The reliable way to compare Asian technology stocks is to normalize the companies before you rank them. Group genuinely similar businesses, align fiscal periods and accounting, convert ADRs and currencies correctly, separate operating performance from foreign-exchange effects, then score valuation, balance-sheet strength, ownership, liquidity, governance and country risk together. A single P/E ranking across a foundry, an online marketplace and a telecom-equipment maker can be materially misleading.

Why a cross-market comparison needs more than a stock screener

Listings in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai and other Asian markets use different currencies, reporting calendars, share units and market rules. The same economic company can also appear as an ordinary share, an ADR or a GDR, with each receipt representing a different number of home-market shares. A screen that ignores those mechanics may compare different earnings periods, count the same equity twice, or show a cheap multiple that disappears after conversion.

Start with a common decision: which company offers the best risk-adjusted exposure to a defined technology theme at the current price? That question requires an operating comparison and an investability comparison. Operating quality covers growth, margins, cash generation and competitive position. Investability covers free float, foreign-ownership limits, trading liquidity, governance, regulation, currency convertibility and the cost of entering or exiting.

1. Define a defensible peer group

Classify each issuer by its primary economic engine before collecting ratios. Technology labels are too broad to be useful on their own.

Business group Typical revenue engine Useful operating questions Valuation starting points
Semiconductors and foundries Wafer production, chip design, packaging or testing What are utilization, yields, inventory turns, design wins, capex intensity and cycle exposure? P/E or EV/EBITDA through a cycle; EV/sales when profits are temporarily depressed
Hardware and devices Unit sales, components, systems or contract manufacturing How durable are volumes, average selling prices, bill-of-materials costs and customer concentration? P/E, EV/EBITDA and free-cash-flow yield with working-capital analysis
Software and cloud Subscriptions, usage or licenses Are revenue and gross profit recurring? What are retention, net expansion, sales efficiency and R&D intensity? EV/sales for earlier-stage firms; EV/EBITDA or P/E once profits are mature
Internet platforms and marketplaces Advertising, commissions, payments or transaction fees What are active users, take rate, contribution margin, customer concentration and regulatory constraints? P/E, EV/EBITDA or price/sales, depending on profitability and capital intensity
E-commerce and fintech Product margin, marketplace fees, lending, payments or financial services How do credit losses, fulfillment costs, incentives, funding and regulation affect cash flow? Separate operating valuation from balance-sheet or loan-book risk
Telecom equipment Network hardware, software and services How concentrated are customers, and how exposed is demand to carrier capex, export controls and national-security rules? EV/EBITDA and free-cash-flow yield, adjusted for project cycles

Keep peers with similar economics together. A profitable, asset-light software vendor can deserve a different margin and reinvestment profile from a capital-intensive chip manufacturer even if both are called technology companies. If a company has two major businesses, value each segment separately where disclosures permit and explain the residual conglomerate discount.

2. Normalize the reported numbers

Align fiscal periods

Record the fiscal year-end and the exact trailing or forecast period for every issuer. A March year-end and a December year-end can put different parts of a semiconductor cycle into the same “last twelve months” column. Use a common cut-off date, roll each company to the same twelve-month period where data allow, and label estimates separately from reported results.

Choose a currency without hiding the original data

Keep revenue, operating profit, net income and cash flow in the reporting currency first. Add a common-currency view using one stated rate convention, such as the period-average rate for income-statement items and the period-end rate for balance-sheet items. Show both views: local-currency growth reveals management execution, while common-currency growth includes the investor’s translation experience.

Make share counts and corporate actions consistent

  • Use basic or diluted shares consistently. Diluted shares should include in-the-money options, convertibles and other instruments when they affect per-share figures.
  • Adjust historical per-share data for stock splits, reverse splits, rights issues and bonus shares.
  • Record whether the security is an ordinary share, a preferred or non-voting class, an ADR or a GDR.
  • Separate parent-company earnings from amounts attributable to non-controlling (minority) interests.
  • Use net debt that includes relevant leases or restricted cash when your peer definition requires it, and document the policy.
  • Remove one-off gains, restructuring charges, impairments and acquisition costs only when the adjustment is transparent and economically justified. Show reported and adjusted figures side by side.

Read the accounting framework, not just the label

Identify whether each issuer reports under IFRS, a national framework or a modified IFRS framework. The OECD’s Equity markets: Asia Capital Markets Report 2025 notes that adoption and implementation differ materially across Asian jurisdictions, raising cross-border due-diligence costs. Check revenue recognition, lease capitalization, development-cost capitalization, goodwill impairment, financial-instrument classification and segment disclosure. A ratio is comparable only after you understand the accounting choices behind its numerator and denominator.

3. Reconcile ADRs, GDRs and multiple share classes

An American depositary receipt is a depositary security, not automatically one ordinary share. Investor.gov states: “Each ADR represents one or more shares of foreign stock or a fraction of a share.” The deposit agreement specifies the conversion ratio, fees and corporate-action treatment.

Item to verify Why it changes the comparison How to record it
ADR-to-ordinary-share ratio An ADR price represents a different number of home-market shares Write the ratio explicitly, such as 1 ADR = 2 ordinary shares or 1 ADR = 0.25 ordinary share
Depositary and cancellation fees Fees reduce realized return and can create small price differences List the fee schedule and the date it was checked
Voting and dividend rights Non-voting or restricted classes may deserve a different price Identify voting rights, dividend currency and withholding tax
Trading hours and settlement Home and receipt markets can be open at different times Time-stamp prices and note the settlement convention

Use the mechanical reconciliation before interpreting a premium or discount:

Implied ADR price = home-market share price × ADR shares represented ÷ home-currency units per investor currency

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if an ordinary share trades at ¥2,400, one ADR represents two ordinary shares and the exchange rate is ¥150 per US dollar, the mechanical value is ¥2,400 × 2 ÷ 150 = $32 before fees, taxes and market frictions. A quoted ADR at $30 is not automatically a bargain; investigate the timestamp, dividend accrual, conversion costs, foreign-ownership limits and liquidity.

4. Separate operating performance from foreign exchange

Report growth in two layers. Local-currency growth answers whether the business expanded in its own market. Investor-currency growth answers what a foreign shareholder experienced after translation.

  • Transaction exposure: revenues, components, debt or costs denominated in a foreign currency can change operating profit.
  • Translation exposure: converting a subsidiary’s results into the parent’s reporting currency changes reported revenue, profit and equity without changing local operations.
  • Economic exposure: exchange rates can alter customers’ purchasing power, competitor pricing and supply-chain economics over time.
  • Convertibility and repatriation: restrictions, capital controls or delayed dividend remittance can make a reported profit less accessible to an overseas investor.
  • Hedging: disclose whether derivatives or natural hedges offset exposure, for how long and at what cost; a hedge can reduce volatility without eliminating long-term currency risk.

Use a bridge such as common-currency growth ≈ local-currency growth + translation effect, and label it as an approximation. Do not mix a period-average rate for earnings with a period-end rate for revenue growth. For valuation, state the currency of the share price, earnings forecast and enterprise value, then run a sensitivity table for plausible exchange-rate moves.

5. Compare operating quality with model-specific metrics

Software, cloud and internet businesses

Metric What to examine Warning sign
Recurring or transaction revenue Share of contracted, subscription or repeat usage revenue Growth depends on one-time licenses or incentives
Retention and net revenue expansion Customer renewal, churn and spending by existing customers New bookings rise while the installed base contracts
Take rate and gross margin Platform economics after payment, hosting or content costs Gross merchandise value grows but retained economics do not
Sales efficiency New gross profit generated per unit of sales and marketing spend Acquisition costs rise faster than customer lifetime value
R&D intensity R&D as a share of revenue and the resulting product pipeline Under-investment threatens product relevance; over-investment lacks evidence of returns
Free-cash-flow conversion Free cash flow divided by operating profit or net income Profit is positive but receivables, capitalized costs or working capital consume cash
Customer concentration Revenue dependence on a few platforms, carriers or government buyers Loss of one account could reset the growth case

Hardware and semiconductor businesses

  • Utilization and yields: low utilization or poor yields can compress margins even when demand is strong.
  • Inventory turns and days: rising inventory without confirmed orders can precede a correction.
  • Capex intensity: compare capital expenditure with depreciation and operating cash flow across a full cycle.
  • Design wins and backlog: distinguish announced programs from production revenue and measure customer concentration.
  • Cycle exposure: test margins and cash flow at mid-cycle, peak and trough assumptions rather than using one unusually strong quarter.

For every metric, define the period, denominator and whether it is reported or adjusted. A higher margin is not automatically better if it comes from an unsustainable product mix or under-investment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Select a valuation measure that fits the business

Multiple Best use Required qualifications
P/E Profitable companies with reasonably stable capital structures State forecast year, basic or diluted shares, currency and treatment of exceptional items
EV/EBITDA Comparing companies with different debt levels, tax rates or depreciation profiles Define enterprise value, lease treatment and whether EBITDA is reported or adjusted
EV/sales or price/sales Earlier-stage or temporarily loss-making firms Pair with gross margin, growth quality and a credible path to cash generation
Free-cash-flow yield Businesses with sustainable, observable cash generation Normalize working capital, capex, stock compensation and one-off cash items

Always publish the forecast year and the assumptions behind the denominator. A 20-times multiple on next year’s optimistic estimate is not comparable with a 20-times multiple on trailing reported earnings. Compare valuation with growth, margins, reinvestment needs and risk; do not treat a low multiple as proof of mispricing.

7. Adjust for ownership, free float and liquidity

Market capitalization based on all issued shares can overstate the capital available to public investors. Record free float, foreign-ownership limits, insider lock-ups, strategic cross-holdings and the percentage held by the state or a controlling family. STOXX’s STOXX Asia Technology 100 methodology applies free-float weighting, foreign-ownership adjustments and liquidity criteria, illustrating why investable indexes differ from simple market-cap rankings.

Liquidity affects both valuation and execution. Compare median daily value traded, bid-ask spreads, turnover, trading suspensions, settlement cycles and the availability of stock lending. Use an investable market capitalization of shares outstanding × free-float percentage, then apply any remaining foreign-ownership headroom. A theoretically cheap share can be impractical if an overseas investor cannot buy enough stock or exit without moving the price.

The OECD’s Asia Capital Markets Report 2026 reports that, in Asia excluding China and Japan, the three largest shareholders hold more than half of equity in 52% of listed companies, versus 44% globally. Concentration can support long-term control but increases minority-investor and related-party risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Score governance and country risk explicitly

  • Related-party transactions: inspect purchases, loans, guarantees and asset transfers involving controllers or affiliates.
  • Board independence: check independent-director definitions, audit-committee expertise, attendance and tenure.
  • Minority rights: review voting arrangements, pre-emption rights, squeeze-out rules, dividend policy and the ability to challenge self-dealing.
  • State ownership and policy goals: identify golden shares, state-linked lenders, directed investment or objectives that may conflict with minority returns.
  • Data and antitrust regulation: assess platform-liability, privacy, competition and content rules that can change monetization.
  • Export controls and sanctions: map restrictions on advanced technology, customers, suppliers and shipping routes.
  • Intellectual-property enforcement: evaluate patent remedies, licensing practice and the risk of forced technology transfer.
  • Geopolitical concentration: measure dependence on one country for production, customers, talent, energy or critical components.

Give governance and country risk a score rather than burying them in a narrative discount. Explain which event would change the score and how quickly the company could respond.

9. Build a cross-market scorecard

Use one row per company and preserve the underlying local figures in a linked worksheet or notes column. A practical scorecard contains:

Category Columns to include
Growth Local-currency revenue growth, common-currency growth, earnings growth and organic versus acquired growth
Quality Gross and operating margin, retention or utilization, R&D intensity, customer concentration and free-cash-flow conversion
Balance sheet Net debt/EBITDA, interest coverage, cash maturity profile, lease obligations and working-capital needs
Valuation P/E, EV/EBITDA, EV/sales or free-cash-flow yield with forecast year and adjustment policy
Investability Free float, foreign-ownership headroom, average traded value, spread, settlement and ADR/GDR ratio
Risk Governance, regulation, export controls, geopolitical concentration and FX sensitivity

Score each category on a fixed scale, such as 1 to 5, and publish the weights. For a cyclical foundry, give more weight to balance-sheet resilience and mid-cycle economics; for a subscription software company, give more weight to retention, gross margin and cash conversion. Keep a separate base, bear and bull case so that one optimistic forecast does not dominate the ranking.

10. A repeatable comparison workflow

  1. Define the investable universe. Set the countries, exchanges, sector boundaries, minimum liquidity and foreign-ownership constraints before looking at valuations.
  2. Collect primary filings. Record fiscal year-end, reporting framework, segment definitions, share classes, ADR/GDR terms and the date of each price.
  3. Map the business model. Place each issuer in a peer group and note the competitive advantage, customer concentration and cycle position.
  4. Normalize statements. Align periods, convert units, adjust splits, reconcile diluted shares, separate minority interests and document one-off items.
  5. Calculate operating metrics. Use model-appropriate measures such as retention and take rate for platforms or utilization, yields and capex for semiconductors.
  6. Reconcile securities. Convert ADR or GDR prices using the depositary ratio, then check dividends, fees, taxes, trading times and liquidity.
  7. Run the currency bridge. Show local results, investor-currency results and a sensitivity to exchange-rate changes; identify transaction and translation exposure.
  8. Value on consistent assumptions. State forecast year, currency, share count, net-debt definition and exceptional-item treatment for every multiple.
  9. Apply investability and risk filters. Adjust for free float, foreign-ownership headroom, liquidity, governance, regulation and geopolitical concentration.
  10. Stress-test scenarios. Model weaker demand, lower margins, higher funding costs, adverse FX and a regulatory shock. Record which assumptions drive the ranking.
  11. Review the evidence date. Replace stale prices, exchange rates, ownership limits and regulatory assumptions before acting on the scorecard.

11. Worked reconciliation example

Assume two hypothetical chip companies report in different currencies. Company A reports NT$100 billion of revenue and NT$20 billion of operating profit. Company B reports ¥900 billion of revenue and ¥90 billion of operating profit. At face value, their scales cannot be compared. Calculate operating margins first: 20% for A and 10% for B. Only then convert both revenue and profit to a common currency using the same stated convention. If A’s currency weakened 8% against the investor’s currency during the period while B’s was unchanged, A’s local growth could still be stronger even if its translated growth looked weaker.

Now suppose A’s receipt trades at US$18 and each receipt represents two ordinary shares. If the ordinary share is NT$540 and the rate is NT$30 per US dollar, the mechanical value is NT$540 × 2 ÷ 30 = US$36. The US$18 quote would require an explanation—such as a different ratio, stale home-market pricing, a corporate action or a data error—before any valuation conclusion. The figures are illustrative; use the actual deposit agreement and synchronized prices for a real security.

12. What broad market statistics can—and cannot—tell you

The OECD’s Asia Capital Markets Report 2026 calculates a 4% annualised return for Asian markets excluding Japan from 2011 through 2026, compared with 9% globally, using specified benchmark indices and dates. It also reports that 39% of Asian companies excluding China and Japan traded below book value, versus 34% globally. These are market-level observations, not proof that an individual technology stock is cheap or that a discount will close.

The same report says Japan and Korea value-up initiatives recorded annualised equity-market gains of 31% and 14%, respectively, after launch, while valuation improvements were uneven. Treat policy programmes as a scenario variable: identify the governance or payout changes that could benefit a company, then test whether the current price already discounts them.

13. Common mistakes and how to fix them

  • Ranking all technology stocks on P/E: split peers by business model and use EV/sales or cash-flow measures when earnings are immature or cyclical.
  • Ignoring the ADR ratio: write the ratio beside every receipt price and reconcile it to a synchronized home-market quote.
  • Mixing fiscal years: roll results to a common period and label estimates, trailing figures and reported figures separately.
  • Converting everything at one exchange rate: use period averages for flows and period-end rates for balances, then show the FX bridge.
  • Using reported profit without minority interests or one-offs: reconcile profit attributable to ordinary shareholders and disclose each adjustment.
  • Assuming IFRS means identical accounting: read the local implementation, notes and accounting policies; implementation differences remain material.
  • Ignoring free float: calculate investable market capitalization and check foreign-ownership headroom before treating a stock as available.
  • Treating low valuation as a catalyst: identify what could close the discount—cash returns, governance reform, earnings growth or a regulatory change—and what could prevent it.
  • Overlooking execution costs: include spreads, commissions, depositary fees, taxes, withholding and settlement friction in expected returns.
  • Updating only the price: refresh ownership, regulation, FX assumptions, filings and corporate actions at the same time.

Bottom line

A useful Asian technology-stock comparison is a documented normalization exercise, not a list of headline multiples. Compare like with like, preserve local-currency evidence, reconcile ADRs and share classes, separate business results from FX, and make ownership, liquidity, governance and country risk visible in the scorecard. The final ranking should survive a different exchange rate, a less favorable cycle and a careful reading of the issuer’s notes.
