The “best” fixed deposit (FD) is not simply the one showing the highest annual rate. Compare offers only after matching the principal, tenure, payout type, depositor category and early-withdrawal option. Then check the bank’s rate-card date, calculate the amount you would actually receive if you close early, and test how much of the balance falls within Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) cover.
Rates and penalty schedules change, so record the figures from each bank’s current official schedule immediately before booking. DICGC protection is separate from the interest comparison: eligible deposits are insured up to ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank, including principal and accrued interest.
Start with an apples-to-apples comparison
A bank can advertise an “up to” rate that applies only to a particular tenor, senior-citizen category, deposit size or promotional period. A meaningful comparison fixes the variables that change the outcome.
Principal and tenure
Use the same principal for every quote and compare the same number of days or months. A 400-day deposit is not directly comparable with a one-year deposit, even when both advertisements show a similar annual percentage. Record the exact start and maturity dates if the bank calculates interest by days.

Payout type
Separate cumulative (reinvestment) deposits from regular-payout deposits. A cumulative FD normally pays at maturity, while a monthly, quarterly or other regular-payout option distributes interest during the term. The quoted annual rate may be identical, but the cash-flow pattern and maturity amount differ. Compare effective yield and total rupees received, not just the headline percentage.
Depositor category
Note whether the quote is for a regular customer, senior citizen or another eligible category. A senior-citizen uplift must not be used to rank an offer for a depositor who does not qualify. Also record whether the rate applies to a specific deposit-size band.
Liquidity option
Mark whether premature withdrawal is permitted, restricted or unavailable. RBI rules allow banks to set rates by tenor, deposit size and withdrawal option. For domestic individual term deposits of ₹1 crore or less, an October 2023 amendment requires a premature-withdrawal facility; the bank’s current product terms still determine how that facility works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRate-card date
Write down the date and version of the schedule you used. A rate is not a permanent feature of the account: the bank can revise rates for new bookings, while an already booked FD generally follows its contract. Recheck the schedule immediately before submitting the deposit.
How to compare FD interest rates
Use the bank’s official schedule
Start with the bank’s current rate card and product disclosure, not an aggregator’s rounded headline. Capture the tenor, minimum and maximum amount, customer category, payout mode and whether the quote is promotional. An “up to” rate should be treated as a lead to investigate, not as the rate you will necessarily receive.
Normalize the quote
For each offer, put the following on one worksheet:
- Principal and exact tenure.
- Annual quoted rate and, where shown, effective yield.
- Cumulative or regular-interest payout.
- Regular-customer or senior-citizen category.
- Callable or non-callable status.
- Rate-card date and booking channel.
- Estimated maturity value or total scheduled payouts.
If two deposits have different compounding frequencies, compare the total rupee return over the same term. Do not compare a cumulative maturity value with a regular-payout rate without adding all scheduled interest payments.

Recognize special-rate traps
- Promotional tenors: a bank may quote a high rate for a narrow period such as a special number of days. Confirm the booking deadline and whether renewal uses the normal card.
- Non-callable deposits: a higher rate may be offered in exchange for giving up early exit. Check the threshold above which the feature applies and whether any exception exists.
- Senior-citizen uplift: record the base rate and the uplift separately so the comparison remains valid if the depositor category changes.
- Deposit-size bands: the rate for a small retail deposit may differ from the rate for a large deposit. Match the same amount across banks.
There is no universal answer to “which bank has the highest rate” without a specified amount, tenure, customer category, payout type and date. The highest displayed percentage can produce less usable return if it is non-callable, promotional or paired with an inconvenient payout schedule.

What happens when you break an FD early?
The RBI framework
RBI states that banks set their own penal rate. On premature closure, the bank pays the rate applicable to the amount and period actually held, rather than the contracted maturity rate. If the minimum period specified by the bank has not been completed, no interest is payable.
A practical calculation
Ask the bank for a premature-closure quote before authorizing the withdrawal. The calculation normally has three stages:
- Identify the amount and the exact period the money remained in the FD.
- Recalculate interest using the rate applicable to that shorter period and amount under the bank’s schedule.
- Apply the stated premature-withdrawal penalty and reconcile that result with any interest already credited or paid.
The amount you receive is therefore not simply principal plus the original maturity interest. A shorter-tenor rate can be lower, and the penalty can reduce it further. The bank’s disclosure should state the formula or the applicable reduction.

Illustrative calculation
Suppose a hypothetical ₹2,00,000 cumulative FD was booked for two years at 7.00% but is closed after nine months. If the bank’s schedule assigns 5.50% to the nine-month period and imposes a 1-percentage-point premature-closure reduction, the bank would recalculate at 4.50% for the actual holding period, subject to its compounding and day-count rules. This is only an illustration; use the figures in the specific bank’s current schedule.
Minimum holding period
Some products specify a minimum period before any interest is payable. Closing before that point can return only the principal, or principal adjusted according to the product’s stated terms. Confirm the minimum before treating an FD as an emergency fund.
Partial withdrawal, sweep-in and overdraft features
“Premature withdrawal” is not the only way to access cash. Check whether the product permits:
- Partial withdrawal: only part of the principal is broken, while the remainder continues under the bank’s rules.
- Sweep-in or linked savings access: a specified amount may be transferred automatically when the linked account falls short.
- Loan or overdraft against the FD: the deposit remains in place, but borrowing costs and limits apply.
These alternatives can have different rates, fees and documentation from a full closure. Do not assume that a sweep-in or loan has the same cost as breaking the deposit.

Non-callable clauses
A non-callable FD can prevent ordinary premature closure. Before selecting one for a higher rate, verify the threshold, permitted exceptions and the process for financial emergencies. RBI’s FAQ says banks should disclose in advance any policy that disallows premature withdrawal.

How DICGC insurance protects an FD
The ₹5,00,000 limit
DICGC covers eligible fixed deposits and other covered deposits up to ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank, including principal and accrued interest. The ceiling is the combined insured amount, not ₹5,00,000 of principal plus unlimited interest.
Branches of one bank are aggregated
Deposits held at different branches of the same bank are added together when they belong to the same depositor in the same right and capacity. Opening several branch-level FDs therefore does not create several insurance limits.
Different banks receive separate limits
Deposits at separate banks are assessed separately for DICGC purposes, provided each institution is covered and the products are eligible. Splitting a balance among banks can therefore keep more of the overall principal and accrued interest within insurance limits, subject to each bank’s terms and status.

DICGC treatment can differ when deposits are held in genuinely different legal capacities. An individual account and a qualifying joint or trustee capacity may be treated separately under the applicable rules. The names, order of names and account mandate should match the intended capacity; changing the label casually does not guarantee a separate limit.
What DICGC excludes
The corporation excludes foreign-government deposits, Central or State Government deposits, inter-bank deposits, deposits received outside India and specifically exempted categories. Confirm that the institution and the exact product are eligible rather than assuming every balance called a deposit is insured.
Who pays the premium?
The bank bears the DICGC insurance premium. It is not an additional charge deducted from the depositor’s principal or interest.
Calculate the exposed amount
For each bank, add principal and accrued interest across all branches in the same capacity. Subtract the DICGC ceiling from that combined balance. The remainder is the amount exposed to the bank’s failure, even though it may still be contractually payable under ordinary circumstances.

When splitting FDs across banks makes sense
Protect balances above the insurance ceiling
If the combined balance at one bank will exceed the insured limit, consider placing portions with separately insured banks after checking each institution’s eligibility and terms. Count accrued interest when deciding how much headroom remains; a principal that begins below the ceiling can move above it as interest accumulates.
Match each bank’s conditions
Distributing money does not make every offer equivalent. Compare the same tenure, payout type and withdrawal rights at each bank. Check minimum deposit amounts, online-closure procedures, renewal defaults and whether a higher rate requires a non-callable product.

Multiple branches, different mobile apps or different FD numbers at one bank do not create separate DICGC limits when the deposits are in the same right and capacity. Verify the legal institution behind a brand or branch network before counting it as a separate bank.
Keep an account-level inventory
Maintain a list of bank, branch, deposit number, principal, accrued interest, maturity date, nominee and insurance calculation. Update it whenever an FD renews or interest is paid. This prevents accidental concentration and makes a claim or estate process easier.

- Define the goal: decide how much must remain liquid, the target maturity date and whether you need monthly income or a maturity lump sum.
- Fix the comparison inputs: use the same principal, tenure, payout type and depositor category for every quote.
- Collect dated documents: save the rate card, premature-withdrawal policy, product disclosure and DICGC eligibility information.
- Normalize returns: compare total rupees received and effective yield, not a headline “up to” rate.
- Model an early exit: obtain the shorter-period rate, penalty and minimum holding period; calculate the net amount for a realistic emergency date.
- Check liquidity substitutes: compare partial withdrawal, sweep-in and loan-against-FD terms where available.
- Map insurance: aggregate all same-capacity deposits at each bank, including accrued interest, and identify the uninsured portion.
- Review operations: set renewal instructions, nomination and maturity-payment details; verify tax and TDS treatment in the current bank documentation.
- Recheck immediately before payment: confirm that the rate and penalty schedule have not changed since you made the comparison.
- Save the confirmation: retain the receipt showing principal, rate, tenure, payout mode, maturity value and closure rules.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing the largest number in an advertisement
Problem: the number may apply only to a senior-citizen, promotional or non-callable deposit.
Correction: verify category, tenor, amount, payout and booking date in the official schedule.
Comparing unlike payout modes
Problem: a cumulative maturity value is compared with a regular-payout annual rate.
Correction: total every scheduled payment over the same period and compare the resulting cash flow.
Assuming the contracted rate survives early closure
Problem: the depositor budgets using the original maturity rate.
Correction: use the rate for the amount and period actually held, then apply the bank’s penalty.

Treating branches as separate insurance
Problem: several branch FDs are assumed to have separate DICGC limits.
Correction: aggregate same-bank deposits held in the same right and capacity.
Ignoring accrued interest in insurance planning
Problem: principal is kept at the ceiling, but interest pushes the combined balance above it.
Correction: leave a margin or distribute deposits so principal plus accrued interest remains within the intended insured amount.
Failing to check non-callable status
Problem: a higher-rate FD cannot be broken when cash is needed.
Correction: confirm the non-callable threshold and exceptions before booking, and keep emergency funds outside the locked amount.
How to choose among otherwise similar offers
For a known future expense
Prioritize a maturity date that matches the expense, then compare cumulative maturity values and renewal instructions. A slightly lower rate can be preferable if it avoids an early-closure penalty.
For regular income
Compare the payment frequency, net scheduled cash flow and what happens if the deposit is closed early. Keep enough liquid money outside the FD so monthly spending does not force a premature closure.
For an emergency reserve
Give liquidity more weight than a promotional rate. Examine minimum holding periods, partial access, sweep-in and loan-against-FD terms before selecting a product.
For a large balance
Map the DICGC exposure first, then distribute among eligible banks if appropriate. Within each bank, avoid accidentally combining deposits in the same capacity beyond the insured ceiling.
