance.

Different banks receive separate insurance limits. For example, ₹3 lakh plus accrued interest at one bank and ₹3 lakh plus accrued interest at a second bank are assessed separately by bank. Two branches of one bank are assessed together. Because the limit includes interest, a deposit that starts below ₹5 lakh can move above the insured amount as interest accumulates.

When you compare Canara, SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, list every existing deposit at each institution, not just the new FD. Also record the ownership capacity used for each deposit. The relevant test is the depositor, bank, right and capacity shown in the deposit records; do not assume that a different branch or account number changes the aggregation.

Build a comparison worksheet that survives rate changes

Create one row per proposed deposit and capture these fields before booking:

  1. Product identity: bank, exact product name, tenure, callable or non-callable status and the rate-card effective date.
  2. Customer category: general or senior-citizen rate, plus any category condition that must remain true.
  3. Cash-flow basis: principal, booking date, cumulative or periodic payout and quoted rate.
  4. Outcome: maturity value or each periodic payout, compounding convention and calculated after-tax yield.
  5. Early-access terms: premature-closure penalty, minimum holding period, exceptions and the rate used for the actual period.
  6. Liquidity alternatives: sweep feature, loan or overdraft against the FD, margin and eligibility.
  7. Instructions at maturity: auto-renewal setting and whether the principal, interest or both renew.
  8. Servicing: online opening, branch support, nomination process and the documents needed to change instructions.
  9. Tax records: TDS or tax-document information supplied by the bank and the records you will retain.
  10. Insurance allocation: total principal and interest already held at that bank in the same right and capacity, compared with the ₹5 lakh DICGC limit.

Save the rate card, calculator result, deposit advice and maturity instruction. These documents show what was actually booked if a later rate-card revision creates confusion.

Compare each bank on the decision axes

Return

Use the same principal and payout convention, then compare maturity cash or total payouts. Canara’s 6.50% 444-day and 6.60% 555-day examples may look attractive against a 6.25% longer-tenure slab, but the higher percentage also locks the money for a different period. Compare annualized and after-tax outcomes, not the largest isolated number.

Liquidity

Check whether the specific FD is callable, how the penalty is calculated, whether a minimum holding period applies and whether a loan or overdraft is available. A slightly lower rate can be rational for money that may be needed unexpectedly if the alternative product is non-callable or expensive to break.

Safety

Apply the DICGC test to your total relationship with each bank. Moving an FD from one branch to another does not diversify the insurance exposure; using a separate bank can, subject to the same-right-and-capacity rules.

Convenience

Verify the exact digital and branch workflows for opening, adding a nominee, changing maturity instructions and obtaining tax documents. Check the auto-renewal mandate before the maturity date. Canara’s policy states that renewal follows the depositor’s mandate, subject to exceptions, so the instruction on your advice matters.

Fit

Match the product to its job. An emergency reserve needs access and a clear exit route. A known expense with a fixed date may suit a deposit whose maturity aligns with that date. Long-term money can tolerate a longer lock only when the penalty and insurance concentration are acceptable.

Practical comparison scenarios

You need money in about one year

Start with a one-year row at each bank and keep the payout option identical. Then evaluate Canara’s 444-day and 555-day slabs separately rather than treating them as one-year substitutes. If your spending date is before maturity, the longer product may expose you to an early-closure penalty or require borrowing against the FD.

You want regular income

Choose a periodic-payout convention and compare the total scheduled payouts, not the cumulative maturity amount. Confirm payment frequency, the account receiving the payout and the tax documents supplied. A rate comparison that ignores when cash arrives can favor the wrong product for an income need.

You are a senior citizen

Use the senior-citizen row for every bank and the exact tenure. Do not apply a senior uplift from one bank to another bank’s general rate. Recalculate maturity or payouts after entering the correct category and check whether the category must be established at booking.

You already have large balances at one bank

Aggregate all branches and deposits held in the same right and capacity, including accrued interest, before booking another FD there. If the combined amount exceeds the DICGC ceiling, compare whether placing part of the new money at another bank better matches your safety objective. Insurance diversification does not remove the need to compare rates, penalties and service terms at the second bank.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Using an old rate card

Symptom: your quoted rate differs from the bank’s booking screen. Fix: record the effective date and refresh every official card on the day you publish or book.

Mixing payout conventions

Symptom: one row shows a maturity amount while another shows monthly interest. Fix: calculate both on the same cash-flow basis or clearly label the different objectives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring customer category

Symptom: a senior-citizen rate is compared with a general rate. Fix: select the correct category first, then compare the same tenure.

Assuming every FD is breakable

Symptom: an emergency requires cash from a non-callable deposit. Fix: verify callable status before booking and record the loan or overdraft alternative.

Applying today’s rate to an old booking

Symptom: the premature-closure estimate uses the current card. Fix: read the applicable booking-date and actual-period rule in the product terms; ICICI’s stated approach explicitly uses the booking-date rate for the period run, less penalty.

Treating branches as separate insurance limits

Symptom: several branches of one bank are each assumed to have a ₹5 lakh cover. Fix: aggregate branches and deposits by bank and same right and capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Letting auto-renewal happen unintentionally

Symptom: the FD renews for a new term when you needed the funds. Fix: set the maturity mandate at booking and verify it on the deposit advice.

A repeatable decision process

  1. Define the purpose, required access date and maximum acceptable lock-in.
  2. Choose one principal, tenure basis, customer category and payout option for the initial comparison.
  3. Collect the current Canara, SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank rate cards and note each effective date.
  4. Mark callable or non-callable status and copy the premature-closure rule and minimum holding period.
  5. Calculate maturity value or periodic payouts using each bank’s official calculator or disclosure.
  6. Convert the result to an after-tax comparison appropriate to your circumstances.
  7. Check loans or overdrafts, sweep features, nomination, servicing and renewal instructions.
  8. Aggregate your existing balances for DICGC purposes and decide whether concentration at one bank fits your risk plan.
  9. Save the final quote and deposit advice, then review the maturity mandate before the due date.

This process prevents a special-tenure headline rate from hiding a weaker liquidity profile, a different cash-flow pattern or uninsured concentration.
