To compare bank earnings fairly, line up the same fiscal period, geography, currency, and type of bank; show absolute scale before ratios; then test net interest income, recurring fees, expenses, credit costs, capital, funding, and valuation. A higher ROE alone does not prove that one bank is more profitable: it can reflect a smaller equity base, temporary gains, or greater risk. The useful question is which bank produces stronger, repeatable returns for the risks and capital it uses.
Set a fair comparison frame before reading the numbers
Bank results are only comparable when the context is controlled. Start by writing down the period and scope for every figure you collect.
- Use the same period. Compare the same fiscal quarter or full year. A seasonally strong quarter at one bank should not be matched with a weak seasonal quarter at another.
- Keep geography and currency consistent. Convert figures only with a documented method, and distinguish currency movements from operational growth.
- Build a genuine peer group. Similar asset size and business model matter. A retail deposit bank, a credit-card specialist, a custody bank, and a trading-heavy universal bank earn money in different ways.
- Record structural events. Note mergers, divestitures, branch sales, major portfolio purchases, and unusual accounting changes. A reported growth rate can be mostly an acquisition effect.
- Separate reported and adjusted data. Keep GAAP or statutory results beside management’s adjusted figures. Never compare one bank’s adjusted ROE with another bank’s unadjusted ROE without reconciling the adjustments.
Regulatory filings and earnings releases provide bank-level detail. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Quarterly Banking Profile supplies earnings, loan and deposit activity, asset-quality, and peer-comparison data. Use those sources to verify definitions, not just the headline earnings number.
Start with scale, then calculate meaningful growth
Absolute dollars tell you how large a bank’s earnings engine is; ratios tell you how efficiently it uses that engine. Capture the following before making a profitability judgment:

| Measure | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Net income | Reported total for the matching period | Shows total profit, but can move sharply with provisions, securities gains, taxes, or one-time items. |
| Revenue | Net interest income plus noninterest income | Shows the size of the revenue base supporting expenses and credit losses. |
| Total assets | Period-end and, where available, average assets | Provides scale for ROAA and helps reveal whether earnings grew faster than the balance sheet. |
| Loans | Period-end loans and year-over-year or sequential change | Indicates lending growth, but growth quality depends on pricing, underwriting, and portfolio mix. |
| Deposits | Total deposits and change over the same interval | Shows franchise funding momentum and whether loan growth is supported by core funding. |
Growth is meaningful only after you identify the starting base and acquisition effects. A small bank can post a larger percentage increase from a low base, while a large bank can add more dollars with a smaller percentage. Explain both the percentage and the dollar change.
Quarterly ratios may be presented on an annualized basis. Label that convention in your worksheet and do not mix an annualized quarterly figure with a full-year figure as though they were identical.
Compare the interest business: NIM, yields, and funding costs
The Federal Reserve defines net interest margin as “net interest income divided by average earning assets.” NIM is the central measure of how profitably a bank transforms interest-earning assets and funding into spread income, but it is not a complete explanation by itself.
Read NIM together with the components that create it:
- Loan yield: Higher yields may reflect better pricing, a riskier portfolio, or a greater share of variable-rate loans.
- Deposit cost: Rising interest paid to depositors can compress the spread even when loan yields are also rising.
- Earning-asset mix: Securities, cash, residential mortgages, commercial loans, cards, and other assets carry different yields and risks.
- Funding mix: Core checking and savings deposits generally behave differently from brokered deposits, purchased funds, and other wholesale sources.
- Hedging and interest-rate sensitivity: Derivatives and repricing schedules can make two banks with similar reported NIM respond differently to rate changes.
| NIM question | Evidence to inspect | Reason for the difference |
|---|---|---|
| Is the margin expanding or contracting? | Current NIM, prior period, and same period in the prior year | Separates a durable trend from a one-quarter movement. |
| Are assets repricing? | Loan yields, variable-rate exposure, securities mix, and average earning assets | Shows whether asset income can keep pace with funding costs. |
| Are deposits repricing? | Deposit balances, interest expense, and deposit beta disclosures where provided | Reveals how much of a rate increase the bank is passing through to customers. |
| Is funding becoming fragile? | Core deposits, uninsured deposits, brokered deposits, and wholesale funding | Growth funded by expensive or less stable sources may not improve long-term earnings. |
The Federal Reserve cautions that wholesale funding “can be more costly and less stable than core deposits.” A bank with a wider NIM because it takes on more expensive or flight-prone funding is not automatically the better performer. Compare the margin with deposit retention, liquidity, and the bank’s ability to renew that funding.
Use both ROAA and ROE to judge profitability
The Federal Reserve defines ROE as net income divided by average equity capital, and ROAA as net income divided by average assets. Use the pair rather than choosing whichever number is higher.

What ROAA tells you
ROAA measures profit generated by the asset base. It is useful when banks have different capital structures because it focuses on asset productivity. A stronger ROAA can result from better pricing, lower expenses, a favorable fee mix, or lower credit costs; inspect the components before calling it durable.

What ROE tells you
ROE measures the return earned on common equity. It matters to shareholders, but leverage and capitalization influence it. Two banks can produce the same ROAA while the bank with less equity reports the higher ROE. Temporary trading gains, reserve releases, tax effects, or an unusually low equity base can also lift ROE.
Read the spread between them
Compare each bank’s ROAA and ROE with its equity-to-assets position and capital ratios. A high ROE paired with a thin capital cushion deserves more scrutiny than a similar ROE supported by ample capital. Conversely, a well-capitalized bank may show a lower ROE while generating sound, less leveraged returns.
| Reference point | Period and source | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| About 1.1% aggregate ROAA and 11.2% aggregate ROE | U.S. banks, year-end 2025, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System | Broad system context, not a target or required threshold. |
| 1.24% aggregate ROA and $77.7 billion aggregate net income | U.S. banks, fourth quarter 2025, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation | Quarterly industry context; do not treat it as a forecast for an individual bank. |
| 14% aggregate ROE for large banks | First quarter 2026, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System | Large-bank reference for that quarter; business mix and capital levels still differ by institution. |
These aggregate figures are reference points, not performance promises. A bank should be compared with its own peer set and with its prior-cycle results.
Separate recurring revenue from volatile revenue
Break revenue into net interest income and noninterest income before deciding which bank has the stronger earnings stream. Within noninterest income, identify fees, trading, investment banking, wealth management, payments, servicing, and other disclosed categories.

- Trading and investment-banking income can be highly profitable in an active market and much lower in a quiet one.
- Wealth-management and asset-based fees depend on client assets and market levels as well as new business.
- One-time gains from securities sales, legal settlements, revaluations, or acquisitions should be isolated from the run rate.
Compare the mix, not merely the total. A bank with lower total revenue but a larger recurring fee base may be more resilient than a bank whose headline growth came from trading. State whether each figure is reported or adjusted and explain every adjustment that affects the comparison.

Compare operating costs only after aligning definitions
Operating expenses and the efficiency ratio show how much revenue a bank consumes to run its business. The ratio is useful only when both banks calculate it on comparable bases.
- Check the numerator: include or exclude restructuring, merger, litigation, and other unusual costs consistently.
- Check the denominator: determine whether it uses reported revenue, taxable-equivalent revenue, or another management-defined measure.
- Check the period: a quarterly ratio can be distorted by seasonal compensation, annual assessments, or integration costs.
- Explain business mix: branch-heavy retail operations, technology spending, custody services, and trading platforms have different cost structures.
A lower efficiency ratio is not automatically superior if it comes from underinvestment, temporary cost cuts, or a revenue surge that cannot recur. Pair the ratio with service capacity, technology investment, and the durability of the revenue producing it.
Test credit quality before trusting current earnings
Credit costs can turn a superficially strong quarter into a weak underlying result. Review nonperforming and delinquent loans, net charge-offs, provision expense, allowance coverage, and portfolio concentrations together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Credit measure | What it reveals | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Delinquency and nonperforming loans | Borrowers missing payments or no longer accruing interest | Are problems broadening across products, regions, or industries? |
| Net charge-offs | Loans removed as losses after recoveries | Are realized losses rising faster than the bank’s reserves? |
| Provision expense | Current-period expense for expected credit losses | Is the provision reflecting new risk, or did a prior reserve release flatter earnings? |
| Allowance coverage | Reserves relative to problem loans or total loans | Does reserve coverage fit the portfolio’s risk and collateral? |
| Concentration | Exposure to commercial real estate, consumer cards, leveraged lending, or a single region | Could one sector create losses that the aggregate ratio hides? |
At year-end 2025, the Federal Reserve reported total loan delinquency of 1.6%, below a long-run historical average of about 3%. Its definition includes loans 30 or more days past due or in nonaccrual status. This is a system measure, not evidence that every bank has the same credit profile.
A low provision can flatter current net income when management expects losses later. Compare provision expense with delinquency trends, charge-offs, reserve coverage, underwriting standards, and management’s forward outlook rather than treating a small provision as inherently good news.
Check capital, liquidity, and funding resilience
Capital and liquidity determine how much risk a bank can absorb and whether it can continue lending during stress. Review CET1, Tier 1 leverage, tangible common equity, liquidity resources, uninsured deposits, and wholesale funding.

- CET1: A risk-weighted capital measure that indicates the highest-quality capital available to absorb losses.
- Tier 1 leverage: A non-risk-weighted view that limits how much assets a bank can carry relative to core capital.
- Tangible common equity: Helps isolate common equity after intangible assets and related adjustments; use each bank’s stated definition.
- Liquidity: Compare cash, high-quality liquid assets, borrowing capacity, and expected outflows.
- Uninsured deposits: A larger share can increase sensitivity to confidence and interest-rate changes, especially when concentrated.
- Wholesale funding: Examine maturities, pricing, collateral requirements, and renewal dependence, not only the balance.
| Reference point | Period and source | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About 13% aggregate CET1 for large and small banks | Year-end 2025, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System | System aggregate; individual-bank ratios can differ materially. |

| About 12% aggregate CET1 for large banks | First quarter 2026, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System | Quarter-specific aggregate reference. |
Use each bank’s filing for the decision. A system average cannot replace the bank’s own capital, liquidity, deposit, and funding disclosures.

Price-to-earnings and price-to-tangible-book ratios are useful only after you decide whether earnings are repeatable and capital is adequate. A low P/E can signal undervalued recurring profits, or it can reflect expected credit losses and a shrinking earnings base. A high price-to-tangible-book ratio can reflect a durable franchise, stronger returns, or excessive optimism.
Market indicators add a forward-looking check. The Federal Reserve describes market leverage ratios and credit-default-swap spreads as forward-looking indicators: higher market leverage generally signals greater market confidence, while wider CDS spreads signal lower confidence. Treat these signals as market expectations, not proof of future results, and interpret them alongside balance-sheet data.

A step-by-step bank earnings comparison workflow
- Define the peer set. Choose banks with similar geography, asset scale, customer base, and business model.
- Lock the period and currency. Use the same quarter or year and document any conversion.
- Build the scale view. Enter net income, revenue, assets, loans, and deposits in dollars.
- Calculate comparable growth. Show sequential and year-over-year changes, then remove or explain merger and divestiture effects.
- Decompose NIM. Review average earning assets, loan yields, deposit costs, securities, and funding sources.
- Score profitability. Compare ROAA and ROE together, then test the equity base and any unusual gains.
- Classify revenue. Mark recurring fees separately from trading, investment banking, market-sensitive wealth fees, and one-time items.
- Align expenses. Reconcile efficiency-ratio numerators, denominators, taxable-equivalent adjustments, and management exclusions.
- Stress credit quality. Review delinquencies, nonaccruals, charge-offs, provisions, allowance coverage, and concentrations.
- Check resilience. Compare CET1, leverage, tangible equity, liquidity, uninsured deposits, and wholesale-funding dependence.
- Apply valuation last. Use P/E, price-to-tangible-book, market leverage, and CDS spreads only after the operating analysis.
- Write the verdict in risk-adjusted terms. State which bank has stronger recurring earnings, which has better balance-sheet resilience, and what could change the conclusion.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling the highest net income the most profitable bank
Total income mainly reflects size. Correct it by comparing ROAA, ROE, margins, costs, and credit performance after showing the absolute dollars.
Treating a higher ROE as automatically better
Check capitalization, leverage, one-time gains, and ROAA. A lower equity base can mechanically increase ROE.

Comparing NIM without funding context
Inspect deposit costs, earning-asset mix, and wholesale funding. A wide margin built on unstable funding may carry more risk.
Rewarding loan growth without checking underwriting
Match growth with delinquencies, charge-offs, provisions, allowance coverage, and concentrations. Fast growth can precede future losses.
Mixing GAAP and adjusted figures
Keep reported and adjusted results separate and reconcile every exclusion before ranking banks.
Recommended Free Tools
Using a system average as a target
Federal Reserve and FDIC aggregates provide context. They are not forecasts, guarantees, or minimum performance requirements for an individual bank.
Ignoring the denominator in an efficiency ratio
Verify reported versus taxable-equivalent revenue and the treatment of unusual costs before comparing percentages.
Letting valuation lead the analysis
Analyze earnings quality, capital, liquidity, and credit risk first. A cheap multiple may be discounting genuine problems.
How to decide which bank is actually more profitable
Call one bank more profitable only when its advantage survives several tests: stronger or more stable ROAA, an ROE supported by adequate capital, a NIM supported by durable funding, recurring rather than market-dependent revenue, controlled expenses on aligned definitions, and credit costs consistent with portfolio risk. Then ask whether the valuation already reflects that quality.
