Compare banks on three connected dimensions: asset quality, capital strength, and deposit funding. Build a peer group with similar size, geography, charter, business model, and loan mix; collect at least three to eight quarters of Call Reports and Uniform Bank Performance Reports (UBPRs); then judge both the level and direction of each metric. A bank is more compelling when credit problems are stable or improving, capital is being generated by recurring earnings, and deposits are broad, durable, and reasonably priced relative to loan growth.
What a useful bank-stock comparison measures
A bank can look attractive on one ratio and fragile on another. Rapid loan growth may lift earnings while weakening underwriting. A high CET1 ratio may reflect a low-risk balance sheet, or it may be offset by concentrated exposures and fast growth in risk-weighted assets. Deposit growth can support expansion, but rate-sensitive or uninsured funding may be costly and unstable.
Use the following three-part framework. Compare each bank with genuinely similar peers and with its own history.
| Dimension | Metrics to collect | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Asset quality | Nonperforming or nonaccrual loans, 30–89-day and 90-plus-day delinquencies, net charge-offs, provision expense, allowance or credit-loss reserves, and loan concentrations | Are problem loans rising? Are reserves keeping pace? Where is exposure concentrated by loan type and geography? |
| Capital | CET1 risk-based capital, Tier 1 leverage, tangible common equity, retained earnings, dividends, repurchases, and risk-weighted assets | Is the buffer being built by earnings? Is rapid growth consuming it? Does the asset mix make the ratio less informative? |
| Deposits | Total and core deposits, insured and uninsured balances, interest-bearing share, deposit pricing or beta, brokered deposits, funding cost, and the deposit-to-loan trend | Is growth broad and sticky, or expensive and concentrated? Is funding keeping pace with loans without excessive rate pressure? |
Build a peer group before looking at rankings
Start with a comparison set that reflects how the banks actually make money. Record each institution’s approximate asset size, charter, primary states or regions, commercial versus consumer orientation, and major loan categories. A nationwide diversified lender should not be judged against a locally concentrated commercial-real-estate bank simply because their market capitalizations are similar.

Match business model and loan mix
Separate banks whose books are dominated by commercial and industrial loans, commercial real estate, residential mortgages, credit cards, auto loans, energy lending, or other specialized segments. Credit cycles affect those portfolios differently. Concentration is not automatically bad; it means the relevant stress indicators and peer comparisons must be specific to that exposure.
Match geography and reporting scope
Use peers operating in similar economies and regulatory environments. A regional downturn, property market, or employer base can move delinquency and deposit trends before national averages change. Confirm that every ratio uses the same reporting period and a comparable denominator, such as average loans versus period-end loans.
Use enough history to see a direction
Pull the latest quarter and at least three earlier quarters; eight quarters is preferable when the data are available. A single quarter can be distorted by a sale, acquisition, seasonal deposit movement, a large charge-off, or a change in loan classification. Trend lines reveal whether an outlier is reversing or becoming structural.
Collect regulatory data consistently
Insured banks file Call Reports every quarter. FFIEC states: “Every national bank, state member bank, and insured nonmember bank is required by its primary federal regulator to file a Call Report as of the close of business on the last day of each calendar quarter (the report date).” The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Bank Data Guide points users to Call Reports, UBPRs, institution-comparison reports, deposit-market-share reports, and deposit-growth reports. FFIEC describes UBPRs as organized around earnings, balance sheet, asset quality, liquidity, capital, and growth management.
- Select the peer set. Write down the asset-size range, charter type, geography, business model, and loan concentrations that make an institution comparable.
- Download the latest Call Report and UBPR. Add at least three and preferably eight previous quarters for the same institutions.
- Record definitions before calculating changes. Note whether a figure is an average or period-end amount, risk-weighted or unweighted, annualized, and reported for the consolidated bank or a subsidiary.
- Build a time series. Calculate quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year changes for credit, capital, and deposits. Keep the original reported values beside your calculations.
- Reconcile with company filings. Check the bank’s 10-K, 10-Q, earnings release, and investor presentation for explanations of acquisitions, loan sales, securities moves, capital actions, or reclassifications.
- Investigate outliers. Break unusual movements into loan segment, geography, deposit type, securities portfolio, and funding source rather than accepting a headline ratio.
- Refresh after each reporting cycle. Industry profiles and regulatory data are dated snapshots; update the workbook when new Call Reports and quarterly profiles arrive.
Analyze asset quality as a dashboard
Asset quality is a trend-and-concentration question, not a single nonperforming-loan percentage. Begin with the level of problem assets, then test whether early delinquencies, charge-offs, provisions, and reserves confirm or contradict that signal.
Nonperforming and nonaccrual loans
Track nonperforming or nonaccrual loans as a percentage of loans and compare the result with the peer median and the bank’s own prior quarters. A low current ratio is useful only if it is not being achieved by unusually rapid growth, aggressive restructurings, or delayed recognition. Review the composition: commercial real estate, commercial and industrial, residential, credit-card, auto, energy, and other categories can have very different loss behavior.

Past-due loans provide an earlier warning
Separate loans that are 30–89 days past due from those 90 days or more past due. Rising early-stage delinquencies can precede nonaccrual inflows. If both buckets rise across several quarters, ask whether underwriting, borrower cash flow, or a regional economy is deteriorating. If only one portfolio shows the increase, focus the investigation there instead of treating the whole bank as uniform.

Net charge-offs measure losses recognized after recoveries; provision expense is the earnings charge used to build or release reserves. Compare both with loan growth and with changes in nonperforming loans. Provisions that rise ahead of charge-offs can indicate prudent preparation, while provisions that lag a rapid increase in problem loans may leave the allowance playing catch-up. A provision release deserves an explanation when delinquencies or concentrations are worsening.
Test allowance coverage
Review the allowance or credit-loss reserve relative to nonperforming loans and to total loans, using the same definitions for every peer. Falling coverage while problem loans rise is a warning. Stable coverage can still be inadequate if the portfolio has shifted toward a riskier segment, so pair the ratio with segment-level exposure and recent charge-off experience.
Map concentrations and geography
List the largest loan concentrations and the markets behind them. Commercial real estate, consumer lending, and energy are examples of exposures that can dominate results during a downturn. Compare concentration changes with capital and reserve levels: a bank adding exposure while its loss-absorption capacity is shrinking deserves closer scrutiny than one with the same headline nonperforming ratio and a more diversified book.
Asset-quality review table
| Signal | More favorable pattern | Follow-up question |
|---|---|---|
| Nonperforming or nonaccrual loans | Flat or declining ratio across comparable quarters | Is the improvement broad, or is one segment masking deterioration elsewhere? |
| 30–89-day delinquencies | Stable or declining early-stage past dues | Are recent originations performing differently from older vintages? |
| 90-plus-day delinquencies | No sustained increase | Are accounts migrating into nonaccrual status? |
| Net charge-offs | Consistent with peer and portfolio history | Do losses reflect one event or a widening trend? |
| Provision expense | Tracks modeled risk and portfolio growth | Are reserves being built before losses, or released despite worsening indicators? |
| Allowance coverage | Stable or improving while problem loans are controlled | Has the loan mix become more concentrated or risky? |
Evaluate capital beyond the CET1 headline
CET1 risk-based capital is the starting point because it measures common equity against risk-weighted assets. Pair it with the Tier 1 leverage ratio, which is not risk-weighted, and with tangible common equity. Then determine how the buffer is being generated and how quickly asset growth is consuming it.

CET1 and Tier 1 leverage
Compare CET1 and Tier 1 leverage with like-for-like peers and across quarters. A higher ratio generally provides more loss-absorption capacity, but risk weighting means equal CET1 ratios do not imply equal exposure to concentration, duration, or model risk. The leverage ratio is a useful cross-check because it does not assign the same risk-weighting benefit to a low-risk asset mix.

Tangible common equity and retained earnings
Inspect tangible common equity and the change in retained earnings. Capital built through recurring earnings is different from a one-time equity issuance or temporary balance-sheet reduction. Read the reconciliation for accumulated other comprehensive income and other items that can affect tangible equity, especially when securities portfolios or interest rates move sharply.
Distributions and risk-weighted-asset growth
Record dividends and share repurchases beside earnings and risk-weighted-asset growth. A bank that distributes most of its earnings while expanding risk-weighted assets may have less flexibility when losses rise. Conversely, retaining earnings during uncertainty can strengthen the buffer even if the current CET1 ratio is not the highest in the peer set.
2025–2026 industry context
| Population and date | Aggregate CET1 ratio | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Large banks, year-end 2025 | About 13% | System context, not a target or safety guarantee for an individual bank |
| Small banks, year-end 2025 | About 13% | Use only as a broad reference for the reported population |
| Large banks, end of first quarter 2026 | About 12% | A dated snapshot that should be refreshed with later quarters |
| All insured institutions, full-year 2025 FDIC profile | 14.03% | Different population and reporting basis; do not rank a bank against it without matching definitions |
These figures come from 2026 publications by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and the FDIC. They describe aggregates, not the capital position or investment merits of any specific institution.

Determine whether deposit growth is durable
Deposit growth supports lending only when the funding is dependable and economically sensible. Measure both year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter change, then inspect what kind of deposits produced it.
Separate core, insured, uninsured, and brokered funding
Broad relationship deposits from households and operating businesses are typically a different risk from a few large uninsured balances or brokered deposits. Compare total deposits with core deposits, insured and uninsured shares, and any disclosed brokered component. A concentration of uninsured accounts can create faster outflows when confidence or market rates change.
Measure the price of growth
Track the interest-bearing share, deposit rates, interest expense, and deposit beta—the sensitivity of rates paid to changes in market rates. Volume can rise while profitability falls if the bank pays unusually high rates to retain or attract funds. Compare funding cost with net interest income and with peers, not just with the prior quarter.

Compare deposits with loans and liquidity
Set deposit growth beside loan growth. Growth that keeps pace with lending can reduce reliance on wholesale funding; loans expanding much faster than deposits may require securities sales, borrowings, or aggressive pricing. Review liquidity and wholesale-funding disclosures at the same time. The Federal Reserve’s current system description says, “Loan growth was driven by commercial and industrial lending and funded by deposit growth.” That is a system-level observation, not evidence that any particular bank has a safe funding profile.

Examine whether growth is spread across customer types, regions, and account sizes. A one-quarter surge from a small number of rate-sensitive accounts is less durable than steady growth in operating and retail relationships. Check the next quarter for retention and compare deposit pricing with the amount of runoff avoided.

| Asset quality | Problem-loan trend, delinquency buckets, charge-offs, provisions, allowance coverage, and top concentrations | Would a moderate downturn expose a reserve or concentration weakness? |
| Capital | CET1, Tier 1 leverage, tangible common equity, retained earnings, payouts, and risk-weighted-asset growth | Can recurring earnings rebuild capital after plausible losses? |
| Deposits | Growth rates, core and uninsured mix, pricing, beta, brokered share, and deposit-to-loan movement | Would funding remain available without uneconomic rates or wholesale dependence? |

Prefer a bank whose signals reinforce one another: stable credit metrics, capital generated internally, and deposit growth that is broad and reasonably priced. Treat conflicting signals as a reason to investigate, not as an automatic pass or fail. For example, strong deposits can coexist with deteriorating commercial real estate, while excellent CET1 can coexist with expensive funding and weak returns.
Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Ranking one ratio
Mistake: choosing the bank with the lowest nonperforming-loan ratio or highest CET1 without context. Correction: pair every headline ratio with its trend, denominator, loan mix, and peer definition.
Mixing incompatible populations
Mistake: comparing a large-bank aggregate with an individual community bank or combining period-end and average-loan ratios. Correction: label the population, date, and calculation basis beside every number.

Confusing provisions with realized losses
Mistake: treating a high provision as proof that current losses are already high, or a low provision as proof of safety. Correction: read provision expense with charge-offs, delinquency migration, reserve coverage, and management’s credit assumptions.
Calling all deposits equal
Mistake: treating a deposit increase as automatically healthy. Correction: separate insured, uninsured, core, interest-bearing, and brokered balances and include the rate paid for the growth.
Ignoring fast balance-sheet expansion
Mistake: reading a rising CET1 ratio as proof that growth is risk-free. Correction: inspect risk-weighted-asset growth, retained earnings, distributions, and the assets being added.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUsing stale data

A repeatable checklist for comparing two or more banks
- Define the peer set by size, charter, geography, business model, and loan mix.
- Collect the latest Call Report and UBPR plus three to eight earlier quarters.
- Verify definitions, denominators, annualization, and reporting scope.
- Chart nonperforming loans, both delinquency buckets, charge-offs, provisions, and allowance coverage.
- Map concentrations by loan type and geography, then compare them with reserves and capital.
- Review CET1, Tier 1 leverage, tangible common equity, retained earnings, payouts, and risk-weighted-asset growth.
- Calculate deposit growth year over year and quarter over quarter and split the result by core, insured, uninsured, interest-bearing, and brokered funding where disclosed.
- Compare deposit pricing and funding cost with loan growth and liquidity needs.
- Reconcile regulatory data with the 10-K, 10-Q, and earnings presentation.
- Write the specific condition that would invalidate your conclusion, such as a rise in 90-plus-day delinquencies, a reserve shortfall, rapid uninsured outflows, or capital consumed by asset growth.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
This process produces a disciplined relative view of credit risk, loss-absorption capacity, and funding durability. It does not set a universal “good” CET1 threshold, predict the stock price, or replace review of valuation, earnings quality, liquidity stress, interest-rate sensitivity, governance, and regulatory developments. System averages such as the 2025 and first-quarter 2026 CET1 figures are context only. Investment conclusions require bank-specific filings and a peer analysis built on consistent definitions.
