Compare Indian paint stocks on a like-for-like basis before looking at the share price. Start with consolidated, audited financial statements; then compare FY2019–FY2024 revenue CAGR, volume and price/mix, segment mix, EBITDA margin, ROCE, cash conversion, competitive reach and finally valuation. On the figures cited in the SEBI filing, Indigo Paints had the fastest revenue growth among the named companies, while Asian Paints remained the scale reference in a concentrated market. That does not by itself make Indigo the best investment or prove that Asian Paints’ premium is justified: margins, capital efficiency, cash generation, business mix and the price you pay must all be tested together.

1. Set an apples-to-apples comparison before collecting numbers

Paint companies do not report identical businesses. Asian Paints is predominantly decorative and home décor, while Kansai Nerolac has a substantial industrial orientation. A headline margin or growth rate can therefore reflect mix rather than superior execution. Use the same period, currency, accounting scope and definitions for every company.

Use consolidated, audited annual figures

  • Use consolidated statements for Asian Paints, Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Indigo Paints and Akzo Nobel India.
  • Keep the financial year consistent. The cited growth comparison runs from FY2019 to FY2024, a five-year interval.
  • Use audited annual-report numbers rather than mixing a parent company with a subsidiary, standalone results with consolidated results, or quarterly data with full-year data.
  • Add JSW Paints or another entrant only when its period, segment definitions and disclosure basis match the established peer set.
  • Record whether each figure is reported, estimated or calculated. Do not fill an undisclosed peer metric with a proxy and label it comparable.

Understand the market structure

A SEBI filing groups Asian Paints, Berger Paints and Kansai Nerolac as holding over approximately 80% of the Indian paint market. That concentration gives scale, dealer relationships and distribution economics considerable importance. It also means a smaller company’s high growth rate may be measured from a much lower base.

Company Role in a comparison Adjustment to make
Asian Paints Largest-scale reference company in the cited market structure; predominantly decorative and home décor. Separate decorative/home-décor performance from any other businesses and international operations.
Berger Paints Large decorative and industrial coatings peer. Use the company’s consolidated segment disclosures and separate industrial contribution where reported.
Kansai Nerolac Major peer with meaningful industrial exposure. Do not compare its blended margin directly with a decorative-heavy company without segment context.
Indigo Paints Smaller decorative-focused company with the highest cited FY2019–FY2024 revenue CAGR. Check the lower-base effect, distribution expansion and whether growth translated into cash and returns.
Akzo Nobel India Listed coatings peer included in the cited CAGR table. Use the same consolidated accounting scope and segment definitions as the other companies.
JSW Paints or other entrants Potential challenger. Include only when the comparison period and disclosures are genuinely comparable; the cited table reports JSW Paints FY2024 revenue of ₹20.97 billion.

2. Compare growth in more than one dimension

Revenue growth is the starting point, not the verdict. Break it into volume, price, product mix, geography and business segment. A company can report strong sales growth because of price increases while volumes stagnate, or because a small new business is expanding rapidly without changing group economics.

What the cited five-year CAGRs show

Company FY2019–FY2024 revenue CAGR How to read it
Asian Paints 13.02% Strong multi-year growth from the largest-scale reference company.
Berger Paints 13.06% Essentially similar five-year revenue CAGR to Asian Paints in the cited SEBI table.
Kansai Nerolac 7.54% Lowest CAGR among the named large peers in that table; industrial mix and cycle exposure require context.
Akzo Nobel India 6.30% Lower reported CAGR over the same period; verify segment and consolidation details.
Indigo Paints 21.72% Highest cited CAGR; test whether the rate is supported by sustainable volume, distribution and cash generation.

The calculation is (FY2024 revenue ÷ FY2019 revenue)^(1/5) − 1. Keep the five-year denominator explicit: FY2019 to FY2024 contains five annual growth intervals. Do not describe these rates as current growth, and do not infer a future return from them.

Separate volume from price and mix

  • Volume: like-for-like volume growth indicates whether more litres or units were sold.
  • Price: price increases can lift revenue without equivalent volume growth.
  • Mix: premium products, waterproofing, home décor or industrial coatings can change average realisation and margin.
  • Geography: international operations can add growth but bring currency and local-market risks.
  • Business line: decorative, industrial and adjacent categories should be assessed separately before aggregating.

When an annual report does not provide a like-for-like volume bridge, mark volume as not stated rather than substituting revenue growth. Look for management’s explanation of volume, price/mix and capacity in the same year, then test whether operating cash flow moved with reported sales.

3. Compare profitability and capital efficiency

Growth creates value only when the company earns an adequate return on the capital needed to produce it. Track EBITDA margin, gross margin, margin volatility, ROCE, ROE and operating cash conversion using identical definitions and consolidated scope.

Anchor the peer worksheet with reported Asian Paints figures

Metric Asian Paints figure Qualification
EBITDA ₹7,113.1 crore Asian Paints FY2025–26 annual-report page.
ROCE 28.4% Asian Paints FY2025 annual-report figure; confirm the company’s stated ROCE definition before comparing it with peers.
Decorative and home-décor revenue ₹30,830.4 crore Asian Paints FY2025–26 annual-report page.
Decorative and home-décor share of revenue 86.8% Asian Paints FY2025–26 annual-report page.

Do not place the FY2025 ROCE beside a peer’s FY2024 or quarterly ROCE without labeling the date difference. Likewise, calculate EBITDA margin as EBITDA divided by the same period’s consolidated revenue; do not compare a group EBITDA number with a segment margin.

Use a consistent set of formulas

  • EBITDA margin: EBITDA ÷ revenue.
  • Gross margin: (revenue − cost of goods sold) ÷ revenue, with accounting classifications checked across companies.
  • ROCE: operating profit ÷ the capital employed definition used by the company; reconcile differences in average versus year-end capital.
  • ROE: profit attributable to shareholders ÷ average equity, while noting exceptional items and minority interests.
  • Operating cash conversion: cash flow from operations ÷ EBITDA or ÷ operating profit. Pick one denominator and apply it to every peer.

Margin quality matters as much as the percentage. A margin that falls sharply when raw-material costs rise may be less durable than a slightly lower margin with stable cash conversion. Review at least several years of annual data for volatility, then identify whether changes came from input costs, pricing, product mix, promotional intensity or fixed-cost absorption.

4. Adjust for decorative, industrial and international mix

Asian Paints reports ₹30,830.4 crore of decorative and home-décor revenue for FY2025–26, representing 86.8% of revenue. That composition makes it an appropriate decorative benchmark, but not a neutral benchmark for every coatings company.

Why Kansai Nerolac needs a separate view

Kansai Nerolac’s official 2024 release estimates India’s domestic paint industry at about ₹75,000 crore as of March 2024. Its industrial exposure means the analyst should split automotive, industrial and decorative activities before comparing margins, growth or cyclicality with Asian Paints. Industrial demand can be tied more closely to vehicle production, capital expenditure and manufacturing cycles, whereas decorative demand is influenced by repainting, housing and new construction.

Build a mix-adjusted comparison

  1. Extract each company’s decorative, industrial and international revenue from the same annual period.
  2. Calculate each segment’s share of group revenue.
  3. Compare growth within each segment before comparing the consolidated total.
  4. Compare segment margins where disclosed; label undisclosed values as not stated.
  5. Review whether a margin change came from mix shifting toward a higher- or lower-margin business.

This prevents a decorative-heavy company from appearing automatically superior simply because decorative margins were stronger in a particular year, and it prevents an industrial-heavy company from being penalised for a cycle-specific downturn that says little about its long-term franchise.

5. Test competitive position beyond reported market share

Market share is an outcome, not a complete explanation. Examine the operating assets that help a paint company win and retain demand.

  • Dealer and retailer reach: assess breadth, geographic density, dealer productivity and the cost of adding outlets.
  • Tinting machines: a wider installed base can improve colour availability and reduce inventory requirements, but additions also require capital and service.
  • Product breadth: compare mainstream, premium, waterproofing, wood finishes, adhesives and home-décor offerings only when each company reports them consistently.
  • Repainting versus new construction: repainting can provide a different demand profile from new housing and project work.
  • Raw-material sensitivity: identify exposure to crude-linked inputs, solvents, titanium dioxide and other key materials, then compare price pass-through and lag.
  • Competitive pricing: watch discounts, dealer incentives and promotional intensity; revenue growth purchased through persistent discounting may not create value.
  • International operations: separate local performance from currency translation and country-specific risks.

Asian Paints’ FY2024–25 annual report described the year as challenging for the domestic coatings industry and said industry revenue ranged from low single-digit decline to flat performance. Treat that statement as evidence of the period’s competitive and demand pressure, not as a permanent forecast.

The same annual-report positioning describes Asian Paints as India’s leading paint and décor brand and as one of the top ten decorative coatings companies globally. Use that as company positioning alongside measurable evidence such as distribution, segment growth, returns and cash generation; it is not a substitute for those tests.

6. Decide whether a valuation premium is earned

A premium valuation is justified only when superior growth, margins, returns, durability and balance-sheet quality are likely to persist long enough to compensate for the higher entry price. Historical CAGRs alone cannot establish that conclusion.

Compare the three core multiples

Multiple What it measures Main caution
P/E Share price relative to earnings attributable to shareholders. Distorted by exceptional items, differing tax rates and cyclical earnings.
EV/EBITDA Enterprise value relative to operating earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation. Requires consistent debt, lease and minority-interest treatment; ignores capital expenditure needs.
Price-to-book Market value relative to reported equity. Less informative when brands and distribution assets are not reflected at current value or when accounting policies differ.

Refresh the share price, net debt, share count and consensus estimates at the time of publication. The available figures do not establish a live P/E, EV/EBITDA or price-to-book multiple, so no current premium or discount should be asserted from them.

Use a premium checklist

  • Is revenue growth superior after adjusting for company size and base effects?
  • Are EBITDA and gross margins structurally higher, or merely benefiting from a favourable input-cost year?
  • Does ROCE remain strong after including the capital required for distribution, tinting and capacity?
  • Does operating cash flow track EBITDA over a full cycle?
  • Is the balance sheet resilient if demand weakens or raw-material costs rise?
  • Does the price already assume years of high growth?

7. A repeatable comparison workflow

  1. Freeze the date and scope. Write down the fiscal year, consolidated basis, currency and whether figures are audited.
  2. Build the peer sheet. Add Asian Paints, Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, Indigo Paints and Akzo Nobel India; add an entrant only if its disclosures match.
  3. Enter the growth block. Record revenue for FY2019 and FY2024, calculate the five-year CAGR, and separately capture volume, price/mix and international growth where disclosed.
  4. Enter the profitability block. Record revenue, EBITDA, EBITDA margin, gross margin, ROCE, ROE and operating cash flow for each comparable year.
  5. Normalize the mix. Add decorative, industrial and international shares, then compare segment growth and margins rather than relying on group averages.
  6. Assess competitive durability. Document dealer reach, tinting capacity, product breadth, repainting exposure, raw-material sensitivity and pricing behaviour.
  7. Check the balance sheet. Reconcile debt, leases, cash, minority interests and working-capital movements before calculating enterprise-value multiples.
  8. Refresh valuation. Use the same market-close date and the same forward or trailing earnings convention for every company.
  9. Write the investment case and the disconfirming evidence. For every claimed advantage, state what would invalidate it: slowing volumes, falling cash conversion, margin compression, rising leverage or an excessive multiple.

8. How to interpret common outcomes

High growth, weak cash conversion

This can indicate working-capital investment, channel loading, aggressive credit or a business still building distribution. Investigate receivables, inventory and operating cash flow before treating the growth as high quality.

High margin, low growth

A mature decorative franchise may generate attractive margins and ROCE even when revenue growth is slower. The valuation must reflect the slower reinvestment opportunity.

Low margin, industrial-heavy mix

Separate cycle effects from structural weakness. Compare the company through a full demand cycle and examine segment margins instead of judging the group on a single trough year.

Fast-growing smaller company

Indigo Paints’ 21.72% FY2019–FY2024 revenue CAGR is the highest in the cited table, but the rate needs a base-size, distribution, margin and cash-flow test. A smaller company can grow faster without matching the scale advantages or resilience of the market leader.

Similar growth, different valuation

Asian Paints and Berger Paints have nearly identical cited five-year revenue CAGRs—13.02% and 13.06%. If their market multiples differ, investigate differences in margins, ROCE, cash conversion, mix, balance-sheet risk and expected future growth rather than choosing on CAGR alone.

9. Data and interpretation pitfalls

  • Mixing fiscal years: a FY2025–26 EBITDA figure cannot be compared with a peer’s FY2024 margin without clear labeling.
  • Using standalone accounts: subsidiaries and international operations can materially change the consolidated result.
  • Calling revenue CAGR earnings CAGR: the cited rates measure revenue only.
  • Ignoring base effects: a smaller company can post a higher percentage increase from a lower starting point.
  • Comparing industrial and decorative margins directly: segment economics and cycles differ.
  • Treating market-share estimates as audited facts: the approximately 80% concentration statement comes from a SEBI filing and should be cited with that qualification.
  • Using stale prices: valuation changes every trading day; historical operating data does not provide a live multiple.
  • Equating brand claims with returns: positioning must be tested against distribution, profitability, ROCE and cash flow.

10. The practical conclusion

Use Asian Paints as the scale and decorative-business reference, not as an automatic winner. Berger is a close growth comparator in the cited period; Kansai Nerolac requires industrial-cycle adjustment; Indigo deserves investigation for its 21.72% CAGR but also the strongest base-effect and execution checks; and Akzo Nobel India’s lower cited CAGR needs the same disclosure and mix scrutiny. The correct choice depends on the combination of sustainable growth, margin quality, ROCE, cash conversion, competitive durability and valuation on a common date.
